Review from Laura J.
I was taken aback by how many cars were in the parking lot on a Wednesday night. Slammin Jammin.
I was told this place had awesome "dirt" wings. The largest problem I face with wings is although I love the crunchy crispiness when well cooked, the grease always make me feel not so hot after the fact:( So I was leary of trying wings that have been double fried. But to my surprise, these wings were absolutely NOT greasy at all! They were great, tasty and not greasy, just juicy but still crisp.
In addition, I would say the rest of the menu definitely reflects tavern style dining...steaks, soups, salads, hearty sandwiches, and a nice
beer and wine list.
I live about 30 mins from J.Tim's but I'll be making the trip again....and soon! -

What happened to J. Timothy's?
I used to love to bring the family here. I would have the wings, and the rest of the crew could pick from a pretty extensive and reasonably priced menu.
Not so much on my most recent trip.
To start off, the bread, which is usually a reason to stop in all on its own, was horrible. The butter had way too much (cheap) honey, and the bread was cold and stale.
The wings were good as usual, but the celery was opaque in color, slimy, rubbery and inedible. I do have to say though, the addition of a 6-wing choice to the menu (along side the "single", "double" and "bucket) choices) was welcomed. I don't know what it takes to get celery to be that color, plus chewy , plus bendy, but my guess is that the process takes more than a week to complete.
This time in I ordered an entree salad. The salad (if you can call it that) I ordered was the blackened salmon. For $13.95 I got 2-3 oz of salmon over a bed of browned avacado, shaved onion, and baby greens that were sitting in a pool of water at the bottom of the bowl. The salad dressing was pretty good, but so thin that when I poured it over the "salad" it just dripped off the vegetables and down to the pool below. Not sure what the water at the bottom was, but I can guess that it was the water used to clean the baby greens, so most likely dirty lettuce drippings.
I used to come here all the time, and always loved it. When I heard it went downhill over the last year I didn't believe it, but now I'm a believer. That plus the steady uptick in prices will keep me away for a while.
See you around, J-Tim's. Hopefully you get your act back together so I can once again enjoy your delicious and unique wings. -
Review from Sanh A.
J. Timothy's seems to be very popular. I don't really understand why. The food isn't all that great. I remember having scallops here awhile ago and was left with an "ok" feeling afterwards.
My most recent visit was for appetizers. We had steamers, wings and pulled pork sandwiches. Again the food wasn't all that great. I think the wings at Sliders is still better. I like my wings crispy and J. Tim's didn't deliver that for me. -

Best wings Ive tasted anywhere! If you are for a place with 30 flavors go somewhere else, but if you want really good wings in the classic sauces come here! You will not be disappointed. Make sure.you get the wings dirt style. Ive had other types of food here and have never been disappointment. Everything from the salad to the clam chowder to the burgers have been terrific!

Absolutely worth a visit! Even if the parking lot seems full stop in there are plenty of dining areas and there is an upstairs to the bar. Food is very good, the wings and fried burgers are my favorite! Great beer selection! Only complaint is their horrible onion rings, they are those disgustingly over-greasy shoestring type. Come on J Tim's give me a real ring!

I always enjoy a fairly standard meal at J Tims. They have some pretty good food served by some fairly attentive waitstaff. I have never hated an entree there and I have tried several, but their claim that they have the best wings in the area? Oversell. They are alright, don't get me wrong, but honestly they are just alright. They were pretty fatty and greasy without the crispiness that makes for a really satifying wing. I must say my favorite thing on the menu by far is the soft baked pretzel appetizer with hot cheesy dipping sauce. I probably would go to J Tims just for that alone, but you CAN get a pretty good burger and some crispy fish and chips there too. I'd say, overall, A-OK, but nothing that I crave in the middle of the night.

Mixed drinks were overpriced, watery and small. The chicken wings reeked of vinegar, causing me and my companion to gag as we tried to eat them. Nachos were topped with Velveeta: gloopy on the top and soggy underneath.
All this in a place so noisy that you have to shout at one another to be heard.
There's a "Don't Tread On Me" flag flying outside this place. Guess what? I won't be trodden on again! -

Whenever I'm in Southington, I try to make it over to J Timothy's if I'm hungry. Their wings are amazing. Make sure to order the dirty buffalo wings. They deep fry them with sauce add more sauce and then deep fry them again. They're by far the best place to get wings (on the bone) in the Greater Hartford area. I especially like the fact that they usually have Ten Penny on tap- this allows me to support my local brewery while enjoying the delicious taste of a Ten Penny beer. Order a bucket and share it with a friend. Don't spend too much on the entres- they're good- but not worth spending a lot on.

