You only have a few bucks in your pocket and you need to find a gift.  Where do you go?  Jack's of course!  This place has everything, and I mean EVERYTHING!  Three floors of affordable stuff.  I picked up an Ipod charger, a bluetooth and some gum from here today and my pocket didn't get a hole in it from the price.  You need milk?  Check.  Candy?  Check.  Wrapping paper?  Check.  Socks?  Electronic gadgets? Housewares?  I can go on and on.....

This should be your FIRST stop when looking for anything in the city.  The cheapest place in town.  Guaranteed.

Jack's is the Cheap Guy's Temple, Church and Mosque all rolled into one. I am a lifelong committed fan and disciple of Jack's and I love thee.

This 32nd Street location is the largest and has everything that the other two locations have rolled into one, which includes a massive food section, office supplies, household products and yikes! Clothing?  Yes, they have that too.  I'll admit that I've bought everything from Jack, with the exception of clothing.  Maybe that's a good idea! Oh yes, and this place is the only Jack's location that sell Jack's gift cards.  I wonder how that will go over?

P.S. Not everything is 99 cents, but close.  You get the picture!

The place is an oasis of cheap deals. My mother had discovered this place 5 yrs ago and has been faithful since. At times she will take my metro card to travel from brooklyn to manhattan just for this store alone. Yeah, its thats awesome.

They have everything- on the first floor- candy, chips, cookies, school supplies, hair accessories, toiletries, pantyhose, birthday cards, seasonal items, etc al for a dollar each.

Second floor- toys, electronics, luggage, home items, crystals, books, better chocolates (lindt chocolates, hershey pot of gold)-- now we are entering $1.99 and up based on what you buy- def cheaper than other places

Thirs floor- MAKEUP OASIS, we are looking at some dept store makeup- estee lauder, lancome, etc- its a hit or miss, lot of retail make up- covergirl, maybelline, shampoos, lotions, perfumes, other electronics, more home items,

In essence this place is awesome , whether you need water, an umbrella, or a gift for someone. This should be your first stop on shopping voyage. =)

WOW!!
I had other plans today but my big sister decided to show me the gateway to discount heaven!!!
The makeup brushes that I had been searching for since I have been in the north were right there by the check out counter..
I think I bought 26 different brushes..and I damn sure plan on getting more!!
I was a kid in a candy store or an ecclectic fashion neo soul rocker hip hop loving woman in a discount store..the music was way cute for the expierence I couldn't help but shake it a little as i dumped items into my basket..I know my limits so I dared not to even go upstair...
everything I bought was 99 cents but I will be back Jack
Perfection..

YAY!  Lots of stuff for CHEAP.  Even groceries.  Decent groceries with a pretty broad variety.  Check the expiration dates for refrigerated foods and breads--you may need to eat quickly.

Upstairs prices are a bit higher, but still cheaper than most other places in the vicinity.

All in all, a great place to visit to spend a bit of the paycheck and get a lot in return.

Even though I'm giving the 5 star accolade... Jack's pissed me off more than ever today for making me ponder the following throughout my walk around the store:

1. Why the %^& did I buy toiletries from Duane Reade?
2. Why the &$%# did I buy snacks from Whole Foods
3. Why the &%^$ did I spend money on arbitrary makeup at Sephora?

because at that moment, I knew the answer to all of those questions.....

IF I HAD KNOWN ABOUT JACKS BEFORE TODAY, THAT SH*T WOULDNT HAVE EMPTIED MY BANK ACCOUNT!!!!!!!!!

Today I decided I will now frequent Jack's for many essential items in my life including: my toothpaste, gummy bears, moisturizer, a new toaster if I ever need one, party supplies if I ever decide to throw a party, school supplies if I ever go back to school, random lipsticks and eyeshadows (even Benefit and Stila), the occasional box of fudgsicles, perhaps some hamburger buns for an outside barbecue?

Basically ... if I didn't make it clear.........Jack's is huge, cheap, and fun as sh*t.

Hello, economic recession! How are you today? Good? Well, I'm fine as well. Why? Because when I can't afford Whole Foods organic and shoes from Bloomingdale's...I'll always have Jack's to fall back on.

