i really liked this place.. the waitresses are a bit tough, at first, but warm up quickly enough with a smile and nice manners..

i ordered the sushi-grade tuna sandwich with a side of french fries and a pickle.  My sandwich came out divine which i asked for very rare and it was very mouth-wateringly good.  the fries were coated with a very light cheese topping that was baked on top just to give it an added salty flavor.. I asked for a slop of mayo on the side (but of course) and they were happy to oblige...

the outdoor feel with being right next to the water in an open gazebo added extra charm on a bright sunny day.  food came out quickly too.

a good choice... when in the hood.

If I had to choose a "go to" restaurant when traveling between the middle/lower keys and mainland Florida, it would more times than not be Island Grill.

Over the years, they made some positive alterations to the building; my favorite change being the covered outdoor eating area at the entrance.  I wish I could say the service and food have made some positive changes too but sadly they have remained the same for about a decade.  The food and service aren't typically bad, just a bit inconsistent.

SERVICE:  The servers are almost always upbeat and friendly (although the last visit was scarred by a server in a miserable mood).  Most of the time they do a good job servicing the table but small errors are common (easily fixed and not normally ruining the meal).

FOOD:  They have a few dishes that never disappoint such as the mahi rueben sandwich, graham cracker crusted calamari, spicy tuna roll. Other dishes are quite good too but these dishes get my "time tested seal of approval".  Be forewarned, some of the dishes (including my recommendations) can be a bit greasy.

AMBIANCE:  The whole place just oozes with laid back florida keys charm.  Grab a seat facing the open water in the A/C or under the covered patio dining area and watch the boat traffic, or better yet get a better view sitting at the beachfront tables.

Overall, the food and service are excellent but the with the "sometimes" blah service or errors I just can't give that 4th star... sorry but still worth recommending.

We were told no table near window available and would have to sit at a bar type table facing the back of bartender. We decided to have a drink in bar and wait for table with chairs.  2 minutes later before we got our drinks the hostess was back with a table ready. Humm....
Nachos with a seafood cheese sauce sounded great but basically it was fishy frozen tasting bit of shrimp, baby scallops and jalapeños in a horrible pasty yellow looking sauce.  Tasted like jar cheese.
This place needs an uplift.. They need new blood and new menu.

I was in the keys for the weekend and was highly craving lobster rolls.  I should've known when I ordered them and the waitress couldn't remember if they had any that it was not a top seller.  It tasted no better than a typical seafood salad from the supermarket or as someone in our group pointed out- subway seafood sandwich.  Unfortunately for us- this lobster rolls were about 3 times the price of the subway one.

I did also get shrimp tacos which was pretty good and tried a conch fritter- also pretty good. I feel like the waitress should've warned us that the lobster rolls were not that good when all 4 of us ordered it.  Save your money and visit another place in the keys for your lobster roll fix.

Came across Island Grill while searching for a place that makes lobster rolls. I tried one in Key West a few weeks back and I HAD to find a place in Islamorada that sold 'em.

Unfortunately for me four of my other friends who also ordered them, it tasted and looked no different than some Publix seafood salad on an untoasted bun.

Besides this total fantasy lobster roll fail, the other items are just OK.

We ordered the Tuna Nachos which were actually pretty good.

My friend's crab cake sandwich was apparently "meh".

The ONLY real winner were the conch fritters. We left wishing we just ordered 10 baskets of conch fritters.

Nice, casual place overlooking the water, good to munch on a bunch of appetizers. Find your lobster rolls elsewhere.

YUM!! My friend and I visited on the way down (thanks to former Yelpers) to Key West this past weekend. We were craving something fresh and light (trying to be healthy before we ruined it in Key West for our friend's 30th bday! :)) and it surpassed our expectations when the food was delivered! We felt sac-religious ordering anything but seafood, so shared the Tuna Nachos and split an order of the Blackened Mahi Tacos. Both were incredibly fresh, but the Nachos were like anything I'd ever had before!! There were three large crispy wontons at the bottom topped with seaweed salad, ahi tuna, soy and wasabi sauces, along with all kinds of other deliciousness!  Party on a plate for sure. These are a MUST if you decide to go!

