Review from Amy R.
So many great places and choices in NYC. Really glad we stumbled across this place.
Great menu selection and extensive! Great food and service.
The burgers are huge and quite messy, but well worth it. Bacon and Mushroom burger was amazing. J ordered the Southwest Chicken Sandwich which he mentioned was excellent!
Nice place for lunch! Will certainly head back next time we are in need of some tasty sandwiches and burgers. -

3 words: BIG BEEFY BURGER. it was so filling that half was left over for another entire meal. that said, it was a good value to pay ~$8-10 for a burger. food was cooked after order was made, which means a bit of a wait. worth it, for the freshness! i ordered lunch as a takeout, so cannot comment on their service.
i think 'hole' in the name must refer to the fact that the place is a hole in the wall. as soon as you walk in, you see the kitchen with a bar wrapped around. there is an aisle slightly wider than what you'll find on a plane leading to the far side where there are additional rooms with more tables and seats. it's got a cozy 'real ny' feel to it with newspaper clippings all over the wall and other urban paraphernalia and dingy lighting. -

Giant burgers which are juicy, tasty and a LOT of meat! Location is a bit dingy and cramped but it feels like it's part of the experience.
Not bad for a filling meal but there was nothing that particularly drove me to want to come back. I still prefer Shake Shack. -

This is the place to go when you are craving a burger. My favorite is the guacamole burger. Very reasonably priced.

Pretty good food. A bit cramp and street parking is very hard. This jackson hole is a basement diner and narrow. But very close if u decide to grab something before getting off or getting on the 59computer street bridge.

Jackson Hole gave me mixed feelings. At first, I wanted to love the place because c'mon, burgers!! Hello! Service at beginning was awfully slow, not to mention that sitting there felt like sitting in a radiator. Their burgers are huge - imagine my face in burger form. For those of you who don't know my face, imagine something a little bigger than a Big-Mac. I was disappointed with the entire burger, severely underseasoned on the patty and the mushroom and onion mix. Someone in the kitchen was cheap on that salt!
The only thing I loved was the pickles and trust me, I don't like pickles that much but these are yummy!
I'd rather go to Shake Shack. Pft. -

If you want a delicious, health size burger with almost any topping/combination, this is the place to go. Only place I've had a Niger in NY, but the bar has been set high.

The burger doesn't stay together. It's a mess. If you have to eat a burger with a utensil it's not a burger anymore. This place is really expensive too. Plan on giving up you first born if you want extras on your already $10 burger.
Go to shake shack. -

Its hard to make a burger bad but when I had my very first burger here, it was absolutely disgusting. I had gotten a western burger. The meat didn't look fully cooked and it tasted like sloppy Joe's with bacon. My stomach hurt after so I had to go get tea.

I thought that Five Guys had a delicious burger, however, they may now be my runner up compared to Jackson Hole. Due to the fact that I had I had to go to the orthodontist last week for a retainer check and was in the mood for a burger, I went to Jackson Hole on the recommendation of my friend, who said it was delicious! When I stumbled into Jackson Hole, I found it to have a diner like ambience, with a counter where you can see everything being made fresh, tiled floors, and decorations like old signs for advertisements like Pepsi. Sitting at my table, I was greeted by complimentary half sour pickle slices. For my burger, I chose the Sautéed Mushroom Burger platter, which had a huge, juicy and tender 7 ounce burger, sweet and ripe tomato slices, leafy lettuce, and meaty sautéed mushrooms! I also liked the Steak Fries served with my burger, which were thick, salty, and potatoey. While I did not order any other dishes, I caught a glimpse of the Grilled Chicken Salad, which was loaded with grilled chicken (unlike other restaurants that skimp with the grilled chicken on their salads) and was on a bed of fresh greens. The service was also very good, with my waiter making sure my Diet Pepsi was always filled and serving me in an efficient and friendly manner. Even for NYC, considering the quality and portion size, the $15 I paid with tax and tip was reasonable. If you are in NYC, do not hesitate to stop at Jackson Hole for a filling and delicious burger!