Whenever we have visitors come into town, this is usually one of the stops. I love the ambiance here, it's been around since George Washington became president, and you feel how old the building is from the minute you step in.
And we definitely don't stop here just for the history... the wings here are probably my favorite anywhere! That's coming from a BW3 junkie. Get it dirt style, which is when they sauce them, fry it, then sauce it again. Yeah the wings are more than other places, but the size and quality is incomparable. Since the wings are my favorite, I haven't tried anything else on the menu but during my multiple visits with multiple visitors i've never heard any complaints about their food.
Beer selection is great, i love the special beer blends they do as well. Give them a try. My personal favorite is the Irish Blue (Guinness and Bluepoint Blueberry). -

J-Timbo's...yum.
Thank you for making the most delicious Teriayki Dirty wings ever
Thank you for serving me wings that look like they've been hyped up on steroids.
Thank you for warming my belly with beer cheese soup
Thank you for being so historic...with your sexy dark wood and imtriguing history!
Thank you for having an upper floor that is open...so that I may spy on unsuspecting victims below.
Thank you for serving me delicious beer concoctions...a beer mixed with a beer..and all of a sudden it tasted like a chocolate covered cherry?!?! WHHAAAA!?
And thank you...to your lovely waitress..who blocked the camera for me...as I stashed that lovely beer mug into my purse.

By far the best wings you can get in the state of Connecticut. I go here at least twice a month and I never get tired of it. Do yourself a favor and get an order of Buffalo Dirt wings.
The chicken pot pie and shepeards pie are excelent as well as is the Philly Cheese steak.
The beer selection is excelent and the staff is very friendly.
I still can't figure out what's up with that 2-person table in the closet though. Why would anyone ever want to sit there? -
Review from Taryn M.
I do NOT understand the allure of this place at all. Yes, it's a historic building, and that gives it a great atmosphere. But the parking lot to this place is literally PACKED every single night of the week and I just. don't. get it.
The food is only okay. They're famed for these very average tasting wings? Again, I just can't understand it. Dirt style is nothing new, people... they've got them that way anyplace south of the Mason-Dixon line.
Happy hour is the only reason I'll go to this place. I don't know if the drinks are inexpensive, but it that's where people from my work go. I'll join them occasionally, if I have the patience to deal with the ridiculous parking lot situation on a Friday night. I mean, it really makes no sense at all. -

Southington, CT
Between special events, taking friends from out of town, or just going out to eat for the hell of it, I've been here too many times to count.
Some visits were better than others but no visit has ever let me down. The food is always fantastic. The menu is diverse enough for anyone to find something they like. Whether you order something "basic" or something a little on the pricier / fancier side, the preparation is equally excellent.
I do agree that the place can feel cramped, especially the waiting area. Also, while I've never had a bad experience with a waiter or waitress, I'd rank customer service at 4 out of 5 stars. Though courteous, on one or two occasions, I've waited a little longer for my food to arrive than I feel reasonable. Overall, I've encountered better, but not by much, and I've never had a reason to complain. I've always come away happy.
But let's be honest... at the end of any dining experience, it's the food that counts. Because of this, I give the restaurant a full five-star rating.
My recommendations: cheddar-ale soup, chicken wings, Shepard's pie. -

I really loved this place. Great choices of draft beer. The double dirty wings were HUGE and very well prepared. The atmosphere was very laid back and cozy!

$9 for an ounce of house wine, $9.50 for a 12 ounce draft, $14 for an average burger...get where I'm going with this. After the excitement of finding the last parking spot in the crowded lot, we got our name on the waiting list and went to the bar to wait for our table. Got the last 2 seats at the bar! Then it started with the bartender's "I can't be bothered with your questions" attitude. She was so rude, that you know she didn't need tips to support herself. Dirty wings were good, but everything else was average. The waitress we had when we got seated was friendlier. Don't let the crowded parking lot fool you.

Great beer selection! The bar staff is one of the most attentive so waiting for a drink on a busy night is very rare. The wait staff is good but some are slow and very impatient.
The food is great! Dirt style wings are the way to go but if you get the teriyaki they are very salty...but still good! The French onion soup is good (salty) but still good! Be sure to order the garlic break with the gorgonzola cheese dip!!! -

I'll vouch for the wings here as well. But almost everything else we had was fantastic, too - the steaks were a bit bland, but that was the worst of it. Our party of 12 ran the gamut of ordering what was on the menu. Best of all the service and prices were great!

