Some of the best BBQ I've ever had, hands down. You can get it as hot as you want (even hotter than what's on the menu, just ask) and with pretty much any flavor you want. The menu isn't very large but what they have is amazing.
The dining room feels like a hole in the wall and there are probably less than a dozen tables so it fills up pretty quick at lunch. They're pretty on top of the refills, too, and you'll need it if you go for the hot stuff.
Awesome place. I couldn't have hoped for a better barbecue experience.
We were staying down the street at one of the many, random DTC hotels and I found this place on Yelp. I love my barbecue, but am so often disappointed, so I wanted to find out what Denver had to offer me.
This was one of the warmest and most enthusiastic greetings at a restaurant I think I've ever received. The owner came out, offered us a table, and then brought out the sauce sampler in a half ice cube tray.
We went through them for a few minutes, really grilling each one. And, wow, there are some really, really different flavors going on. Pretty much something for everyone: fruity, tomatoey, spicy, sweet, etc. I ended up liking the mustard sauce the best, and ordered a brisket sandwich to put underneath it.
After we had chosen our sauce, the friendly owner handed the table service over to a server. The place was fairly busy, so I can imagine he's working hard enough greeting people and cooking at the same time.
The food took a bit of time but, wow, it was worth it. The sauce was great, and on top of that brisket, it was even better. But the bread is what really made the sandwich. In Texas style BBQ, you often just get a cheap bun or slices of white bread to put your sandwich on. There are some people though who understand how important the bread can be to a BBQ sandwich, and this is obviously one of those places. It was sweet, wonderfully textured, and left me wanting another round, even though I was pretty full.
The sauce I had was fairly similar to (if you've ever been fortunate enough to have it) Salt Lick's: mustardy, but with a lot of other stuff going on.
We ended up with a dessert though. I can't pass up interesting-looking desserts. I don't remember the name of it (the web site doesn't appear to be working), but it was a really nice treat, although definitely shouldn't be placed anywhere near a diabetic.
I come up to Denver at least once per year, and plan to make this place a regular stop. You should too.
Ok, being the BBQ snob that I am, I just had to comment on this place. I remember when he was selling BBQ in a church parking lot with the ole skool smoker (oil barrel, cut in half to make a door and modified to smoke). His food was good then and I think it's better now.
Pros: Great food, tender meat, tons of choices on BBQ sauce and the spice level as well. The owner is also the head chef and likes his stuff done a certain way. The owner is also very kind and willing to talk to his customers, especially the new ones.
Cons: I am going to complain about parking because I typically go during lunch and that spot can be a pain in the arse! I am also going to complain about the seating, because there isn't much in the way of in-house dining. Not saying there isn't any, but it's just small...
Hope: My hope is that Yelp can give this guy a huge boost in his clientele as to force him to go to a larger space!!!
Thank you Yelp!
This was freaking awesome. I had chopped chicken and chopped beef with traditional sauce habanero heat and mango with jalapeño heat. Sides were sweet potato fries and slaw. Freaking awesome. I didn't leave anything on my plate. Also top notch were these scones with honey butter spread. Coworkers and I were being dropped off at hotel, hot on yelp for nearby guided us here. Sweetness.
I almost did myself the disservice of not coming here during my stay in Denver. This is undoubtedly the best BBQ restaurant I've ever eaten at.
I walked in with my dad to a small wait because the entire restaurant was full around 12:30, but we didn't have to wait long before two people sitting at the "bar" cleared out. As soon as we sat down, Jabo introduced himself and explained a bit about his philosophy on BBQ -- mainly that if you don't get the sauce you like, you won't have a good meal. With that, he justified his array of over 20 sauces.
Because we were first-timers, Jabo gave us a complementary sauce sample with six sauces -- classic Carolina BBQ, regular BBQ, cherry, mango, peach, and apple -- all of which were impeccable. Although the mild sauces are provided in the sampler, you can get heat added to them from mild through habanero.
I went with the pulled pork sandwich with habanero peach sauce. I like spicy foods, and let me tell you, when Jabo says he can make it as hot as you want it, he means it. Only slow, slow cooking can make the soft texture and smoky flavor of the pork in this sandwich. On top of that, it's served with some slaw on top (which helps to neutralize some of the heat from the habaneros) on a gigantic fresh bun. This was among the best sandwiches I've ever eaten, let alone BBQ.