I am not a huge fan of burgers but I went here to see why this place is so famous. I ordered Mari Bella Burger, which was the most expensive one there (around $18), with portobello mushroom and brie cheese. I didn't really expect much because the strawberry shake I ordered before food wasn't so great (it wasn't cold enough and there were so many chunks of strawberries that I couldn't really suck through a straw.) But when the food came out I was amazed!! it was SOOO GOOD!! The meet was tender ( I ordered for medium-rare), the mushroom onion and brie all tasted so good together!! Also, the burger was SOOO BIG that I only ate a half and I was SOOO FULL!! Besides the price, I luv the burger!!
However, the Pizza Burger that my boyfriend ordered wasn't really good. it was nothing special. the meet and the pizza sauce really didn't go good together.
So the key point here is that you have to be very careful of selection of burger. (and don't order milk shakes instead order soda or sparking water) -

THE FRICKIN BIGGEST BURGERS EVER! Ok, so I do HEART cheeseburgers and everyone was raving about JACKSON HOLE, which I have been too, but it was at least 10 years ago. So, out scouring NY for an apt for my friend Jamie, we found one of their locations on the Upper West Side and with a love of burgers like myself she was down to try the oh so "delicious" JACKSON HOLE burger.
Well, to our delight they came out literally about 2 mins after we placed our order... and I was in SHOCK when I saw the plate. All I ordered was a cheeseburger, a plain ol' cheeseburger and it must have taken like 10 cows to make this burger (sorry cows), but SH*T it was huge. She got the bacon cheddar burger which I must say looks much more appetizing than mine, but alas we dug in. I'm sorry to say as "fabulous" as people say these burgers are, they were just not for me.
There is no taste, no seasoning in the meat... it's literally just a huge ball of ground meat... and I will take FIVE GUYS (nyc), SHAKE SHACK (nyc), or IN N' OUT (la) any day over one of these bad boys, but if you are in the market for the biggest burger ever, stroll on over to JACKSON HOLE, and trust me you will have your hunger hole filled and more. -

Eh. It was ok. I know this is a chain in the city; I chose to have a quick dinner here with an old friend on Thurs early evening (5:30pm). It's near where I used to work, so seemed convenient.
First- the place is so small, and HOT. It was like 200 degrees. And no thanks to the nasty humid rain we've been getting- it stunk too! :(. And the bathroom was miniscule...
Wow such a negative review from me already- bear with me. I'm sleep deprived but yet fulfilling my civic duty by Yelping ASAP.
Anyway, aside from these things, and the on and off service. (Meaning, waters weren't filled, it was hard to get waiter's attention, etc), the food was ok. It comes out fast, and there are a lot of items to choose from on the menu. It's kind of like sensory overload! The main attraction is their "7 oz burger" (it did seem actually 7 oz- massive massive meat patties!). And there are so many kind..some copyrighted, too. LOL. Some of them were pretty innovative but there were the usual themes- Southwest, Chili Burger, Italian Portobello Mushroom (Mari Bella: this was the healthiest one, accompanied with a salad and wheat roll). They come solo, or with a fries platter. The burgers themselves are in the $10ish range, and add 3-4 bucks for the fries.
I got the Akaboura burger. I sort of thought the "fried onions" on top were actually going to be fried- like Onion Rings sort of. Nope, they were just greasy grilled onions. Fail. The mushrooms and cheddar was nice though (I skipped the green peppers- hate those). The turkey meat itself (ah yes I did get a turkey burger, don't do the beef thing) was good; fresh, meaty and juicy. It lacked the smoky, cumin type taste I really enjoy in turkey burgers, so definitely not a top contender but pretty good. I was partial to the sound of other burgers: Guacamole, Southwest, Californian....
It came atop a french baguette type of bread- no roll. I was meh about this as it seemed cheap. But the side of cole slow was actually flavorful and crunchy.
My friend got the veggie sandwich- also on the same kind of bread; with broccoli, and lots of melted cheddar. Looked good but pretty standard- not that creative with the veggies. She said it was good though. It was equally massive.
My friend got a side of the steak frites. They were pretty decent; more on the baked side (as steak frites usually are) so not as oily/greasy.
They have other stuff on the menu that looked like good American classics: grilled cheese, lots of chicken dishes (chick parm), and some Mexican inspired fare. Our neighbors got milkshakes of some sort- that looked good.
So, food a 3, but service and venue is more like a 2. The waiter kept asking us a million times at the meal's end if we wanted anything else. NO!!! YOU SUCK! Stop pushing us to order more shit.
Thank you.
(Go Factor.. Ahem... ehh if you're a true burger fan I suppose)
P.S. You can chose to sit at the bar (probably even hotter! Or at a table in the back- where we chose). Maybe I'd suggest the bar, only because it seems the waiters hover around there more often. -

