10 reviews for J. Alexander's
Came here for the first time last weekend for a girls night, and all of us couldn't have been happier. We feasted on 2 salads, three steaks, a pork tenderloin and THE most decadent chocolate cake I have EVER had (and I've had many), and came out barely over a hundred bucks. For the quality of the food and service, as well as the huge portion sizes and overall ambiance, I couldn't believe it. I will definitely be headed back here the next time I'm in town.
One thing to note: J Alexander's doesn't take reservations. But they do have a 'call ahead service,' where if you call 20-30 minutes before you arrive they'll set a table aside. The best time to come is probably between 5-6, this is when we arrived and we had no wait whatsoever. But by the time we left around 8, the waiting room was packed.
Often ignored, I feel that this is possibly one of Tampa's finest restaurants. Alexander's has been a mainstay on Dale Mabry since I have been in Tampa. We had lunch there today for my wife's birthday as this is one her favorites, even above Bern's or Charley's. Menu prices are also more reasonable than other higher end restaurants.
Now I am no vegetarian, not by a long shot, but when I go to this restaurant I always get the Veggie plate. It is simply incredible. Today I had crisp garlic sauteed green beans, done to perfection and topped with sliced almonds, a delicious homemade macaroni and cheese, a delectable baked potato, not pithy, done perfectly and topped with all my favorites and for the grand finale, a rice and orzo combination that is simply one of the best vegetable dishes I have ever encountered.
Also ordered at our table, the fillet Mignon, juicy, tasty and much larger than the average steak house, a blue cheese burger, a special order, served with delectable thin sliced fries (do not be afraid to ask, they will make anything you like) and the chicken sandwich, 2 juicy chicken patties served on a fresh grilled bun.
Dinner Tues 2/2 not much of an appetizer selection so we started with the soup, it was good, just soup. Hubby ordered the steak and fries ($21) ordered medium rare came out more toward medium but it's a thin cut of steak so not surprised. It was very good and had a nice smokey taste to it. I had the ahi tuna with ginger glaze, potatos and slaw ($26) was good, nothing great, for that price I expected it to be really good. The salad dressings were very good and you could tell they were homemade. The service was very good as well. The drinks perfectly poured. All in all a good night, but I'm not in a hurry to return, their menu just didn't impress me that much. A lot of items you could make or get everyday anywhere just with better service and a nice atmosphere. Definitely worth at least one try though.
Went here beofre hitting up Whole Foods. The staff was trained to deliver top notch service. We had something to drink within seconds of being seated.
I usually drink ice water with lemon at lunch (bring on the cocktails at dinner!) and mine came with a big hearty wedge of lemon not one of those paper thin slices that don't contain juice anymore. This I appreciated.
I had the French Dip sandwich and it's probably one of the best I have ever had! The bread was delicious and the shaved prime rib was cooked perfectly to medium rare. The au jus tasted homemade and not one of those powder mixes. It was large, I could not eat the whole thing, but I tried! Truly it was a really good sandwich.
My husband ordered the prime rib sandwich add cheese and the waitress pointed out that the bun was served on the side and it's not really very easy to eat as a sandwich, which she assumed he wanted to do from the add cheese request. I always appreciate when severs navigate you in the right direction.
Neither on of us had the fries, I got smashed potateos and he got the coleslaw. The coleslaw was very good, the smashed potato was just average. It was just that, a smashed potato, no butter or seasoning. It was hot though.
I saw a couple of desserts on the way out and they were HUGE! They looked very good though. In fact all of the food that I saw come out of the kitchen looked good.
It would be really easy to run up quite a tab here though. Cocktails start at $10.00, wine looked expennsive and there were $26.00 crab cakes on the menu. But for a couple of excellent sandwiches and a glass of iced tea it was $32.00. I'd pay that anyday for the quality of the food.
I will defenitely be back!
I love J. Alexander's. I love their location (Dale Mabry & I275). I love the food. I love the service. I love the atmosphere. I love the steak. I love the mac & cheese. I love the tile in the women's bathroom. I'm struggling to think of something I don't love about this place. OK. I don't like their shoe-sting style fries... but other than that the place is flawless.
My husband and I aren't wealthy people nor are we comfortable with the high-hat attitude some "up-scale" restaurants seem to have. This being said, that doesn't mean that we don't sometimes want to have a really nice dinner at a nice place... we just don't want to have spend a ton of money ordering fancy food off of an À la carte menu at a restaurant with a dress code.
J. Alexander's is sort of a casually-upscale.
This is one of those restaurants where you could show up all decked out, order a few top-shelf cocktails, an appetizer, salads, two steak dinners and find out that you've dropped a couple hundred bucks... But you could also show up in jeans and tee-shirts, order a couple of cokes and two great sandwiches and get out for well under $30. In either case you wouldn't look out of place.
J. Alexander's menu has a really varied selection of foods - they call it "contemporary American". A quick list of a few items: Asian Ahi Tuna Salad $16, Prime Rib Sandwich $16, Barbecue Danish Baby Back Ribs $22, Uncle Jack's Chicken Finger Platter $13 & Veggie Burger $9. The prices are higher than you would see at most casual restaurants (it's not Applebee's), but the quality of the food and service are well worth the price (it's defiantly not Applebee's).
My personal suggestions:
The Vegetable Plate $12: It's exactly how it sounds- just a plate piled with your choice of sides and they don't necessarily have to be veggies. I always get the mac & chesse, tomatoes, broccoli and creamed spinach when they have it. The serving sizes are quite large and I usually end up taking home more than enough to add to omelet's the next morning.
Steak Brazzo$25: its just effing ridiculously delicious. Ri-DIC-u-lous.
Alex's House Salad $4: It's called a "side salad" but I don't buy it... It's huge. Get a side of Not Your Ordinary Mac & Cheese and you've got a meal.
And check out the tile in the women's bathroom. It's great.
we had a great time at this restaraunt. the food was great. I love the food. The service was great.
We like this restaurant because they have a lot of good basic dishes. They usually have some nice fresh fish choices as well. Their salads are huge and tasty. Their rice pilaf is also a great side dish. They have a great turkey burger that I like to order. Overall, it's a good place to eat when you want to eat some typical American food. The service is always really good too.

I know it is a chain but I think it is one of the better steak places in Tampa that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I have eaten all the fancy places; Bern's, Ruth's Chris, Capitol Grille and Charlie's. I think they use the same grade of meat as all the big hitters and are about $10 a piece cheaper. The service is excellent. I will say the place is noisier than I prefer and there is a better chance of hearing a crying baby but if a little noise doesn't bother you this is a good place to go. There is an outdoor patio but why would you want to look at a parking lot?
Awesome. Everything on the menu is great, and the service is impeccable.