The sweet potato fries we ordered on the side were equally delicious, but the portion was a bit small. Still, I would recommend getting them just for the taste.
This is a very long-standing institution which lasted a full seven years as a cart and catering business in DTC. At its permanent location, you owe it to yourself to give it a try while you're in Denver.
Try the Jabo dog, It's a very large and 1 is enough to share. Sauces are very unique and I appreciate the variety. Great for lunch. Never usually busy which I find hard to believe at times. Great smokey flavor and tender meats which is the most important aspect of BBQ.
Wow, this place is fantastic. If you are in the area, you should definitely give it a try.
It's located in a strip mall and is not much to look at (from the outside or the inside...). But ignore all of that.
The menu is pretty standard barbeque. Brisket, pulled pork, chicken and ribs with an assortment of sides (slaw, baked beans, fries, etc...). If you are a first timer, they will be bring you out a sampler of their sauces. There are 6 flavors (regular, mango, apricot, cherry, mustard, and the flavor of the month, which was maple when I was there) in different levels of spiciness (mild, regular, hot, jalapeno, and habanero). You choose your meat and then what sauce you want it drenched in (they are extremely generous with the sauce).
I went for the pulled pork sandwich (with mustard jalapeno sauce) and got sweet potato fries, baked beans, and a Utah scone. The sandwich was very good and ginourmous. The meat was extremet juicy and tender and was slathered in the sauce. The bun that it was served on did a good job of keeping the sandwich relatively clean, considering how much sauce there was. The sweet potato fries were crispy at the ends and soft in the middle and were a great combination of salty and sweet. The baked beans were on the sweet side, to the point where I was unable to finish them. If you like super sweet baked beans, then you might like these, otherwise, I would suggest taking a pass. The Utah Scone is the must have though. I don't know what a Utah Scone is supposed to be, but this was basically some fried dough (think donut but without the hole) served with some HONEY butter (emphasis on the HONEY). It is gloriously sweet and delicious.
Service was friendly and attentive, even though there only seemed to be one guy working the joint. He took his time explaining the different sauces and seemed quite knowledgeable with any questions we had.
I will definitely be back!
A trip to Denver without a Jabo's visit is missing something for me. I haven't spent considerable time in any famed BBQ regions, but accounting for the Rocky Mountains and the East Coast, I haven't had 'cue as satisfying and consistent as Jabo's at any restaurant. I've lost count of the times I've been here, which should speak to the joint's quality.
First, some justification for what may sound like hyperbolic BBQ love: I was turned on to this place by a serious BBQ lover, who learnt of Jabo's from some old-school Jabo's cart-lovers. Know that my Jabo's love is grounded in history and the deepest respect for the tradition.
BBQ deepness aside, this is the most solid 'cue I've encountered in Denver.
If you're a first-timer, or even if you're a veteran Jabo-fiend, I strongly recommend the sauce tasting. More so than the kitschiest of novelty restaurants, Jabo's is both fun and interactive. Without a big show, you'll get a platter of sauce samplings from your server, accompanied with tiny Baskin Robbins-style sample spoons. Try all the sauces, pick a favorite and indicate your choice along with your spiciness preference, from mild to eight or so levels up to habanero. I go with the "hot," which is fairly raging and still below below both jalapeno and habanero in heat level. Some of the rotating choices include hickory mustard, mango, grape, apple, pear, classic and pineapple.
So you've got your sauces all figured out ... what about the meat? You truly can't go wrong. My favorite is the Carolina sandwich - pork and coleslaw with hot mango or mustard sauce on a bun - but I can honestly say it's all good. Pick your favorite meat, customize your sauce, and I don't doubt you'll be happy. If you're the adventurous sort, Jabo offers a fierce link offering with a massive sausage covered in pulled pork or brisket. It's a good call if you have The Hunger. I'm not sure if they're still available, but Jabo once had the best Buffalo wings I've ever had.
Look, if you like barbecue at all and you're in Denver, head south and hit up Jabo's. His meat mecca is well south in a strip mall, but I swear by the place, as do all the self-respecting cue-lovers I know. I was shown the place by connoisseurs, and hope every Denver-bound tender meat-lover at least pays a visit.