The only minor complaint I have was a bit of slow service, but our server was SO nice that you couldn't be mad at her. Plus, no one moves at a fast pace in the Keys, isn't that the main reason we all go?!   :)

WTF. REALLY?! We had to stop by this place because we were really hungry.

Got the seafood nachos...which is not good. To pair pure seafood (imagine the taste of a simple shrimp) on a nacho filled with onions, cheese, etc...is not a good combo.

Ordered crab cake sandwich with fries. Not good. A very basic, and simple menu...family owned..where people stop here just because it's convenient and not to seek it out. Wouldn't come back here again.

    Service is good though.

Has to be one of the coolest places to eat in the Keys.  It's small and it's basically a boat dock with a roof and partial walls.  It sits on a small canal off of the snake river. The windows zip in and you can see the water below you through the cracks in the floor.  You can arive by boat if you have one.

Food is excellent.  We took our own catch for them to prepare ... We had their appetizer smoked tuna nachos.  Nothing at all like a nacho, it was more like a huge plate of sushi. Excellent.  Our fish was done family style blackened, grilled, fried, and coconut fried; all were good.  Not greasy.  Baked potato, vegetable medley, sweet potato fries, rice, a salad, all were good. Food was great, atmosphere casual, topped off with key lime pie it was a great meal.

I would recommend that any visitor to the islands visit the grill.

Another great place to grab a meal! We passed the place on the way back to our resort one evening and knew we had to eat there. We literally followed our noses here! The smell seduced us from the highway!
We started with a Smoked Fish appie. Most of the places in The Keys have their own version of this dish. They are all different and most are good. This one stood out because it had just a hunt of spiciness that gave it a little  punch, along with the rich smokiness of the fresh fish..perfect!
Hubby was a bit fished out at that point and he got a burger. He loved it.He said it was cooked just as he asked(med well) and was accompanied by bleu cheese and avocado.

I had a Mahi Reuben....good Lord, that baby was good! Fresh grilled Mahi fillet on rye bread, layered with a unique coleslaw and Swiss cheese and a smack of Thousand Island dressing, all grilled to a nice melt-y state. It had a nice sliver of a pickle on the side and potato salad that tasted like someone's Grandma made it!
Service was great and we saw an iguana sunning itself on the docks as we left.
FYI...service in The Keys may not be as swift as Chicago standards,but..really...what is your hurry?? Enjoy and slow down!!

Save your money and head down the road for some seafood. This place has nothing outstanding.
In my opinion, they are charging a little bit too much for mediocre food here. I rather use the money spent here for some seafood. There is nothing special here. We tried the ribs, the crab cake, the lo mein, and the seafood pasta with alfredo sauce. I find the lo mein and the crab cakes too salty for my palate. Maybe you guys tolerate sodium at a higher level, but these dishes are heart killers to me. The ribs and the pasta were okay, there's nothing special about them and there's nothing bad about them. They were passable.

Our first stop from the airport for the much talked about Tuna Nacho's....and they did not disappoint! It is very very very hard for me not to order a fish sandwich when I see one on the menu, but I figured this asian spicy creation sounded just tempting enough.

It was fantastic! Cold tender pieces of Ahi tuna, with a great seaweed salad over three fried wonton wrappers all covered in a wasabi and sesame aioli. Perfection!

Also tried the Key West Lager for the first time upon the recommendation of our great waitress and we were hooked! Had at least one a day the whole vacation!

Also loved the atmosphere of the open deck right in the mangroves!

Had an amazing lunch today at this place! The vibe is distinctly "Keys" and very casual. The staff was incredibly friendly, especially our waitress Susie. She couldn't have been friendlier or warmer. I'd go back just to have her as a waitress. Highlights of the meal included: tuna nachos, crispy fish sandwich and the conch chowder.