I came here last night with a friend for a late dinner
Walking downstairs it looked kind of shady right off the bat - just a bar that looked very Johnny Rockets-ish. But we got led back towards a nicer seating area that was consistently and well-decorated.
The menu is quite big - almost pleasantly so. It seemed like there were a lot of options to tickle the fancy for anybody wanting anything really. The menu focuses around burgers, breakfasts, and chicken sandwiches (which I'm sure you can find online).
I ordered the Turkey Guacomole Burger Platter, and was very pleased.
The burger wsa very well-cooked, was quite large, and guac-on-cheese-on a burger was just, phenomenal. The dish also came with chips, salsa, sour cream, in addition to fries, tomato and a pickle. The only thing to be desired on the dish is - I would have liked a few more fries.
I literally had more than I can eat.
On a scale of burgers I've had in my lifetime, it was easily a 8 out of 10. All of that cost me ~$16 (pre-tip).
Yes, I know, kind of pricey. But in comparison to the $ you'll shell out for something dripping with grease from 5-Guys , Burger Heaven, or wherever else in the city - I think it's at least worth a shot.
Not something I'd come to every day, but a once-every-three-months kind of treat. -

New York, NY
The menu choices seem limitless and the prices are actually very good in comparison to the portion. Whenever I'm starving and need my burger fix, Jackson Hole is one of my first choices.
The burgers aren't among the best burgers out there but they're very huge, filling, and you can put just about any topping you want on them... typically I find myself adding mushrooms, goat cheese, and bacon. They are one of the few places that still put fresh tomato and lettuce on the burger as a standard so I give them credit for that. The fries always arrive soggy and suggests that they've been sitting under a lamp for way too long.
For the average person, 1 deluxe platter will be able to cover you for 2 meals. For me, it's a good and filling lunch. -

Sometimes you loose quality when there are pages and pages of burger options to choose from. Not here, food was really good. The wait may be a while, but it is worth it.

I admit, I got a little scared when I walked up to this location. The Jackson Hole I'm most used to is the diner-styled one in Bayside, so when I saw this fancy-schmancy, walk down the stairs to get in, kind of entrance, I got a slight sense of panic. That, OMG am I really gonna spend $50 for BURGERS?!?!?!?, kinda feeling.
Fortunately, that is not the case. This Jackson Hole is just as reasonably-priced as the others. The decor is Western kitsch, which is not my favorite but certainly appropriate. The food is pretty good, but my burger did not approach the orgasmic. The chicken sandwiches are actually better than the burgers. My biggest issue with their burgers is they're made extremely plain, kind of forcing you to up the ante with toppings and such. From my perspective, a burger should stand on its own, and not depend on cheese and jalapenos and bacon and avocado and whatever else to make a statement. That said, the burgers are gigantic, and very filling. A lot of bang for your buck. The fries are great, too.
Service was a little on the inattentive side. Not total ignorance, and not even close to that annoying "is everything okay?" sense of over-attention, but anytime you have to wait 5 passes by the server before she gives you a check is less than ideal.
Odd little sidebar...the bathroom is so incredibly small, they have one of those X-Celerator hand dryers in there, and every time you make the slightest movement within the room the dryer goes off. -