Oh! And for dessert, get a scone. You fail if you don't. I hate scones, and yet, Jabo's "scones" are one of my favorite desserts. They're basically donuts covered in honey butter. Please trust me -- you need to try Jabo's scones.
My friend recommended Jabo's with the promise that it would be "the best barbeque (you've) ever had". Well, it didn't quite live up to that promise, but it was, indeed, a VERY tasty meal.
We went for lunch, and my first impression was it looked like the place had just opened for business. The decor was sparce, and the red vinyl booths were cheesy- not what I'd expect from a BBQ joint. It looked 'unfinished'.
The menu left me salivating, and unsure what to order (although I ultimately decided on the chopped beef brisket sandwich). At my friend's advice, I decided to order a scone and sweet potato fries as my sides.
When we ordered, the server said we had to choose a sauce. Flustered, we all made our choices too quickly. I picked Habenero, and though the server warned me that it was 'extremely hot', my overly confident taste buds said that would be okay (I have a high tolerance for spice).
My sandwich was clearly delicious and tender, and while I could somewhat stand the heat of the Habenero sauce, it was SO SPICY it made the sandwich unenjoyable to eat. I should've picked a different sauce (perhaps 'hot' would have sufficed).
The scones, which I was suspicious about, were delectable. They tasted more like doughnuts, covered in butter and icing.
I'd like to go back. The ribs look tempting, and I'd revisit the brisket with a different sauce.
Despite it's awkward strip-mall location near Vitamin Cottage and Nail Salons, the food is GOOD. With the less-than-stellar atmosphere, next time I'd probably take my BBQ to go.
After hearing my husband rave about Jabo's for months, we finally went one Saturday afternoon so I could see what all the fuss is about. Jabo's is sit in a strip mall off Arapahoe and has a little sign that you could miss if you didn't know where you were going. The space is small and has a few nicely sized booths off to the side. When we went it was nice and quiet, but I hear it is crazy busy during the week at lunch. The waiter took the time to explain the large selection in sauces and answered my questions on heat levels and so on. I had the sliced beef, beer battered fries and some of the "utah" scones. Hands down it was the best BBQ I have ever had! The meat is smoky and falls apart. I had the jalepeno sauce and it was HOT, but flavorful and really added to the taste of the meat. It was a slow burn that built as I ate. The fries were fresh and crisp with the batter, but my favorite thing had to be the scones. OMG! They are warm puffy like pastries that are slathered in butter and honey that combine into an icing on top. They absolutely just melt in your mouth. I think I could have had 10 of them! It is truly a great food experience. If you love good bbq, then Jabo's is the place to be!
If the Greek Gods decided to have BBQ instead of Ambrosia, they would have Jabo's.
Aphrodite, you would have the pulled pork, with Hot Cranberry Sauce. Your meat so luscious and wonderful, your sauce sweet and hot, like the goddess of love, lust, beauty, and sexual reproduction. You temptress you.
Athena, you would have to be the brisket with medium apple flavoring, showing your shrewd companionship to heroes.
Prometheus, you lover of man. You loved man so much you gave us fire, stolen from Zeus, and therefore you must be the chicken with habenero sauce. Due to your love of man you must be punished with the pain, but it hurts so good, much better than being strung up and having your eyes pecked out. .
Cupid, you god of erotic love and beauty. You must love the Utah Scones that seem to make no sense until you have one and experience what true joy is.
And Zeus, how can we forget about you! You must be the Jabo link. The best hot link you have ever had. How can this be topped? How about with a half pound of your meat of choice (pulled pork), with your sauce of choice (hot mustard). This is truly the best that life can provide.
Jabo, your restaurant is truly the Acropolis amongst hills. And I should mention, Jabo caters my company picnic every year, which I had on Saturday.
Blessed be.
I'm giving this place 5 stars completely based on the fact that they used to be a wheel-cart in a church parking lot and got so much business that they "had" to get a physical location to avoid violating city ordinance for bathrooms.
That aside, it's a great BBQ joint! It's in a strip mall and is very small, but the owner is a very personable and nice man who will chat you up like crazy. And he knows BBQ. He makes many different sauces that very in spicy-hotness and flavor. On the flavor side, they offer original, mustard, apple, tangerine, and many many more. And on the hotness scale, he offers mild, medium, hot, jalapeno, and habenero. I love hot food and will testify to the hotness of the habenero. I usually have apple - habenero.
