Sometimes, you need to get away.  And you can't afford a vacation.  That's when it's good to know that places like the Raulston Arboretum are out there.  It's a nice, quiet spot with plenty of NC State's ag school's personal nature strewn about in a beautiful arrangement.  It's not hard to find a nice place to sit down and pretend that the world outside can't get in at you.  At least for the duration of a good, long read.

If you also happen to enjoy horticulture (jeez, I hope I'm using that word correctly), then this will also dazzle the pants off of you.  They've got some things here that even a layman such as myself, who can't do much with plants other than ask if they're edible or note that they're pretty, can walk away impressed with.

For the most part, though, I can't think of a better reason to go here than to just ignore everything else for a while.  If you happen to catch me there, please don't disturb me with requests for an autograph ("Are you that guy from Yelp?"  Yeah, I get that all the time.).  This is my me time.

Great place for a walk - even in winter.

I'm no horticulturalist (I could make a plastic plant wither) but I am a fan of natural splendor and this place's got it in spades. I was dazzled by the combination of landscaping and sheer diversity of species; it's an impressive effort. Theres It's free to all, it's spacious and accommodating with lots of gazebos and patheways. If you have pollen allergies you will probably explode at the door during the spring, but otherwise it's a great, relaxing way to spend a few hours communing with nature (engineered nature, but nature nonetheless).

this place is absolutely beautiful! a couple of friends of mine had their wedding here last june and while they had to pick the hottest day of the year so far and the area with the least amount of shade, it was definitely a gorgeous wedding nonetheless. I got there early (i hadn't known how long it would take me to get there)- actually before anyone else arrived so i wandered around the gardens. I'm not much for gardening, but i do love seeing a perfectly landscaped area. Their wedding photos were done outside and were absolutely beautiful, plus they were also able to hold their reception there as well which made it nice and convenient for everyone. just one thing... i wouldn't advise wearing heels to walk around here like i did- they have pathways in most places but there are a few areas that didn't and i kept sinking into the ground! lol.

This is a great way to spend the afternoon. Even if you are not particularly interested in gardening, there are many beautiful areas in the arboretum to relax, read, or just pass the time. There are plenty of benches scattered throughout the garden. Best of all, it is free!
