I've now had two laser-tattoo removal sessions here and another piece done by Jeff. They continue to impress me with their spotless facility and great customer service. The staff reflects the hard work that Bob has put in to running such a professional establishment. And Jeff? Heart him. Go see him! He is a very talented artist.
*Side note, on a scale of 1-10 - 10 being the most painful, laser tattoo would be about a 7,492,351. However, Dr. Morosco & Co. will do their best to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. The second wasn't nearly as bad (maybe a 9?). And $75 a session is a great deal! Go see Hindsight Tattoo Removal if you regret that tramp stamp or ridiculous Asian lettering tattoo you got when you were 18. (insert awkward cough here)1 Previous Review: Show all »

After a hellish second semester of nursing school was done with, I decided that a present to myself would be to finally get my septum pierced. Insight Studios in Chicago was, of course, my first choice. I've gotten 2 stellar piercings done by master piercer and all around great dude, Bob Jones, previously so naturally I wouldn't go anywhere else.
I've got nothing but good things to say about this shop and the man that owns it. The following is just one example as to why Insight is top notch:
Bob pierced my septum and as it turned out, he wasn't satisfied with the placement of the piercing. Since my nose is on the smaller side, the amount of room he had to work with was less than usual. He adjusted the piercing a few times and even tried a different piece of jewelry but nope, he still didn't feel comfortable sending me out the door with a piercing he wasn't completely satisfied with. I had 2 friends with me in the room this day and they both said that the piercing looked good and they didn't see anything wrong with it. Bob Jones takes pride in his work and has been piercing since the dawn of time so if he said that he wasn't satisfied with it then I was 100% okay with that. I trusted him enough to be okay with him removing the piercing and then trying again in about a week or so.
NOW, many other shops out there would have been just fine with giving me an unsatisfactory piercing, taking my money, and sending me out the door without me not knowing any better, but not Bob. I will say again that he takes great pride in his work and is definitely one of the best out there.
Today I revisited the shop and Bob pierced my septum again. It's a flawless piercing and I love it.
Overall, Bob Jones runs a clean, HONEST, and talented shop. This has been and will always be my place to go.
PS. My 2 piercings that were done by Bob about a year ago healed quickly and perfectly. No issues whatsoever!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Okay seriously, Insight Studios really lives up to all the 5 star reviews on Yelp.
I'd always been on and off about getting a helix piercing. But then lately, I said screw it, I'll just do it. I walked into Insight Studios with the intention of just checking the place out, but the girl at the counter said I could get my piercing today (without an appointment) and I wouldn't have to wait long.
The place is sparkling clean. Each tattoo area has dividers that separate them from each other. The piercing area was in a separate room. I didn't have to wait long at all before Bob was ready to see me. He was very good at listening to what I wanted and didn't have this "I know better than you" attitude. He's very easy to converse with, and he constantly made sure that I was comfortable and asking if I was okay.
The tattoo area is very nice and also sterile like the rest of the place. I really appreciate the fact that Bob always told me when he was going to put in the needle so that I was prepared for it. After the piercing, he patiently explained after-care and answered all my questions.
Credit card accepted. I got three piercings and the total price made my eyes bug out a little, but when it comes to tattoos/piercings, that is one area where you want the best you can get and you shouldn't scrimp!
Highly recommend! :)
I only wish there were more benches/chairs in the waiting area, and that I got to pick the type of jewelry for my piercing.
Man, piercing are so ADDICTIVE and I want more!!!! :D -

I have gotten 3 tattoos at Insight and won't go anywhere else in Chicago.
My first tattoo here (4th total) was a fairly large owl on my inner arm. Ryan was my artist and - let me tell you - he did a fantastic job. I get compliments on it all the time from random people on the street. I didn't have a great idea of what I wanted other than "I want it to look like it belongs in my vintage owl collection" and he came up with a great sketch. But I think the colors he came up with are my favorite part. He also didn't seem annoyed by my slight wimpy-ness, and I even got a lollipop when I was done!
My other tattoos were just script, so I didn't bother Ryan for those. They turned out great too! They are extremely clean and professional and I trust every single person that gets hired by Insight. -
Review from Courtney O.

