I've never been to the factory, but the likka sto' a couple blocks from my house carries these amazing little round pieces of oatmeal and vanilla ice cream heaven. I've eaten one every night before going to bed for the past week -- I don't plan on stopping either! Someone better stop me before they gotta knock my bedroom walls down just to get me out a la Maury Povich.
P.S. - Mmm, I like the mint chocolate chip ones even better!
We get these at work all the time. The cookies are rock hard (and not in a good way) and more chafing than sandpaper. If you try to let them thaw, the ice cream melts before the cookie softens. What a conundrum. :(
I've never understood the fuss about these. I'd take a Klondike bar over one of these any day. Maybe if they weren't kept in our dry ice bins they'd be more manageable.

Like so many things, St. Hubbins insisted I try one of these the first time I came out to visit him in SF. He was intent on sharing all of his local loves with me (ok, let's be realistic here--MOST of them). For that reason alone, every time I see an It's-It, Jimi Hendrix's 'Are You Experienced' begins to play on my 'internal soundtrack'...
'If you can just get your mind together
Then come across to me
We'll hold hands an' then we'll watch the sunrise
From the bottom of the sea
But first, are you experienced?
Have you ever been experienced?
Well, I have'....
I'm feeling truly fortunate to have this sort of association with the whole 'virginal SF experience' of so many years ago. Because to be quite honest, while I really enjoyed my first It's-It, I just wasn't as over the moon about it as he was/still is. My guess is they're held in much higher esteem (by some) if you've consumed them during savage bouts of the munchies...so why don't we go ahead and cue up Jimi again:
'Ah, let me prove it to you...
Trumpets and violins I can hear in the distance
I think they're calling our names
Maybe now you can't hear them, but you will ha-ha
If you just take hold of my hand
Oh, but are you experienced?
Have you ever been experienced?
Not necessarily stoned, but beautiful...'
Oh yeah--more stars than Yelp has to offer. Thanks, Luv. And Jimi too. ; )

It's-It is an old school ice cream sandwich between two deliciously chewy and cinnamony oatmeal cookies and coated in dark chocolate. My favorite flavor is coffee! I used to eat these all the time after school in junior high.. Nowadays, these babies are hard to find and flavors are limited. But you can find them all at the It's-It Factory in Burlingame!! I thought I couldn't buy them in bulk because they would melt by the time I got home but they actually offer a cooler with dry ice for $7 more. Now, I can eat my coffee It's-It's whenever I feel like it!

Unfortunately I haven't been to the It's-It factory yet... but I see it whenever I drive down 101 and then I start craving it.
I can't believe I've never had their wonderful products growing up. I've only had my first It's-It a few years ago from a vending machine at work. I would see it there every week and kept wondering what the heck is an It's-It. What kind of name is that? One hot summer day I saw a bunch of people in the break room gulfing them down, and that's when I got to try it. I took a bite and got an orgasm in my mouth! It was freaking awesome!
Ok, I'm gonna drive over there right now! I hope they're still open... :)

I'm falling harder and harder with San Francisco each and every day. Whether it be with the amazing green spaces to the shear number of wild and wacky restaurants and bars. I'm constantly finding something around each and every corner that sets into concrete how good of a choice we made in moving to San Francisco. My guy and I realize that we have a whole new city to explore and make our own...When I didn't think it could get any better, I run into It's It Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches!
Two traditional oatmeal cookies sandwich a scoop of light as air Vanilla Ice Cream. The entire morsel is made even better with a dip in dark chocolate ganache!!
If this were a CL post..I'd be all over it..Sending pics of me in compromising postions saying stuff like.."I'd totally give you a rusty trombone.."..Although, I never, ever do that stuff..I would for an It's It Ice Cream Sandwich..
I hope to some day show someone new to this city an It's It Ice Cream sandwich. It just makes you seem like a local if you're in the know!

So I have an uncle that used to own an ice cream truck. No freaking joke, I am 100% stone cold serious.
We'd make trips here and i'd leave shoving a nice minty It's It in my happy little face.
NOTHING is better than a mint It's It when you're a bit toasted.. Actually, a Choco Taco is pretty damn good too..
ANYWAY.

