I don't understand the negative reviews on this place. If you read carefully, they're mostly nitpicky things.
I was here in August 2011 for lunch. There are not a lot of lunch choices in this area. There were 3 or 4 bagel places and several sushi places but not many diners or just plain old restaurants. Tried the Rolling Pin (just up the street) but there was a wait so walked to Jack's. It is a little bigger than the 1950's 'train car' diners. Tables are a little small but fine for lunch. The place was nearly full (only 2 tables free) which is a good sign for 130PM.
I got the special, which was a blackened tilapia sandwich with cajun fries. For $10.95 it was a bargain (most sandwiches on the regular menu were in the $9-$10 range). The fish was great- a few pieces fell out of the sandwich and without the onion and pickle relish, I could really taste the blackened fish's more delicate flavors.
They have great desserts, too. I assume they are scratch made there. I had the chocolate lava cake which was very good.
I would definitely go back!
Read my "about me" page to see how I rate establishments. This is a 3-star diner type place, but it executes well. I'd like to have a 2nd experience here before deciding it's 5 stars, so 4 stars for now... -

I really want to love Jack's. The building is a very cool little diner space, like walking back in time. Handwritten signs, waiters in T shirts, mismatched flea market tables and chairs. You can tell the owners want to make it special and funky and awesome. I want to love it. It's pretty popular.
But it's just meh. I mean, it's fine. But it's kind of expensive and I've never had anything there that makes me say wow. Every time I go there, I think that with just a little *something* more, it would become really special. -

Food is still very good, but on a recent trip, we were ignored after the server brought food to the table.
No syrup for the waffles, no ketchup for home fries, no salt and pepper shakers on table, no extra napkins, no drink refills. And it took us about 10-15 minutes to flag someone down to ask for those items. In a place so small, it shouldn't have been hard to see that we needed attention. And by the time we got someone's attention, it wasn't our server, and the person who helped us gave us the stinkeye. (Why ask us if we need anything if you're going to be surly when it turns out that we do, in fact, need you to bring us things?)
Plate of sorry-looking fruit (two light-pink strawberries, 1/4 of an apple, 2 slices of orange and 4 small slices of honeydew) was $7.50.
For these reasons, I'm very sad to have to downgrade Jack's. We might go back, but I they're officially On Notice.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Went here today with wife and 1 year old son. Have been here a few times before. The service is friendly but busy, chaotic and harried. Messed up my order and didn't bring us stuff when they should, was somewhat ignored even though the place was only mostly busy. Seemed like they were understaffed. The food here is better than a diner at diner prices, but if I don't get what I want and it takes forever, what's the point?
If they can get their service up to snuff when it's busy, cause well, that's when people are there, duh, then they will get an upgrade from me, cause the food is really good. -

Where to begin... visited here on second night after we moved to New Jersey, lost in our new world and Jack's was a welcoming oasis of tasty food and nice people. We've been back at least once every month since and are always pleased with our choices. Personal favourite - black bean soup. It is upmarket diner fare with options even for a vegetarian like me. Big fan.

I had the worst and most unappealing Lox platter in my life. The lettuce was all dead and dry, salmon was very little and looked bad. They forgot the cream cheese and brought it at the end of my breakfast. The sandwiches others with me had were better than my lox. I guess the best thing was the hot chocolate my children had.

Not only is the food at Jack's Cafe always delicious, fresh and fabulously prepared...but the special care given by owner, Chris and his team is fantastic! And, if you want a sure-fire hit at your party, try Jack's Cafe catering menu. Today, we started 2012 off with a bang at our Sunday brunch - complete with Jack's sandwich platter and sesame noodles. As a hostess, I love getting rave reviews - and in my case, it's my choice of Jack's Cafe for our scrumptious catered lunch! Always guaranteed to delight, my hat's off to Chris and to Jack's Cafe.

