I'm a Phillip fan. His technique and flow and transitions are very relaxing - the massage feels awesome. He is responsive to my feedback and professional. He has a kind and calm energy about him that makes it easy for me to relax, feel safe, and enjoy the somewhat strange experience of being touched by a stranger. The sessions I've had with him have enabled emotional processing and increased my body awareness and sense of being present.

Katie threw away a loyal customer.
I've seen Katie, the owner of Intuitive Bodywork, around 6 times over the past few months. I always show up 10-15 minutes early to my appointments, freshly showered, behave curiously, and tip generously ($20 for an hour session). I planned to continue seeing her, and had even pre-paid for my next 3 sessions.
Today I arrived 15 minutes early as usual, and she answered the door and said angerly, "we need to talk," then proceeded to give me major attitude about how she didn't want me showing up early. She said she scheduled her appointments 30 minutes apart for a reason and didn't want me "knocking on her door" more than 2-4 minutes before the session. She seriously berated me for a good couple of minutes about this. I told her I didn't appreciate the attitude and that this wasn't good customer service. She said "it's not about customer service" and that if I didn't like it she could refund my money, which is exactly what I asked her to do.
I was shocked at Katie's unprofessional-ism. I was treated like a misbehaving child for showing up EARLY for an appointment. I would have been happy to wait in the lobby until she was ready. She never mentioned a problem with my showing up early in any of my previous sessions. I've been to many massage therapists in Seattle and Chicago and have never been treated so rudely before. There are plenty of other providers in this city who actually try to make you feel welcome and relaxed, but not Katie. Take your money elsewhere.
EDIT: I just saw Katie's response. For the record, I was less than 15 minutes early (not 20+) and there was no other client in the building when I arrived. There is also a waiting area separate from the massage room. Regardless, the "sin" of showing up early (which is required or at least considered a courtesy at most places) certainly does not warrant being treated like a jerk. All of the 5 star reviews of this place (which you'll notice are all from last year or before) have caused Katie's schedule to fill up recently. I guess she now feels comfortable taking her clients for granted. I'd rather spend my money at a place that treats me like a customer rather than someone who's imposing on their valuable time.Comment from Katie J. of Intuitive Bodywork 5/7/2011

Katie- and the other talented staff at Intuitive Bodywork- are so skilled and professional that I would recommend them to anyone looking for a fantastic massage experience.
The space is tranquil, clean and easy to find with plenty of parking on the surrounding streets.
The services are amazing, my back, neck and legs are always like jelly when I leave, a bit sore the next day and then POW! They are limber and relaxed for weeks afterwards.Comment from Katie J. of Intuitive Bodywork 12/12/2010

I had high hopes for this place after reading all the 5 stars review but sadly walked away disappointed. I had a 90 minutes massage with Anna and like the rating of 2 stars suggested, it was a "Meh. I've experienced better masseuse".
My biggest complain is that Intuitive Bodywork's masseuese was actaully not very intuitive. She appled very little pressure in the beginning so I asked her for more pressure. She then applied so much pressure that I was in pain. After a couple times of not-enough-pressure vs. pain, I gave up on asking. If she was "intuitive", she would have known how much pressure is the right amount for each client.
After 90 minutes, I only felt slightly more relaxed than when I first came in and I'm not even sure if that's from the massage or the 1 hour nap that I had. My knots were mostly still there when I left. I have a regular masseuse that I go to every 2 weeks but she was out of town so I figured I should try somone new that's closer to my house.
I gave 1 star for convenience and 1 star for their awesome website.Comment from Katie J. of Intuitive Bodywork 2/24/2011

I wanted to leave my review of two ladies at Intuitive Bodywork - Anna and Mindee. I've had a ton of massages on a regular basis for a while from the same therapist. I moved to Seattle in July and found Intuitive on Yelp hoping to find a new place I could go. These ladies are wonderful!! I use massage for relaxation and health but recently used them for recovery from an injury.
I came in about 3 weeks ago shortly after I had a (what I thought) minor quad pull during a flag football game (yes, no contact). I saw Mindee, explained what happened and she did a wonderful job working out the stickiness in my quad and my pain subsided. I played the following Saturday - double header - we won both games! I, unfortunately, well and truly pulled/tore my right quad - some girls tripped me up and I went down. It was swollen and really painful. I used RICE for the week - even at work - stretched as much as I could and sat out the following game.
I scheduled another appointment for the next Tuesday with Anna. My swelling was gone and I needed to get it worked on. She did a fantastic job finding a trigger point deep in my quad that seemed to be the beginning of the end of the pain. I sat out another game....we lost both games. I was determined to heal and play the next game!
I scheduled another appointment for this last Wednesday with Mindee to work out the last of the tightness and any potential scar tissue in there. I had worked out Monday and felt good but wanted to ensure the healing was there. Mindee, again, did a terrific job and worked out the last of the 'crud' in there. I felt no pain during stretching or working out the following day. I've had absolutely no pain or stiffness or any residual effects from the quad injury. I played my a** off on Saturday - we won! I'm grateful I found you guys!!
Anna and Mindee are GREAT and helped me to speed my healing process. They listen well and focus on what will be best to help you. I believe so much that it was their work (and my reluctant rest) that I referred a teammate to see them. (He pulled a hammy and a groin. Flag football is kind of brutal. :D) I also sent an email to the whole team to try them.Comment from Katie J. of Intuitive Bodywork 10/26/2010