I have a friend that lives internationally. She loves ice cream, she LOVES It's Its. Unfortunately, It's its are not available in Bulgaria or Hong Kong. I know, I called It's It Headquarters to find out and were told that they were not sold internationally. However, if I were to buy a case, they would gladly give me the dry ice and packaging materials to send them off myself. Excellent idea.
I called DHL and FedEx. Did you know that it cost $1M to ship a $30 box of It's its and some dry ice internationally? Sorry friend, you'll have to wait till you get back to the Bay to have the some of this ice cream cookie deliciousness.

Our office sucks...the AC in the building likes to turn itself off at 3pm.
Its not fun sitting at your desk with no AC....with a big window on your left and the sun laughing in your face...
But luckily...Its-it is only half a block a way...
if your lucky on those really hot days you can see about 15 chinese people running towards there with money in their hands...
thank you Its-it for being next door~ ^__________^
Hey you know what, It's-It? Fuck you.
Fuck you and your deliciousness, every single gooey little creamy bit of you. That's right. Fuck you hard.
Fuck you because I've dreamt about you.
Fuck you for penetrating my flawless diet of Diet Rockstar and cigarettes that has allowed me to lose 55 pounds this past year. Fuck you for doing it so easily, seducing me from the safety of your little frozen case at the corner store.
Fuck you, stop giving me that look.
Fuck you for leaving a trail of yourself down my chin, so I stumble back to my office looking like I just finished filming some weird foodie gay porn. Fuck you for making me want to refilm the scene where you melt on my fingertips. Fuck you because I want to touch myself just thinking about it.
Fuck you for every single moment of weakness in which you beckoned me with your creamy finger and purred in my ear, "Go on, lick me."
Fuck you. You don't lick back, you selfish asshole.

When I was a wee little middle-school attending lass in Sacramento, my mom would trustingly hand over a few dollars on a daily basis so I could be one of the "cool" kids and buy my lunch instead of brown-bagging it. Little did she know I went straight for the snack shop every lunch period, usually purchasing one of these fantastic mouthfuls of cookie and ice cream. Somehow I stayed skinny (and alert in class) despite my poor nutritional choices.
Much later (ie last year) I noticed the ingredients contained high-fructose corn syrup. Quel Horreur!!!! I promptly sent a distressed e-mail to the company. Less than a day later the response was that they had already stopped using HFCs and the only It's Its left with them were on the shelves. Thank you It's It for your prompt response and lovely HFC-free ice cream cookie sandwiches. They are delish!
My only complaint, and not enough reason to even think of docking stars, is their lack of factory tours. I tried to convince them otherwise, but they turned me away (yes, i pulled off the highway specifically with intent to tour the factory, i'm that obsessed).

As far as Sssshhhhh L.'s review. Um the oatmeal cookie is pretty much what makes the Its's-It. Without the cookie, it's not an It's-it. If you don't like the cookie, then you can't be a true fan. (Sorry Sssshhhhh L., but as a true fan, I couldn't keep my mouth shut)
Anyways, I love them. Cappucino is my favorite flavor, which I usually get from the vending machine at work. The quality of the ice cream and chocolate covering is good. And the oatmeal cookie is to die for....its soft and chewy and it kinda takes a little cinnamon-y.....yum! I wish they sold the various flavors in the grocery store, but I've only seen vanilla. Buying it in bulk from the factory will make me a fat person. Also their hours are a bit tough to make it to from the south bay M-F 9:00am - 3:30pm.
I love It's-It but I don't really like the Oatmeal cookie. I just bought the mint flavor one and the ice cream is soooo creamy and delish.
It's much cheaper to buy the ice cream in bulk at their factory than buying it at Safeway.
I munched into a Ice cream sammich provided by a friend of mine...
The bottom line, I'm stopping by after work.