I love the Island Grill. You can access it by boat or car. We love to take our boat there for lunch. The absolute best thing on the menu (IMHO) is the Tuna Nachos. Perfectly seared ahi tuna on crisp wontons, a layer of sesame seaweed salad on top of the wontons. Don't get turned off by the "sesame seaweed salad" . If you've never had it you'll love it. Goes great with these tuna nachos. This is topped with a wasabi sauce, sesame seeds, soy sauce, sriracha and scallions. I will definitely get this again, very refreshing and light.
One last thing to add....they have manatees that come in by the dock. We were lucky enough to see a baby that came in and entertained all of us for about 20 mins. These creatures are beautiful, they breathe air and come to the surface every 3-4 mins. They  live in the shallow waters around 4-6ft.. The adults are around 10ft. long and can get up to 1200lbs. The waitresses are very knowledgeable and answered all our questions about the manatees. They pour fresh water from pitchers into their mouth which they love. It's quite a thing to see for adults and kids. Anyway, give this place a try, great food, service and ambiance.

We've been here many times since my initial review. Still can't beat the waterside location, and they've spruced the place up a bit in recent months, changing up the main dining and bar area.

However, the service is still spotty. The waitstaff is generally really nice, but there tend to be a lot of mistakes/forgotten items. This past visit, they forgot our appetizer, and the BF's dad's entree never came out. We finally flagged the waitress down awhile later, and she re-ordered the entree, no charge, which was nice.

All in all, worth a visit, but there may be a few hiccups in your experience. Oh - the mahi reuben is OUTSTANDING. One of the best sandwiches I've ever tasted, hands down. Caesar salad on the other hand, is just eh. Lettuce was a little wilty and there was nothing unique about it. It is the Keys after all, so retain your laid back attitude and you'll be just fine. :)

This is a cute place, very "Florida Keys", which means it's a little edgy and divey. I like that. Nothin' fancy here. Lots of wood and water views and a big deck and boats.

We chose to eat inside because there was yet another Jimmy Buffet impersonator with a sailor hat, a gee-tar and an extremely loud and terrible sound system. Nothing against Jimmy Buffet wanna-be's in sailor hats, but if you're going to play Cheeseburger in Paradise (again), then try to make it sound as pretty as the view, OK?

We ordered cheeseburgers (of course!), Sam Adams (wicked pissah!) and sweet potato fries (yay!). The burgers were huge, cooked just right, the fries were crisp and yummy. After a long drive through the Keys researching places to have our wedding, this was the perfect spot for our lunch before our return home to Broward.

I noticed some folks here mentioned the edgy servers. Wellllll, our server looked pretty darned familiar to me. It occurred to me shortly after I left exactly who she was.....the meanest chick in my dirty old hometown just south of Boston. She was literally a pit bull 20 years ago, only with big, frosted 80's hair. But she was nice enough this time. Hope she didn't spit in my burger. Small world.....

More than one of us had heard good things about Island Grill, so we choose to come here for dinner our first night. As others have mention it is easy to miss since its under the bridge and the Hog Heaven sign is quiet distracting ....

Not much to look at from the outside, but the views of the water and mangroves are quiet nice. We sat on the outside covered deck and ordered drinks. I should have ordered beer, but I was on a margarita kick that day, but it was disappointing ... standard mix.

The food was delicious. I had the low country shrimp & grits. It was huge, definitely enough for two people to share. I've had shrimp & grits in a lot of places and this ranks with the best.

The atmosphere is casual and relaxing, but leaves a little to be desired compared with others. However, food is most certainly recommended.

We had traveled miles since our last stop for food. Made the trip from Knoxville, Tennessee and arrived around 11:30am and the weather was beautiful so we sat in the open air waterfront seating area. We ordered sandwhiches. Jerk chicken and Yellow Tail fish sand were great. Price was about avg from the other reviews we read. Two people total bill $27 with no appetizer. Pricey where I come from but its not apples to apples since there is no equivalent view/atmosphere in Tennessee.

