Ah Roswell, NM the UFO Capital of the world. But did you know they are also the Dairy Capital of the world with over 1 billion lbs of milk produced a year? Who gives a crap about milk when you can go see a mock up of an alien autopsy!

Knowing that our recent road trip would take us through Roswell, NM I insisted that we take a tour of the IUMRC. Entering the alien district was fun, the streetlight lamps are shaped like alien heads and there are a ton of gift shops and of course the world famous museum. We entered the museum and the lobby looked promising with alien statues plus it was bustling with tourists. There is a world map on the wall where you can stick a push-pin on your home town (there were a lot from Houston), my niece enjoyed that as she was the only one from England.

The museum itself is ok, unfortunately I let my imagination run away and ended up thinking it would be more than it was. Basically a huge room sectioned off with walls filled with the time-line of the Roswell incident, pictures, sworn statements (or copies of), some alien art, movie posters and the fake autopsy. It looked more like a high school science fair than a museum, on the sterile side and aesthetically boring. I did get a chuckle when I came upon a drawing of basic alien types. There is the Watcher at 5'6", the Grey at 4/9", the Brown at 5'4", the Mantis at 5'6", the Humanoid at 6'8" and the Bigfoot at 7'4". What? Bigfoot is thrown in that mix (and I wonder about the mantis also)? I've always wondered where he/she originated from. Maybe that's why there are only occasional sightings.

I'm thinking it goes like this:
1. Bigfoot comes to earth to gather plant samples or whatever
2. Bigfoot is spotted walking through a forest, glen, etc.
3. "Holy crap, it's bigfoot. Sissy grab the camera!"
4. Bigfoot runs away whilst we take conveniently blurred photos
5. They abort their mission only to return at at later date

I will tell you if I ever see a Mantis, I will more than likely tuck my tail and run. For some reason it is more accepting being boldly curious about a 7 foot hairy creature than a 5 foot insectoid. Maybe it's that cuddly furry thing the Bigfoot has going for them.

The gift shop at the museum has the best selection of t-shirts and gifts in town. Don't bother going elsewhere unless you just want to have a look around (the prices are the same also). There is also a photo booth at the front of the museum where they can photoshop you with a group of aliens or trying to get into Area 51.

This is a tough one because we only paid $2 with old student IDs. It isn't however by any means a research facility and it's pretty cheesy. That being said however, it's an amusing walk through if you have some time to kill and can pay the discounted rate.

As cheesy as this place may appear, its really much more than meets the eye! The museum is just very kitsch and one of those places you have to say you've seen at least once! While the research center actually offers a lot in the way of  pop culture UFO research that you won't find anywhere else. I've wanted to see this place ever since the tv show "Roswell" dealt with it, yeah the tv version is less cheesy but still. It was a dream come true to see this place and Roswell NM :-P

Luckily, this place was on the way from Carlsbad Caverns to Albuquerque. It is a bit underwhelming. We set up similar exhibits when we made a haunted house in the back classrooms at my high school. I guess that aspect is kind of what endeared the museum to me. It was very very cheap to get in. The town of Roswell is tiny, but unique. The gift shop is also fun. They even provide a pamphlet of "anal probe" jokes for you to tell while walking around. The funny thing is this place is world famous and seen on national tv alien stories. But i could have built it in my garage last winter. For clevelanders unwilling to travel to New Mexico, just pop into Starship Earth or John' s Funhouse halloween costume shops for a similar experience.

First of all, this is NOT a research center.  The only research they do is compiling a list of newspaper articles, magazines, journals,  TV, comic books, movies, toys, books, etc... that even remotely relate to UFOs.  They then tell you stories about the many different theories of the Roswell cover-up and how they have "proof" that aliens have been visiting earth for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.

The place is very hokey and probably isn't much of a museum either.  I gave it two stars because after about an hour my friend and I were thoroughly frightened and decided to leave town as soon as possible.  So no, not coming back.

It's 2 am.

You're driving toward Roswell.

A coyote goes zipping by on the road.

You're head is bobbing around because you're starting to fall asleep at the wheel.

Then you see it.

Lights...on the horizon.