Jack's Cafe is a shining star in an otherwise mediocre array of restaurants.
Jack's is more of a joint, than i would say a restaurant, it's small but has a great local jersey charm. The staff is fun and personable and makes you feel welcome.
We've been to Jack's about a half a dozen times and always enjoy the offerring. The cuban sandwich is particularly good as is the chicken salad.
I can highly recommend giving Jack's a try, stop in for lunch or brunch you won't be disappointed.
Don't leave with trying a slice of pie... -

I've eaten at Jack's Cafe several times and I am a FAN. It used to be a an old fashioned 50's style diner or some sort , then a Chock Full of Nuts, then some other cafe with some woman's namesake -all which were sub par, but thankfully Jack's came along.
It's perfect fare for the space - standard american fare with interesting culinary twists and quirky names. It's not trying to be anything more than what it is - a great little spot for some good eats.
The staff is great - friendly, funny, and accommodating. The specials are tasty - I love going for Brunch, Lunch, and Dinner. Under the right circumstances - I would gladly sell a kidney for their Cuban Sandwich.
Some other reviewer mentioned she didn't like it because the space was like a bus. Well, its an old fashioned diner (which have the mobile-bus interior) - THAT IS WHAT IT IS. It's like, you go to a tiny hole in the wall cafe and complain that it's a hole in the wall. Go and enjoy Jacks Cafe! Get a Piece of Pie while you're there, too! -

Yes I am aware that I am giving 5 stars to a lunch car diner!
But they earned it. And if you read my reviews, you know that 5 stars have to be earned.and that I am a TOUGH GRADER! ( ASK MY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS LOL)
My girlfriend and I met up with one of her close friends and she suggested this place for lunch. The beaten down dump exterior on the outside left me a little worried at first. However, when I inspected the menu, I saw they had an eclectic variety of dishes that left me intrigued and made me want to try it. I'm glad I did!
Food: 5 stars
I ordered their version of the cheese steak appropriately called "Jack's cheese steak" which came with a garlic herb cheese sauce that piqued my curiosity and ordered it with fries. I was blown away by this sandwich. The cheese steak was sliced paper thin and cooked just right. The meat itself was not seasoned very much but didn't need to be.
The garlic herb cheese sauce that came on the sandwich was AWESOME! I would have never thought to pair that with cheese steak. It brought the flavor of the meat out well. I devoured the sandwich. The garlic flavor was strong but not overpowering. It was one of the best cheese steaks I ever had.
The fries were tasty and had a distinct crunch on them not usually seen in diners. Not the best fries ever but very good. No Complaints!
However, I was really impressed that they did not advertise the sandwich as a "Philly Cheese steak". I hate it when diners or establishments in general advertise something as "Philly Cheese steak" when it's not. It's an insult to the customer to claim something is authentic when it is not. They had their own spin on it which I appreciated.
My girlfriend ordered the filet Mignon with eggs special and she was pleased with it. It came with Home fries and an English muffin. I conveniently sampled the Home Fries (LOL translation stole a bite) and they were cooked well! No complaints.
However If I wanted to nitpick, I could deduct a half a star for a slightly under seasoned filet mignon in my opinion plus the English muffin was not buttered (Butter was brought separately) but since my girlfriend was happy that's all that matters :)
Her friend ordered a Turkey sandwich with Brie and Honey Mustard. She was very happy with it and to be honest, I should have stole a bite from her too LOL. Turkey was fresh and the brie and honey mustard combination seemed to work well.
Service: 5 stars:
We had an outstanding waiter, one of the best I have ever had! (This is a huge compliment! I have a special loathing for food service people! THEY GET THERE OWN STAGE OF HELL! Long story LOL)
He knew the specials inside and out and was constantly refilling our beverages without having to be told. That's a sign of professionalism and competence. I asked the waiter to repeat the specials before we decided to order and he did it without an iota of disdain or annoyance. Very Impressed!
Atmosphere: 5 stars:
He interior is very funky. It's the kind of place you would find on DDD with Guy Fieti. They put the specials on the wall in big letters with chalk, which I thought was a clever touch. It's very small yet you don't feel crammed like sardines. It's has a very classic feel to it.
Verdict! I hate clichés but in this case "Don't judge a book by its cover". The food is really good and the service is even better. I will DEFINITELY be back here again. -

Like eating in a friend's kitchen. Chris puts together a creative menu that is delicious. Sometimes the servers get overwhelmed and the service suffers, but not often.

