The *best* subs, burgers, cheese steaks, meatball subs, fries, in Downtown Harrisburg.
My favorite sub is the Bada-Boom with Roasted Reds. Second favorite - The Genoa. I eat here about every other week. And I just LOVE that smelly aged provolone :)
Burgers, Fries & Meatball subs are best eaten at the restaurant because the buns get soggy after time.
Also, try the pepper shooters they're bangin! (cherry pepper stuffed with prosciutto and aged provolone, marinated in olive oil and spices.)
As far as the "Call Ahead" suggestion goes... I don't think they answer the phone during lunch. On average, it takes me about 20mins to wait in line, place an order and wait for food to be made. Still well worth the wait. CASH ONLY.
Sometimes I feel like I am on a quest. A quest for the perfect burger. The burgers a Jackson House surely come close. But since I don't want to stop my quest...I don't think that I will say that they are the BEST or I'd have to stop searching. :-) wouldn't I?
If you like wonderful charbroiled burgers, try Jackson House on 6th and Boas downtown. Burgers aren't their only fare (my guy had a cheese steak and fries which he really enjoyed). From the menu it seemed like there was only one size order for fries and it was fairly small...but they were tasty.
Jackson House has intrigued me for years. I generally drive by in the evening, and never find them open, so I was beginning to think it was just store-front that hadn't been used or converted to something new. Imagine my surprise when I found Yelp and finally understood from other YELPERS that It's only open over lunch time. These limited hours were a little challenging for us, but I'm glad we tried it. It was excellent. Parking was a challenge. Fortunately we took the advice of another Yelper and called our order in early (with the intention of eating in the restaurant) and arrived before the afternoon rush of state workers....so it all worked out well. While we were sitting there enjoying our meal the place became standing room only with a line out the door. THANK YOU Yelp for the good advice.
The hoagies are great. A wonderful deli. The burgers are great too.
The only negative about this place is that they are only open for lunch during the week.
Three suggestions:
1. Call ahead
2. Call ahead
3. Call ahead
I'll call at 10 or 10:30 and order my lunch for 12:30. The benefits are two-fold. First, you don't have to wait like the rest of the poor suckers craving their great food. Second, you get two hours to pat yourself on the back for making a great decision for lunch.
Thanks again, Harrisburg Yelpers, for cluing me in on another hidden treasure! I would never have found this on my own. Walked in just under the wire as the grill shuts down at 1:40 PM without exception. The place is very quaint and the people were no-nonsense but I thought, very nice too. I can imagine how crowded it gets as there is a definite (posted) etiquette to ordering Philly steak sandwiches and warnings that burgers will take time to make.
I really wanted to try the Jackson burger but went with the Old Italian sub because of the raves on the sharp provolone. OMG!!!! First of all, the sub was huge; a definite bargain at $6.50 plus tax. I opted for the roasted red peppers for an additional $0.80. The meats and vegetables were delicious as was the roll. The sharp provolone definitely made the sandwich for me and may replace cheddar as my favorite cheese. Coming from NJ, I missed getting Italian subs and this place makes the best I have had in Harrisburg.
I will return for the burger, cheesesteak and more of the subs. After reading the reviews, I would not even try for phone in service because I bet this place gets mobbed at lunch. I'm sure it's frustrating for the caller, but for me ... it's worth the drive.
Omg...this place rocks! Great burgers.
Best burgers around. Open for lunch only. Long wait at times but worth it. Cash only.
So I randomly noticed a small hole in the wall restaurant the other day called the Jackson House, it's located at 6th and Boas Streets. The storefront was littered with those best of Harrisburg stickers for best burger so I figured I had better look into the matter. I stepped inside the place for lunch (it's only open for lunch FYI) and noticed the place certainly had character. It's really not much to look at inside, but the sheer amount of people that were squeezed in the tiny dining room gave me high expectations for the food.
I wasn't disappointed.
I ordered the "Jackson Burger" guessing it was the house specialty and sweet heavens the 1/2 pound burger was so juicy and succulent I basically inhaled the thing. Prices are practical, the staff was friendly, and I left more than satisfied. You should be aware that they don't take credit cards, but other than that I fully endorse the place and suggest you toss whatever lunch you brown bagged this morning and head over to the Jackson House for the best burger in Harrisburg.
Simply the best.

I went for the first time about 3 weeks ago and have been back two more times. Italian and burgers are incredible! Def get the sharp provolone on your subs or cheese steaks! It is cash only and they turn the grill off at 1:45...otherwise I would have had another glorious meal there!
Hands down, best place to eat in Harrisburg! Mrs. A's with roasted red peppers and tuna deluxe (AND vegetarian cheesesteak) are fantastic!
Jackson House is one of those places I love to bring "virgins" to for lunch. You can tell anyone how good the burgers are, but tasting is believing. The hoagies are the best around. I am partial to Mrs. Adonellis Old Italian with sharp provolone. I took my parents there a few months ago and they went crazy for the place. Two short falls, the hours are limited (lunch week-days only) and it is a tiny place with limited seating. I also like the fresh cheese-steaks, but the burgers are what keep me coming back for more.
I, like the other reviewers, love this place!
My uncle wanted to spend some quality time with me and asked if I wanted to have the best burger in Harrisburg. Of course I said yes! He took me here and ordered the Jackson House burger. Delicious!
Unfortunately, the hours are kind of inconvenient but its worth it.
Seems out of place - off Restaurant Row on Second Street and instead tucked in a residential corner of Sixth Street - but the food is solid - the burgers are truly solid - and the atmosphere is awesome. It pays great homage to South Philly and its culture - even if that's waning.