This is a great place to get a very generous burger for a very reasonable price in NYC.
This place, bluntly put, is a Texas-themed burger joint craftily fit into a NYC basement, complete with twisty paths and electrical meters hanging from the wall. *That* is why it is so great. In a town so often full of pretense this place shows you what you'll get right away : a great burger at a great price, and in an escapist environment where you gawk at the wall adornments more than someone sitting across the room.
Enjoy it. Eat and repeat, just not too often or you'll get a heart attack from all that red meat. Order some pickles. -
Review from Shelly A.
So I let the idea marinade in my head for a little bit. 1 year ago when I first moved to NYC I had Jackson Hole and it sucked! So I decided to wait a while and then try it again. WHAT A MISTAKE! THIS PLACE IS AWFUL. The burgers are gargantuan messes. They fall apart and the meat is worse then fast food. I got the 'Texan' Burger which has a fried egg on top. This is one of my favorite ways to eat a burger. HELLO the best part is the runny yolk meshing with the ground meat in your mouth. IF YOU COOK THE DAMN EGG ALL THE WAY THROUGH ALL YOU HAVE IS A DAMN SUNNYSIDE UP ON A BURGER...and nobody wants that.
Oh, and there was a hair in my fiance's food. He was actually almost happy when he discovered it - he said that he initially didn't like the food, but felt like he should eat it anyways as to not waste food/money. When we discovered the hair, he was relieved that he could just send the dish back and leave without feeling bad.
Jackson Hole, you completely and totally suck. There is no reason for you go to here ...AT ALL!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Talk about a (Jackson) Hole-in-the wall. Bada bump ba ching! Yeah yeah, I know that was terrible...ok, on to the review.
The food gets 4 stars; the actual restaurant gets about 2.5. I initially walked in, saw a dingy counter, and momentarily panicked as I thought that was the entire restaurant. Someone working there must have noticed my expression and told me that there was a dining room and a patio in the back. I opted patio after witnessing the travashamockery that was the dining room.
Let's get to the food. Sure Shake Shack has my heart, but it's a different type of burger. Jackson Hole has about 10 different kinds of burgers to appeal to everyone's palate. I opted for the Sante Fe burger with cheddar cheese and guacamole. Being a manly man, the bf opted for a meat-tastic burger with bacon, ham, and the actual hamburger meat smothered with an ample application of cheddar.
These are behemoth burgers. I could only finish half of mine but the bf came to play and crushed his, albeit not with feeling like he was going to pop afterwards. The burger was juicy - nothing burns my (hamburger) buns like a dry patty. Guac was surprisingly good and I appreciate their liberal application of it. Fries were ho-hum, but I highly recommend the onion rings which have an out-of-this-world crisp.
Survey says? Brave the questionable venue if you're looking for a good burger. -

It's all about the burgers here and they are HUUUGE!!
Stumbled across this place with a friend after spending the afternoon at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum... didn't know what to expect and didn't even know about the hype for the burgers but we both ordered one and oh my goodness gracious it was amazing annnnd cheap! Can't beat that. Less than $10 for my burger and fries. Quick service, maybe too quick? Just kidding, I loved it. Place seemed a little crammed but it was packed so I guess their just trying to accommodate. Can't really hate them for that.
Oh how I wish you weren't so far away from me, I'd be there all the time since my love for burgers is perpetual!Listed in: Burgers!

The entrance is literally a hole. It's downstairs underneath a brownstone. But there is lots of seating inside.
Service is dippy. I ordered a grilled chicken with cheese sandwich and the waiter asked me if I wanted fries. I said no. When I got my plate, there were fries, tomato & lettuce- it was the platter, which they charge you an extra $4 for. The waiter was rude when I told him their mistake. I don't like places that try to pull one over on you, because it doesn't work with me. We left him less than 15%. -

Just got back from New York and while I was there I had the best burger EVER! I did not eat in the restaurant, it was too packed and it was kinda a late. So I just ordered a few burgers to go for my friends and I. The employees were very nice and helpful even though they were very busy. Jackson Hole had a huge selection of burgers to choose from and they all sounded great. I don't remember the name of the burger I chose, but it was sooo good. I have yet to find a place here in Austin that serves burgers as good as this place. If anyone has some suggestions please let me know.

This is my favorite Jackson Hole location because I'm a sucker for outdoor seating when it gets warm, and yes, they have a secret garden in the back for the little girl in all of us. I've been a fan of their burgers for awhile now because of the many choices for toppings, mostly of the greasy but goody variety. Pile on the bacon and caramelized onions! I used to scratch my head wondering why the burgers here are so much better than at their Queens branch. As a chain, they should be pretty consistent, no?
Their steak fries are also the perfect crispness and thickness. If all I had were potatoes and ketchup and a deep fryer out in the middle of nowhere, and the cook to make them perfectly for me since I know jack about making fries, I could live on these for a year before I keeled over.
Jackson Hole used to be my favorite burger chain, and although their burgers still rank really high on my list, as of late, Five Guys has stolen my heart. Sorry. I still love you, but only when I want to eat my burger outdoors.Listed in: Burgers on my mind

WARNING: This reviewer has only gotten delivery from this restaurant.
When I was fat, I had huge issues eating in front of people. I was always afraid of them thinking, she shouldn't be eating all that, look at her, gross. Now that I'm a petite single digit size, I love eating huge portions of naughty food in front of people, especially on dates.
On a fourth date, we ordered this in (wink wink). I ordered the Chicken sandwich with American cheez, fried onions, and mushrooms. Then we split a chili cheese fries (probably my favorite food on the planet, perfection). My sandwich was huge and great! The fries, well probably because they were delivered were a little soggy and the chili left something to be desired.
Last night my bff and I ordered this in as well (wink wink, no!). We both ordered turkey burgers with baked potatoes. The turkey burgers were HUGE man, huge! They actually tasted and sort of had the texture of meatloaf, so that's how we both ate them. Couldn't use the bun, too sloppy even in the privacy of her gigantic home (it's huge y'all). The baked potatoes were good, it's been forever since I had one. It was a nice alternative to fries, even though I really wanted fries...
This is the place to go when you have a big appetite and just want something American, tasty and simple. I'm a fan. -