While not covered head-to-toe in tattoos, I am no stranger to them, either. Three on my back, three on my arms, and a quarter sleeve. And now, the beginning of a half sleeve on my other (formerly empty) upper arm.
That said, Insight Studios is absolutely, unequivocally, undeniably top of the line. While I've read all the glowing reviews here on trusty 'ol Yelp, I couldn't help but wonder (I know, I know...I'm a skeptical pessimist at times) could Insight REALLY be THAT good? I mean...really?
In a word, YES.
As pretty much everyone else has mentioned, Insight is pristine. But not only is it pristine, it's also really, really welcoming. Ever walk into a shop and feel that "you're soooooo not cool enough" vibe? You won't get that here. Not at all.
Yesterday, I had my first appointment with David Allen. You can be damn well certain it won't be my last. David, aside from being one of the nicest, friendliest, and most awesome people I've ever met *ever*, is an astounding artist. He takes incredible pride in his work, for one, and reasonably should be charging more than double what he asks per hour. No, really. Just check out his portfolio. It is seriously sick. It blew me away. And at my appointment yesterday, he did NOT disappoint. I left Insight wildly in love...with my left upper arm. It's so beautiful that my arm itself is getting a super inflated ego.
Another feather in David's cap is that he's upfront with his estimation of time the tattoo will take as well as the cost. He's not in it to scam you out of cash, or d-r-a-g your session out unnecessarily. This, in my opinion, is huge in and of itself. He's not a beginner at this, my friends. He's a master craftsman. He's quick but does not rush whatsoever, and once you lay your little eyes on the finished product, you might want to live at Insight for the rest of your days just to beg David to tattoo you every single time he steps foot in the shop.
If you take anything from this review, here's what you need to grab:
1. David Allen is an amazing artist. If you've got someone else doing your work...why? You're being full of fail, I'm sorry to say. Get thee to David!
2. Insight Studios is not only insanely clean, but it's filled with a lot of friendly people who aren't in the game of making you feel...uncool and lame.
3. I'm willing to bet a limb that you'd be hard-pressed to find better quality at any other shop in the entire Chicagoland area--and beyond. A limb, people. A limb.
If I could give Insight Studios a million stars, I would. Less than 24 hours post my new tattoo, I emailed David to request another appointment. I mean. come on...this is the real deal, yo. Check it out! And make sure you book with David.
(Note: I almost didn't want to write this review because now I know y'all are going to try to get an appointment with David and fill up his already insanely booked schedule, but even still...I absolutely had to. It's so well deserved.) -

I actually ended up here by accident, but that'll come later. As for the studio - it's awesome. The chick at the desk promptly took care of me and was quite friendly. The shop is beyond extremely clean, almost glowing and the piercing area is secluded from the tatooing stations. The best part, Bob the owner is the piercer. Bob was very calming during the entire procedure and made sure I understood how to take care of the area upon completion. People are dumb not to use your studio.
I went on & one for over a year about wanting to get my nose pierced again & my roommate finally said, just go get it done already. Initially I drove to a shop in bucktown that apparently no longer does piercings (update your damn website) and recommended I go across the street - I asked about Insight & they said no and that the other place was their official recommendation. Okay, okay I'll take your advice - I mean you are in the business. When I walked into their recommended spot, a gentleman was helping a customer and looked at me, once he finished he said nothing to me and walked back behind a curtain blocked off area and never came back. So like an idiot I stood there for a couple minutes and still nothing and because of the way the shop is set up, I couldn't even see if anyone had acknowledged I was there. As I continued waiting like a fool I saw a "cash only" sign for piercings and was like well this is dumb, I have no cash and this place clearly doesn't even want my business, so I walked out and ended up at Insight and it was the best accident to happen.
Thanks Insight - if I ever ink I'll be back. -
Review from Gina S.
I had been thinking about getting my nose pierced for quite some time, but never came across a studio I felt completely comfortable with. After extensive research and a beaming review from Candice G. and countless other yelpers, I decided to go to Insight and see Bob.
My first thoughts when I walked in: immaculate and sterile. Really, I mean the place is spotless. A very good sign. While I was waiting, they received a large delivery of medical/sterilization supplies. Another good sign lol.
The girl at the front desk was really nice and helpful. After filling out the paperwork and reading a pamphlet, I waited amongst a large group of friends who were all getting tattoos. There was such excitement/nervousness in the air, it started to rub off on me, and my stomach knotted up...eek!
There was one girl in front of me to get pierced so I only waited like 10 minutes. Bob came to get me, gave me the soap and took me into the back room. He really eased my tension with lighthearted conversation and seemed like a friendly, genuine guy. He explained every step of the way what he was doing, and talked me through the process. Before I knew it, it was done! I hopped up and checked it out. Love it!
I plan on getting another tattoo in the spring, and will be going to Insight for sure. So glad I went here:) -