Yeah, so they were just radio towers, but still! ;D

The fake alien autopsy scene is great. The whole place smells of dust and sweat. There are tons of thick glasses being worn and lots of giggles.

Definitely a place to drop by if you're in the neighborhood....no anal probes that I remember though.. ;)

My 100th review!  ... had to be something cool and kitschy

Signs for this place line the highway going towards Roswell.  Yes, you know it's going to be cheezy.  Yes, you can tell the tackiness factor is high.  But what the heck!  You're heading towards Roswell and there's only one thing to do...
get your Alien on!

This old-school museum is definitely nothing spectacular but I promise you will learn a few new things - which is what museums are all about now, isn't it.  The walls are lined with copies of newspaper articles on the Roswell incident, court documents, police statements, photographs, quotes...
It does get pretty in depth and there is a whole "research library" which we didn't have time (or, if truth be told, interest) for.

It's clear that there are a lot of stories from the 1947 incident and even more opinions about it... beware... yours may change after you leave this place.  (end with X-files music)

We drove a day out of our way to visit this tacky wonderland and I'm happy I did. It's up there with the biggest ball of twine and the corn palace of south dakota as places that you don't need to see but are so much fun to go to. It's filled with silly diaromas and displays. It's not that large and can be viewed in an hour.  I loved the christmas tree with only alien themed decorations. Is this a serious place? Is it classy or tasteful? Oh hell no, but it is wonderful in it's chessiness. Be sure to check out the UFO shaped McDonald's.

No trip to Roswell is complete without a trip to the Museum!

This place is seriously fun, although be careful some people take things way toooooo seriously. I make no judgments ~ just an observation.

Aside from the grumpy old security guard that did not take kindly to our chuckles we had a great time.

The gift shop is crazy anything & everything you could ever want is there. Bring your money cuz their is no way your leaving without tons of memorabilia. ~ and who'd want to!

At first I was disappointed when arriving in Roswell as I thought the whole town would be more "alien-y" but when arriving at the UFO Musuem my thrist for all things ET were quenched.

I would make sure that you have at least an hour to check out the museum and, if you are wanting to see any of the videos they offer (I didn't have time) or thoroughly go through all exhibits, allow more time than that.

The exhibits on the 1947 incident entail lots of reading...signed affadavits, eyewitness accounts, conspiracy theories etc.  Some are more interesting than others so linger as necessary.  There are also exhibits on modern day UFO sightings/encounters and hoaxes.

There are definitely some weirdos who are attracted to this stuff which only enhances the experience.

The material supporting a cover-up in 1947 is rather convincing and kept my date and I talking about that instead of fighting about the car temperature for the whole drive to Carlsbad Caverns!

this museum is the weirdest museum i have been to in the history of EVER, and i've been to a lot of museums.

first of all, it's really tiny, one big room and a gift shop (which is full of crap. alien covered crap.) the displays are obviously made by fifth graders, because they're simply printouts on construction paper pasted to poster board. everything i read in the museum, i knew already from the x-files, which, incidentally, there was also a poster of - in the museum, not the gift shop.

when i went, it was just past christmas, and the place was still decorated for it. of course - don't ALL museums decorate for christmas? how did i know it was decorated for christmas? well, at one end of the museum, on a small stage, there was a fake plastic tree adorned with alien ornaments.

however, nothing will top the horse statue with the santa hat, prominently displayed. the horse, which i assume is always there, was pasted with photocopies of news articles about aliens, and then COVERED IN GLITTER. and now, just in time for the holiday season, ADORNED WITH A SANTA HAT. it pretty much had nothing to do with aliens, which is pretty much why i loved it.

(a pictures of said horse is available for your viewing pleasure, too, up there, in the pictures section of this review.)

I really liked this place when I visited it.  They focus on the 1947 Roswell incident and have tons of info on that to bring you up to speed.  They also have information on lots of other sighing and incidents around the world.  Admission is by donation only and they have a huge library on the UFO topic that you could spend days at reading books and archived first hand accounts of sightings and encounters.  Definitely a must see if you're in Roswell.

LOL! This place is unreal. If you make it to Roswell, you have to drop by. Lots of research material (including a library) and displays galore. It's truly amazing how much energy they put into this place! I'll post some photos for you all.
