This is a nice, reasonably priced place for breakfast. We showed up at 9:30 and had no problem just walking in and sitting down.

One of the pluses is that they serve Stumptown Coffee. Another is that they have a breakfast burrito on the menu.

I think, from my experience with the breakfast burrito and a friends with a scramble, that they slightly under season their food.

Overall it was good and I would come for breakfast again.

J&M's Cafe is true breakfast perfection. We were lucky enough to squeeze in on a Saturday morning right before the wait started.

The breakfast was right on- fresh, delicious and comforting all at the same time. Coffee, like almost everywhere, was Stumptown and free flowing and the orange juice was organic and freshly squeezed.

The decor was laid back and hip, I especially loved the metal antler/tree thing where you could choose your own coffee mug from an assortment that appeared to have been acquired during a major thrift store clearance. Our service was great- attentive without being intrusive.

The only downside is that this is a cash only establishment, but they do have an ATM on-site.

This is the kind of place I would go to every morning for breakfast if I lived about 2,030 miles closer.  It's like going to your best friend's for some good company where you can vege.  It's interesting, real and fun.  The food is yummy and the service is friendly.  I love the "pick your own coffee mug" coffee.  J&M Cafe is one of those few wide open spaces that I find comfortable - its casual industrial feel is snazzy and hip without being over-the-top snobby trendy.

The food was good, the coffee is help-yourself, but they don't take credit cards. Cash and check only.

minus one star for not having a morning cocktail menu.

The ONE TIME i wanted a mimosa...

This is my favorite week day breakfast spot.  Low key industrial warm feel and the service is usually very friendly and laid back.

The breakfast burrito is a usual favorite of mine and the scrambles are fab.  Everything is fresh and as healthy as a well stocked breakfast plate can be.

Crowd is unpretentious which is very welcoming these days in PDX.  You see a little of everything and being from NYC, I love the diversity of this place.  It's not NW 23 wannabe chic or urban bullshit...it just is a solid find that I love to frequent weekly.  it's my weekly treat when I need a large table, free-flowing coffee (and I love choosing my coffee cup), and a nice place to do some paperwork and realize this is one of the best places to sit back and enjoy.

Oh, the Monday lovely waitperson with the great smile is one of the best waitresses in town.

I hear weekends are different.  Too busy and not the same ambiance as the weekday experience.  That's all good.  I'll keep to my weekday schedule and let the masses fight it out on the weekend.

My first dining experience in Portland.

I was educated about Portland's resistance to accepting credit cards.

I was also educated about the fact that fresh squeezed juice can come out of sealed bottles (more about that in my review of the Daily Cafe).

Get your own coffee out of a mug of your choice from the mug tree. Quaint. Brick walls. Good art.

Pumpkin bread wasn't great. And I love pumpkin everything.

Breakfast was fine. Nothing spectacular. Not a lot of choices.

For me, and my experience at this spot, the company was the best part.

This is a really good breakfast restaurant. It's not my first choice--that would be Jam's or Cup and Saucer--but it is often less crowded here and it is one of my friend's favorite restaurants so I come here a lot. It is definitely a good option to know about, because finding somewhere to eat breakfast on a Saturday morning is not always an easy task. They don't take credit cards but they do have an atm machine inside.

I love this place. It's almost never crowded, has a great, low-key vibe, and the food has been consistently good every time I've been there. The place itself has nice brick walls with plenty of light, always a plus in Portland.

Food wise, I've had eggs each visit, just differently done. They are not greasy, and I like the selection choices, plenty of veggies and other things to add in. I hear the coffee is good (I don't drink it, so this second hand info).

Service is consistently good.

We went to J&M's based on the lyrical review by Jenny H. and were not disappointed.  Loved the mug rack.  Loved the self-serve coffee and water.  Loved the baguette-slices french toast.  Loved the special scramble.  Loved the berries on the side.  Loved the hamburger key ring to the men's room.  (OK, I did not love the hamburger key ring, but my son got a kick out of it.)

We went on Monday, so did not face any crowds, but would have waited in a line for such a killer breakfast.

A favorite breakfast spot.  Excellent, simple meals prepared fresh.

Try the J&M, heck take the whole family.  This family friendly breakfast spot is one of my favorites.  They prepare a simple yet surprisingly tasty set of meals.  The self-serve coffee bar is one of my favorite parts.  Walk right up, grab a cup off the tree and serve yourself.  Grab a spoon from the clean cup and stir in just the right amount of sugar and cream.  Delicious....

With countless breakfast and brunch venues dotting the neighborhoods of Southeast, I was surprised I had never heard of J+M.  Just off of close-in East Burnside, J+M is a good bet for standard Portland breakfast fare.  Good Stumptown Coffee served up with an appetizing selection of scrambles, pancakes, and delectable specials.  I was sorry I had overlooked it!

J+M is not only a breakfast spot; it also happens to be my and my husband's first initials. I used to take this as a cosmic sign that J+M must be my favorite breakfast spot, and fortunately I have not had reason yet to doubt the cosmic forces. The menu is straightforward with specials thrown in like curveballs (beyond the regular deeeelicious egg scrambles, lox plate and waffles, J+M wows you with fresh berry-related fixins and benedicts and fancy dressed up pancakes). The coffee is dependable Stumptown and tastes even better when getting to choose your own mug from the metal mug tree I covet and hope to have for my own kitchen some day. The service has always been friendly and adorable. And even though there tends to be a wait on the weekends, you can take comfort in getting to glare at a consistently handsome bedheaded dining population (man, why is Portland so damn cute?) until a table opens up. J+M: True Love Forever.

My friends and I used to come here nearly every weekend.  Along with Juniors, Helser's, and Mother's, J & M is one of my favorite breakfast spots in PDX.  If you are a savory breakfast enthusiast, you would probably love J & M.  But if you're more of a pancakes/french toast type, you'll be out of luck.  J & M does a really good job with egg dishes and breakfast meats (you must try the crabcake benedict if it's on the specials board).  They also serve one of the best bagel and lox platters on the West Coast.  Oh, and they have self-serve Stumptown coffee...how Portland is that?!

If you go to J & M, don't forget to bring cash, they don't accept plastic.