We had sweet tea and sandwiches, sitting out on the covered dock. The aforementioned Jimmy Buffett impersonator wasn't so good, but it was otherwise a nice location to look out on the water. The food was OK. Not great, not bad, but combined with the nice location (both on the water and in terms of its location in the Keys) it's worth a visit if it's mealtime.

Incidentally, the waitress messed up my wife's order and added sweet potato fries, which she never mentioned and didn't want. My wife pointed this out and we were told that we could have 'em anyway...and then we were billed for them. Not cool.

You know a place is good when JL. A writes more than three lines for it! :)

Located right by the bridge...or under it, you might miss it while being distracted by the Hog Heaven billboard...but you know it's good when the trucks and cars are all lined up along the highway at dangerous tipping angles! My friend simply did as the locals did and parked at a random spot he could fit in!

Walking in on a Saturday night, there was a customer appreciation buffet dinner going out at the back by the beach...the wait staff allowed us to go check it out before deciding. $15 for snow crab, Alaskan crab, shrimp and what nots. I would have been sold...if only it wasn't windy and cold..and the tent outside looked like it was pre-Bingo night at the local aging community center. We opted to sit inside where it was windless and ordered from the regular menu.

Conch soup - tomato-based. we were expecting clam chowder style. Bf said it was good, I ain't no fan of conch.
Stone Crab (1 lb) for $28ish - YUMMY! 8 claws, pre-broken. Came with tools to further break it down.
Crab cakes - OMG! It wasn't that breadcrumb filled crap, it was REAL CRAB! ( couldn't help the pun there!) If you don't want to get your hands dirty for crab, this is the dish to order. 2 big thick patties.
Blackened Hog Fish with some Gorgonzola cheese with balsamic reduction - DELISH! who would have thought to put cheese on fish! There were probably 5 fillets?
No room for dessert at this point...;/

Service was good, our waitress was the typical blonde, tanned and laid-back lady who took the liberty to keep our main entrees warm while we worked through our stone crabs! :)

    Tip-bits:
If you are going South, it's on the L, after the bridge. If you are going North, it's on the R, before the bridge.
Look out for the hog Heaven billboard, then you will see Island Grill
    Call for special events?

This place is so what you expect and hope for from a keys restaurant, you would almost think it was staged for a movie.

Tucked in under/next to the highway bridge over Snake Creek, it feels as out of the way as a 2 by 1/2 island can allow.

Atmosphere was perfect. It is on a canal, with a pocketed mangrove wall on the other side. It looks like a conglomerate of run down shacks that someone painted with a vibrance of colors that suggests either the painter or the owner was on crack. Or they used whatever colors were on sale that week. There was live music playing, a Buffet wanna be who did fine for me.

The menu was amazing. I will have to come back many times to try all the things I want to. Of the shrimp & grits, batter fried hog snapper and double bone in pork chops that were ordered at our table, the pork chops definitely won, although all were good.

We ate so much, that I actually didn't even ask for the desert menu. Besides, there is a Dairy Queen on the way home for us.

Fresh seafood in a truly quirky and delightful waterside setting.  There is 'the beach' outside, and covered seating on the porch (also very outside!)  Either way you're near water while also being right next to the highway.  I know this sounds like it would be disturbing, but it wasn't.  It was semi-surreal, and wonderful.

On a drive down to the Keys, or whenever in the area, try Island Grill.  I highly recommend you get yourself a Sea Dog.  Having never had one before, I didn't know what to expect.   As the name would suggest, it's a long, fried piece of cod in a hot dog roll served with fresh salsa, onions, and a spicy mayo.  The double-fried fries on the side made this the perfect seafood shack lunch.

If you pcture the bar that Buffet was walking to when he "blew out his flip-flop" this is what you would see.

Kind of like an old fish house that someone fixed up and turned into a restaurant. It's so close to Snake Creek that you need to make a U-turn after the bridge to get here.

