10 reviews for Intiraymi Restaurants Peruvian Food
Wow, this place is amazing. I'd give it 4.5 stars, but I'm rounding up. They were out of Aji de Gallina (my unit of measurement for how good a Peruvian place is) however, their other dishes we tried were wonderful and 6-10 dollars each. Plus there's a huge mural of llamas on the wall. You can't beat that.
Papa rellena was huge and mashed potatoey goodness inside with spiced meat and boiled egg. Perfection! Lomo saltado pretty much can't be screwed up, but we could tell they did it right. The squid dish was basically calamari at a super cheap price. My boyfriend was going nuts over the idea of leftovers. And Aji sauce was better than the usual. Nice and spicy.. basically good on anything it touched. Chica morada and Inka cola are of course the staples and available as beverage choices.
I'll be back for sure- nothing else has reminded me so much of my favorite Peruvian place ever, El Dorado, located in San Diego county (closer to Mexico really). It has that same hole in the wall low cost perfection that the other places just can't compete with.
2.5 stars. Took some time to trek down to the edge of Chinatown/Olvera Plaza to try Intiraymi for lunch. Glad it's there, but I've had better Peruvian fare.
Yes, it's a bit of a hole in the wall. The starter chicken soup was really good, and tasted much like ones I've had in Peru, minus the flies. The lomo saltado was quite a let down. It was a bit soupy/watery and I found that the beef strips lacked the caramelization. Fries also lacked that intensity and were a bit overly soggy. There was a modest amount of tomato in the stir fry and all topped with chopped cilantro, rice on the side. Bread and butter... well, margarine, are served along with the classic Peruvian green sauce, ají verde, which packs quite a bit of heat, compared to others I've tried. I might try their rotisserie chicken since the lomo was weak.
Service was friendly and adequate. The dining room is pretty clean, but the decor is simple and a little "homey". Parking was a bit chaotic in the small, tight lot. Prices are all right, a bit high for the quality offered. I didn't find the quantity to be that big, although I took some leftover home, but mainly because I was short on time. A glass of chicha morada will set you back $2, but it was refreshing, though I'm not sure if it was made from scratch or from powder "koolaid" form. I ended up tossing the leftovers the next day because it smelled "funny", despite being refrigerated like I do for other leftovers.
Verdict: not convinced about the quality, but it is run by Peruvians, and it's nice to have that diversity and choice right here in the heart of L.A. They take credit cards, but note that they are closed on Thursdays. Might go back if I'm craving peruvian (except lomo here) and find myself in the vicinity, but "meh, I've had better".
This restaurant is located in the heart of LA... within walking distance of Union Station, Olvera Street, and China Town.
Amazing prices, HUGE portions, delicious food! and friendly service!
Not the most amazing decor, but they do have a huge tv playing futbol! and whatever Latin news you need! :)
Love it! Try the ceviche, jalea, the aji de gallina, or the lomo saltado!
For desert get the alfajores!
And then purchase a liter of Inka Cola to take home after a great meal!
The epitome of hole in the wall !! Located next to chinatown and olvera street, Intiryami looks more like a liquor store than a restaurant.
When you look at the menu, the prices might be a little steep, but what vivian k. said, all the meals are fit for a king. The portions are huge !! I had the lomo saltado with inka kola as my beverage. Inka kola is basically Peru's main soda. It's not bad, but it looks like piss yellow. The lomo saltado is sauteed steak with onions, tomatoes, and potatoes(that look like french fries) with a bowl of white rice. My friend had one of the cheap chicken combo meals. I remembered she said the chicken was soft, and warm. Sorry, I was too busy ferociously devouring my lomo saltado !!
There is no real decor to the restaurant, but you're basically for the delicious food right?
The staff is very friendly and polite also.
Beware. Parking in the little plaza is a hassle, so I'm not sure if they validate parking!!
get the steaks n eggs plate - won't disapoint. A meal fit for a king for just 7-9 bucks a person. i got my friend hooked on this place and you'll be too.
it'd get more stars if it werent for the decor consisting mainly of that peruvian animal called a llama.
My first time at a Peruvian restaurant. We came with a group of friends for a weekday work lunch. Nice little place at the edge of Chinatown and Olvera Street. They had a TV with a spanish soccer game on. Friendly waiter.
I had combo #3 - the roasted chicken is really good! Great lime-y and grilled flavor. The beans were okay. I'd like to try their french fries next time. Are french fries peruvian?
My friend had #25 the Chaufa Mixto de Carne y Pollo (Beef and Chicken fried rice) was really good too. I would get that again next time.
Other friend had the seafood soup. Ehh, so-so in my opinion.
For drinks we had the Maracuya (Passion Fruit juice). Refreshing! Note that the juice is included with the combo meal for only $5.95.
What a deal! 7 bucks for soup, half a chicken, salad, and fries.
The half chicken was succulent and flavorful. Can't decide between white or dark? Well, you get both! The dark, IMHO, is clearly better than the white.
Beware the green sauce: it is hotter than it looks.
The place boasts wood fired chicken. This caught my eyes, and then I saw the $5.95 special. Sounds good, I entered to order a couple of take outs.
I was walking by the area after visiting Mayflower Chinese Restaurant checking out the stores and restaurants on the same block. This place looks like a shack from the outside but it's actually a restaurant with full menu (I would have never guessed it from the outside). As I entered, I saw two beef dishes fly by me, carried by a waitress, and those beef looked huge and really good, my jaws dropped good. I made a mental note to remember this place and promptly headed towards the order counter.
The two specials I ordered came with large chicken breast and wing, also Included was a decent size cup of beans, rice, drink and couple of those green cilantro sauces in small container.
Very good chicken, moist and flavorful, even the chicken skin was good (I normally discard chicken skins but this was an exception). The beans had this nice mild fresh flavor, had this addictive taste but I can't pinpoint why it was good, it was just good. The rice was rice, plain and starchy.
The sauce was good, the chili flavor really stood out, on the strong side but tasted fresh and pleasant (It's not too hot, has a strong bold chili flavor though). For drinks I got an orange thing, kind of tasted like Sunny Delight and a purple drink (some kind of fruit).
I kept the orange and gave the other drink to the parking attendant for giving me a great space near the attendant's shack (Lots of space, no door dings baby!).
Solid peruvian food. Food has an interesting flavor, similar to the wok taste of chinese restaurants, maybe its just because the restaurant is on the border of Chinatown. Either way, great Arroz chaufa mixto and great service. I had the Lomo Saltado one time which wasn't too bad, but not my favorite and I'd probably rather get other things on the menu. The aji sauce is very good. I'll defintely be a repeat customer.
See, told you I'd be a repeat customer. Just to chime in again...went back with some friends for lunch a month or two ago...had the ceviche which was delicious. (added Dec 21, 2007)
short n simple excellent prices and they dont skimp on the shrimp....beautiful Peruvian people around us enjoying their sunday dinner..I will eat their again......