Big burgers. Lots of meat. Not expensive.
Perfect for grease monkey days.
Not great, not horrendously bad, but better than a lot of places on this stretch. Good service at least.
Margarita Murphy's serves up the similar greasy stuff but the waitress there makes me want to punch something. So I'd rather walk a little further to the hole if I ever crave a burger. Which is never. -

Now this is how a burger should be served! Fat, juicy (with lots of condiments, your bun is useless) and filling! This location is basement level, which intrigued my friend, a first time visitor, but the decor is neat. Wait, who cares about the decor... its all about the burger, damn it!!
Nothing here is done wrong. The burgers and chicken are wonderful. The fries.... yummy! Even the salads will feed a family of four. Small portions are nonexistant at Jackson Hole, and they know that is how their customers like it. Desserts... who has room for it? NYC has the best food in America and Jackson Hole is a perfect example of this.
Side note: There is a location in Astoria, not very far from LaGuardia. After flying for 5 hours eating 2 bags of peanuts, the Astoria location is a great welcome spot. -

Good food and good price. A little dingy and small interior. Has a nice small counter, a tiny dining room for about 25 ppl, as well as 4 or 5 table patio out back. Reminds me of a greasy spoon with a pretty good sized and down to earth menu.

Oh my lord, what have I DONE!?
I've only just discovered the BEST burger joint in all of America.
Knowing these burgers are bigger than your skull, I decided to split the Western burger with my man. You literally can't pick this up with two hands. It's a knife and fork affair.
The steak frites were perfectly fried and salted and the pickles!?! The pickles are so delicious, so perfect.
Apparently this was Jackie O's favorite restaurant in NYC. How'd she manage that waist line eating here all the time! Can't wait to go back. -
Review from Payam Z.
This is from a takeout experience:
This is one of those places that should get a 3.5: The burgers and particularly the burger patties are excellent but the rest leaves a lot to be desired.
You are unlikely to go wrong with almost any burger (Swiss is a good one for e.g.) as you will have a large, juicy patty that is very importantly cooked to perfection (or not, your choice!), in addition to more than decent toppings.
The fries however are much worse than almost any fast food joint (which this is not supposed to be) and as a matter of fact, I would say the fast food joint fries would taste better after spending a day in the sun (yes, at least mine were that bad each time) -
Review from Marshall H.
New York, NY
These burgers are fat (in a good way), although they aren't really as good as some other top burger joints in the city. The burger meat is tasty enough, and for around $8 you can't go wrong. And really, what Jackson Hole lacks in burger goodness it makes up for by being a "hole" in the wall type of place, as well as being a great atmosphere to enjoy a quick burger, with pretty large burgers.
I remember going here with my grandfather back in the (19)90s when I was just a kid... the place hasn't changed and nothing is more enjoyable than sitting at a counter and watching a delicious morsel of beef being grilled a few feet from you. There are a plethora of burger choices here as well -- you can even get chicken or veggie burger instead, but why would you?
The steak fries are classic and always cooked perfectly (i.e. not burnt), but even more enjoyable are the complimentary pickles -- that's the best part of the throwback burger joint experience. You definitely lose a little bit if you order delivery though, because the burgers become overcooked due to their own heat + delivery time and really Jackson Hole is about the ambiance and the experience of going to an old school burger place.
Overall impression: be prepared to use two hands for these massive burgers, and come ready to decide which of the 20+ burger options you'd like. This is a restaurant that has thrived for many years so I fully expect and look forward to bringing my own grandkids here someday.Listed in: Burger Insanity

Jackson Hole is a burger joint with various locations in the city/boroughs. The burgers are huge (at least 3/4 lb) and come with a variety of toppings. I used to come to this place because it was close to my apartment.
Walk down the stairs and get your table. Yes, it is a narrow location. Yes, you will be sitting on top of each other. Order your burger (I go sans bun) and chow down.
Be sure to check out the grill in the front. Watching those massive pieces of meat as they cook can be as mesmerizing as staring into a campfire.