Once you pick your sauce, you can decide what to put it on,. I always recommend pulled pork. The brisket is great as well, but pork is the way to go.
The sweet tea is too sweet most of the time and the sides are very good. You can get sweet potato fries, fried okra, and all of the usuals. And they all taste the way they should.
if you want to enjoy a very filling and sleep-inducing lunch, go there around 1 pm and then plan on sleeping at your desk or on a couch for the next 4 hours.
I never liked barbecue until I went to Jabo's. I also hate coleslaw, except for Jabo's homemade slaw.
Make sure if it's your first time there, let them know and if Jabo is available, he'll come out and give you his spiel on the history of the sauces and how he can customize it to your level of hotness. Also, not many people know that he'll combine sauce flavors and even do an in-between hotness level if you request it. Mango is most popular, with good reason, but I really suggest sometime trying the mustard-mango combination... it is really good.
My favorites there are the Caronlina (pulled pork sandwich with a scoop of coleslaw on top of the meat) and the ribs. You can taste the wood-smoked cooking, and the meat is not dry at all. Also, you MUST have the scones. The honey butter on them is sooo amazing. The beer battered fries are also perfect... cripsy on the outside, yummy yummy on the inside.
Hands-down one of my favorite places to eat. I'm only sad that I just moved to the north side of Denver and won't be able to have Jabos as often. Last time I was there, Jabo told me that they are moving their location to another smaller unit down by 3 Margaritas (across from Target at I-25 and Arapahoe) so don't panic if you go and find the place empty! Since the economy went down the crapper, Jabo said their business went down by 60%. Show them some love so they stay in business!!!
Oh, and to the person who said they wish it was cheaper.... well don't we all wish EVERYTHING was cheaper? But seriously, the prices are right on (even with the small increase about a year ago). You are paying for quality food and that good meat ain't cheap. I bet if it seemed like a fancy restaurant inside, no one would think twice. But I think $17.50 for 2 HUGE ribs, 1/4 lb pulled pork, 2 scones, and 2 sides is well worth the price. I'm able to get two meals out of that, and I'm not a small eater.
To sum it up, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, even if you are not a big barbecue fan. I wasn't either, but now I'm hooked!
Sticky fingers, sweaty foreheads and faces glazed over in sheer joy and fulfillment. Jabo's does this to me every time. This is the only place I go to that offers a meat on meat sandwich. And you choose the meat! Sausage, Hot Link, Pulled Pork, Chicken, Beef Brisket. God, I get full just thinking about all the options.
Not being from the south, I have never really sampled true BBQ food, but having eaten in several BBQ joints around town, I can say that this is some of the best BBQ in Denver.
The restaurant is unassuming and tucked into a strip mall in the DTC area, but the food is exceptional and the fact that you can mix and match your hot sauces any way you want makes it even better.
The owner, Jabo, is a tall black man who is always in sweatpants and an apron everytime I go. He is the friendliest cook/owner I have ever met. He greats the men with a hearty handshake or backplap and the women with a light touch on their shoulder. He instantly makes anyone feel welcome.
I cannot think of one reason that someone should not eat at this restaurant. Unless you hate leftovers. If you hate leftovers, you probably shouldn't eat here. The portions are big and the food is filling, so you will almost certainly be taking some of your meal home.
I'm from the south and eating at Jabo's sort of reminds me of going to my friendly neighbor's house (that could cook a mean BBQ) for lunch.
The people there are so friendly and I'm guessing it's because they did indeed start the business as a wheel cart which tends to encourage more interaction and friendliness between the buyer and seller of the food. The thing was, the food was so good they had to move into the bigger place, but they kept that friendliness in the new environment.
Jabo's has lots of sauces (around 6 I think) that are made of interesting things like apple or mango as well as traditional BBQ sauce. And you can get any of these in various levels of spicy.
As for what you get with your BBQ - they have great mac 'n cheese. The cook told us it was homemade with a blend of cheese, which was way fancier than anything I was expecting. You can get lots of other sides too including sweet potato fries. I think I may have already mentioned my fondness for the sweet potato?
This is by far one of my favorite places to have lunch in the Tech Center. And last time I was there they were selling the old cart if you're looking to start a new business.