While you need not take it so far as to fill your wardrobe with itchy weird smelling slacks from the bowels of Jack's, it is nice to save moola when you can. While not everything is strictly $0.99, it's all pretty darn cheap. I doubt they have anything in the store over $10 but they have an incredibly vast selection within these über cheapo parameters.

Things you might go here for:
- cheap party supplies (plastic cups, plates, tablecloths, balloons, etc)
- frozen food and chips...really unhealthy food full of preservatives and boiled gizzards
- school supplies like backpacks and pencils and pads of paper with only 20 sheets
- low grade kitchen ware ... pots, pans, bowls (wash in VERY hot water first)
- ugly ill-fitting clothes...that I'll probably wear in 40 years
- simple hardware needs - power cords, paint brushes, safety pins

You get what you pay for and It's probably horrible for the environment and human beings, but Jack's fills the niche for "crap I don't want to spend a fortune on" in my daily life.

You can find real bargains here. I always come here to buy birthday decor, ribbons, bags, paper. The first floor they sell food, which is very crowded and i never go by, The 3rd floor here is great, they sell discounted cosmetics from brand like L'Oreal, elizabeth arden, Clarins. Some discounted perfumes as well like Calvin Klein, Pink Sugar, Donna Karan....
This is the type of store u need to look around and find some money saving finds.

This is the best and biggest discount store I've ever been to (better than Lot Less, Big D's, the little 99 cent shops everywhere, or even the other Jacks locations). If you're shopping here for everything in life chances are you're either homeless, white trash, or live in a slum; BUT you'd be an idiot if you didn't shop here for something. There are other Jacks in the city but this is the biggest by far with 3 large floors. You can pretty much get anything there from food and kitchen appliances to bedding and toys to seasonal decorations and clothes. Like any good NY discount store they have a big selection of 99 cent items on the first floor but they go well beyond that. Most of the items are poor quality knock off of name brands (like the look-a-like ipod for $30), the products will still do in a pinch as long as you know what you're getting, but they also have name brand items at close out prices which is a great addition.

In my experience the place was clean and tidy and the cashier was pleasant, not to mention they take cards. If you're in the area or need something you think might be here it's worth browsing Jacks for a bargain.

With the small budget I have, it is imperative that I become familiar with all the discount and dollar stores in the city. Jack's has more than fulfilled my needs. (BTW, this review is for the 99 cent portion, which is the first floor.)

I've mostly bought food from here. I have also bought air fresheners, but they turned out to not work, so in that respect, you get what you pay for. Contrary to what some of the other reviewers think, the food actually isn't that bad. The bread selection is a first come, first serve kind of thing, meaning that because I've only shopped there at 3 in the afternoon, I've only been able to get crappy loaves. However, the fresh challah and bagels have more than made up for that experience. They also sell lunch meat and eggs that are alright, and not spoiled or anything. Lastly, they sell Diet Pepsi, etc., for a discounted price.

The aisles are small, and the store is perpetually crowded, making for a bad combination. The lines can get long, but there are several registers and they do tend to move fairly quickly. This is my go-to place for when I want cheap food (and partly because I don't know of any place else).

Good luck finding shaving supplies in this store now. And talking to an employee on the floor is like talking to the wall.
Also fewer and fewer items are 99 cents anymore.

Jack's is huge and can be overwhelming, (that's what she said) but after hearing so much about this place I decided to go and see if I can get some actual good deals. What ended up happening is that I found a LOT of great deals. Examples:
- 24 pack of Trojans (they all worked!)
- Nail polish in a color that only Essie makes but I found an exact copy
- Dry Erase board
- Wine Opener/corkscrew thingy
- Lots o candy

It gets really really packed, and not everything is 99 cents so make sure you come here when you have patience and aren't in a rush.

Drinking out of plastic champagne flutes = really freaking classy.

I had to buy about 150 plastic champagne flutes. Because not only am I really freaking classy, but because I have a lot of really freaking classy friends.

Jack's 99 Cent Store is the ONLY place around that had this many awesome flutes,* and they gave me a phenomenal price.** I'm going to come back to Jack's for all my plastic champagne flute needs.