I went to Katie the day after helping to execute a truly harrowing (but fabulous) wedding for my sister. Twelve hours of setup/tear down; included but was not limited to, floral arrangement, candy bar design and set-up, people herding, kid entertaining, drink fetching, fall down dancing, and frisbee. With bouts of outright drunkenness thrown in for flavor.
Needless to say, the next day I couldn't straighten my legs, and where did those bruises some from? I called Kate, and she squeezed me and my partner, into her schedule that same day. We couldn't have been more grateful.
I've had lots of massages, and I'm a big fan of deep tissue (which Katie did at no extra charge). Seriously, I can take about as much pressure as anyone short of Mike Tyson, can give. But on this day, I was so dehydrated that my muscles felt spongy. Katie had to be very careful and patient not to hurt me.
Katie is a real talent. If I lived in Seattle I would go to no other masseuse. Also, her office is clean, comfortable, and inviting. Oh, and I thought her prices were more than fair.
Thanks again Katie!!!Comment from Katie J. of Intuitive Bodywork 3/11/2010

I've been seeing Katie (for back problems) since before she qualified. From the beginning she has been amazingly talented. She does things to me no other massage therapists have done. She also takes the time to explain what she's doing and what muscles she's working on. Afterwards she gives me advice on what else I can do to help my back.
I'm not the kind of person who likes to lie down for an hour and have my back rubbed. With the half-dozen other massage therapists I've seen in my life I feel like that's all I got - a fancy back-rub. With Katie I feel like i've been worked and she's the only one I've felt a lasting benefit from.
Saying that, if you asked her I'm sure she could do the touchy-feely kind of massage too. -

Katie's massages are amazing. I like a lot of pressure, which she delivers beautifully. But she always checks in, so I imagine that if a client wanted less, she would be great with that, too. I've had a lot of massages over the years, and Katie's are right up there with the best of them. And she takes insurance. I also like that she uses an online system to book her appointments---so efficient.

I have had my fair share of massages and I have to say that Katie Joannes is by far one of the best that I have seen. Katie understands the body very well and, is very in tuned to what your body is telling, in terms of alignment and dis-comfort. As a coffee professional working on a bar all day it's nice to have someone work out the kinks.
To hit on what PhillipB says Katie does talk with you about what she is doing and why. This was new for me, and I really appreciated it afterwards because it help to get me in tuned with the therapy. -

Your first time is always awkward, right? What should I wear? This person is going to see me mostly nude, what do you talk about? Are you supposed to talk? I know I'm horrible at breaking the ice conversation anyhow. Should I just solidify that I'm a crazy cat lady and talk about my cat instead? People like animals right? Or I can talk about chinchillas. Everybody loves a good chinchilla story.
All of these thoughts ran through my head as I was en route to my first appointment with Katie, and my first massage therapy appointment ever. Within the first few minutes of meeting Katie, all of the awkwardness was gone. She is really down to earth and focused on addressing individual needs. Not only does she aid in correcting twenty plus years of bad posture, she explains what everything is. I now know what fascia is and how important it is to my muscles and posture. Google it...then take some fish oil. Seriously.
This might be a little presumptuous as she is the only massage therapist I've seen, but I say that Katie is the best massage therapist. End of story.Comment from Katie J. of Intuitive Bodywork 10/26/2010

I've been to Katie twice in recent months for lingering lower back issues, and I believe she made a significant difference in my recovery. She knows her anatomy and has an excellent sense of how much pressure to deliver and where. Her rates are also extremely reasonable. I highly recommend her!

I saw Katie after a car accident, and I have to say she is amazing. Not only did she provide relief from the pain, but she also was a great listener to both what I said and how my body reacted. I felt exponentially better after the first session, and each session after improved more. On top of that she handled all the billing for the insurance and patiently explained what she was doing and why.

Katie is the best at deep tissue massage. She feels the body and the muscles at a very intuitive level and is really able to focus on areas that need work the most during each of the sessions. Also, I appreciate the innovating approaches that Katie has introduced me to and that have made a big difference in reducing my back pain (eg. some of the front muscles really impacting the back pain and others). After one of the sessions, I literally felt 50 pounds lighter because of the way Katie was able to work on some of the less obvious muscles. Katie is also very pleasant to interact with and I learn a lot from her every time. I highly recommend Katie to anyone considering massage.

Katie Joannes is a wonderful mixture of versatile, knowledgeable, and professional. She's adept at responding to my requests without neglecting muscular needs that she encounters during the session. I'm particularly impressed with Katie's approach to deep tissue - she's skilled at making it enjoyable without skimping on technique. Last but not least, she's sweet and friendly, but won't talk your ear off during the whole session unless you want her to!
