Wow. Everything in Aspen closes at 9. So when I had a terrible craving for apple pie at 10pm, I figured I was so screwed.
I seriously have the best boyfriend ever because he called and looked up every restaurant possible that could be open serving desserts! Unfortunately every placed we looked up was either closed or didn't have apple pie. I gave up and decided we should just adventure out and grab ANY dessert since it was already 11pm. Our receptionist at the Hotel Recommended J Bar.
And wow...can you believe when we got there they were serving APPLE PIE?!!! We didn't even know and we were estatic. What a great way to end the night :)
Thank you J Bar! -

The second night in Aspen we came into J Bar thinking it was the Library. Whoops.
J Bar and the Library are two very different bars that are very close to one another. The Library has house cocktails/fancy lounge chairs and the J Bar is, well, more of an ordinary bar.
My husband ordered a Sazerac and he found it to be just OK. I ordered a coffee because I was fighting post-hot-tub-snoozies. It was fine.
This is a good place to grab a beer and a burger, but if you are looking for unique cocktails/wine/etc I would head over to the Library instead. -

i know we're in colorado, but when a patron asks for a water, or to put xgames on during x games, u should probably do so, especially when there's three people in the bar....the daytime bartender is a space cadet...small town thinking, small town service...and the whole are u a local question?? if i was i get a discount and if im not u charge me more?? thats called discriminating...u should know ur locals and take care of them...no wonder why xgames is ditching this town...all i heard from the locals in there was the traffic and this weekend and gay weekend sucks....well guess what u fools, u wont have to worry about it anymore and ull be begging for the tourists to come back....idiots...

This place has been an aspen locals joint for decades. I recommend you belly up to the bar and get a few cocktails and a burger. Also try the Aspen Crud.

I LOVE the J Bar. Don't expect the Ritz, it's old town Aspen ambiance. And somehow, us touristas make it even more interesting and colorful. You'll almost always see the town drunk (aka the regular) at the end of the bar, talking to the bar tender or trying to rope others into conversation. They will serve you most anything that can be had in the regular restaurant. the Caesar salad is as good as it gets! It is a classic bar and part of the hotel which is a Rock Resorts entity. We've never had bad service, and if we did, we'd complain. Rock is know for it's service oriented culture. We frequent the Santa Fe Rock Resort.
Cocktails are very reasonably priced. It is a great place to get a booth and watch the crowd. Only complaint is the seats are soooo uncomfortable. -

I'm not a prime rib connoisseur, but I had the prime rib sandwich there and holy cow was it good.
We chose this place for pre night drinks and possibly dinner for our first night in Aspen for our Honeymoon. It was a short walk from our hotel, that was a huge plus, and the pictures online made it look really cool and vintage.
We got in and sat down right away, it wasn't a huge place but plenty of seating. There were some strange peoples in there but you could tell they were local, so I guess when you find locals hanging out at a place then you know your on to something.
The decor was really cool and like I said, the prime rib sandwich, delish. I don't think it's a menu item I think it was just a special, but they do have prime rib on the menu. -

J-Bar has definitely gone downhill the last couple of years. We went for lunch; they messed up our orders, and when they came, the food was mediocre. It still has a nice place for a casual lunch, but not worth it. There are too many better choices in town. Won't be going again.

I went to Aspen for a three day mini vacay and stayed at the Hotel Jerome. Attached to it is the J-Bar. After talking to the front desk about having a nice dinner they recommended a few places as well as the J Bar. Having decided to give it a shot because we were starving as well as being 139 feet away, that seemed like the best option. The place has its charm and it was a slow night, so it was quiet and comfortable. The appetizer was fried calamari. Sprinkle in some diced olives and relish and you have a common dish kicked up a notch. Good portion too. I had the Lamb for my main course, my girlfriend the salmon. The lamb was very good, a little too fatty. Fat is flavor and I love me some flavor but it was a bit too much even for me. When your slicing off some meat and all you get is a glob of fat in your mouth, that's a bit too much. The side that accompanied my dish however was abysmal. Some sort of bean mush that didn't look or taste good at all. I would've been over the moon if they just paired it with mashed potatoes or some steamed veggies. It was enough to ruin the whole dish. It looked like bean mush or pig slop. I've never actually seen pig slop and a quick Google search turned up short, but if I had to imagine what pig slop looked like it would be this. As far as the salmon dish went the portion was tiny. Imagine a 4 x 4 inch piece. The side dish was a couscous like concoction that was tasty.. until they drizzled a vinaigrette over it that overpowered everything. So grand total for everything? One appetizer, two main courses with water + tip $104. I understand this is Aspen, but the quality and taste doesn't justify the price even with the geographical location under consideration.

PSSSsssttttt $2 PBRs!
Great wings too!
Get drunk at happy hour and scare the tourists.
Why 3 Stars? TERRIBLE service w/ a few exceptions. Oh, and they got rid of the best Steak Sandwich ever. That used to get me into the place.
Tip: Order the PBR and when they don't have it (typical) lobby to get your beer at PBR prices. -

We waited over 40 minutes for our food and the place only had 1 other table occupied! Also two of us had grilled cheese with an unremarkable tomato soup; one had a Philly cheesesteak that needed ketchup it was so dry (embarassing to even call it a Philly), and one had horrible chicken noodle soup.

Came here for drinks before heading out to dinner. I really like the atmosphere and decor of this place. That old saloon feel really works in this place and the bar is beautifully crafted. Had a lovely conversation with the British couple next to us. All and all a good time. However had to dock a star for service though. The bartender was nice, but when someone ordered a scotch he said "you do realize that cost $___." We were a little taken back to say the least ...

I'm not sure if food just taste better with the elevation, or in Colorado in general, I really liked this place. I had the burger with pepper jack cheese. It was one of the best burgers I've ever ate!

I only give it 2 stars because not only I did not try the food but when I was brought here, the place was totally empty. We did have some drinks at the bar. The decor was cool, the bartender was nice and I honestly don't remember the music. It might have been too slow. I don't know.
It still is a historic bar and I heard good things about it but I didn't fully experience the "real thing" here (ambiance, food, music...etc) -

Had a great time at the J Bar in Hotel Jerome. Happy hour with Matt the bartender was a blast. Very entertaining. Bloody Marys are superb. I thought the service was great considering he worked the whole bar himself.

Is there an option for zero stars? This place sucked. I guess I'm not "amused" by terrible service, which it defintely was. The seating is terrible, too. Plus it's crawling with tourists who look like tourists complete with "Aspen" sweatshirts, shorts, and tanktops. Not the proper attire for a so-called swanky joint.