They also have all sorts of plasticware for parties, in addition to tons of other cheap stuff. Honestly, wandering around both floors gave me the impression that they have almost anything you'd need to throw a party.

*I don't know that. This was the first place I tried.
**It cost me $45 for 150 flutes. That might be a good price, I really have no frame of reference.

I love this place...I get my soap there...Oil of Olay..hahahaha

I was once here with a friend and he pointed to a female...she was ok...he said look at that sexy woman...she knows how to save money...she is frugal...I want one of those...I was intrigued...now...if some decent looking girl propositioned me in the 99 cent store, armed with this new perspective, I would definitely give her my number.  However, I would demand $1.08 in return (sorry we don't charge sales tax, we only collect it).

This place is big.  You can buy almost anything, including it seems, my phone number...

Awesome deals. However, do not come here if you are in a pissy mood, as the slow granny walkers will make you want to donkey punch the back of their hairnet.  Great deals on cosmetics, food, cleaning supplies, and hell...just about everything else.   Just not for the claustrophobic.

First floor is the 99cent section, and the other floors are more expensive, but still great deals.

A colleague of mine recently wondered aloud, "Where can I find plastic champagne flutes?"

I recall thinking, "Jack's 99 Cent Store" though I can't be sure I was actually able to utter that coherently (and for that I blame Rock-n-Sake's excellently priced happy hour sake.)

The truth is, you can find almost any plastic accoutrement in this sprawling store. My last visit yielded trays and other serving implements for a party. I was tempted by large bags of jelly beans but forced myself to stay on track and picked up coordinating napkins instead.

I'm not brave enough to buy edible items here but if it's party wares you're after, Jack's is a good bet.

The 99 cent store can be a dangerous place for the impulse purchaser, but who doesn't love a good bargain?

I know I have to control myself while I am browsing through the three large floors of the store.  For holiday items, you can't go wrong at Jack's.  For Pita and Greek bread, they have you covered. Swiss and chicken-flavored boca burgers?  Yup, they sometimes carry those too!

For the huge bargain hunter, you can definitely wade through the massive amount of items and find great things here.

We've been itching to come here for weeks now but never made it -- finally got around to making a visit today! I'm not going to be adding anything interesting since it looks like everyone has everything covered but there is a ton of stuff here!

Ground floor are all 0.99 - 1.29, and most everything there are great deals. The second and third floors don't seem to be as great with the deals but then again I wasn't as extensive as I was with the first floor. Just in case you're wondering some things that were 1.29, over the 99 cent limit, on the ground floor included: box of cereal, some frozen items. I was very interested in the baked items including their large muffins and their pound cakes -- they look sooooo good, but then I looked @ the calories. Um...550 calories for one...slice. Yeah. 99 cents or not, I think I'll pass...unfortunately. :'(

Considering I come from California where there are dollar stores in every city, it's great to find that you can still find some affordable things here in NYC. Yay for Jack's!

It's hard to hate on a $0.99 store in the city in a recession. You can find some good deals here. Personally I don't like buying food in a dollar store but other things it's okay. Maybe not the best quality but it will do. Not everything is $0.99 though as the upstairs part of the store is more expensive but still decent bargains. I have yet to see this store not crowded and hard to walk through.

When I was first told to go to Jack's, I never imagined I would end up loving it this much. I like to get a good discount as much as the next person, but it depends on what I have to go through to get it... or so I thought. Despite the extremely overcrowded nature of the store which makes you virtually powerless to move at your own pace, I keep returning.

Jack's also has odd hours, closing at either 6:45 or 7:45 and not open before 10 on Sundays.

Don't make the mistake of bringing your cart from downstairs to upstairs, as the security can be a bit anal. In fact, I went upstairs to grab some of the 99 cents yogurt pretzels and then went to pay for them with the rest of my stuff downstairs, and some ridiculuos security guard (female, of course) walkie-talkied to the guy downstairs to send me back up to pay for them. I said they are the same pretzels carried downstairs (which they ARE) but they had just run out, and she made up something like there is a different bar code on them. The cashier didn't even scan them, but simply entered .99 into the cash register. Like a previous reviewer said, don't come here if you are in a bad mood, because it really does take a lot out of you...

