8 reviews for Jade Palace Chinese & Seafood Restaurant
This restaurant served me the best Chinese food I had during my 2-month stay in Chapel Hill.
Only a short, 15-minute walk from UNC-CH's campus is where this hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant was found. A friend of mine frequents this restaurant quite a bit and did nothing but rave about it during my stay in NC.
I figured I would try this place out by ordering something from their very reasonably priced (around $5.95, if I remember correctly) lunch special. It was not the most extensive menu, but a lot of staples were found on it, including:
Orange Chicken
General Tsao Chicken
Black Pepper Beef
Honey Chicken
Shrimp in Lobster Sauce
Fried Rice
Chow Mein/Lo Mein
And even a few surprises like Pad Thai
I actually was able to order something not offered on the menu--Ma Po Tofu. The hostess was extremely nice and hospitable and we conversed almost throughout my stay at the restaurant.
After ordering, we ordered soup. I got myself a Hot and Sour soup and it was accompanied by a side of fried wonton chips. The soup itself was made very well. It contained quite a bit of starch, which gave it a very thick and gelatin-like texture. There was a good amount of vegetables in the soup, including my favorite, bamboo!
The food came out in a very timely manner. My Ma Po Tofu was great. It had the right amount of spice and it was not drowned in its own sauce. The ground pork was seasoned nicely with a lot of cumin (or it seemed to be cumin?). The portion wasn't the greatest, but at under $6, how can I complain? I tried some of my friends' food, including Beef Lo Mein and Beef and Broccoli. Although not bad, I don't think their's came in anywhere near the yummi-ness of my dish.
The staff was very friendly and I actually had a long chat with the cashier. Apparently he was from Los Angeles like me, so we had a nice time talking about the places we had mutually visited before.
Jade Palace is definitely a place one should visit to avoid long lines and to simply enjoy good-tasting food. The staff is very friendly and like to talk! It was my first time there and I felt like a regular. This place gets a 4/5 on my book, and is going to be a re-visit my next time in North Carolina!
Wow. Just plain pathetic. I hate giving places one-star reviews, but I see it as much sovereign duty to prevent other people from wasting their time and money here.
I love Chinese food, but I could barely stomach this stuff. My honey chicken was - I kid you not - fried chicken smothered in honey mustard dressing (if that wasn't honey mustard dressing, it was really, really close). It was not good. And they charged me through the nose for it. The kung pow chicken tasted like a frozen dinner that had been microwaved. They would not refill my water (who ever heard of that at a Chinese restaurant!?). They charged my friend for a coke refill but didn't even tell him. I couldn't believe it.
As if that wasn't enough, if took them twenty minutes to give us our blasted check. And we were the only ones there.
This is a terrible restaurant. Don't come here. If you want Chinese, Gourmet is right down the street.
I stumbled upon this place with my girlfriend who is a die-hard Chinese food fan. Unfortunately the fare here didn't live up to her standards.
We ordered a couple of things to get a feel for the place. The service was prompt and kind, but the compliments must end there.
The food was bland at best. Even worse, it was pricey relative to other options in the area.
Delicious and cheap. Excellent service who will not let your water glass sit empty, and the food comes out quickly. Try the crab rangoon.
I love Jade Palace, i dont really understand the bad reviews. The Sesame Tofu is fantastic. Also, the employees are usually super nice. I would recommend eating in, as that usually tastes better than when you get takeout. Brown rice!
Poor quality and over priced. Decor is kind of depressing and the service is spotty.
Mongolian beef is tasty but everytime I've tried something else it was awful. $8-$9 an entree is ridiculous for a basic Chinese place like this. After a disastrous trip on the Chinese New Year, I refuse to go anymore.
That said it may be your best option in the area.
Grrr.
Not really the best Chinese food but the staff is wonderful and they make an effort to really embrace the customers. The vegetarian egg foo jung (sp??) can sometimes be outrageously delicious or outrageously bland and disappointing. hit or miss but a nice homey place.
Not bad, they at least have some vegetarian options. The food can be a bit hit or miss at times and they charge for refills. The take out is usually a bit more predictiable quality and they clearly take care of these costumers. The is always a thought when I want some asian food.
