Review Highlights
I don't believe there ever has been nor will there ever be a time when I go to Boulder and don't stop here. If nothing else to replenish my supply of nose whistles (yes they do carry them)
I think this is one of the greatest toy stores ever because they don't offer the all the hyped-up copyrighted themed toys. This place has toy class. A great place to find your next white elephant gift, gag gift, or toy that doesn't come with a gun or different clothes.
A limited preview of some of the things they offer:
Bouncy balls the size of softballs, kites of course, miniature animals, tons of different wind-up toys, one of those little dudes that you squeeze and his eyes and ears pop out, finger puppets, marionettes, puzzles, many different types of plastic animals that squirt water, a wide selection of hackey sacks, and buttons that have phrases such as "Thanks to drugs I can smell colors again."
The last time we visited they had a colored marble tree on which you dropped a marble or two and each branch that it hit, made a different note. I would love to own one of those.
:)
I'm actually shocked I never wrote a review for this place while I lived in Boulder (since I was in here many times). Anyway, a solid four star place. My family and I had loads of fun playing in here. It's a place where adults and kids alike can play & explore all the fun educational & just crazy things they have in stock. It's a great place to buy gifts too. Their inventory ranges from gorgeous kites to various types of rubber duckies, and everything in between. Hard to describe what this shop is all about (though kites seem to be the prevailing theme, along with wind socks & the like). This place really deserves a browsing if you're on the Pearl Street Mall.
I seriously buy all my Xmas presents from here. Cool smart toys for kids of all ages and grown ups
Fantastic toy store that stocks a lot more than kites. Filled to the brim with things to capture imagination of children and rekindle the imagination of us adults.
Kids these days - sheesh - wanting cell phones, digital cameras, and all that jazz we adults accessorize ourselves with. This place reminds us adults of that precious time when we were children and things were so brightly colored and awesome-r.
Jenna D has it right the stuff in the bins is awesome! Hurrah for digging!
So how does a kite store manage to stay in business for years in one of the city's most high-rent areas? Good question, especially when the Dunkin Donuts a mere 12 or so blocks away couldn't make it?
Mafia front? Maybe. But it's more likely the result of years of great service and a store filled with quirky diversions for hobbyists and youngsters. Of course, you can get more than kites there, such as the ubiquitous Frisbee. But with so many wonderful parks--and the wacky Front Range wind-- in Boulder you can never have enough kites and Frisbees.
Pros: Best kite store I've ever been to, and great service as well.
Cons: I live in California... why is this store in Colorado? : )
I was in Denver and Boulder for a short weekend trip and stumbled upon this store by just walking by. I flew stunt kites as a kid and never really thought much about getting back into the sport. A couple of minutes browsing later, I convinced myself and my friends to spend over an hour at the store, and I ended up with three kites.
How? They have a great selection, almost everything in their online catalog is also in stock so you can see it. On top of that, they added great service. Even though the store was jammed full of people on that busy weekend afternoon, a member of their staff was very attentive and helped me select the kite for my goals. He also gave me great, honest insight on price/performance reviews of the kites in their selection.
I would highly recommend this store if you're looking to get into kiting, or just a great browse-shop experience. Hey, can you guys open a store here in San Francisco? There is literally not a single performance kite shop in the entire Bay Area.
No matter how old a kid you are, this is a great toy store. Not your barbie doll, remote control car kinds of toys but thought provoking often kinetic and inventive kinds of gadgets, widgets, doohickeys, and thiingamabobs that fly, whistle, boggle and bedazzle even us wayyy old kids. Great for the younger kids too.
If you don't like Into the Wind, you have no soul and a heart that's black and cold. Go here. Play with the stuff in the bins. Try a puzzle or two or twelve. Leave with a package of glowing star stickers. Nuff Said.
Into The Wind is one of those stores that will inspire you to new and silly hobbies. It reminds me of the Wizard's Chest back in Denver, only with a little more class and a little less geekiness.
As the name implies, Into The Wind specializes kites. Really good kites. Stunt kiting is a hobby of mine, and the veterans at Into The Wind are legendary in the kiting community, partly because they've been around for so long. Take a look at the ceiling and all around the store and you'll see that they clearly know their kites. If you're a beginner or just a casual kite flier, they have fun shaped kites like sail ships, and simpler kite designs like their popular Hata. They also sell a few models of simple delta kites in a number of sizes. The real draw is in the two lined stunt kites. They carry stunt kites from many, many manufacturers including my favorite, Prism. First time stunt fliers can pick up Prism's Nexus, Quantum or Hypnotist, all excellent kites for the curious beginner. Into the Wind also sells foil kites and Quad line kites, though you'll have to head to the back of the store to see those.
Besides kites they also sell tons and tons of toys, skill toys and a plethora of gadgetry to bring out the kid in any adult. It goes without saying that kids swarm around this place. Yo-yos, splatter balls, tops, juggling bags, sound based toys, light based toys, they have everything.
If you're into the kite part, ask about their bargain bin. There's a bargain bin in the back of the store, of course, but apparently there's a secret bargain bin in the back office where they do the mail ordering. That bargain bin has some good items that were either lightly used or taken back after little to no use. I got a Prism Speedbag and a Prism Quantum Pro this way and saved a good deal of money.
Unfortunately prices are very high, and if you shop around for high end kites elsewhere on the internet you'll find that the prices Into the Wind charges will make you balk. But that's part of the cost of owning a store on Pearl Street, and its up to you, the consumer whether you'll support a fantastic local store. I chose to do so when the bargain bin came to play, but on a still very limited budget I'm not sure whether my shopping ethics could overcome an empty wallet.
But that's really only for the kites. If you're taking a walk down Pearl Street, this is a required stop for kids and adults.
One of my favorite places to visit when I'm walking around Pearl Street. Founded by a couple of architects, Into the Wind has an impressive array of kites, frisbees, educational toys, and tons of humorous toys and gizmos. The store is a favorite for little kids and kids at heart (you know who you are).
Yeah! Kites for kite lovers [only]. That means YOU, kidz! Fun colorz of all colors. All sizes shapes. Whirlers, swirlers, twirlerz. Spinners...what have you. Clearly, this is where you come when you need a kite or a kite needs you.
Such a fun store....great place to find gifts!!
this store is the best. for kids, and grownups. totally fun. bright and colorful. and the potheads that work there just add to the atmosphere.
