3.5 stars! They get minus 1.5 for location because honestly, a girl can't walk in heels from the T all the way to this place comfortably.
My friend and I have birthdays quite close to each other and we decided on this place to celebrate. It is a nice open space and they even had a DJ later in the night. It was nice because our friends filled up a good portion of the bar but there were still other people there. We talked, we laughed, we danced, we drank - I had a great time! It did a get a bit loud by the end of the night but that could have been my hearing going downhill as my BAC went uphill.
Fun place but I just wish it was a bit more accessible by public transportation!
I HAVE ENTERED THE LAND OF THE CORPORATE HAPPY HOUR!
-ESPN on all the T.V.'s?
-Petite, straight-haired-with-flyaways waitresses dressed either in tight black track suits or mini-dresses with sneakers?
-A sore throat after the fact from screaming anecdotes ever so loudly at my next door compatriots?
-Delicious-looking yet somewhat under-seasoned spinach and artichoke dip?
-Dudes in front of me behind me across from me all over me sporting identical striped button-down shirts and cropped button-down haircuts?
-Mahogany?!
CAN A GET A YES, YES, YES?!!
Yes.
I like their flat screens. The service was pretty good (which is why they get one extra star). The food's pretty good too, I had the chicken tenders which was a tad underdone but good all the same. Typical financial district bar. Nothing special!
I was forced to go to JA Stats against my will, so obviously, take the review with a grain of salt.
I don't normally like places like JA Stats, which have loud pounding music and are so crowded you can barely move. But if you're looking for the meat-market type place, this might be right for you.
A friend who works in the area said it's quite nice for lunch, but at night, they clear out the tables and they pack the place full of people. There's no room to move around and it's incredibly crowded -- not to mention overpriced drinks and shots.
I'd go back to JA Stats for lunch to possibly check it out, but I wouldn't go back there on a Friday or Saturday night. Some people might like the scene, but it's just not for me. Very crowded, rope out front with a line and just a very awful experience. I always like something more low-key, but if you like crowded, cramped places with thumping music and expensive drinks -- feel free.
Good DJ, Good Bartenders, Good Crowd. I'll be going back this weekend for sure. I'll try the food this time and let you know.
I hit up J.A. Stats a couple times over the past week after work and both times came out with a positive vibe. The service was just as attentive on a quiet President's Day evening as it was on a busy Friday night..
Drink prices were right for the area and there are appetizer specials from 5 till 7. I tried the chicken tenders which were great...the quesadillas looked good too. I'll definitely be back.
I loved Tiernan's. LOVED that place. Nostalgic memories of snowy nights and being all cozy inside, ... so sad when it closed.
However, the other night in the snowstorm, I checked out J.A. Stats. It was jampacked but I think there was some BC Alum event. I was happy to see they left the ambiance and set-up pretty much the same.
I was even happier they had Guiness, Blueberry Ale and a Hef on tap. Then we ordered food. The spinach and artichoke dip was great, and the chips that come with it are to die for. I had THE grilled cheese with fries on the side. You can't really mess up a grilled cheese, but it wasn't the best I've had. But the fries. Oh my, were they delectable.
Snowy night, cozy inside and warming up with fries and beer... just like old times!
We'll definitely be back.
UPDATE: Great hearty wraps and other power lunch fare for you professional, shirt-wearing crowd! Crispy fries are awesome.
ooooh so full from lunch at JA Stats. You know how your posture changes when you get back to your desk after enjoying a gigantic meal? Well that's me right now. I'm slouched in a very content but don't touch my stomach sort of way. It was that fulfilling. I had the large and greasy chicken pesto panini. So yummy I ate the whole thing without planning to. I didn't have much room left for fries, but they were nice and crispy. I arrived at noon, which was good because the seats filled up and a wait developed a little after 12:30. It's not a very cheap lunch, but the food is satisfying and I love the atmosphere of this place. My four star rating holds strong!

I thought J. A. Stats was a strange name for a bar; it just doesn't roll off your tongue that easily. So I looked them up and found out that the owners are named Jim and Andrew, and their last name begins with "Stat" (brothers perhaps?).
I hear this place reopened a couple weeks ago. I only went for beers after work on a Thursday, but it has potential. At least it's nice to have another slightly upscale restaurant/bar option in the Financial District.
Pretty quiet at 5:30, but really started hopping around 7. Mostly a young 20-something professional crowd I would say. The beer was cold and quick and the staff, friendly. I like that most of the seating consists of stools and high tables.