I can't even tell you some of the amazing things I have gotten here for 1.29 +tax... Brie cheese with herbs, Kozy Shack Rice Pudding, odd things-- but it seems like there is always something that makes me say Ohh! that I end up buying even if I didn't necessairly need it. So, if you are an impulisive shopper as well, this might be your heaven or your hell!

I live in a neighboorhood where 99 cent stores are placed in every block, and Jack's 99 Cent Store is the store that combined all the 99 cent stores in my neighborhood.

Having to go there, I probably spent 2-3 hours shopping trying to find every day needs, I have to say, this place is probably the best place I've ever been in.

One flaw though, is that this place has three floors and some security woman is up on the second floor making me pay my items before going downstairs, maybe because they're scared of things being stolen, but I was hoping after browsing I could go back to the first floor again to see what else I was missing. I had to pay on the second floor so I didn't have the time or the patience to go look around the first floor again. Next time I will remember to look around the first floor couple of times before going to the second or third floor.

So I'm a total bargain shopper--I believe on saving on simple things as much as possible!

First, this place has pretty much everything, second it's dirt cheap!

They have three floors filled with food, house ware, games, makeup, appliance's, etc..!

Come here if you need anything on a dime, the quality isn't always the best BUT it's convenient and prices are very reasonable!

An adventure. You never know what you'll find. Yes, there is a lot of crap, but that's part of the fun; this place can seem almost as much a kitsch museum as a shop.

Plus, you can be sure to find cheap things like stationery, colorful cheapie toys that make good gifts for kids, party decorations.

It's clean and not dank and depressing in the way some stores in this category can be.

This place is huge! I'm a big fan of 99 cent stores and when I left Manhattan Mall on the wrong side, I stumbled upon it. I just had to take a trip inside.

I've been here a few times.

It's very crowded [especially during the Christmas season] but it's worth it! You'll find many discount items and cheap things :P

The second floor is my favorite because it has baking goods. It used to sell nice pans, but now it doesn't anymore. This is where I bought my cookie sheet for five dollars (:

The third floor has more stuff at cheaper prices. All that stuff that Rite Aid and Duane Reade can't sell? Jack's 99 Cent Store buys it and sells it to us for cheaper! Yay, Jack! (And I saw Rite Aid tags on the items so I would assume so.) Where else can you get cheap makeup and Lindt bars? (:

The store advertises that it's worth the travel, but um, not really (for me, I live an hour away...). Only if you're going there to get a BUNCH of things.

As announced, Jack's is indeed the Bloomingdales of all 99 cent stores.  I really am not a fan of 99 cent stores since they all seem to sell the same outdated crap that you won't use, flimsy products or stuff that you can get in the regular supermarket for 69 cents.  Not Jack's, though!

At Jack's, there's a random rotation of crap sold for 99 cents.  Well, only some stuff is crap.  Other items sold are things you didn't really know you needed but they're only 99 cents so maybe you do need them after all?  Or at least that's my thought process.  I've gotten things like a laundry bag (still in good condition years later), contact lense cases, good ace bandages (that go for about $12-15 at the drug store), socks and lots of other randome stuff I forgot.  They're also a deal on drinks if you're thirsty.

But it doesn't stop there.  On the second and third floor, there's Jack's World.  No, it's not 99 cents, but there's lots of great finds at major discounts.  You can furnish your bathroom there.  You can buy nice, inexpensive drapes.  You can totally accessorize your apt there.  You can buy appliances there.  You can also buy shampoo, conditioner and other beauty supplies.

Perhaps my best find was my very favorite pot.  I use this pot all the time.  I cook in it.  I steam in it.  I even make hot chocolate in it.  I pretty much abuse it and after a few years, it's still in great condition.  You know how great a pot it is?  It's so great, that all of all the stuff I had in my ex's place when I lived there, this pot is the only thing he tried to steal from my stuff.  But I found it.  And it's still with me!  Take that, sucker!