I've only eaten here once or twice, and I've had the take out wings recently. The buffalo wings are pretty good. Flavor wise, I think they compete with Archie's, but I wasn't that fond of how they were cooked. The meat was a little tough, which is why I prefer my wings to be cooked to the point of being dry and almost crunchy. I do like the building, so that's a plus.

app: 'dirty style' buffalo wings - disappointing, fried to a crisp, and weak on the meat.
entree: lobster - nice presentation and quality lobster.
salad: average
service - okay, I was put in a very private nook and was isolated...not that I requested this at all. Maybe if i was on a date it would've been nice. -

When I relocated for a job, I ate here at least two nights a week for three months while staying in a hotel. The seasonal menu is always pretty tasty, although the fish is almost always overcooked. They then throw a sauce on top, which I always asked for on the side. The wings are tasty, albeit not that spicy, but the bartenders are great. Always took good care of me and a few regulars were staples as well. Overall, one of my top 3 places in Plainville.

Headed out here recently with a friend who lives in Plainville and as most have mentioned, GREAT WINGS!
We went with Bucket of Dirt Style Buffalo wings. I must commend them for the size of blue cheese side (monster).
The 40 wings were near $30. That's a little pricy, although they were good.
Service was good. It took a while to get served drinks, but after that, service was attentive. Quick on the refills for soda and beers. They appeared to have a good beer selection as well.
5 star wings + 4 star service + 3 star prices / 3=
4 stars. -

The ambience inside of this restaurant is really warm and inviting. For those who aren't familiar with J. Timothy's, the building was originally built during the colonial period, which makes for a nice quaint setting inside, with low ceilings, wood floors, and a large fireplace within one of the dining rooms. There is also comfortable seating above the bar.
The food is very good. I tried the "dirt wings" and I thought they were pretty impressive. I also would recommend the apple and blue cheese salad and the clam chowder. For drinks, have a look at their draft beers, there is an excellent selection to choose from. I'll definitely visit again when I'm in the area. -

My boyfriend took me to this restaurant because it is one of his favorite places to eat (he's a CT native -- I am visiting from California). We came during the dinner rush so we ended up waiting for about 20-25 minutes. The waiting area itself is really cramped and of course with all the different parties of people talking and laughing it was kind of hard to hear for our number while we waited to be called.
The restaurant does not bring out bread for you -- you have to ask. However there is no extra charge and the bread and honey butter is delicious and melts in your mouth! I ordered the Irish BLT and instead of flimsy pieces of bacon like you get when you order a BLT elsewhere there were thick, savory and soft pieces of bacon served with lettuce, tomato, mayo on warm toasted ciabatta bread and a large helping of fries.
The rest of the food is rather pricey, but those are for the steak and rib entrees. The burgers, sandwiches and wings are at a decent price. My meal came out to $9.25 but it was definitely worth it. Our service was very good, our waitress came by to check on us every so often and refilled our drinks promptly, despite the restaurant being very busy. -
Review from Kris V.
The only thing that could bump J.Tim's to 5 stars would be if anything other than the wings were worth the trip.
The service- eh
The Asian or Thai salad- pretty good but wayyyyy over dressed = soggy
The Wings- AWESOME!
We have been here a few times and the honey BBQ wings are pretty great. One day we were in the area and decided to stop by for lunch. It sucked. The pork sandwiches were sold out (and mysteriously the rest. was completely empty, minus us) then the roast beef sandwich was disgustingly dry. No sauce, dip, nothing! Sucked. Oh and the waitress was useless.
Just stick with the wings if your in the area. -

This place is really great all around. Nice atmosphere, good food, great wings, great beers, and doesn't feel like you are in Bristol at all! I relate this place to a Clyde's, which if you are from the Metro area, you know. A solid place to get some food.
The wings are nice and crispy. The food is pricey for the area, but worth it. It isn't expensive per say, but again, for the area it is on the higher end. I liked the BBQ Chicken Salad, nice and light with the dressing on the side. and did I mention the wings?? Haha. The whole menu looks delightful, I can't imagine you can miss here. -

When I come to Connecticut I have to come here because the boyfriend "LOVES" the dirt wings. They're pretty good as far as wings go. Calamari is interesting. I think they are trying to attempt Rhode Island style or perhaps their own style? Either way add more cherry peppers because that makes calamari off the chain yo! The gorgonzola fondue appetizer is too rich. I like blue cheese, but that dish makes me not like blue cheese.
Overall nice chill sports bar/restaurant and good service.
Note: Boyfriend wants me to add that the only thing he would ever order are the dirt wings and the beer blends are outstanding. He's never had better blends. He would rate 4.5 stars. -

