I eat a large amount of Salmon. Most of it is nowhere near as good as Ixia's. I will just say that the poached Salmon I had was in the top 5% compared to other places I eat.
The decor is creative and well put together. The waitstaff was skilled, if a little bit meddling. The cocktails are overpriced, and not as good as the food.
In spite of those things, I would easily visit this establishment again
I have to say..I do like sparkles.
And Ixia is very sparkly.
Lot of hanging lights, pretty cloth, etc.
Came here for drinks after dinner.
We arrived pretty late (12 something) and it was pretty empty.
Service was quick and the bartenders were very nice..but I'm just not sure $13-15 cocktails are really worth my time here!
Have to come back and try some food, but seems like they're trying a little too hard to create an eclectic lounge vibe.
Went here for my birthday. It wasn't cheap, but was worth it for a special occasion. The decor is really out there - you'll have to go to truly understand. My mom tells me that it has gotten stranger over time. The astroturf on the bathroom stalls may have been a bit much, but it was definitely an interesting touch.
I had the braised duck, which was quite good. the entrees are around $30, which is maybe a bit pricey, but I guess that makes it worth it. They had a good cocktail list, although we had wine, so I didn't have a chance to try any.
The dessert I had was some sort of chocolate cake with a chocolate sorbet. It was pretty good, although not quite as strong as the entree.
Overall, a nice meal, and well presented. The service was good. I would definitely come back.
I really did like this place, don't take my rating wrong. but it didn't wow me. It was fairly good food with interesting decor but not really a ton more than that.
Me and my boyfriend had decided to have an earlier dinner (5pm) before driving all the way back to Jersey and when we got there it was dead. Didn't mind this at all, it can actually be kind of nice, but it was odd to us that the waitress insisted he remove his hat (I understand its a "higher" class restaurant but of the dozens of restaurants we've been to that are "higher" class, this is the first to ask him this).
Moving on to the actual food..
The bread they bring you is amazing I must say, in fact it was maybe my favorite bread at a restaurant so far, and its served warm with a delightful pesto and drizzled with olive oil.
Our entree's were fairly basic (He had the steak, and I had the chicken). The steak, however, he had asked for medium-well and got more of a medium, medium-rare. From working with chef's I know it is very difficult to tell temperature in steaks, and occasionally you get a just very bloody piece of meat, but it was quite underdone, although he said it was edible and fairly good. anyway-if you get the steak, just say well done!
The chicken was good, nothing too exciting, but it did come with lemon shavings on the side that added a delightful tartness when paired with the chicken. The asparagus that I had gotten on the side had a delightful crunch to it without being undercooked, which was great.
Unfortunately I cannot give any opinion on dessert. We were very disappointed by their dessert menu. I mean, what restaurant in their right mind doesn't have a chocolate dessert on their menu?
all in all it was nice and the manager came up to check on us once or twice which was refreshing to see.
Very cool atmosphere here. The drink menu is solid and the food is up to par. We got the scallops (very good), crabcakes (also very good, but not as good as Faidleys), the baby octopus app (meh, it was too tough and not that great) and the cheese trio for dessert (awesome).
Also, don't forget to checkout the bathrooms, heh, kinda cool
Fancy! Some fun mixed drinks, striking decor with admirable attention to detail, a good time.
When I first moved here, I didn't think much of it because the outside looks dark. So I assumed that it is closed or something. However, when my friends decide to go there for a ladies' night, oh man, am I in for a surprise!
The decor there is very chic. The blue walls stand out, and there are eclectic pieces of furniture in the back that keep you looking around. The dining area is very classy too, and occasionally there are live jazz bands playing.
I usually go there for martinis, and they are simply amazing! My favorites are Pink Panther, Blue Buddha, Ruby Red, and Midnight Mimosa. If my wallet is a little bigger, then I would definitely go for the food. I went for Restaurant Week, and the food was great!
I would definitely go there for a laidback but classy night out (given I have enough money to spend for drinks and such).
Beautiful decor and amazing cocktails! I think i would come here just for their specialty drink list. Everything was original and tasty. We went on a Friday night which was live jazz night. Surprisingly, the place never filled up, which was a shame because the ambiance and personality of the place is a rare find in Baltimore. Very LA/NYish (yes, it's a new adjective! =P )
definitely pricey, but for a special night out or a night to feel special, check out iXia.
way. too. pricy.
steaks were thinnn - im talking anorexic cows here
if you must go -
just get the mac and cheese that everyone is talking about.
enjoy the zany decor (via astroturf bathroom stalls)
otherwise - avoid
Okay, I am embarassed to admit that it has taken me so long to check out Ixia. Once I got there and saw how beautiful the decor is, I felt like I've really been missing out. There are so many big, comfy chairs and sofas, not to mention bar stools, that finding a place to sit is not a challenge. The light fixtures, artwork, and upholstery make for a very interesting and cozy theme.
The speciality coctail list is ultra yummy, but dangerous. After a fruity punch served in a glass the size of my head, my common sense evaporated and I moved on to scotch - not a good idea, of course.