Ok, while I feel a little silly giving a five-star rating and page-long review to a diner-type establishment, the food and service at Jack's cafe absolutely deserve it.
The first time I was at Jack's, I hadn't heard anything about it - I was there for brunch with a friend who is particularly unadventurous when it comes to food, so I assumed it was just a diner (the atmosphere may have had something to do with that perception). I had fantastic eggs Benedict, he had some awesome pancakes, and we went on with our lives.
Fast-forward a few months, after Jack's had gotten a great review in a local paper. My parents went one night and came home raving. Now, anyone who knows my parents know that they can be very picky, so I was really excited to hear this. Since their initial visit, I've been there three times with them (twice in the past week - unheard of in the M family!).
The first time there I had the lobster roll, which was really tasty. The price was comparable to, if not a little better than, other places, and the sandwich itself was a delight. The lobster salad is fresh and mild, and the baguette was just crusty enough to be substantial, but not so crusty or dense that it overwhelmed the lobster. The sandwich came with sweet potato fries, which were crispy and delicious.
The next time I went I got the cheese steak sandwich; I was wavering between that or a burger, but our server informed us that the cheese steak had recently been voted "best in..." something, so I went with that. It was really a lovely sandwich; instead of the yellow cheese you find on a Philly cheese steak, they use a mild and creamy garlic and herb cheese that is mixed in with the sliced steak. The flavor is subtle and delicious. This time I had the regular fries, which were so fresh that some of them were still sizzling with hot oil. The fries were those ones that look like they've been battered; these are my absolute favorite, and Jack's did not disappoint.
This time around, my parents ordered burgers, and had high compliments for them. My dad's one complaint was that his burger was cooked a little more than he liked it. My argument was that if you're going to order a burger medium-rare, but a little more on the rare side, and it comes out medium-rare, well, you're still doing all right. I think the fact that we spent most of our menu time saying things like "well, maybe this time I'll get the burger and NEXT time I'll get the tilapia" was a good sign.
The third time I went was last night; we brought my sister and her boyfriend as well. We started with some fried calamari, which was fantastic. As a bonus, they use the calamari that comes with tentacles! A lot of places don't do that these days; do they not know that the tentacles are the best part? We also ordered the crab cakes appetizer. Normally I find crab cakes overrated - too much cake and not enough crab often leave them dry and saw-dusty. However, Jack's crab cakes are a delight. They are moist and flavorful, with delicious chunks of crab.
This brings me to my next point: the seafood at Jack's is really outstanding. This fact surprised me, as the restaurant does not look fancy at all, and for some reason I associate good seafood with some level of fancy. Last night my dad ordered the veal stuffed with seafood, and it was wonderful. The veal was so tender that he didn't even have to use a knife, and the seafood was fresh and tasty. My sister also ordered a crab bisque that was delicious. I'm always a little wary of bisques and chowders in restaurants; it's easy to make them too salty or too creamy, but Jack's hit a perfect balance. My sister's boyfriend had the open-faced steak sandwich. We were at opposite ends of the table, so I didn't get to ask him about it, but it came out smothered in gravy and huge chunks of mushroom that barely hid the generous slices of steak underneath.
After looking at the other reviews on here, I'm disappointed that we've never had dessert at Jack's - we just always finish our meals so stuffed and satisfied that we've never had the chance!
I should also mention that the service is really good. Our servers have always been really friendly, helpful, and honest about menu items. The owner is often around and makes a point to check in with the tables to see how everything's going.
I hope that Jack's is around for a long time! -