So far all the random crap I've found over the years, and for my very favorite pot in the world, I've dedicated my 200th review to you, Jack's.  I've also dedicated a pretty hefty chunk of my income to you, but that's another story.

I've only been here twice but I'm already a fan.  My first trip to Jack's was unplanned -- I had left my sunglasses home on a sunny day that I had planned to spend outdoors so my friend recommended stopping at Jack's.  We were in and out within a few minutes and I scored a stylish, functional pair of 99-cent sunglasses -- perfect as a spare set if I ever needed them.

I went back to Jack's more recently when I decided to treat my coworkers to some baked goods.  While the store was somewhat of a madhouse due to the holiday frenzy, I was still able to maneuver my way around and find everything I needed.  Aluminum take-home containers, stick-on bows and X-mas cards, for $2.97 plus tax?  Perfect.  I even bought two calendars for my cousins, which each have original retail prices of $12+ printed on them.

The two bottom floors are HUGE, stocked to the brim and it looks like there's more stuff on the third floor, though I didn't have time to see.  When I couldn't find the tins I was looking for, the staff was helpful and informative.  If I was living in the city, I might have paid more attention the food items on the first floor -- I'm sure the prices were more reasonable (i.e. normal) compared to typical Manhattan supermarket prices (i.e. astronomical).

The only thing that could've been better was the check-out process.  While there were plenty of lines to choose from, I somehow ended up on the slowest line ever.  I wish there was a more orderly process but considering the amazing deals I got, a few extra minutes on line was nothing I was going to complain about.

Like Heroin for a TRUE discount Addict.  There are probably 7,000 discount dollar stores in New York State. I can almost guarantee you will NEVER find one better then this one.  EVER!! Even is you live to be 112 years old. I just don't know how they do it. Tons of frozen gourmet foods, milk, cheese, Ben Jerry's Ice Cream, many varieties of Multi grain breads, Dozens of varieties of gourmet cookies, kitchen gadgets, household cleaners, candies, spices, gift books, .79 cent Hallmark cards, 2 for $1 Starbucks Iced Coffee, and tons of seasonal gifts and about 10,000 other dollar items.  I've been going here for 8 years now and saved tens of thousands over the years. YOU HAVE TO GO AT LEAST ONCE!!!!  If I knew you I'd even pay your Metrocard fare.

Even if you never go to these bargain/junk shops, you need to tour Jack's just once.

Jack's really truly is junk shopping at its best. I am probably being too harsh when I say that, because they don't just sell junk here, they sell EVERYTHING. You want hardware, this is you place. You want groceries, they've got those too. Clothing? Yup, you bet. The list goes on and on.

My best estimate is that the place is about 50% junk and 50% stuff that you might actually need, but the stuff is all super cheap, so it can be well worth you time to sift through the bad to find some gems (although gems is probably exaggerating).

Here is my honest to god suggestion: If you just moved to Manhattan or live here and have never been to Jack's, you need to go at least once and check it out. This will not only open your eyes to Jack's wares, but this is prime people watching (bargian hunters are a bizarre breed). Then, next time you need a shower curtain or an electric toothbrush head or a picture frame, you know where you can get it.

Holy Toledo this place is LARGE. In search of some cheap supplies for an upcoming party, it dawned on me that Jack's was the way to go.  It's a bit overwhelming and it's not always exactly easy to find what you're looking for, but if/when you find it, you know it's gonna be CHEAP.

A few tips:

1. Jack's is not a clothing store. Stay away from that bin of t-shirts.  Yes, that means you.

2. Whether you go for the discount food is up to you. Frozen foods and peanuts are probably OK, but I'd stay away from meat and dairy.

3. The staff is useless, don't ask them anything.

I'd love to end this review by saying I found exactly what I was looking for, but sadly that was not the case.  We found some of what we needed, and it actually turned out we didn't need the thing we thought we needed at the event (did that make any sense?).  But a full set of party supplies for less than $20 is great in my book.  Good for what it is, but don't expect it to change your life.