The food was very tasty, and the service was good, our waitress was a nice middle aged lady who was very helpful when we order. When it came time to settle up she knocked 10% off the meal, since my sister's food was gonna go soggy if she tried to take it home. Michelle's food was great, but since it didn't have staying power for the next day! Now that is truly caring if the customer was satisfied.

Waterfront dining can often mean good views with crappy food, but this restaurant pleasantly surprised me with a great meal.  Ordered the stuffed Florida lobster - for $21 got a large 1.5 to 2 lb lobster that was topped with jumbo lump crab meat that resembled crabcakes I used to enjoy in Maryland.  Also had a half rack of the ribs, which were fall off the bone tender with a zesty guava BBQ sauce.  While the meals took a while to come out, they were definitely worth the wait.

Waitresses are a bit rough around the edges, but friendly enough.  They had a live Caribbean singer when I was there, entertaining the folks on the patio.  If I'm ever heading back down the Keys, I'd definitely come back!

AVOID AT ALL COSTS, OR IT WILL COST YOU!

Oh how I wanted to love this place.  On the water, rude hostess, seemed like it had character.  I was right.....it was just bad character.

Our group sat down and ordered some beers.  About ten minutes later, they bring out beer, in half pint cups.  Imagine an orange juice glass of beer.  You know, one of those tiny ones.  Anyhow, beer is beer, so we drank it.

After looking at the menu, I remained hopeful.  We were all on vacation, so we decided that healthy meals were not required.  We started with the graham cracker crusted calamari.  What we got were paper thin pieces of what appeared to be squid jerky, covered in a ridiculous amount of stale batter.  It was pretty horrible for $12.95.  The main courses sounded good, but after the calamari disappointed, I knew it was going to be a rough dinner.

The girl ordered cracked conch, and I had tater chip fish.  The waiter described it as "really good"  maybe he even said awesome.  Either way, he gave it a high recommendation.  When it got to the table, it looked like something out of an old folks home.  There was a pathetic side of steamed broccoli, some previously frozen sweet potato fries, and a sorry ass piece of grouper that looked like it had been steamed.  On top of the fish?  Two ruffles potato chips (the fish on the menu was described as "home made potato chip crusted, then baked to a crisp").

The cracked conch was not tender at all.  In fact, it was extremely tough.  It was also served with frozen french fries.

This wouldn't have been so horrible if it was some divey place near a gas station in the keys.  However, once the bill came, I felt like I had been raped.  Each entree was $29.00.  A disappointing dinner for 4?  $150.00 plus tip.

Slow service, crappy food, no ambiance.  AVOID THE ISLAND GRILL!

For that price, get a far superior meal at The Atlantic's Edge at Cheeca Lodge, Ziggie and Mad Dogs, or Mile Marker 88.

My friends and I ate at the Island Grill 2 wks ago, twice in one weekend, thats how exceptional it is. We were on our way to Key West for Fantasy fest. I highly recommend this as a good midway stop either to or from your journey to Key West from Ft. lauderdale.

My favorite dish on the menu is the Tuna Nachos, sounds wierd but tastes delish. I had them once before and was thinking about them for 2 weeks prior to my trip. You get 3 large wontons fried then topped off with sea weed and ahi tuna with special sweet soy sauce and other tastey flavors and sesame seeds. Awesome presentation, like dining at the Four Seasons with a keywest flare. Do not leave without trying.

The other dish i recommend is the deep fried cheese cake which the restaurant has won awards for. It was cheese cake dipped in batter deep friend then served with chocolate, caramel syrups, whipped cream and ice cream, extremely delectable, do not leave without trying and save room for it.

I haven't even mentioned the nice ambiance and view right next to the water and huge shadey trees-which make you feel sooo relaxed as you drink your sangria and listen to live music. If the restaurant has a wait, I recommend visiting the inside bar to have a drink and chatting up the pleasant bar tenders who make great recommendations of menu items. They are the only reason i knew to try the cheesecake.

the best part was the tuna nachos. the shrimp and grits lacked flavor and spice. the grouper sandwich was the same. portions were good size but the food needs more pizazz!