Nothing says Super Bowl Sunday like buffalo chicken wings and a beer in my book. Never have I enjoyed a chicken wing as much as I did at J. Tim's. I knew it had to be good when my boyfriend and I pulled up to the tavern and saw a news truck in the parking lot.
When I walked in I was amidst the most well orchestrated takeout line I've ever seen. Being the responsible individuals that we are my boyfriend called a few days ahead to put in an order...according to our very friendly take out girl they had 800 orders for Saturday and even more for Sunday let me tell you these things are good! We got a large bucket filled with 36 delicious wings accompanied by carrot and celery sticks for 26 dollars...a steal in my book! Be sure to get the "Dirt Style" they're twice as tasty! For all you health conscious individuals they use trans fat free oil...another bonus. Can't wait to go back! -

First off...this place is just cool for the mere fact that the building began operating the same year that George Washington (yes, the Prez) took office (1789)! At the time it consisted of a bed chamber, a dining room and a winter kitchen but now there are multiple rooms for dining....and J. Timothy's took over in 1985...
Two words:
BUFFALO WINGS!!!!
Okay...plus another word:
DIRTY!!
So that brings us to:
DIRTY BUFFALO WINGS!!
Oh my....J. Tim's has seriously, the best....emphasis here, THE BEST, Buffalo Wings in the country. Who knew that a little town in Connecticut could boast such a thing? Not Buffalo, NY...Plainville, CT.
You can get their wings in a few sizes: The Mini ($5.95 for 6 wings), Single ($8.50), Double ($14.95) and the Bucket ($24.95) and they come in a few flaves: Original, Teriyaki, Honey Gold BBQ, General Tso's, and Herbed Parmesan. The key is to get the Original "Dirty" style which is sauced, fried, and sauced again....oh Lordy watch out.
A friend of mine told me that he came here with his in-laws who are actually FROM Buffalo and they said that hands down, J. Timothy's wings were the best they'd ever had...and I can attest. Give me J. Tim's wings and a pint or 12 of Magic Hat #9 on draft and I'll be a happy camper any day!
Great place to watch sporting events or to enjoy a brewsky with a buddy...the food's pretty decent too but why stray from the wings? lolListed in: New England...more than just…

I love J. Timothy's. First off, it's HUGE and if you don't want to wait for a table they'll tell you that you're more than welcome to sit in the bar or above the bar (which is my favorite place to sit). There are also quite a few fireplaces (gas) in there so it can be cozy in the winter.
The things I love there are the following:
1. big menu--there are so many things on it that I have a hard time ordering.
2. good beer selection
3. DIRT WINGs! double sauced/double fried. I order them fried twice and sauced once because I like them crispy and that second saucing makes them too wet for me.
4. I like their French Dip sammich very much. It's always lean and always good.
the ONLY potential thing that I wish J. Tims had but they don't: a patio. Great beer and great wings in the summer--eaten on a patio would be awesome. -

We'll make this one simple.
Great wings, AWESOME beer selection, great ambiance. J. Timothy's is a must try!
My suggestions:
1. Get the onion strings for appetizer
2. Get the regular wings in a bucket
3. Get a mixed beer concoction (some great ones to be had!)
4. Make sure you have LOADS of napkins
5. Go more than once and be sure to sit in the smithy at least once, interesting!
6. Read the history of the place
7. Bring a bunch of friends and have someone else drive! :) -
Review from Jenny F.
We have heard numerous people talk about how good the "dirt" style wings are as well as the deep fried burgers. Yes , you heard me right, DEEP FRIED BURGER! Even though I have been counting my calories like crazy I had decided to throw all that out the window this past weekend. All I can say is that J Timothy's is awesome. We had split the Mexican burger which was delicious and also split an order of the dirt style buffalo wings also delicious. The burger was a great combination of being juicy and crispy and the wings were probably the best that I have ever had. So crispy and tangy! Portions are decent an I felt a little less guilty by splitting the burger with my husband. Cool place but looks to always be busy on the weekends.

