7 reviews for Jade Beauty & Wellness Spa
The place is clean and aesthetically pleasing and the manicures are $10 (Make sure you get a punch card because you get a free manicure with the 11th service).
The quality of service, however, is hit or miss. If charging only $10 justifies doing a mediocre job, I'd rather pay the extra few bucks. But sometimes it's okay, but never exceptional.
Also, like many many many other nail salons in the city, I believe (but have no scientific proof) that they water down their polishes to get more uses out of the bottles. I think this to be true because every time I use their colors, my nails chip twice as fast. If I bring my own color in, it lasts a few days more, so I usually do.
I noticed that a few reviewers were upset when the ladies asked for twenty percent. It's very true -- they shouldn't ask...but I would encourage tipping 20% for most services in NYC unless you truly felt like you received bad service. I know, I know, everywhere else in the U.S., 15% is a good tip. But you just aren't in Kansas anymore, darlin'.
Something was missing from this place! I liked my mani and pedi! And my massage was interesting! For me I think I was missing the welcoming aspect I found in other spa's. I might so back for a quickie mani and pedi but the price isn't worth it. So my search continues!
Pedicures are fun. The best I've ever gotten was actually in Houston, Texas where I selected the pedicure where they submerge your feet in a bath of fresh rose petals and then pour champagne all over them. How gratuitous! But I digress...Unless someone else is footing the champagne and rose petal foot bill I don't really like to spend a whole lot of money on pedicures. I mean can you really tell by looking at someones toenails if they cost $10 or $50 to paint? C'mon. So I found Jade Spa, a perfectly nice and adequate spa in my neighborhood where I can get my feet cleaned and polished for about twenty bucks. They do quite a thorough job and have a nice selection of Opi nail polish.
I've also gotten eyebrow waxing done here when I haven't had time to go anywhere else. Perfectly good in a pinch.
Manicures are $10 and quick... a couple of times I've been disappointed, I've found when its busier they just aren't as thorough. So I try to go Mon-Wed when they are slower. Mani/Pedis are pricier than other places, but its so close to my apartment so its convenient. Another huge plus, the guy that does massage there is excellent.
I stopped in here late on Saturday night around 8 pm. I was very excited to find a place that could give me a pedicure until 9 pm! When my friends and I walked in we were greeted wonderfully. We asked if they had time to do 4 pedicures and the lady said no problem just give me a few minutes to get it set up. We all picked our colors and headed to the back to take our seats. The massaging chairs you sit in while getting your little piggies taken care of is amazing. I have never had a chair massage too hard but this one was borderline. They also have the cutest little flip flops if you don't walk in with some for only $2.
So why the four stars? The lady that was doing my pedicure asked if I wanted a 10 minute massage that would be a little extra. I kindly replied no and she kindly disregarded that. She did it anyway despite my repeated no that was not very kindly the second time. I thought oh well and forgot about it because it felt pretty good when she did it. The next thing that really caught me off guard was my friend beside me finished and her lady asked if she preferred to pay cash or credit card. She replied credit card and told her to charge the amount of the service only as she was going to tip in cash. The credit card receipt was brought, she signed and handed the lady her tip in cash. The lady promptly counted the money , looked at my friend and said, "it's usually 20%" My jaw absolutely dropped! My friend dug out a few more bills and handed it to her. WTF! How rude can you be. I had not seen any of the other girls make that comment to my two other friends so I was curious when it was my turn if I would get the same treatment. My lady finished, took my credit card and ran my amount. I got up and walked toward the front of the store because they were trying to close. I signed my receipt and gave her the tip I thought was appropriate and got the same, "it's usually 20%" (I gave her 15% just so everyone doesn't think I gave something really little)
My response was, "That is all the cash I have" I thought for a minute she was going to take the receipt back and rerun it ! There is a reason it's called a tip and not a service. I plan on going back because besides those little things it was a very nice place. However, if I am asked that again, I will promptly take my money back, recount it and tell the person "I usually tip 10%" and hand them back that total!
I've been going to Jade for several years. They have convenient hours (open late) and the place is very clean. I get manicures/pedicures here as well as eyebrow waxing (and I'll admit to indulging in the occasional massage as well). They're definitely perfectionists. Once I went in with toenails I had tried to polish myself and there was much tsk tsk'ing at my half-assed application of color. Oh the shame.
4 stars go to Joey, the facialist, who I have been seeing for the Jade facial regularly for a few years now. She is cheery, pleasant, and thorough. They actually do have a clean and bright upstairs area - it is not your typical NYC nail salon/facial spa dingy space. It's not necessarily an indulgent, "treat yourself" experience, but she certainly gets a quality job done at a very reasonable price ($80).
P.S. I alternate between here and the True 02 facial at TruSpa, San Francisco, which I love! If anyone has recommendations for similar oxygen facials in NYC at a decent price, please share :-)
