These guys were really great. They had me try on different shoes and run on the treadmill. I found out the last pair of shoes I bought was actually the complete wrong pair for me, which is why I was having knee problems. They were friendly and helpful and did not try to push the more expensive shoes on me. Also, the first time you go you pay full price, but any time after that you get a 10% discount. I'd definitely recommend it, but like most places in Park Slope - watch out for the babies and strollers.
I heard that JackRabbit was THE place to go for running shoes. I took up running a couple of months ago in order to train to run the Komen breast cancer 5K this sept. I have a pair of running shoes I had bought online for running on the street but started running trails in the park and wanted something that could handle sticks, rocks and sometimes mud instead. also, they have a treadmill in the store so you can really try out the shoe you are buying and supposedly they will tell you if you are an overpronator or what kind of stability shoe you may need because of your gait while on the treadmill. IMAGINE my disappointment when I went in and they told me they don't carry any women's shoes under a size 7!! that's ridiculous. I'm a size 6. The salesgirl then even told me I don't really NEED a new pair of trail shoes and could just wear the shoes I already have on the trails. Um, the point was to get some trail shoes to avoid getting stabbed in the feet by sticks and to see if I was going to prefer one brand over another. Sigh. Bummer.

Jack Rabbit is my favorite local sports shop. The one catch that has caught me is that if you are a repeat customer, after the first $100 you spend, they give you a 10% discount on all purchases thereafter. Sweet.
The selection is not very extensive, but you can get a little of everything. The gear is pretty cool, but the shop is kind of pricey. The staff is very knowlegeable and friendly and to be honest, they look like they all work out too!!
Another wonderful thing about this store is that they have people there that can train you for cycling or running or even triathalons!! They are not located in this shop in Brooklyn, but rather the one in Manhattan. However, the Brooklyn folks can tell you who to ask for if you do need to link up with a trainer. Double sweet.

I've had hot and cold experiences with this store - sometimes the staff is really warm and welcoming and other times they cold.
I had a very enthusiastic staff person chide me loudly for running in the shoe I was running in. I took in stride because I bought the shoe from them in the first place and told him so. We both got a laugh out of that.
He put me in a shoe that I loved and helped me a great deal. On another occasion, I was coming off an injury and the staff person had me try on a variety of shoes and explained each shoe's technology.
So why only four stars? I've dropped in dozens of times and on those visits the staff looked at me like I had three heads - almost like I was disrupting their day.
JackRabbit has a decent selection of sneakers and they don't carry Nike shoes, all pluses in my book, but a number of the staff don't sound like dedicated runners. That said some of those non-runner types still possessed an extensive knowledge of various brand quirks. They will let you spend a lot of time trying your shoes out on the treadmill and filming it to check your gait. They don't pressure you to buy although I did feel pressured into buying a 1/2 size larger than the shoes I usually run in and that didn't really work out for me...
I think triatheletes may be more their thing, they do have interesting sounding classes but they are also on the pricey side.