The music was a good mix of loungy downtempo and popular songs by artists similar to and including Justin Timberlake.
I'm actually shocked that this isn't a popular locals haunt, like Brewer's Art. I was there with a small group of friends, so didn't really check out the rest of the crowd, but I'm sure if they were annoying, I would have noticed. My fear is that if more people don't head out to Ixia, it will go out of business.
Please please give it a go!
After having experienced both the blind tasting menu on Wednesday and the grand tasting menu on Thursday, I have experienced gastronomic nirvana. Each dish was not only beautifully presented but breathtaking. The lobster was cooked to perfection with a citrus butter and edamame paste. Foie Gras hit the nail as once again, from Hudson Valley it is duck Foie that melts like butter in you mouth each bite.
For the next two weeks you can still eat the Hudson Valley Foie Gras (which is the best in the city IMHO) and starting the third week of September Ixia will change to its Fall Menu.
The menu is exceptional and changes seasonally (winter spring summer and fall) providing our palates with the freshest ingredients. The third week of September Ixia will be changing from summer to Fall and creating new experiences for your palate pleasure.
Not many people are aware that on Saturdays and Fridays the bar area offers a a liquid nitrogen cocktail menu- which is a real treat and exemplifies the creativity of Ixia.
I've been meaning to go to Ixia for years based on friends' glowing reviews...and I'm so glad I finally did. This place scores high in so many ways:
First impressions -- The decor is amazingly creative...whimsical (like its sister restaurant, the Papermoon Diner) yet somehow much more upscale and less art school dropout. Do yourself a favor and check out the bathrooms...wow.
Food -- How many places still serve amuse bushes? Ixia. (What an awesome surprise.) How many places cook your meat exactly right? Ixia. And how many restaurants in this day and age actually offer multiple unique desserts? Ixia! Yum yum.
Service -- For such a modern-looking restaurant, Ixia is incredibly old school when it comes to service. The multiple servers attending our table saw to every detail before we even thought of them. Plus, they do this without being snooty. Yay!
As expected, with great service and food comes a slightly larger bill...but for a special night out on the town, Ixia serves the purpose and then some.
This is a beautiful restaurant -- more towards funky/eclectic than elegant. I've never seen such detail with a restaurant's decor - all the way down to the bathrooms. I felt like I was on the set of Moulin Rouge or something.
Ixia is fantastic for a GNO (girls' night out. Trust me - the acronym is making its way around) or just a unique dining/drinking experience. The bar ROCKS because there's plenty of room to sit - at the bar and on couches. It brings out a cool crowd (20s and 30s), except for the weird scientist guys that cornered me & my friends on our GNO! =\ I don't think they frequent Ixia often, so don't be afraid.
My experience at Ixia is limited to the bar, but I've heard fantastic things about the food.
Ixia also looks like a great place for a special occasion. They have a second floor tier kind of thing that is separate from the entire rest of the restaurant - perfect for a private party??
The big X sign caught our attention as we walked down the street from the Washington monument. As usual, the menu was on the window for easy inspection. At the time though, the restaurant was not open. One of the waiters was fixing or arranging some stuff for the night and seeing our curious look at the menu, told us they would open at 5pm for dinner.
We came back at 8pm. Were greeted by a very pleasant and warm hostess who took us to our table. I have say from the time we walked in i felt we were at a special place. Beautiful and fun decor with white curtains and pop paintings on the walls. Seats and tables are white. It so happened that the waiter who greeted us earlier in the day was the one to serve our table. Very cordial and helpful with the food and wine decisions.
I think at this point in my eating life i have become quite adventurous with my selections. I'm happy for that as it allows me to try new and exciting items in the menu. Ixia had many delectable and culinary combinations i had not considered before. While i was going through my usual indecisions as many items looked good. We were presented with the chef's tasting menu option. As it happens, Thursday is Tasting menu day. Wednesday is blind menu day.
We agreed with the tasting menu with wine pairing. Wow. I have not been impressed or amused much by food lately, but this was something. The kind waiter in his friendly conversation asked us if we were there for any special occasion. We were not celebrating much but the whim of going away, and walking into an interesting restaurant. Or so we realized while we were there.
All the dishes served were from excellent, amazing or good. Butter fish on sake marinated cucumbers, pork loin with a side of apple slaw. Rock fish on a bed of corn and lobster foi gras filled figs ... it was all very good. Oh, yes, the fillet Mignon. We walked out very satisfied and amazed at the good stuff on the table.
The service, the setup, decor and all was great! I have to admit that while i love eating good, i have been to other places that have similar looks, as in trying to look too good, and ostentatious, this one seemed at first one of those. But like every good artist if you are good, you are allowed some level of eccentricity. Ixia did it for me. It looked great, it tasted amazing and it made us feel even better.
Atmosphere is amazing and martinis are great. Have only been here for private parties so I'm not sure about the crowd. This is where gossip girl would come in Baltimore
My favorite place for drinks in Baltimore. The food is beautiful, but tasteless. The rotating martini bar always have original selections. The bartenders are helpful and courteous. You can always ask them for things off the menu as well. The decor is an eclectic and stylish mix. This is as chic as Baltimore gets.