Stopped in here to eat before heading back to the beach after an adventure on the motorcycle. It was recommended by a friend and it looked oh-so-inviting.

As others mentioned the setup is lovely, you really couldn't ask for something more relaxing. I was disappointed not once, but twice when I tried to order beer... both were out :( bummer on a hot summer day! I finally did get a beer they weren't out of.

We started with the conch fritters, which were great. We both ordered variations of Mahi that were both pretty good. Not the best pieces of fish I've ever tasted, but definitely not the worst. Had some brown spots & oddly considering the location didn't taste all that fresh. We split some key lime pie, which was a nice finish to the meal.

The staff was friendly. All in all I thought it was OK, next time I go to the keys I'd like to try another place though. After sampling a few other places I'll probably come back for a visit here.

We hit this casual and fun restaurant for a weekday breakfast and fell promptly in love with it. Wide selection of traditional breakfast fare and more interesting choices. The stuffed french toast is a real specialty and I had fried fish and eggs that could have easily fed two adults. The staff were just wonderful, giving us travel tips and chatting and always keeping coffee mugs full. I'd love to go back and try it out for dinner sometime. When we drove by in the evening their outdoor seating and outdoor bar were positively hopping!

Head here and you'll feel like a real local in-the-know!

    Fucking AMAZING!

Island Grill is a place that we stumbled upon after a weekend of Key West debauchery- and what a stumble it was.

All I have to say is TUNA NACHOS, TUNA FLASH FRIED ROLL.
You have to order BOTH and order it twice, or three times or even four.

The outdoor waterfront dock/deck patio is in a beautiful and perfect mangrove inlet.

There was of course, the obligatory Jimmy Buffet-esque live guitar singer trio to entertain and the service was friendly and straight forward.

This place is totally worth the drive. Make a trip out of it- you won't be disappointed. Seriously. I promise.

Oh and did I mention to order the Tuna Nachos and the Tuna Roll?

The first Keylime pie I tried while on my keys weekend was at the Island Grill. This was a great find for waterfront dining accessible by either car or boat. This key lime pie was a great reminder of how to end a meal in the Florida Keys! It was indeed fresh by the crunch of the traditional thin graham crust. The filling itself was rich and tart and perfect to share with someone. It was traditional in every sense of the word.

Great ocean view setting. Great meal. Always hear good things about this place. Give this place a try. Can be difficult to get a table during busy season.

Based on Yelp members' reviews, we ventured out in the rain to the Island Grill. At 9 PM, the place was packed, but there were seats at the bar. Gina the bartender was rushed, but very friendly. We split the smoked fish dip which was light, flavorful, and just spicy enough. It was attractively plated, too. I ordered the tater-crusted fish and it was amazing. Perfect combo of fresh mild fish, crunchy/salty crust and creamy seasoning. Homemade coleslaw wasn't overdressed and the bits of fresh pineapple were refreshing.

My husband ordered one of the specials- tempura hogfish with mango chutney. It was well prepared, but paled in comparison to my entree.

The keylime pie is made on-site and worth the calories. Big enough to share after a large meal.

We saw several other dishes make their way around the place and portions were generous and attractive. We plan on going back for lunch before we head back home.

The atmosphere here is great. Come by boat, car or motorcycle. Thirsty Thursday are a good excuse to party with friends without having to wait for the weekend. My fiancee says they have the best Cheese Steak sandwich around.  I cannot get past the seared Ahi Tuna w/ seaweed salad and their fresh oysters...they are out of this world!!!!

the locals know this place is the place for casual dining in the Upper Keys. Neat atmosphere, competent staff, solid food. the mahi ruben is a local favorite, but the rest of the menu offers great choices - nicoise salad is very well done for example.  the conch sandwich is decent, but IMHO conch is best in corn fritters due to texture.

    solid 4 stars possibly 5.
