Time and time again, gilberts gets it done. I've been here more than any other steakhouse in town, for good reason! The staff here provides a consistent product each and every time I visit. I've come here for lunch, I've come here for special dates, I've come here on NYE - always spot on.
My most recent visit was on a saturday night, which offers live acoustical beats from Scott (splits his night at Chicago Uno on the plaza). I got here with a buddy about 8:30 and slid up to the bar, my location of choice (tv's for you sports guys). I went ahead with my usual dirty goose martini with bleu cheese olives (maytag bleu cheese folks) and looked over the menu to see if any new additions were being offered.
I decided on the tomato & mozzarella salad to start with, which was quite nice. Tomato and mozz served in a stack with red onions, atop a bed of some nice frisee and vinegarette.
Ordered a glass of Estancia pinot noir (11/glass) and my entree arrived, the Louisiana skillet filet. This 8oz filet comes served with a mushroom saute and poblano au gratin potatoes. This filet is rubbed up with some nice cajun spices and seared in a cast iron skillet. This thing really has some flavor - definitely a must-order for lovers of spice.
I read a lot of comments about this place being pricey, really? 31 for a perfect steak with two nice sides, that isn't too much to ask. I prefer J. Gilbert's over Ruth's Chris.
"I feel like 100% right now"
"Oh yeah, we are definitely coming back here!"
We were famished and wiped out after a long afternoon. Seeing J. Gilbert's, we decided to go in and check it out; we'd stay if we liked it. As soon as we walked in, we were at ease. The music was very pleasant, mellow but not bland, loud enough to hear but not so loud as to overwhelm our conversation. The lighting and decor added to our newly relaxed mood, and our tense exhaustion just melted away. Even the air conditioning was just right.
Our waitress was top-notch. We all spotted the three-course prix fixe and decided we had to try it even though we hadn't planned to order that much food. It just looked too good to resist. We also ordered a very nice bottle of red wine and at dinner's end found out it was $10 off that night (Sunday). What a pleasant surprise!
My friends both had salads which looked beautiful. I went for the crab bisque, a favorite of mine when done right -- and this was done right, delicious and rich but not so filling as to destroy the dinner. Delectable is the word.
The main course: They each chose the petite filet plus scallops with a balsamic reduction or salmon, cheddar mashed potatoes, and asparagus. I chose the sirloin and asked for risotto instead of potatoes. Everything was perfect, especially the rare and juicy steaks.
Then dessert. Although the chocolate Pompeii souffle sounded very tempting, none of us could resist the creme brulee. What a feast.
Oh yeah, definitely -- we'll be back.
Good...pricey, but good. Went here recently for a bridal shower. We had a private room, which was nice. The sever was professional and polite, he never pressured us to hurry. Steaks were excellent of course, no complaints. I will caution though, and it may be obvious, but there are really only a few vegetarian options. There is a vegetarian entree, but other than that, its just salads. Made it a little difficulty for one in our party, but I suppose you should expect that when you go to a steak restaurant. Overall 4 stars, for good, but not amazing food.
Yelp to the rescue in an unfamiliar town once again. Tonight I wanted steak, so I turned to my favorite review site and found J Gilbert's not far from the hotel.
As is my norm, I sat at the bar. Both bartenders were very friendly and took equally good care of me. I ordered the tomato/mozz salad which had very fresh tomatoes, mozz, and basil. It was the perfect size for what I wanted.
Following up the salad, I ordered the 12 oz. KC strip. I nearly went for the 16 oz, but considering I had the salad, it was a good idea I stuck to the smaller portion. I ordered the steak med-rare, which was probably a mistake since it came out more done than is my usual preference. However the flavor was still top notch. It also came with fresh asparagus and delicious poblano au gratin potatoes. I am not usually big on au gratin, but the poblano made these very good.
J Gilbert's is a bit on the pricey side, but would be perfect for date night or other special occasions. Definitely a good steak house in the KC area.
J Gilbert's is a little pricey but sign up for their email club and you will get great coupons. They also typcially have a 3 course menu for only $30. The food is well worth the price. Great place to go if you are craving steak or simply seafood.
this was a great night out. we sat by the fireplace. We loved the food. the service was great.
I thought about a lot of different places to take the girl I'm dating for her birthday. Its the first time I've taken her out for a special occasion so had to make sure I picked the right kind of place. After hearing about it from a couple friends, I decided to give it a shot and man, it was delicious and everything I expected.
Its not in the greatest location, sitting on the outside corner of a strip mall parking lot in northern Overland Park. That's not a bad location but just not the location of a place you expect to drop $100+ on dinner at.
I made reservations on OpenTable and we walked in and the hostess was nowhere to be found, which was surprising for a place like this. The interior is kind of like a hunting lodge, its dark and has a calm, romantic feel to it. Once seated in a large, cozy booth, the service got much better. Our server was great from start to finish, offering suggestions and answering questions, but not sticking around too long or talking too much (one of my major restaurant pet peeves).