It's good!
Just finished half of one sandwich and damn is it good! It's satisfying for sweet-tooths but not overly sweet leaving that sugary aftertaste!!!!
The icecream is super white and yummy and the dark chocolate shell is perfect as the slight bitterness of it rounds out the treat. The cookie is a bit crumbly, but it's an oatmeal cookie, which I say is not one of America's favorties..however I am happy to see it take center stage.
Can't believe I missed out on this for over a year! Yes, it's bad for you, but that's why it's called a treat dammit!
My ALL-TIME Ice Cream Snack!!!! I just love it when it's slightly melted, so that the chocolate shell makes a perfect harmony with the oatmeal cookies. Now that's hot. 'The Original' is top on the list, followed respectively, by 'Mint', then 'Cappuccino'.
I really should go to their HQ and buy meself a 24 pack box! I've been eyeing this little factory off the 101, and I was unaware that anyone could buy stuff here.

CONFESSION:
I've lived in the Bay Area my whole life, 24 years, and I never had an "It's-It" until last October. (No comments on my life of deprivation please)
It was a mint version, and it changed my life.
[True story]
P.S. I was addicted to Choco Tacos & Good Humor Chocolate Eclairs and I never deviated from my ice-cream-man-orders as a child, my deprivation was my own fault. Sadly I can't blame anyone but myself. But I wish I could.... Damn do I wish I could...

I haven't went to their facility yet, so I will base my review on their Ice Cream alone.
I have fond memories eating their It's-It sandwiches back when I was in junior high (do they even have junior high schools still?!?!). This was back in San Diego, so I know they're all over the place. Anyway, nothing hit the spot better than a nice big chocolate covered mint ice cream sandwich from the ice cream man! It made me feel like Eddie Murphy from Delirious:
I got some ice cream..... you can't have none..... cause your dad is an alcoholic........
But, I digress. I never was able to find them in SD for the last few years. And now, living in the Bay Area, imagine my surprise when I see a big huge box in Safeway. Ah, life is good!

Majority of these reviews are based on the It's-It products, but let's not forget, it's the MAIN OFFICE location you gotta be yelping as well. FYI- Burlingame is about 15-20 minute drive south of SF depending where you're coming from.
But why would you go to the It's-It main office? Unfortunately, no tours are offered to the public (booo). Although if you're a It's-It fan like me, it's worth the trip. You can go there to buy A CASE OF 24 IT'S-IT ICE CREAM PACKS FOR $17!!! You save some money or even make money (hint hint fundraisers and non-profits). You can find all the flavors and other brands like Big Daddys, Super Sundaes, Super Cones (12 per case) and Chips Its (12 per case).

I LOVE IT'S IT!!! I think if I had to choose one dessert to only eat for the rest of my life...I'd choose these. Well I'd get sick of them really fast I'm sure but I think the *decision* would be easy to choose an It's It as hands down my fave dessert option.
It's got all the elements of a fab goodie that you can enjoy forever. Oatmeal Cookies. Sandwiched Ice Cream. Dipped in Chocolate. It's a threefer!
I had these growing up and quite honestly I don't remember what they tasted like then, only that I loved them. And I have them every year, a few times a summer and they are just as good as I remember. Sometimes even BETTER depending on how desperately I have been thinking about them!
I have never been to the office in Burlingame but I did check out their online store, where you can actually purchase a case or ten of the little goodies...and they will ship them to you. I would imagine shipping and packing and all that is quite pricey, but if you are desperate you are DESPERATE.
It's also quite hard to find them locally sometimes....but I have a handful of local little places (typically 7 elevens but sometimes random independent corner stores carry them) that I know carries them on a regular basis. My one pet peeve (saving grace???) is that the grocery store carries them in packs of 3 but only in vanilla..which is my least favorite flavor, I mean is vanilla really even a flavor??
The local little liquor store that I can walk to in 10 minutes has vanilla of course but they also have MINT and CHOCOLATE. The elusive Cappucino is a hard one to find...not sure where to get it around here, but Mint is my fave and Capp is 2nd, so I can console myself with Mint in absence of Capp.
To anyone who is planning to visit the BayArea, seek out a place that sells these little treasures and try them. I'm sure you'll become a fan for life just like me.