We recently moved to the area from Jersey City, and have been somewhat disappointed by the restaurant selection. Jack's has been a shining star, and someplace that we're returned to over and over again. The food is always interesting - standard fare with an innovative twist. The daily specials make it fun to go back and try something new. The wait-staff is ultra-kind and always glad to see you. It's BYOB, so i always bring my favorite beer. The homemade desserts are amazing.
This has quickly turned into one of our favorite places to go to in the Hillsdale/Westwood area both for brunch and dinner.
If I had to find a complaint, I would say that sometimes when we go later at night, they have at times closed before the hours posted. -

Shockingly good!
Jack's is as dingy-looking and tiny a place as you'll find in Westwood, but I urge you to go inside and give it a shot. This review is not based on a fancy restaurant, but rather a great diner-type restaurant.
Make no mistake, this is a little diner. But you won't find too much "normal" diner food. Instead, there is an eclectic menu with lots of mouth-watering choices. I ordered the filet mignon & eggs special, which was delicious. The eggs were perfectly cooked and the filet melted in my mouth, was flavorful and also perfectly cooked. It required salt, but just about everything does with me! When I requested butter for the perfectly cooked english muffin that came with it, butter was brought to the table within seconds. My boyfriend had Jack's cheesesteak, which was a cheesesteak with some sort of herb spread on it and perfectly cooked onions. This was probably the best sandwich I've ever tried - garlicy, soft but not gummy bread, steak, YUM. For $1, it was served with crispy perfect fries. Our friend had a turkey and brie sandwich which she also enjoyed a lot.
Although it looked dingy on the outside, Jack's was very clean on the inside. With the exception of one leaky air conditioner, everything seemed well-maintained.
Above all else, the service was exceptional. None of our drinks got more than halfway empty for even a few seconds without being filled. Our server was available the whole time but never hovered. He knew the menu and specials cold and didn't even react when we requested that he repeat the specials for us.
I can't wait to go back! -

We had a nice dinner here. The service was good-in fact some party said they were us and 'took' our reservation. The restaurant corrected the error and sat us at the next avaliable table. We had tasty stuffed mushrooms then pasta primavera and sole with a white wine fresh tomato sauce. it is BYOB and the menu had salads, burgers, sandwiches, pasta and a few specials. The desserts were popular (it seemed the approach was to go up to the counter and look over the nightly treats).
Worth a trip from the neighboring towns. -

I love Jack's! We stop in for breakfast/lunch whenever we're in town. I'd say the lunches are better than the breakfasts, but not by much.
If you're looking for a quick meal, this is probably NOT the best place to go.. they usually only have one waitress working the whole place on a weekday morning, but if you've got time, then it's worth trying. They have unique specials every day... They stop serving breakfast pretty early..11:30 or 12, which kind of bothers me, since I'm definitely a breakfast kinda lady.
The chicken salad is AWESOME! And you definitely want to hit up the desserts! There was some sort of berry pie over the summer that was more than worth the calories.
I recall having a pretty amazing omelet with avocados and grandma had eggs benedict and couldn't stop talking about how FRESH it was! Good coffee and good home fries (very important diner staples.)
One negative... the place is kinda teensy. It's just really small in there... and the bathrooms are kinda too close to the seating for me. You're practically tripping over people to get in there. Don't let that deter you from going! Just hope you're lucky and get a seat that's far away from the bathrooms! -