Whenever I make it up to visit my family in Connecticut, J TImothy's is one of the first places I request to go if we decide to go out to dinner.
Even if you are like me and rarely order an appetizer you HAVE to try the dirt wings. They are amazing. I am not usually a particulary big wing fan, but these wings really are probably the best that I have ever had. The buffalo variety "dirty style" were my favorite. The rest of their food is also good too.
Also useful to note is that while they do not take reservations (if your party is under 6), they do allow you to call ahead and put your name on the waiting list. This is a great option and I recommend taking advantage of it. Both times I called ahead our names were already almost at the top of the list when we arrived, so our wait time was only about 5-10 minutes (even though it was a Friday night). If I had not done this it would have been more like a 20-30 minute wait. -
Review from Paul S.
A pleasant spot. Food's pretty average, but loved the wings! Had Buffalo style and Honey BBQ, both done "Dirty Style," which is sauced, fried and sauced again. The sauces were very nice. The Buffalo had a slight bite that built as you ate, but not so much that you couldn't finish an order. The BBQ had a great, complex sweetness. And the chicken was good quality too, not simply some bones to hold sauce.
The rest of the order was fine. Wouldn't say they're the best at any of the other stuff we had, but very competent and decently priced.
Our server was busy, but she was also willing to give us the attention we needed and our bus boy/food runner relayed other requests very quickly.
Overall, a good value and a great place to get your wing on.
Oh, they'll do the wings take-out for you as well. That's a great option if they're super busy, which is often the case. -

This was one of the great meals I've had in some time. I'm up in CT visiting a friend, and she says to me "Let's go to J Timothy's: my family used to go there all of the time for wings". Personally, I wasn't so sure that I only wanted wings for dinner, but they had other things on their menu, so we went.
So first off, the wings. Jesus Christ on a cracker, order the wings. We got a Single Original Buffalo Dirt Style for an appetizer, and they were AMAZING. I don't have wings that often, but these definitely blew away any wings I've ever had before. Perfect texture, perfect taste, just go for it. The Single came with 10 wings, which was a perfect number for us to split.
For a meal, I got a burger, adding cheese and fried onion (both cost extra) to the lettuce, tomato, and pickles that come with it already. The burger was big, the fried onions were actual fried onions (since fried onions are often actually grilled, this was a surprise, but not an unpleasant one), and even the fries were excellent.
We were sat instantly, had a friendly server, and had a great meal. Highly recommended. -

In town visiting a couple of friends, they suggested this place for it's amazing wings. Well they weren't lying...the wings here are delicious! Double-dipped so they are extra crispy and extra saucy...mmm!
There were seven of us and we had the bbq and buffalo wings as an appetizer. Both were terrific! I usually don't care for bbq wings but these ones were definitely changed my opinion on that.
The menu also offers a number of different things and all of the food that came out looked amazing! My turkey burger was so good and the prime rib was perfect.
Along with the wings I have to say my favorite thing about this place was the beer selection. Summer-time draughts are my favorite and they had a ton of them!
The place is huge, waitstaff very attentive and friendly and overall nice atmosphere...highly recommended for anyone out in the middle of CT. -

Went here the other night cause the significant other was cravin' some wings. We ended up having a party of 8 and the waitress was on top of everything. She didn't even get upset with all my "that's what she said" jokes. But she really brought those upon herself with a beer named doggy style... I mean come on.
I felt like dabbling in some mystery so I tried a recommended beer that was some raspberry and chocolate brew. Not bad... actually quite tasty and the waitress said if I didn't like it she could just switch it out. Cool huh? Well I stayed with it and glad I did.
I ended up ordering a bucket of wings for $24.99, which is not bad because there were A LOT and they were yummy. I would have to say the original wing sauce is the best here, the others don't really compare. Someone else at my table ordered a scallop salad which she was raving about the whole night.
All in all a very pleasant dining experience and will have to say the waitress really knew what she was doing and very professional.
P dot S dot: am I the only one who thinks this place looks like a giant barn? -
Review from Michael F.
Hamden, CT
Wings have been the only thing I have tried there but people I have gone with have tried the salads. From my "wings" experience I have been more than satisfied. The original buffalo dirty style is the way to go. Dirty style means cooked twice and gives it an extra crispy texture. Their Bleu Cheese dressing is a great compliment to the not too spicy buffalo sauce. I would eat there more often if it wasn't a 25 min drive from me. Although it is worth every minute of that drive.
The beer selection is rather large compared to a normal restaurant and I enjoy my beer. They have multiple brewers from the States, as well as, from other countries. I think my only complaint is that they do not have my beer of choice, Stella Artois, on tap. But that does not shy me away from their other beers on tap.
Not a first, second, or even third date type of a restaurant unless you know the person. This is a nice night out with a group of friends type setting for the mere fact that it gets loud and you must talk louder than usual to be heard. -

The dirt wings at J. Tim's are our favorite wings of all time. The cheddar and ale soup is SOOO good. It's usually busy but always worth the wait. The service is good. Beer and wine selection are also good. Prices are a little high but we don't mind paying them because the food is consistently great. Don't be turned off by parking all the way in the back - the place is large inside.