Went here last night and had a great time. It is moderately priced... 177 for 5 course, bottle of wine, and 20% tip. Overall the price was definitely worth it. The service was great with the exception of our waiter being very soft spoken.
We had an issue with the Valet as the Valet driver drove my car up on to the curb but the management quickly handled the issues
The Food was great and well presented. A lot of variety and different flavors. We had the Tuna and Scallops for entrees, both were well prepared and the risotto the came with the Scallops was awesome.
All in all a great place, one of a kind in Baltimore. We will be going back
i have to be honest - i heard bad things about Ixia. i couldn't believe after looking at the menu and website though how it could have such a bad reputation. i took a chance and hinted at the bf that it was my top choice for valentine's day dinner.
i could not have asked for a better place to spend my valentine's day! when we pulled up, the entire sidewalk had been covered in red rose petals and a red carpet was laid out to enter the restaurant.
the decor is amazing and it really looks like the pictures that they have on their website. i have never been to such a nice restaurant in baltimore and never thought a place like this could be found here.
the food is great - we had mussels, i had salmon, he had steak. get the carrot cake for dessert if they have it on the menu (big + for not having raisins in it!!)
service is wonderful - everyone was super attentive and accommodating even on such a busy night like valentine's day. there was no rush to turn over tables and we were able to sit there for 3 hours sipping on wine and enjoying ourselves.
only gripe was that i wasn't crazy about the martini list for the day, but i know that they alternate it regularly, which gives me a great excuse to go back!!
hands down, i have to say i think its the best restaurant ive been to in baltimore. do yourself a favor and goooo
Love this place! The decor is amazing! The drinks are great. The food is very very very good.
I went here first for dinner with my mom before a show and both of us enjoyed our meals greatly. The service is very good, what you would expect in an upscale restaurant. We both ordered appetizers, entrees and desserts and were delighted with all. Not to mention the amuse bouche that was served with our drinks. I've been back a couple of times and never am I disappointed.
They have a great chef's tasting menu on Wednesdays, $55/$80(with wine).
Wow. Ixia is a phenomenal find. If you're from DC and getting tired of the same restaurants, same scene, long wait - the drive is worth it. If you're from Baltimore - short drive, no excuses. I work in Baltimore on occasion, but never really gave the local fare much thought. Good thing I pulled it together.
The restaurant has a nice, open feel with a lounge in the background. Specialty drink list consisted mainly of martinis and mojitos. My friends and I had the tasting menu which consisted of 6 courses (small/medium sized plates ) that covered the gamut from rockfish to fillet to duck.
The meal was good overall, a couple of courses were only so-so (swordfish a bit tough, and pineapple upside down cake was on the dry side). Despite that, very strong points for a unique and balanced menu that was reasonably priced ($69 for 6 courses - take that DC).
this nice little restaurant, situated a block away south of the monument, offers a really nice dinner menu. they also have some extremely comfortable couches in the lounge area. either before or after dining, goto the bar and ask for the martini list, i recommend to try all of them
updated: 9/11
appetizers are available till pretty late, but you HAVE TO try the lobster mac&cheese, it's soooooooooooooooo goooooooooooooooooooood
I've been meaning to go here for quite some time. The inside of this place is nothing short of spectacular. It feels like you're entering the set of some fantastic utopian-future movie. The drinks are also very unique. One of the "bartenders" is a chemistry student at Hopkins whose chief ingredient in his cocktails is liquid nitrogen. I had a Magic Mojito. Very tasty.
I can't imagine anything more pretentious than this place. The food came nowhere near to justifying the level of snobbery.
This is a really fun place to go. We have been a few times for special events. (Birthday and Anniversary) The decor is out there. For dinner, ask to be seated in the front of the restaurant. You can look out on the street plus check the rest of the restaurant out. Food is wonderful. I love the food, but service has been a little lacking the last time we went here. The waiter gave us a couple of complimentary glasses of champagne, but end up charging us and then arguing about it. In addition, he served my wife the wrong dinner and we had to wait twenty minutes for hers to appear. A call to the restaurant's owner the following Monday, corrected the issue with a complimentary dinner and wine.
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Baltimore! The atmosphere is very cool and not at all stuffy or pretentious. Make sure you have a drink before you get seated for dinner. The drinks are great but the lounge area is even better. The perfect place to relax on a couch, take in the cool atmosphere and enjoy yourself. Once you get to the table things get even better. The service has always been outstanding. But the food is phenomenal!!! I've eaten at Ixia many times and have NEVER had one thing I didn't like. I've tried different entrees each time and they have all been fantastic. My ABSOLUTE favorite is the Grilled Baby Octopus Appetizer. However last time I was there in September the Chef took it off the menu for more seasonal offerings..... WHAT ARE YOU THINKING??? He did come out to apologize and laughed stating it was a favorite of many and he wold put it back on the menu in a couple of months. Never really got to try dessert because I've always eaten way too much. Ask for a table overlooking Charles Street to get the best experience however any table in the place is fine.
