6 reviews for Irene's Pupusas III
Now with occasional raw bar.
Opened Skyway Disco next door, connected on the inside to what used to be a Furniture store, had a bottle of Pilsner 100.
Was one of 4 people in the huge open place at 9pm.
Wednesday is 2.50 Bottle night.
Cerveceria La Constancia S.A. - Pilsner 100

This a casual restaurant frequented mostly by Latin locals. The beef fajitas are marinated well and the produce is really fresh. Have the plantains for dessert or a side dish. The wait staff has always been extremely nice and helpful, and I'm saying this after eating here probably 30 times in the last four years. Go and watch Real Madrid play; they show all the international soccer games. They are wrapping up construction on the Sky Bar they added next door.
I don't know what Nicole's review was about; its called blue collar baby. Welcome to Wheaton.
There are good pupusas to be had at Irene's - they even have fillings that other pupuserias don't, like chicken and loroco.
But at Irene's getting the food is half the battle. The wait staff sucks, and if you don't speak Spanish, expect to get sub-par treatment. I did. The waitress acted like I was from another planet, which contrasts starkly with the outright friendliness of the people at a place like Samantha's.
Good food, bad service. Get it to go!
My husband & I went to this place to have pupusas after reading all these wonderful Yelp reviews posted here. I have about a million issues with this place. First of all, I'm surprised I didn't get shanked while eating here since the other clientele were so sketchy. I didn't even remove my coat because I assumed someone was going to get knifed or a shooting would break out. Second of all, they apparently decided to spend all their decorating money on a million flat screen televisions and not on a proper floor. Concrete subflooring... mmm cozy. The tables and chairs that you will sit at when you eat here are made out of steel and just kind of awkwardly strewn about what I would assume becomes a dance floor after 9:00pm. No one else was eating here, just drinking. The waitresses kept getting grabbed and sexually harassed by other patrons which was a little unnerving. And the music was so fucking loud I couldn't even talk without yelling throughout the entire meal. The food itself was bland and ridiculously oily (and the grease/oil had an old, stale taste). We ordered three different kinds of pupusas and I couldn't tell the difference between any of them. I also ordered some maranon juice and it was pretty much made from concentrate and tap water and not mixed well at all. So my best advice is to stay the fuck away from this place unless you want to drink tequila shots and get into a knife fight. This is not a good place for kids, for couples, or for anyone except ex-convicts, drug dealers, or assorted other criminals. I gave the waitress a huge tip because I felt bad that we were probably the only patrons she wouldn't have to do anything "extra" for, if you know what I mean. Ick, stay away.
Very good pupusas and baliadas. Yeah, the wait staff hasn't entirely mastered English, but just order in Spanish. I'm a gringo, and I can do that. Besides, a lot of the waitresses are really cute.
Pupusas are Salvadorean comfort food. Imagine really thick warm flour tortillas filled with fragrant meat, beans, or veggies, and oozing with cheese. The pupusas at Irenes are fresh and moist and cheap (order three and you have a full meal for less than $10). The Sopa de Res is also excellent (beef bone broth baised soup with yuca, corn & some other vegetables). The tacos are also tasty and cheap, but the beef fajitas tend to be fairly greasy. The atmosphere is clean and comfortable, and the beer is well priced. There are several Irene's Pupusas in the area (it is family owned, and there really is an Irene), and this is the best location to dine in.
