Just ate here with my girlfriend and had a great time!

Service: Our server Alan was very knowledgeable and attentive. Top notch!

Food: Picked from the restaurant week menu and found plenty of great stuff to order. I got the pork chop (14oz huge!) and katie got the scallops with lobster risotto. Both were delicious. The apps and desert were just as good.

Atmosphere: Lively but easy to talk over. We got a booth and had plenty of space. Kind of added to the whole night.

Downside: My negroni came with an orange slice instead of a twist of lemon. Very minor but only nit pick of the night.

Overall: Something for every taste. We'll be back again.

Overhyped for the price. I thought this would be a special place for the wife and my anniversary. I was right about the romantic atmosphere at least but the rest, not so much.

We started with the onion rings which might have been our favorite part of the meal. I really liked all four sauces they came with. The steak was good and tender but needs a serious seasoning addition. My wife didn't like any of the sides, and I thought most of them were below average. The lobster mac was very bland and I ended up picking out the lobster pieces to eat and leaving the rest. I liked the asparagus but I think I got maybe 6 stalks in total. The wine list was impressive but most were out of my price range. I settled for a mediocre bottle of chardonnay that tasted like could have been had for a few bucks at a grocery.

Dessert was pretty good creme brulee but nothing to write home about. I'll take the creme brulee at Figlio any day. Also they got our order wrong the first time and brought my wife an incorrect side. For two people, the bill came to about 100 bucks which we both felt bad for spending given the quality. Will not return.

Well lets see.  I've been here at least ten times.  The food is always delicious, and generally a good deal in terms of steakhouses since the sides are included (I mean really, who is going to order just "steak" anyway).

Their service has been going down hill and now it is so bad that it is not even worth going because we get too upset.  We went this summer and our waitress totally forgot about us while out smoking or something and after asking for our drinks three times we had to ask management to bring our drinks.  Then last night we had a reservation, yet still had to wait 40 minutes to be seated and the horrible service just continued on all night.  Horrid.  Don't go!

My wife and I have eaten here a few times and every time has been top notch. The flavor in everything is wonderful. I haven't had a bad steak yet and the servers are so friendly and helpful every time.

If you haven't had it yet, try their homemade steak sauce. It somehow has the taste of a nice hot campfire infused in it and really packs a punch in your steak when you dip a piece in it but it's not the kind of sauce you'd want to pour all over your steak. They will give you some on the side if you ask and I love dipping just about everything in it. Not that the steak needs it of course!

I can't say much about their dessert menu. I am always way too full to eat dessert. The prices are on the moderately higher side but the steaks are worth every penny and we do not mind splurging every now and then on a great steak.

How far can a restaurant fall in just one visit?

The wife, kid-unit, and I all went to JG's for our annual New Year's Eve fete with our good friends.  This has been a tradition since before the kid-unit would even eat steak.

There was very little "good" to say about our visit.  The wait-staff (we had two, a girl who introduced herself, and a man who did not) was aloof, though relatively attentive to our needs.  Our friends had a few questions about items on the menu, and out waiter answered them knowledgeably, but in a really "put-off" manner.

I ordered my standard, which is the triple filet (two Bearnaise,  one mushroom sauce), along with a shrimp cocktail and a wedge salad.  Kiddo ordered the kids filet ($12), and the wife ordered a baked potato and a shrimp cocktail as well.

My steaks were done correctly (medium), and the Bearnaise was good.  The mushrooms have changed from a mushroom in a wine reduction to wine-soaked mushrooms (not good).  The sides were fine, though unremarkable.

The shrimp cocktail has changed significantly since I was there last.  In the past, the shrimp was served on a bed of tortilla strips and peppers with a vinaigrette.  This is no longer the case, though.  Instead, the shrimp was served over a bed of ice "diamonds" (hard to call them anything else, because the clarity of the ice was actually quite impressive).  The shrimp was served with traditional cocktail sauce (with fresh horseradish-- a nice touch), and a remoulade, as well.

Quality of the shrimp was good, with the exception of one of them that still had a leg attached.  Not a big deal, but also not the quality I expect from JGs'.

This is where things went downhill.  My daughter's steak was served, and though it was a decent portion for a filet, it had an odor about it.  At first I chalked it up to either the wood smoke from the grilling, or from the other food.