The owners and staff at Jack's Cafe are wonderful. They are so friendly and outgoing it makes the whole experience that much better.
We go to Jack's at least once a week. It is a great casual stop that serves great food made to order.
Last night I started with a cup of chicken gumbo. I really like their soups. It was thick and delicious. In the past I have enjoyed the crab bisque and the chicken dumpling.
Wife started with the fried brie bites. She enjoyed them immensely. They were perfectly fried, not too greasy and the cheese was nicely melted.
Their blackboard usually has an enticing list of daily entree specials along with the soups and desserts.
Wife had blackened salmon on top of some miso buckwheat noodles. It also had some raw broccoli, mushrooms, carrots and peppers. She had enough noodles leftover to bring home for lunch the next day. It was a daily special.
I went with the Cuban sandwich. Ham, pulled pork, swiss cheese, pickles and mustard pressed on a hero roll. Perfect. It is always on the menu.
For dessert we had a great piece of homemade carrot cake. Excellent cream cheese frosting. Not too sweet.
Last nights conversation with staff and owners went from Tom Waits to Bruce Springsteen to Memphis. Good times. -

Love Jack's. Simple food but with a twist. Friendly service and really great cooking brings me back time and time again. Some fav's...
Breakfast - My husband adores the crab cakes benedict. They don't skip on the crab and while hollandaise is not one of my personal fav's this stuff is legit. Their belgium waffles and french toast are some of the best in the area.
Lunch - Jack's special cheesesteak - take a really good cheesesteak and make it even better with boursin cheese added in to the mix, so juicy and yummy. Dill-berry chicken salad - either on sandwich or in a salad this is the best chicken salad I've ever had. You'd think the fresh dill would be overwhleming but it's not. Add in some cranberries and grapes and it's addictive.
Dinner - They make an angel hair pasta with mushrooms, artichokes, sun-dried tomatoes with a white wine sauce that is to die for. The southwest egg roll's with fresh black beans are crunchy, salty goodness in a wrapper. Open sliced steak sandwich with mushroom gravy cooked to perfection (I prefer medium rare).
This is just a small sampling of what Jack's has to offer. You'll just have to see what else they have for yourself. -

A better name for Jack's Cafe would Jack's Bus. Because that's the exact size of this restaurant. It's narrow and noisy...and not that good old comfortable happy-people-talking kind of noise but just the annoying din of shrieking waiters and angry cooks. On the night I was there, the air conditioning was not working. Sweet!
After awkwardly standing way-too-close to tables filled with diners (since Jack's is, you know...the size of a bus) for what seemed like hours, we were finally seated and promptly forgotten for a good 10 minutes. By the time we received menus from The Absent Minded Waiter, I was ready to go. It was too hot and noisy and crowded. And too narrow. There was about one foot between my elbows and the elbows of the next table. The menu is pretty standard. Burgers, salads, pasta, blah blah blah. I got a burger...it was okay. Nothing special. Nothing terrible. I've forgotten what my companions got, but whatever it was I assure you it was also nothing special.
I don't understand why this place is so popular. It's okay. (But priced as if it were great.) I guess it's a 'fun' place for kids, but for people like me (quiet, unfriendly and perpetually annoyed) it was pure hell. Too noisy, too rushed, too much forced camaraderie. I doubt I'll be catching this bus again any time soon. -

I read the rave reviews and hoped for a great brunch. But sadly, it was not to be. We arrived on a cold Sunday and were greeted warmly, which came in handy due to the chill in the air. The waitress noticed our chill
and turned the space heater on, which was VERY close to our table.
The waiter tried to be upbeat while squeezing between tables
placed uncomfortably close together, so close the waiter and the gal pouring coffee collided at our table. On to the food....Eggs Benedict
served with burnt home fries on a chipped (Two VERY noticeable chips) I
showed my friend, who offered to switch plates, until she looked at her plate which also had a rather large chip, which actually went well with the creamer with the broken lid. I guess the food was tasty but the entire experience left a bad taste in my mouth. Too bad. -

what a real gem of a resturant. the food is just wonderful, very inventive. I had the stuffed pork chops last night which was wonderful. Also the Talapia was great, soup, lima bean very unique. Been there a few times and won't be returning. The food is okay, but overpriced for the quality. I would avoid at all costs for breakfast. Once I was served an egg that was grossly raw, and got attitude for sending it back. Another time I was served a pancake that was raw on the inside. Got more than attitude this time - the owner/manager also prorated the meal! Because I had already eaten two thirds of the pancake he only took 30% off the price! All of this while I was pregnant! It's not about the money here, its just an embarrassing way to conduct business.