Everytime I drive by Burlingame on 101 I look forward to seeing the It's-It sign. Even though it's responsible for ridiculous cravings, I still love it.
These are the best ice cream treat known to mankind, you know it and I know it.
I went on a private tour of the factory when I was younger, my Dad always had a way of slipping us in where we shouldn't be.... but here's a fun little fact for anyone who truly enjoys an It's-It: How many raisins do you think are in an It's-It??
Only ONE! Right in the center!
YAYAYAYAYAYA!!!! So much of my childhood embodied one thing:
Gazing at this sign every time I drove past the plant in Burligname, and being reminded of how I might need to jump out of the car at nearly 60 mph, or start a fit... or whine.... and nothing would ever get us to that plant. Being able to have one from your freezer or local shop was a treat, but I had dark obsessions about getting into that factory and seeing how it was all done.
It's it, and that's that.... but what's more than the deliciousness is how this place represented Wonka's factory to me. To this day I still haven't toured it. I need to get there soon, methinks. Will update you ASAP!

Love these things. Every time I eat one it reminds me of being a kid again and chasing the ice cream man down. Most of the time I was to broke to get an It's-It and would end up getting the 50 cent block of flavored ice known as an Ice Tickle but on special days my mom would shell out the extra 75 cents so I could get an It's-It (thanks mom your the best).
I wonder how much weight I would gain if I ate an It's It everyday. Because I think it would be worth it.

I love this ice cream sandwich! It has been one of my favorites since I was growing up. The chocolate shell just adds that perfect touch with those oatmeal cookies and vanilla (mint, cappuccino, strawberry, etc) ice cream in the middle. YUMMY!
I always wondered if you can actually tour or just buy a box from their factory. Maybe one day I will try to find out for myself....
I grew up with the It's-It, and "it" remains my favorite dessert. Really. Creme brulee, banana fosters, gelato and apple pie are all way up there on my list... but throw a Mint It's-It on the menu and I'll choose that every time.
I think It's-It still remains largely a Bay Area treat, so I hope the guys running this show know what they are doing and continue to stay in business.

Amazing, but it is actually hard to find these little nuggets of yumminess here in the south bay. Maybe when I was a kid I was right, So Cal starts at Fremont! I can get vanilla It's-Its at Happy Hollow, but I have been craving a mint one for about 10 years now. You see those nasty Toll House Ice cream cookie sandwiches at every 7-11 and porn packed liqueur store up and down the South Bay. But It's-It... No... They seem to be losing the corporate battle. Its a shame, the It's-It is a special thing. And I think this would be true even if they did not symbolize sitting on Lake Anza on a hot summer day covered in that semi mud sludge that filled that plop of water in Tilden, wasting away another sweet moment of my youth.
The hard and sweet facts:
* Where as the Toll House cookies are hard and hard to bite through, the crumbly oatmeal cookie on the It's-It is easy to bite through.
* Where the Toll House is WAY to sweet, the It's-It is surprisingly tame for an American sweet.
* It's-Its are made with Dark Chocolate rather then milk.
Oh... and the happy ending. On my way to pick up my wife I stopped for gas a mile away from the airport. And that little gas station (maybe because its across the freeway from the It's-It factory) had the whole selection of flavors. Question... I mean, with as long as I have been waiting there is nothing overly indulgent about eating 3 is there?

I should have written this a long time ago... I drive past every day on the way to work in Foster City. My company serves up their "ice cream" at the company picnics. Along with the potato salad that's been sitting in the sun, I pass...
It's It Ice Cream. "A San Francisco Tradition Since 1928" -- their trademark.
On their history page: "Maybe that's why It's It was named 'The official food of San Francisco.'"
Ahem.
On their location page: "t's It Ice Cream Co. is located in Burlingame, California, just minutes from the San Francisco Airport."
BURLINGAME IS NOT SAN FRANCISCO. It's not even San Francisco County. It's not the same area code. It's not the same city.
IT'S NOT IT, dumbasses.
And the oatmeal cookies they use taste like doggie biscuits.
I kid.
They actually taste like a mixture between sawdust and Styrofoam -- which is now banned in San Francisco. Now Burlingame? They love this crap.
P.S. SFO is not in San Francisco, either. However, they've got a San Francisco address. Look it up: http://www.flysfo.com/...
"What is SFO's address?
San Francisco International Airport
PO Box 8097
[Not Burlingame, not Millbrae, but] San Francisco, CA 94128"
P.P.S. Tofutti Cuties taste like little frozen doggie turds.
I kid.
That's an insult to doggie turd.
P.P.P.S. Thrify's uber alles.