We ended up ordering Maytag Bleu Potato Chips for our appetizer and they were delicious. I would have liked more cheese but otherwise, perfect. After that, we split a bowl of Smoked Chicken Tortilla Soup. I've never had guacamole with soup before but it was excellent.
For the main course, I ordered a 12 oz. KC Strip with white cheddar chipotle mashed potatoes and asparagus. I'm not a steak fanatic, though I do enjoy them, but this was possibly the best steak I've ever had. Wow it was good, as were the potatoes. She had the lobster ravioli and liked it a lot too.
We pared our main courses with a Blackstone Merlot, which was pretty decent too. A nice surprise at the end was a free chocolate velvet cake, along with a card thanking us for coming. I have no idea why we got this, though I wish I could say it was because I'd called ahead and told them it was a birthday dinner. Maybe it was because I made the reservation on OpenTable and marked that it was my first time there.
It was definitely a pricey meal but man it was great and splurging on a nice meal sometimes is totally worth it. I'll be back - what a great spot.
It is a little spendy to come here - but you get what you pay for. This is the best place to get a steak in KC. The Louisiana Skillet Seared Center Cut filet was my choice and it was perfect. But you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Also, these guys aren't one trick ponies. A couple of people I was with had the halibut and were equally wowed. We also shared the appetizer sampler - the home cut potato chips with blue cheese and the crab cakes won rave reviews.
The liquor and specialty drink list is extensive. I had a Zentini - a green tea liqueur based martini. It wasn't too sweet, but it also wasn't so overwhelming alcohol wise....which means it was perfectly mixed.
Don't overlook the $30 price fix menu - an appetizer, a selection of a main entree and a dessert is included. The creme brulee met all of our approval.
A great meal! Based on Lyn's suggestion (below), I got the prix fixe menu (salad, entre, desert=$32) and enjoyed every bite. Barkeep made a mean Manhattan too.
Must try!
I love this restaurant! This is by far my favorite place to go when I'm craving a filet. The staff is attentive, the food is excellent and the wine list is decent - what more can you ask for? This is where I request to go on my birthday every year. It's a nice restaurant without that uptight feeling.
There is also a membership club you can join. It's something like $20 to join (lifetime membership) and just for your birthday alone, you get a $25 gift certificate. The more you go, the more points you get and then you can cash them in whenever. My parents do this and can't say enough good things about it.
Also make sure to ask for the chiptotle mash potatoes - you will not be disappointed - they are heaven.
I have been here on many occasions. The steaks, as one would hope, are excellent.... I have never been disappointed by them even when getting the 24oz porterhouse. The mashed potatoes are also heavenly... I still have yet to match their excellence. The soups I have had have also been good. The desserts are also quite good, if sometimes a bit too rich. Good wine list. I only wish it was a bit cheaper.
Went here a couple of months ago after hearing several of my friends describe it as the best steak in Kansas City. While I found it very tasty, I must admit some disappointment. When ordering steak I typically go with a KC strip, great balance between flavor and lean. My favorite steak for flavor is a ribeye, however I rarely order it as most places serve a cheap very fatty version. I figured that the $30 version at J Gilberts would be nicely marbled and without excessively large chunks of fat. I was wrong. The steak itself could have been mistaken for one from longhorns, texas roadhouse, or (insert low quality steak chain). The flavor of the steak was indeed top notch. Excellent sear on the outside that clearly tasted of the wood fire. Its worth noting that a good wood fire sear is often hard to come by but this was spot on. Another disappointment was the portions. My steak came with about 3 spoon fulls of mashed potatoes and 3-4 small carrots. For $30 couldn't they at least give me a good heap of mash? For dessert we had a fruit "cannolli". It was not good, nuff said. All in all, great steak flavor, questionable portions sizes and steak quality. (I will admit that its possible I just got the crappy ribeye in the case, it happens.)
On a night alone in Overland Park, before a big meeting the next day, I decided to visit J. Gilbert's. Even though, I already made a reservation, The maitre D decided that I will be more comfortable at the bar..which I was.
I ordered a local beer (a la Hoogaarden with a lemon), some crabmakes and the kansas city strip.
The beer was good, the steak was great and the crabcakes were out of this world. I would have rated this place higher if not for the steak which was a little bit on the dry side. It could have been my fault since I ordered the steak to be medium rather than medium rare.
You can't go wrong with J Gilberts. Excellent food with matching service. Grand steaks prepared as you may request. I particularly like their crab appetizer accompanied by their specialty Mango martini.
one of my fav places glad to see it gets great reviews if you like steak, fish, chicken nothing disappoints, great wine list and you can book a table online usually the same day