I get ALL my household supplies here. Yep, when it comes to household stuff, I'm no snob and would rather go for store brands than name brands. Some of my great finds have been:
- Store brand "Swiffer"-like wet towels
- Store brand "Swiffer"-like cloths
- Store brand "Clorox"-like disposable toilet-bowl scrubbers (pack of 8 plus the actual wand)
- Liquid softeners (I no longer use fabric sheets as I do my laundry in my tiny washer at home)
- Store brand "Ziploc"-like bags
- Kitchen scissors, can opener
- Many many other surprising finds

YES each of this for $1.07 (99-cent with tax ;p)

walked around the store.  can find great deals at random times.  found yoga mat for $6 only.

Some sales are good, some are not even sales.  Elf cosmetics cost $1 originally so 99 cents here is like no deal.

got baking measuring cups for 99 cents.  great deal and no find anywhere.

lots to shop but be aware of your prices before splurging your paycheck

I came here looking for ornaments, thinking I could get some cute, cheap balls in a box for the holidays.

I just wasn't expecting them to be so cheap.

There's a wall to the left as you enter the store stacked in red and green with bags of balled ornaments. Some of them are fairly plain, just different colors, others have a simple design on them...all of them are very very cheap. There wasn't one bag that I was able to pick up that some tinsel had already peeled off a ball due to the Elmer's glue that kept it together just long enough to make it to the store.

I wasn't even given so much as a look either when I asked the sales girl if they carried any more than what was in front of me. She told me no, but I ventured anyway. Homegirl lied to get me off her back because lo and behold there were more ornaments upstairs. A little better in quality, and more of them could be found in a box rather than a bag. And if I weren't being so picky about finding something cute maybe I would have bought a box, but I didn't.

...not the best place to go Christmas decor shopping for...

As far as the rest of the store - it's big, it's crowded, narrow walkways and terribly lit in florescent blindness, but I do believe you can get some good deals here.

Jacks is THE place to find everything you never knew you needed!

For 99 cents, I've bought everything from candles to shoe insoles to pedicure kits to sunglasses to hair accessories and soft drinks at this odds-and-ends wonderworld.  They restock their bread daily, and their snacks section often stocks hard-to-find those insanely pungent Herrs Ketchup Chips that I occasionally crave.  They'll also have random gourmet foods here now and then.  Head upstairs, and you'll also find a smathering of larger items for over a dollar -- toys, Halloween costumes, gift wrap, lingerie, luggage, cookware....  I once found the exact coasters I was looking for by chance, and also a fake potted plant.  There are several locations, but the one on 32nd is KING.  Thankfully, Jacks on 32nd is on my way home and it's the perfect excuse to stop by often.

Jacks, I heart you.

This is quite possibly the largest 99 cent store I have ever seen.  Granted, only the first level is 99 cents, and the second and third floor levels consist of items that are at "low prices," but nonetheless, it's a great place to find everyday items for your apt/home!

It's also a good place to go to get disposable items such as plates, cups, etc. for parties.

I came here recently and heard them announce that effective Sept 1, 2008, they will be raising their prices slightly.  I wonder if this means $1+ will become the new 99 cents?

Don't tell anybody, but I kinda love Jack's. I used to be a Jack's addict, stopping in every time I was anywhere remotely near the store. I'm in recovery now though, and haven't stopped by in a while. But, I used to stock up on large amounts of their frozen foods and candy.

And bread, and occasionally various other food products. I know, I know ... but I went shopping while I was  hungry and it clouded my judgment. I will say this, the food may have seemed questionable, but it was A-OK. This was,of course, before I got more "into" food, so my standards were substantially lower. It wasn't gourmet, but it wasn't expired and I never felt weird or sick afterwards. And some of the stuff they have in there, you just can't find anywhere else. And chances are, once they go out of stock on something, they're not getting it again. So, what the hell? I tried the stuff, and some things were better than others.

There's a lot of crap in here, but some good cheap stuff too. You just have to have the patience to go threw it all.Oh yes, and I agree with Sam P. --- stay away from the clothes! I don't know why, but I always feel like they've been worn by at least 3 other people before it hits the bin.

Jack's is like a vortex where it sucks in a massive amount of cheap (yet useful) products and though the crowds make you want to spring out for dear life, you keep on coming back for more.
