12 reviews for It's Greek to Me
Stopped by with the family last night cause we wanted to try something besides our usual Vietnamese in the area. I generally like Greek food but the food here was underwhelming. Especially for the price.
I had the lamb kokkinisto which wasn't bad. But $16 for what's essentially lamb in tomato sauce over pasta? Ehh...
My wife and toddler shared a shrimp souvlaki in pita which they liked fine. When I tried a piece of shrimp though, I found it to be way overcooked. But the overall taste was fine. We also had an extra basket of pita which was actually pretty good by itself and would have gone well with their dips had we had the foresight to order one.
The restaurant itself is quite nice. Bright, spacious and clean. Child (and pet I think) friendly as well. The waitress was friendly and helpful as well.
Will we be back? I'm not sure. It's not high on our list of returns but I can see ourselves back again at some later point when we're tired of our usual routine again.
I ususally like It's Greek To Me so ordered delivery for dinner last weekend. Greek salad was awful. The chicken souvlaki platter tasted ok but was tiny. And I don't remember paying $16 for it in the past. I also don't remember the Greek salad costing over $8 previously either. Ultimately, the food with tax and tip came out to around $30. I expected good food at a reasonable value from IGTM but got neither.
Yes, it's a chain. Yes, it's not Astoria.
I have to agree with some of the other reviews on some of the dishes I've gotten from here. The Moussaka was not great, and I wasn't a huge fan of their Spanikopita.
However, I do occasionally go here for their chicken gyro. Their pita is nice and chewy. The chicken is moist and well seasoned. Their Tzaziki is REALLY good. Granted it's only one thing off their menu, but it's a good lunch/dinner for me.
Also, their Hummus (called something in Greek on the menu) is quite good. It almost tastes similar to my own hummus...but mine's still better...:-)

Usually have to ask, but they are prompt once you do.
I am by no means Greek, but it doesn't take much more than a worldly outlook to realize that this small franchise that claims to sell authentic Greek food claims incorrectly.
DONT bother. The menu features overpriced items of food that, when made fresh, like the Gyros and platters, are disappointing in their lack of flavor, except for the over garlic tzaziki sauce. Pita bread is greasy, too. EW.
Other things on the menu, like the spinach pie, (about 7 dollars for a tiny portion), and even pricier entrees like the moussaka, are reheated. (I know this because I used to work there). Rice pudding comes straight out of the jar of prepurchased pudding, btw, and it tastes like paper.
I admit I may be biased because the jerk owners fired me for no good reason without warning, (one day i was just replaced) but I WILL give myself credit for knowing authentic Greek food when I see or taste it, and at this franchise, my friends, you will find very little of that.
the only things i'd get are the salads, and the pizzas are....interesting.
Ive had the gyro platters, and they just made me get a bad stomach ache and a lot of gas.
also, there is little seafood offered, and i happen to think the best thing about any mediteranean cuisine is the seafood. grilled seabass, crabs, clams, etc. all they offer at "its greek to me" is grilled calamari and shrimp. what an exotic touch, no?
I guess what's "Greek" to you is NOT Greek to me.
Have only had tea and rice pudding there, but it was good.
I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Besides the fact that it's a chain, the only thing that is Greek about this restaurant is the menu. It's "Greek fries" are just your regular diner-style fries with lemon juice and oregano, but they sure don't price them as such. EVERYTHING at this place is overpriced, and the quality is hardly worth paying that much for. Quality, taste, and appearance of food is at par with a diner, but priced as authentic. This place is a rip-off.
Too expensive for the amount of food you receive. Delivery took more than 45 minutes.
When this place first opened it made an amazing gyro and it was stuffed with meat not the fillers. When the gyro is made like that - yeah I would pay that price without hesitation. Now - it was so awful - filled with fillers and three LITTLE pieces of meat. Come on now - who would pay that kind of money for that?? I see why its empty every night - surprised they are still even in business.
It has been a couple of years since I tried It's Greek to Me and though I remember it being expensive for what was offered, I couldn't remember how the food tasted. Well, yesterday I ordered in for lunch and was truly disappointed. Although the order arrived quickly, I ended up paying close to $20 for a chicken and lamb combo gyro and a slab of baklava.
After my very first bite, I quickly remembered why I had been avoiding this restaurant for years. The sandwich was under-seasoned and contained the driest, most overcooked chicken and lamb I've ever eaten. I used a full container of extra tzatziki to make it less bland, but it didn't help. I ended up throwing most of it away. One of the reviews here mentioned that "anyone with a working palate can tell the difference between cheap food and food that is made with quality ingredients." Well, my palate is in great working order, and ultimately it doesn't matter if the ingredients used are "quality ingredients" if the execution is so dismal. In this case, I did not get what I paid for and although it's not the worst food I've ever had, I wouldn't recommend It's Greek to Me.
I LOVE this place! True, it has a distinct advantage being the closest restaurant to my home, but it is always delicious. My favorite dish is the Greek salad with grilled calamari, but I have have almost everything on the menu and am never disappointed. The prices are a little higher than I would like, but the quality is always consistent and the food always delicious.
This place is great. The food is consistently delicious, and the staff is incredibly friendly. Their chicken greek salads are AMAZING! As for people who say this place is on par with "diner" food, that's just ridiculous. Anyone with a working palate can tell the difference between cheap food and food that is made with quality ingredients. I also believe in the saying "you get what you pay for!" 5 stars for It's Greek to Me. Thanks for giving us a great option for dinner in JC.
This place has most of the standard Greek Restaurant fare, and everything I've had has been great. Like the last reviewer, I particularly like the Greek salad with grilled calamari, which always comes with big slices of tomatoes of a quality I've never seen in the local stores. The Greek fries, seasoned with lemon and oregano, are also really good. The only drawback is the prices, which aren't outrageous, but are a bit higher than comparable places in the neighborhood.