The food is really good, can't say I've bought better BBQ, I just wish it was a little cheaper. I had the beef and ribs with coleslaw and fries. The coleslaw was very good, and an important component to a good BBQ meal if you ask me. Most unique part is the large variety of sauces they have. I was honored to meet Jabo the night I went in and he was a greater person to speak with. I will definitely go again.
Jabo's....How do I love thee, let me count the ways. Several co-workers and I have frequented the location in Greenwood Village every Friday for the past several months. First and foremost, let me say that Jabo himself is a fine man that will always chat you up. Unfortunately, he often repeats the same story about the open pit out back and the 300 or 3000 pounds of pork he's got smoking at any given time. When you mention that you are from NC he'll tell you how they do the BBQ in NC, as if you've never had it before. He'll remind you each and every visit that if your bill is over a certain amount and you pay with cash you'll get a 5% discount--something about credit card fees. Humor him; he's a good guy and he means well. Plus he can throw down with some serious BBQ.
Speaking of which, the BBQ here is not fantastic but it is great and more than worth the trip. Try the Carolina sometime (pulled pork with coleslaw). I'm not a big fan of coleslaw myself, but it is creamy and quite delicious with the hickory mustard sauce. The bun is a bit too big, but who cares, it's still stuffed with BBQ that will fall all out on your plate.
Be warned: You are going to make a complete mess of yourself and your face. Get a couple of extra napkins from the amicable regular waiter, David, and go with the flow.
The Jabo Link and Jabo Dog (1/3lb hot link or dog with 1/3lb of pulled pork on top) as well as the ribs are all excellent choices. Try the beer battered or sweet potato fries for sides. However, sides are not recommended with the Jabo Link or dog if you're on a business lunch or have anything important to do for the rest of the day, as you will most likely be unable to move after eating all of that food. Speaking of sides, the ones they have are good, but they could certainly use a few more. Jabo will tell you something about food cost when you mention mac n' cheese but that and maybe homemade mashed potatoes or fried okra would be great. I've heard from people that they used to have the best mac n' cheese here, but they don't have it anymore. Maybe once the economy picks up, they'll put it back on the menu.
A scone for dessert is a MUST. I don't think it's technically a scone, but who cares?? It's hella good and dripping with, "sweet, buttery goodness" as Hannah H said in her review. If you leave here without one you've made a major mistake! I'm reminded every Friday by Jabo or his companion that they sell the scone batter and honey butter here now in bulk for a cash-only price. As much as I am tempted, I'll stick to one a week for fear of going into convulsions.
There is one drawback here for serious BBQ lovers like myself. They are often out of sweet tea (a serious, serious crime that no self-respecting BBQ joint should ever be guilty of, even in Colorado). No matter, it's still a great meal for a great price. Depending on the day and time you might even catch a Denver Bronco or two getting their grub on after practice at the nearby training facility. Sit back, enjoy the Barry White playing over the speakers and prepare to stuff yourself silly!!

This place is really good. They redecorated not too long ago and I think they may have picked up the booths from an out-of-business strip club. They're tall, red vinyl booths that just put you in the mood to make love to something. But please don't do that in the restaurant.
The big thing with their sauces is you actually get to pick how hot you want it and what flavor. My favorite is the mustard habanero. Jalapeno Mango is also very popular. All the sandwiches are great depending on what barbecued farm animal you're in the mood for. I usually get the baked beans but the sweet potato fries and the honey butter scones are also great. They also have some traditional southern collard greens that I've always wanted to try but haven't gotten around to yet.
They have a super-sweet southern-style iced tea that you might find a little too sweet, even for sweet tea.
Here you'll find the best scones with honey butter, it's kinda like a beignet smothered in sweet, buttery goodness. I thoroughly loved their bbq and the many sauces you can pick from but it's the scones that became legendary in my book.
I visit this place every time I am in town and I always get my meal to go. Back at the hotel I can eat the ribs in privacy, with both hands, feverishly dipping, with my face and arms covered in spicy bar-b-que sauce...the way ribs are intended to be eaten. I can't resist a side of hot links and I like these with a spicy mustard sauce. The scones are like crack and since I am in my hotel I feel no shame as I devour the entire sweet treat in a few gigantic bites. ;) Afterwards I can have a shower, an advantage that the restaurant simply can't offer me.