After I cut it up, she tried it and told me she didn't like the flavor (which is really unusual for her).  I tried it as well, and found the flavor "off" a bit.  She ate about half the steak, and finished up her chips and grazed at some of the items on our shared appetizer plates.  I tried another piece and found the steak to be "sour."

I took a piece over to my wife, had her smell it and taste it.  After about two bites, she had to spit it out.

I took a piece to the manager, and he declared the smell to be "fine", but graciously offered to remove the entree from our bill (which I accepted).  However, the more I think about it, the more I believe that the beef they served my daughter had begun to go bad.

This is the quality I absolutely don't expect from JG's, and hope this was a one-time occurrence, but for more than a hundred bucks for the meal, I want to be wowed, not disgusted.

Stopped by with some friends for happy hour and appetizers.  Bar was over crowed. My first drink was while standing.  Once our group found a table, we ordered more drinks and appetizers while telling the waiter we needed separate checks.  Our appetizers were special happy  hour price but were no better that what you would find at Applebees. When we asked for our checks the waiter returned with one check.  We asked once again for separate checks.  He said it would take some time to divide the check.  He was told we had another event to attend and we could only wait another 10 min.  When he returned with check they were all wrong.  It took the manager to correct the problem and about 30 min.

    Will not be back.

I thought for sure I had reviewed this, whoops!  We went last year for Thanksgiving dinner and it was all nice but soooooooo crowded.  We finally got around to returning the other day and so happy we did.

The decor and ambiance are very nice and your typical look for a steakhouse, ie. lots of dark wood and brick.  Service was very good and as a bonus, on Sundays you get 10$ off any bottle of wine you order and what you don't polish off you get to take home.  Alrighty then!!!

Their bread basket consists of two awesome pieces of sourdough and pretzel bread.  I went for the prix-fixe menu and hubs went for his big plug of steak.  Let me say that if you order their wedge salad - share it!  That, I am pretty positive about, is the biggest wedge salad I have ever gotten anywhere.  We each ordered one and couldn't finish them.  The maytag bleu cheese dressing was very good, just the perfect bit of sharpness to it.

Their seafood is good (I had a crabcake but it was just a bit dry to me) but where they excel is their grilled meats.  You can taste, as soon as that first bit sits on your taste buds, the wood grilled flavoring.  And not just with the first bite or two...all the way to the end even if it is eaten later as a leftover.

And mentioning leftovers, they will package it for you and bring it back in a box with a bow around it as well as re-cork your bottle of wine and put a seal on it so that you will not get into any trouble on your way home.

So I've been on a steak kick and I've been told time and again that J Gilbert's was an excellent choice.

Unfortunately, not in my experience.  I got the fixed price menu with the filet and salmon combination.

    My salad was good, sure.

The steak was overdone to start, and surprisingly devoid of flavor.  I had the same issue with the salmon.  The mashed potatoes were good, the roasted corn I substituted in due to my asparagus aversion was just kinda icky.

Dessert was chocolate cake, which was ok as well.

The service was excellent.  Marcus helped us out and was a pretty damn cool guy.

With the balance of good and bads in this review, I might have given this a 3-star rating for "A-OK"...whch kind of means "Just OK" in my head, but at $85 for the two of us...I should have been wowed.  So, I've experienced better and was unfortunately disappointed.

I went here for dinner last week. The ambiance was not what I expected for a steakhouse; it almost reminded me of a lodge. The service is great (although our meals took forever to arrive), and the servers are very helpful. Shortly after ordering, warm sourdough bread arrives at your table. While extremely tempting, don't finish it off before your meal comes!

I started with the Caesar salad, which was pretty good....just a standard Caesar. For the main course I ordered the combination, consisting of a  6 oz. filet and substituted the lobster tail for salmon per request. It was served with their chipotle mashed potatoes and asparagus. Unfortunately, I forgot to order my filet mignon medium rare (and the server failed to ask), so it was a tad overcooked for my liking. Regardless, it was still pretty tender.

The salmon was quite tasty and had flavor from whatever kind of wood was used to smoke it. The asparagus was cooked to perfection, and the chipotle potatoes definitely added some heat to the meal! You may want to steer clear of those if you can't handle much spice.