Jack's cafe is an adorable place that is great to go to with a friend for a weekday lunch. I've been there a few times, and every time I go I find something new and delicious. Last time I had an amazing salad with crabcakes that were spiced to perfection. Really, they were quite outstanding. The sweet potato fries are delicious, and they are really nice people, with the chef coming out to say hi often. It is smaller, and cozy, a little on the casual side, but overall a nice place.

The food was pretty decent. I had the grilled eggplant, tomato, cheese and pesto wrap. Nothing to out of this world, but still good. My friend said that the crab bisque was amazing and that the tomato and cheese sandwich was something that she could have made for herself at home. My other friend got the ceaser salad - again it was good but nothing special. The one thing that I really did like about this place was that they had a number of different types of breads and wraps that you could choose from. You didn't have to stick to wheat, rye and white only.

I had dinner last night at Jack's with my husband for the first time. We both ordered specials: a nut-crusted grouper fillet with mashed potatoes and sauteed vegetables for him, and the Cajun bean soup and loster roll with sweet potato fries for me. We loved the food--very bistro, very homestyle. The carrot cake we shared for dessert was incredible and clearly homemade too--you could tell by looking at it, plus it was very dense and not too sweet. About the service: I really don't care for obsequious servers. Just be somewhat nice and don't ignore me, that's all I ask. So when our waiter showed that he really cared about our dining experience, then I was really impressed. It turned out that he was the owner's son, and at the end of the meal we also chatted with the owner himself. They were delightful to talk to, and clearly they take real pleasure in making and serving food. I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 for the simple reason that the atmosphere could be improved. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's not romantic or artistic in any way--just very basic. I can't wait to go back and try more dishes!

We can't come to Jack's anymore! You're pretentious "greeter" guy with his chrome biker belt takes our appetites away. He reads to us what is on the specials board. We can read. He doesn't do any of the work, serving food or busing tables, but shares our tip money. He's LOUD, so we can't even ignore him. And your diner car doesn't need to pretend it's the Ritz-Carlton. Your superior food accomplishes that. What nights is he off?

We moved to Westwood a few months ago, and are just trying out local restaurants now. Jack's is on Broadway right across from the train station. Easy to find, although unassuming from the outside. At 7:00pm on a Saturday, nearby parking was plentiful. The place was busy, but we were able to sit right down. They have a large, varied, reasonably-priced menu of regular items for a restaurant of that size, as well as a "specials" board with 7 or 8 items. My wife and I ordered 2 of the specials: Cajun Blackened Tilapia over Jambalaya and Tex-Mex Pork Medallions. Both were delicious. Nice blends of flavors without any one being overpowering. The fish and the pork were large portions and well-cooked...i.e, "done" without being overdone. Our waiter (John) was attentive and engaging. While we were there, we saw a couple of larger families having Saturday dinner, and other smaller groups dropping in for sandwiches or soup before being on their way, giving the place a great local "homey" feel. It is BYOB, which we appreciate. We'll take advantage of that next time. Jack's will be a regular stop for us, and we'll take friends who visit there as well.

this place is a very very decent place to eat. i went there with a friend, ordered the chicken and brie sandwich (i asked for it on baguette) with a side of sweet potato fries. my order came out with regular fries instead, but they were very accommodating and brought me the sweet potato when i mentioned the error. typically i like my sweet potato fries thin (these were thicker) but they were still pretty good, fried to the perfect crisp consistency. my sandwich was delicious. my friend's lobster ravioli was YUMMY- creamy, well-seasoned, and tasted so homemade... the staff was so nice and made sure everything was okay. jack's cafe, "I'LL BE BACK."