Ahhh, It's It! This takes me back to 7th grade!
Ice-cream+cookies+chocolate glaze sounds like it could be heaven, but this tastes just like something you could buy in a middle school snack bar, which is exactly where I first [and last] had an Its It.
The best thing about this random product is the process of breaking it down into its original components as you eat it. It's impossible to bite an It's It like an ice-cream sandwich, because the cookies are pretty hard, and the inside squishes out... so, first eat the chocolate around the edges. Then take one cookie off the top, lick off the ice cream, and then chew the cookies. I was usually sick of the It's It by the time I got to the cookies, so they found their way to the trash can.

I wish wish wish I could give you a better review, oh creamy friend of my youth. Unfortunately, I cannot, as you have changed so much that you no longer resemble the its-it of old beyond your "chocolatey" facade.
The its-it of old contained rich ice cream sandwiched between two sweet and chewy oatmeal raisin cookies, and the whole thing was dipped in quick-melting chocolate coating. A few years ago, I noticed the raisins were gone -- not just few-and-far-between as they had been -- but entirely absent. Then, the ice cream started to take on a carageenan-y lack of creamy meltiness. Finally, one day I went to indulge myself, bit in, and to my horror -- CRUNCH!!!
Who the hell wants a crunchy cookie in an ice-cream/cookie sandwich? NOBODY! Well, maybe SOMEBODY, but not ME. Especially not in the ice cream treat that so defined my youth and local pride -- "our" true SF treat!
Feh. Never again. You used to represent fantastic abundance, but now you bring only disappointment.

Is "It's-It" the contracted expression for "It is what it is", the most reviled management response in corporate America...or is it a case of negligence wherein two pronouns search with little hope for a common reference point...or maybe it's just the definitive ice cream sandwich that everyone copies but no one conquers?
There's nothing like an undisturbed childhood memory like an "It's-It" to take all my blues away in an otherwise calorie-conscious world - two hefty oatmeal cookies with a solid wedge of frozen ice cream in between and then dipped entirely in chocolate. It is often so frozen that the initial bite takes a while to maneuver, even requiring a remedial licking process, which is just like...err..uh...eating a Popsicle. Yeah, that's it...eating a Popsicle.
I prefer the classic - pure vanilla with no additional frills. No phony-baloney cappuccino for me or the mint or chocolate variations for that matter. Oh who am I kidding? I'd get a variety box if they had them....and they probably do at Costco, one of many reasons why a membership there would speed up my death by coronary.
As I am speeding by on 101 looking longingly at their signage in Burlingame with a bit of drool on the corner of my mouth, I know I can't go back to Klondikes, or God forbid, Skinny Cow sandwiches, which melt the moment you put them in your shopping cart. The "It's-It" must live forever like Dorian Gray, where a faded painting of the ice cream sandwich melts away in the closet.

Perci N's unwarranted criticism as sadly misinformed. Quite often people with nothing good (or helpful) to say forget to hold their tongue. Then again I suppose people like to write for the sake of writing.
As with almost all the traditional SF based companies, the company started in SF and moved to cheaper real estate outside of town as demand increased... they we're initially located at playland-at-the-beach until the 70's. Their website explains it all, if you feel so inclined.
Not that being five minutes south of SF should affect that. I mean, SFO is in between Millbrae, Burlingame, San Bruno and Brisbane but no one complains about San Francisco International not being in SF.
I digress...
I used to really like It's It. All flavors... It was a big part of my childhood and reminds me of summer and family picnics.