Dinner was finished off with the creme brulee for dessert. It was a tough decision between that and the chocolate cake, but the server recommended the creme brulee, so I went with it! No disappointments, but I'll have to try the chocolate cake next time...if there is one.

Visited for Thanksgiving day lunch. They had a special menu for the occasion. I ordered steak and scallops. Do they EVER know how to make scallops, yum. Very class place. Steak wasn't medium rare but rather medium. Oh and their new thing is recycling wine corks. Different and cool. I am a fan. Worth trying out.

A hidden gem.  Part of a small chain owned by Houlihans.  The only one in Ohio.  Atmosphere is standard high end steak house.  As soon as we walked in, to the time we left, we were treated with grace.  In between the food was perfect, on time, and VERY tasty.  One of the few places left where two sides are included with your main dish.  Most of us had the surf and turf selections, with either a 4 or 6 oz filet (get it R or MR) and a fish/seafood.  It was all perfect, as were the sides.  The drinks are a very generous pour!  We had two birthdays and they comped us two deserts of our choice.  Nice touch.  Even though it is quite a distance from 43209; we'll be back!

One of my favorite restaurants in Columbus, for sure.  This was our second time here and even better than the first. (We went for the bar's happy hour last time - ditch the durango shrimp, get the filet. The chocolate "souffle" - more like a lava cake, was pretty good). We went for the regular dining because they mailed me a $25 coupon for my birthday.

We started off with the maytag potato chips because of a foursquare deal - I thought it was pretty good, the girlfriend thought it was just ok. I normally don't like blue cheese, but the dressing had a great bite and aged cheese taste to it. SUPER greasy though.

Our meal was then followed up by a sourdough bread with two different types of butter. Neither of us like sourdough, so it was meh. Though the 2nd type of butter - not sure what it was - smelled and tasted great. Some other reviewers got pretzel bread.

My gf got the 4oz filet mignon combo with crab cake, lobster mac and cheese, and sauteed spinach. The spinach is what you'd expect, nothing mind blowing. Crab cakes were delicious, although a little dry. However, they have a tasty tangy dipping sauce for the crab which more than makes up for it. The lobster mac and cheese...omg, they was heaven in a dish. I've never tasted mac and cheese so good. Also had these breadcrumbs or something on top that gave it such a nice little crunch. She got her steak medium as her jaw was a little sore and didn't want to get medium rare. Still extremely juicy, in fact, I thought it was juicier than my medium rare (though she thought the opposite). For my filet, I had the garlic brocolini and mushroom risotto sides. The risotto was pretty good, creamy and lots of mushrooms. The brocolini was about average.

Since they knew we were going for my birthday, I was also offered a free dessert, score! They brought out a tray with all their dessert offerings and we got the almond canoli because the pile of berries was speaking to me. Excellent, excellent. Great crunch to the canoli, the chocolate mousse filling wasn't too heavy (though it kinda tasted like dark chocolate nutella as the consistency was about the same), berries were very sweet (probably soak in sugar?), and the white sauce wasn't overly sweet.

We also got a "pearly white" wine flight. Some amazing smelling (fruity) wines that tasted pretty good.

Our service was some of the best I've had. I didn't catch our server's name, but he was extremely nice and was just great all around. There was a bit of a wait time in between being seated and seeing our server though.

Our ~$90 meal came down to about $50 after my $25 coupon, free appetizer, and free dessert. They even have a promotion right now of a free $20 GC when you buy $100 - we're planning on coming back. They send you offers in the mail all the time if you sign up for their emails. As we were leaving, the employees at the entrance actually gave us a $25 off $75 coupon =D.

Overall - Great food at a price point you'd expect to pay much more in larger cities.

We went here on Thanksgiving and were expecting more from it. We had the onion rings for an appitizer which were nothing special and 4 rings for $8 is a bit expensive. The salad was fine, nothing special, not enough dressing and very small portion. My hunsband had a steak which was overdone and he had asked for medium. They took it back and brought a fresh one and took his meal off the tab which was nice. For sides we had brocolli which was 4 tiny pieces of rabe and I had the Salmon which has good and the veggie platter which was alos good but too oily and half of it was mushrooms (cheaper I guess). Dessert was good, we had the berry cobbler, carrot cake and choclate cake, in all we still paid $100 and were neither full nor really satisfied, I recommend going to J Alexanders next door for a much better meal that satisfy you more for less!

