"A film should be more like music than like fiction.
It should be a progression of moods and feelings."
~Stanley Kubrick
Recently I met my brother in the city, and we saw the new movie, "Across the Universe". The movie is difficult to explain. I suppose the best description would be to say that it is an anti-war hallucination set around the Beatle's music. It was magnificent, and seeing it with my brother made it even better.
Julie Taymor has created a stunning vision, weaving music into images that will touch your soul. This is a love-it-or-hate-it kind of movie. Yes, there is, at the core, Beatle's music, but it is arranged and performed quite differently from the original versions. The movie is visually magnificent and emotionally profound on many levels.
While ostensibly a "love story", the film actually is much more of a social statement, where the turbulence of the 60s lines up directly with the issues confronting the world today.
The movie is a joy and a wonder. Don't miss it!