I had a four star experience the first time... I'll have to add Stats to the rotation.
JA Stats has a slightly frat-boy-in-a-tie client base, which isn't an issue until you fill the place (i.e. March Madness) and it gets extremely loud. The few bartenders and waitresses that I remember from my past times there were all gone, apparently replaced with inept college girls with no experence.
Went here recently for lunch and drinks and was VERY disappointed. This was not my first bad time here but this warrants the low score.
I asked for a steak and cheese with peppers and onions NO mushrooms. The waitress ran off and put the order in only to come back with a steak and cheese with peppers and onions and apparently EXTRA mushrooms. When I pointed out her mistake, her immediate reply was "There ARE NO mushrooms, thats an ONION... oh... wait...". OK, everyone can make a mistake, maybe the kitchen mixed it up and my sandwich is on its way. No such luck, they had cooked mushrooms into the sandwich and were now "making me a new one". When the "new one" comes out, yup totally the first sandwich with the mushrooms taken out. I pulled the sandwich apart and there are mushrooms all through the mix, I point her mistake out AGAIN and AGAIN I get a snappy response that she had "checked it".
Her manager came over and apologized and said he would "take it off the bill", I then insisted that he also take the two beers I had drank while waiting "off the bill" since he should be glad I had my EpiPen with me.
I packed my things and as I was leaving she spilled a beer on the guy that had been sitting next to me, I think he probabily got out of paying a bill that day too...
Needless to say I will NEVER return here, not even to use their sub-par bathrooms or watch the excellent but silent TV's all showing ESPN.
This is a bar. Plain and simple. Few flat screens, loud ass music, beer, mixed drinks, etc. All it has going for it is that compared to other financial district/faneuil hall nightspots, they have no cover and and the crowd is not bridge and tunnel drunken orgy.
I went here on a Tuesday night, therefore I don't think that makes my opinion anymore viable than someone who has never been. But, nevertheless...I liked this bar. It was the 3rd bar we went to on an impromptu Tuesday night bar crawl. We got a few beers and nachos. The nachos were good, the beers were beers.
The service was good, they have a few plasma screens, which is pretty standard. I'll have to check this place out on a different night...until then.
yes. this is a bar. in the financial distict. sooo after hours drinks with the office boys......and thats all. Food is merely okay. crowd is your own clique. as for meeting people, don't expect the ho train to ride through any time soon.
good bar service. food ok. but mutual funds talk spectacular!
We ended up here for drinks before dinner at Umbria. It still has the same set up that was once Tiernan's, but it has a nice, clean, newly varnished look to it. We sat at the bar and enjoyed good service, good drinks, and a decent wine list. The bar food looks good too. Crowd was very friendly, lots of TV for sports viewing. Definitely a good after work scene that doesn't break the bank.
This is a great place to catch a game or meet up for a drink. The staff is great, especially Courtney, who is a lot of fun behind the bar.
The food is basic pub food done well, except for the buffalo wings, which are always undercooked. The sliders are fantastic and the nachos are very good.
I have found the owners to be really nice guys and super accomodating. As for the guy below who brought 63 people to the bar, he clearly sucks, as do all of the lame ass hicks who came from New Hampshire. As someone who works in the restauarant business in Boston, we hate dealing with people from NH and Maine. They are bad tippers and worse drunks.
Went here this past Thursday night for a little after work relaxation and were very pleased with this place. The place was packed with a boisterous crowd unwinding after a long day of work. The pinot noir was great! We had the artichoke dip which was one of the best I've ever had and the steak tip dinner which was scrumptious! They have mostly American food on the menu but manage to serve grape leaves and spanakopita (I believe the owners are greek) I am so glad we stumbled upon this place!
Please don't take John G's review to heart without experiencing JA's first, rumor has it that he is not representative of his party that was at the bar and I'm sure he was also upset about the pummeling that the Noles took that day against their rival Gators.
I've been granted free appetizers as a "special request", by the way, and I have a hunch that perhaps I'm not the only fortunate one who brings in a large group to the bar.
I had a GREAT time at J.A. Stats this past weekend! The staff and crowd was great! It was absolutely packed in there and there was no cover all night! It's not easy to find that anywhere in the city. I look forward to going there with my girls again :)
I was in here the other night after work with a friend. The place looks good after a remodel from its days as Tiernan's. The trip worked out well as they had half price appetizers. I had a big helping on boneless buffalo wings that had some kick and sliders that were okay. Service was very friendly and multiple people were checking in on us the whole time. All in all a solid place to grab drinks after work.