Completely satisfied with this meal! I have been to Morton's, and I much prefer J Gilbert's to Morton's. We tried the Calamari, which was really good. I went with their Pre Fixe menu (I'm a sucker for these) with the Caesar, petite fillet and salmon and creme brulee.

The fillet was to die for. I don't think it had much, if any seasoning, but it melted in my mouth and that tells me they have really good meat. I always ask for steak rare, because I love it rare and I really like it med. rare, so I figure if they overcook it a little I'm fine. My "rare" was more medium rare, but it was amazing nonetheless. The mashed potatoes that came with the meal were cheesy and wonderful. The salmon was not the best piece of fish I have ever had, but it definitely was not the worst. I really like pre fixe menus for the diversity, but if I went back I would just stick to seafood or steak- not a combo of the two.

The Caesar was a really nice rendition, it came with anchovies for the people out there who like that kind of thing. The greens were fresh and crispy, and it was a really large portion.

The creme brulee was not the best I've ever had--that coveted position is reserved for Cameron's. It was still pretty good for a pre fixe meal dessert.

Service was really good here, which always adds to a dining experience. There were six of us, including my Dad who likes to rib servers-- she took his jokes in stride and had some fun with us.

I was there again tonight and it's still worth five stars.  But to be frank, I've been there another half dozen times and I figured that they were due for another review.

This time I decided to get seafood.  I started out with their shrimp coctail and they were superb as usual.  My main plate was the seafood platter, which consisted of a piece of salmon, a crabcake, four pieces of shrimp, cheddar mashed potatoes and sauteed spinach!  I was FULL!!  But another great meal!

I got the bone-in ribeye and was expecting much more.  I'm no butcher but the meat seemed to be really poor quality.  Very sinewy.  Not tender at all.  I ordered it medium rare, it was cooked medium rare, but my jaw was tired.  Someone else got the fillet and it looked really unimpressive but I was told it as "ok".  The potatoes and the lobster mac and cheese were good but that was about it.  A steakhouse with crappy steak.  My guess is that their trying to reduce costs because business is down due to the economy.  I can get a better ribeye under cellophane at Kroger.  Very little quality for the money.  The service was good at least.

I noticed no one mentioned that J. Gilbert's is owned by the Houlihans chain, which blew my mind (because I never liked that restaurant) and it was a little disappointing when I learned the news.  The upshot is that there are only a handful of J. Gilberts throughout the midwest and east coast- and Columbus is lucky enough to have one at Worthington Crosswoods. Chain or not, it is a great restaurant.

The dining room is classic steakhouse and the bistro-like bar is chic. Don't even get me started on the steaks, which are top notch. I can't say it's my favorite steakhouse in town, but the quality and portions are great for the prices. J. Gilbert's happy hour food specials are awesome too... The surf and turf special can't be beat.

This was a great experience.  We had visited J. Gilbert's years ago, but somehow it had fallen off our radar.  We decided last night on a whim to give it a go, and we were NOT disappointed.

To start off, we had an excellent server who was able to make some great wine suggestions.  Of course, my husband had to point out he did recommend one of the more expensive selections.  Well, I think it was well worth it.

I had the house salad, a very nice mixed greens salad with pine nuts, etc.  It was fresh, tasty, and served on a chilled plate with a chilled fork.  It was a nice touch that many other restaurants fail to do.

The main course for me was the BBQ pork chops with the chipotle mashed potatoes was fantastic.  The chops were not especially thick, but by the time I was done, I was nicely full.  I would recommend this dish to anyone.

For dessert, we shared their apple and cherry crisp (with a nice dip of ice cream on top).  It was a very generous portion, but was perfect for sharing.  We cleaned it up, even though we were pretty full.  We just couldn't help ourselves.

All in all, I can't think of anything bad to say about our experience.  It was a friendly, warm, and welcoming atmosphere.  The restaurant was nicely full, but they still had room for us even though we didn't have a reservation on a Friday night.  Give it a try if you've never been.  I don't think you'll be disappointed.

