I've been coming to this place since they served bread that wasn't stale. See what I did there? Sneaky, huh? But it's true. This place makes a mean-ass Italian hogie (the guy with crossed eyes makes the best one), but the thing is useless if the bread is stale, which it has been the last three times I've been there.

The meatball sandwich is good enough that the bread could be moldy and I'd still eat it. And the Veal Scalopini on Thursdays is good but you can actually feel your ass getting chubbier as you swallow. No wonder all those state workers look that way.

Anyway, once they fix the bread situation, this place will be 5 stars again.

This place is a little intimidating when you first see it, but is the best lunchtime value I've found in Midtown.

Their daily sandwich specials are incredible (except for the roast beef on Tuesdays...pretty boring), and inexpensive.

Sometimes their small sandwiches are a tad bit too small (but at under $5 each, it's difficult to find fault), but most of the time, they're just right. Since Plum Blossom (across the street) raised their prices significantly, this has become my new defacto lunch place. Where else can you get a decent - and mostly healthy - meal for under 6 bucks?

Also, try their "Dirty" chips - these are the best potato chips I have EVER had. I highly recommend the garlic and herb variety (just watch out - each bag has 300 calories!).

Post script - In addition to being among the cheapest lunch spots in Midtown, it is also the QUICKEST. You go in, go up to the deli, ask for a large or small "special,", and they hand it to you. If you're in a hurry, this is the place. In and out in under 5 minutes - every time.

Yay!  I LOVE this place.  Great sandwiches, take-out and deli.  Totally old school market with a nice wine section and imported pasta and other goodies.  Crowded at lunchtime, but worth it.  So worth it.