This is one of the better bbq places I've been to in Denver. I've been to the chain restaurants, like Brother's BBQ and Bennett's, but they just don't compare to Jabo's. Jabo's used to be out in a church parking lot in Englewood with with bbq pit in tow with his tables and everything. He would start cooking early and the line would follow. There's no way you could find this place unless someone told you about it. But now he's got a steady location.
If you're looking for bbq in Denver, you have to come here. Jabo is the nicest guy. He aims to please. He'll go through his whole explanation of his bbq and his sauces and will let you try all of his sauces before you order. Then you can make your own concoction out of the various sauces he has. If you like your bbq dry you might not like Jabo's. But if you're a sauce person like me, bring on the bbq sauce. He's got a lot to choose from.
The meat is so tender and it's got that nice smoked flavor. But then when you throw on the sauce. You're in hog heaven. The prices are good too.
Jabo's is by far the best bbq I've had in Denver. Ever other place we go, we compare to Jabo's, and so far Jabo's has won every time. Their meats are the best! I usually order the chicken sandwich. The chicken is white and dark meat, but is always fabulous. I've also tried the pulled pork, beef brisket, fried chicken, jabo's link, and jabo's dog, and they are are fabulous! If you have never been here before, they will give you sample of the sauce flavors they have, in mild. Then you can order whichever sauce you want however hot you want it. The jalapeno is HOT, in my opinion. And, the scones are a MUST! They are covered in honey butter and are heavenly!
Want to see something amazing? Watch someone eat 3 of Jabo's scones in one sitting ... in addition to their lunch BBQ and sides. It's a sight to behold. This guy is appropriately nicknamed "Gigantor". I once asked our waitress how many scones she'd eaten since she'd been working there ... she responded with some ridiculously low number ... like 2. Two?! Seriously, if that's true then Gigantor ate more in one sitting than she did in how ever many years she'd been working there. She must have some powerful willpower to resist. These scones are slathered in honey and butter and as I ate the last bite of mine I imagined it simultaneously triggering a sugar-induced coma along with adult onset diabetes. I once ate lunch here 3 days in a row. By the 3rd day I figured I'd better try and eat something smaller so I ordered a BBQ pork sandwich with cole slaw on it. The size of the sandwich rivaled the ones that Shaggy & Scooby-Doo used to make. Unfortunately, I didn't have any string to tie it down and make it easier to fit in my mouth. Their sweet tea is very sweet ... if you think it's too sweet one or both of the following is going on:
1) you're not a true southerner
2) they're at the bottom of the batch where all the sugar has collected
Back to the BBQ, it's really good. I've tried the pulled pork, the ribs, and the beef and all were good. Their take on BBQ sauce is interesting. You get to pick a flavor and a spiciness. In addition to the normal flavors, they also offer rotating "fruit" specialty flavors such as apple, apricot, peach, grape, etc. I've got particular tastes when it comes to BBQ sauce so I always go with mustard flavored, medium spicy. As for side dishes, the sweet potato fries with sweet shake are highly recommended. And of course, get some scones.
I absolutely love the joint. It's small, clean, jovial, and owner Jabo Lawson is a bona fide bbq king, treating his legion of loyal patrons to royally smoked pork ribs, brisket, Polish hot links, and pork shoulder, all of which pair perfectly with the diabolically delicious sweet potato fries. Sweet and hot bbq sauces (60 combinations in all) stroke the meats, while the savory scones slathered with honey butter will literally inspire a trip all by itself. There is no way to leave without taking a boxful of these suckers home.
I remember when Jabo's used to be a truck and smoker parked in an open field. As high school students we would flock in droves to get a hunk of meat and one of innumerable sauces. I was a little dismayed to hear that this grimy and gritty operation decided to stuff its overflowing flavors into the confines of a restaurant. I have heard that the days when Jabo appears are good days, and the days where Jabo is absent, are bad days. This is confirmed by my one eating experience there when there was no Jabo to be found. I had a huge sausage link dog of some kind and my Dad had the ribs, both of which we found underwhelming, especially with all the hype that had been built around the smoke-truck rig. The tradition of serving a bajillion sauces for whatever your palate might need continues, though, and for that I am thankful. I'll give it another go someday to see if I can find the legendary carnivorous spirit of Jabo, but until then, a lukewarm 2-stars.