This is one of the few steak houses you can get Prime CAB (Certified Angus Beef).  About 1% of the beef out there makes this grade, plus, the meat is wet aged about 21 days.

So, needless to say the meat should be tasty, right?  Well thankfully, in this case, this is right.  They try to add toppings like blue cheese, shitake mushrooms and bernaise sauce, but I'd encourage you not to add these things - they just detract from the meat flavor.

The steaks I'd reccomend are the fillet and the strip.  I haven't had the bone in fillet yet, but I'm imagining it's just as good.

Appetizers to try are the blue cheese chips and that's about it.  Stay away from the Calamari, crab cakes and especially the muscles - they all lack flavor and zest.

I have been four times to this place. First time I thought other local steak and sea food places were better. But this restaurant has really grown on me. First, consistently excellent service. Every once and awhile disappear as it gets busy, but otherwise very good professional wait staff. They have a great menu. I like their steak preparations and find consistently prepared perfectly to order. Like the apps. Dessert tray thing predictable but quality of desserts good.

Went here with family for restaurant week. We couldn't get reservations so we sat at the bar. I got the wedge salad first which was so-so. I ordered the petite filet combo with bbq shrimp for my main course. The filet was cooked just right and was very good, so was the shrimp. The cheddar mashed potatos were to die for. My brother had the same with scallops. Now I am not a huge fan of scallops but man were they good! I had the creme brulee for dessert and it was fantastic. I think I will have to go back and try the regular menu (which I found out has a similar prix-fix menu all the time).

Had a wonderful meal here. The steak and steak fries are to die for!! Definitely going back again, but next time we'll make reservations!! It was an hour plus wait for a table. We chose to sit in the bar area and were seated I'm about twenty minutes. The service was a bit slow, but it was prime time on a saturday!!

Boy, do I ever miss this place! After I moved to the eastside, I haven't been back, but the memories linger on.

I like this place much more before the fascist smoking ban went into affect. This was the best cigar bar on the North End of Columbus. The bartenders were always friendly and professional. They knew what they were doing and were very good at it.

Did I mention the martinis? Wow - are they good here! In addition, the food is incredible. Whatever they grill - steak, chicken, seafood - it is remarkable. You'll love the flavor and the ambiance.

Whether you need to wind down or wind up - J Gilbert's is the place to go. It's an exquisite upper-shelf establishment that caters to your every appetite. Enjoy!

Had a very nice dinner tonight at J. Gilberts. interestingly, i had a business dinner last night in Indianapolis at Shula's Steakhouse. the contrast was striking. Dinner for 4 at Shula's with no wine or dessert...$300. Dinner for 5 at J. Gilbert's with wine and dessert...$240. tomato salad at Shula's...$9 and nothing but tasteless supermarket tomatoes. Heirloom Tomato salad at J. Gilberts...very nicely substituted for another salad on the prix fixe menu and delicious, tasting like summer. all our steaks were done perfectly. Some of paired them with scallops which were fantastic. Even the sides were great.

We all got the prix fixe meal which is an excellent deal. $33 gets you a choice of 2 salads or  soup (our waiter gladly let us substitute the Heirloom tomato salad that was a special); choice of 5 or 6 entrees including steak and seafood options -- all with excellent sides which they happily substitute. and they cap it off with a choice of 2 desserts although our server let us choose from the entire dessert menu.

Looking at the meal as a whole and value for the money, quite honestly i put it up with Hyde Park, Mitchell's, etc.

The ribeye here was top notch. Even though it was on the bone, it was cooked to medium rare perfection. Not a big fan of the ancho chile fried onions but the white cheddar chipotle mashed was very good. I got a crabcake on the side for 10 bucks which is a little steep but it was pretty much all crabmeat very little filler. Great scotch selection too! An excellent steak joint!

This place is great. It is definitely one of my favorites in the Columbus area. My parents love this place as well and it is pretty much one of our staples when we are looking for a nice meal. The menu is great, much more than your typical Steak and Seafood place. They have several other dishes that look great that aren't steak or seafood, but I love steak so I have always ended up getting a dish that had at least some steak. One of my absolute favorites here is the Filet trio, which used to be a special, but I'm assuming due to its popularity is now a regular on the menu. Three filet medallions with three different toppings- Bearnaise sauce, Maytag Blue cheese, and wild mushrooms. All are fantastic! On my latest visit I was craving some Salmon but wasn't willing to give up my steak so I got the Petite Filet Combo with the Grilled Atlantic Salmon and it hit the spot! The sides are great too, I usually get the White Cheddar Chipotle mashed potatoes which are delicious but I also tried the Lobster Mac and Cheese that my brother ordered and it was TO DIE FOR! I also very much enjoy the asparagus they serve with the entree. Asparagus is one of my favorite vegetables but they serve it with this little tomato salsa on top and it adds a fantastic touch. I haven't ventured out too much myself in ordering different things of the menu as I am a lover of steak but some of my dinner partners have ordered other entrees and no one has ever been disappointed. They also have a great selection of appetizers, a great wine list, and very tempting desserts! Oh I forgot to mention that the Maryland Crab Bisque is DELICIOUS!! If you are looking for a soup/salad, entree, and dessert try their Prix Fixe menu they are currently featuring for $34/pp. There are only two desserts listed as options but the servers are fantastic and have always let us choose anything we want. GREAT SERVICE! I highly recommend this place and will definitely keep coming back. (Oh, also I recommend signing up for their e-mail program, the send out great coupons all the time!)

Have gone there for drinks and appetizers and also another time to have dinner.  Super nice bartenders. Some martinis are special priced if you go between 4 and 7 and sit at the bar.  The maytag bleu chips are great if you like blue cheese.  You can also order them without the cheese and they are crispy and thin and delicious.  When you order the crabcakes as an appetizer they serve you 2 of them plus in the center a delicious little salad with carrots, cabbage(?) very thinly sliced tortilla chips  and I can't remember what else but it is so crispy and fresh tasting. The calamari was acceptable --the best part being the nice light tempura batter. The calamari is also served with carrots and jalapenos they fry in the same batter -yummy.  As far as the steak...unfortunately I did not know until I tried the  "wood fired" steaks. - that wood fired is not a flavor I particularly care for.  I'm not sure what I thought the flavor would be.....anyway it's not my thing but that being said - the quality of the steak was fantastic!  We each had the $30 price fix menu.  This was a great choice as you choose a salad, a main entree, potato,  and dessert.  We chose caeser salad, steak and shrimp, and steak and crab cake plus cheddar mashed potatoes. They even put some asparagus on the plate too. The steak is about a 4 -5 oz. portion with the pre-fixe dinner. The cheddar mashed potatoes were great--not too cheddary, just right.  The crab cake was good but had a bit too much filler.  The shrimp were wood fired too but with a sauce that was slightly spicy glazed over them--smoky tasting but if you like the flavor of the steak you would love em'.     Dessert with the pre-fixe menu was chocolate cake or creme brulee.  We chose the cake because we wanted it to go as we were full.  It was really really good and fresh with a cream sauce.  And they don't chintz out and give you a tiny piece because it is a pre-fixe price.  Service was excellent. Nice ambience; dark wood and comfortable booths.   Everyone was super nice; staff seems happy to be there which also says a lot about a place.
I also wanted to point out that the menu is just the right size--plenty but not so many choices that they cannot focus.   I dislike when i go to a restaurant and they have 100 choices because you know it cannot all be good.  Better to offer a smaller menu and focus on quality.

While the food was pretty good, my wife and I were sorely disappointed with the service given our group of six had an average ticket of $65 or more per person. When it boils down to it we could have gone across the street to J.Alexanders, had much better service, a cheaper bill and comparable food.  I have only one gripe with the food, sandy scallops which is unacceptable given the price point and the restaurant's positioning in the market. All in all, I would never return or recommend the restaurant given the experience.

The filet special I had was excellent, as was the calamari.  I was a lot less impressed with the service than I had expected.  There was a couple next to us, teenagers most likely with mom and dad's credit card, that were sat down and not talked to for over 20 minutes.  I felt bad for them, especially since we weren't really hidden away.  There were plenty of waiters coming and going from all around them.  Our waiter was distant, and a little awkward, but it was decent.  The food was great, only complaint is the service.