I like tattoos. I started with two flash tattoos and progressed to big kid tattoos. By big kid tattoos I mean custom pieces of art designed for me by awesome artists.
My sleeve is an eclectic mess of large unrelated pieces, all by the same artist. He's had free range over my body canvas for a few years.
A few months ago I bought a deal on yelp ($25 for $50) for Insight Studios.
Their front desk gal was super friendly and helpful to not only me, but the many, many walk-ins who were pouring in looking to get various piercings and tattoos.
I was introduced to an artist after a little wait time. James Eastwood sketched up an excellent, simple piece after I simply said "I'd like a champagne bottle with a banner that reads 'Sunday'." I chose to go today because 100% of their walk-in proceeds were donated to the Greater Ferret Association (A shelter in Lyons). Not only were they doing that today but continue to hold charitable events to benefit The Anti-Cruelty Society and other Chicago based animal shelters. Awesome.
James was friendly, talkative when I was, and quiet and focused when I needed to focus on breathing through a sensitive spot.
The place was super clean. Super professional. Good tunes. Easy to get to by CTA or if you're a driver there's plenty of parking.
I left with an great piece and some free tattoo lotion. I will definitely be coming back here for more work as soon as I can.
I give this $$$---it's "pricey" because tattoos aren't cheap but you get the work you pay for and I was happy to make it rain on James. -
Review from Blake H.
Most of my tattoo experiences are impulsive & usually after some day drinking (yikes, i know). However, I purchased a deal at some Yelp event like almost a year ago. Its on the other side of town so I never really found time to do it, but I realized that it was about to expire so I hopped on a bus. Long story short, I didn't plan it or make an appointment, or even have like a concrete idea. Plus I was sober...
Brian was my artist and HE WAS AWESOME. All I said was 'wine barrel' and he made this absolutely gorgeous piece of art on my thigh. He even took a picture of it claiming he had never tattoo'd a wine barrel before.
He was awesome, my tattoo is great, and the place is even worth the trek out there. I will be getting the rest of my (planned) tattoos at inspire and hopefully with brian. I will also be pointing those in need of tattoo-advice in their direction. -

I finished my quarter sleeve after many 5 months and 3 laser removal sessions (also at Insight/Hindsight - you can see my review on that) and 2 sits that lasted about 5.5 hours. I know the big question on your mind is....but you can only park on the street for 2 hours at a time! How did you do it? Magic and superior patience and parking prowess.
To be honest, I've gotten work done in 5 shops all over the US and although that might not be enough to have a statistical sampling of "a lot" but Insight is legitimately one of the best, for several reasons - Bob is cool, he runs an amazing shop with some of the most talented artists - Brian who did my work is one of the best - creative, amazing lines, freehand, and does the best Polynesian inspired work in the Midwest. I brought in some ideas and he was able to turn it into the quarter sleeve I have today.
The studio itself is modern, spotless - see other reviews on that - and very few flash books. They pride themselves on customer work and can design the smallest script to the largest arm, back, and chest pieces.
Everyone I refer will be to Insight - whether removal, new work, and touch-up's. I can't say what already hasn't been said. I think there are several things which impact your view about your tattoo - the environment and space, the people/artists, and the overall design of your tattoo. Clearly with everything being said, Insight has gotten it done.
So go, run, don't walk to I.S. if you're looking to get any work done. -

5 Stars in the Pink and 5 Stars in Ink.
Okay, by 'pink' I technically mean 'piercing' but my piercing ala Bob "The Cat Loving, Great White Shark Diving, Kevin Bacon Stir of Echoes Stunt-Double Hand Piercing, Fearless Leader" Jones was in a pink-y mucus membrane area. The septum- to be exact. And please note your septum is not part of the vagina (like a few of my friends had thought- WTF, Guys? I'm not THAT bold) , it just sounds like it could be a the name of something vajay relay...ted. But believe me, there's a Vas Deferens between a septum and vagay piercing... hehe- you see what I did there? #TooCleverGirl
I had several fantasmo experiences here with my piercing, one of which was my rude azz just showing up unannounced on Bob's only day off (Mondays, if you were wondering) hoping to get my sh*t pierced. Obvi, without Bob the Piercing God there I was getting no new holes in my head- BUT the sweet as peaches shop girl gave me a flyer for $20 off when I did come back in and an apology- what?! That's a pretty sweet ass deal considering it was my stupid ass mistake for not asking about his schedule first (What?! You mean Bob doesn't just live there 24/7? preposterous!).
My septum piercing didn't hurt in the least- defo thought Bob was drawing a dot on my septum and when I was done blinking I saw the bar through my nose. Literally felt like less than a pen marking your skin. No blood. No sweat. and Not even a reflexive tear was shed in the process. And Bob let's you bring a buddy in the piercing room if you'd like. I brought my main man-friend (platonic- but ladies, he's single + entrepreneur), Ed S. in with me.
The convo w/ Bob, Ed, and I on my 2nd visit and Bob and I on my 3rd visit to get my jewelry changes was seamless, comfortable, and not forced like when I have one-on-one services rendered at other places. Just an easy guy to talk to with lots of interesting stories.
Suggestion of topics (should you want to hear some real entertainers):
*Piercing on the 'Stir of Echoes' set, complete with directors cut commentary
*True Romance vs Natural Born Killers
*Cats, Kittens, Treehouse Cat Shelter, Indy the Awesome-O Cat
*Great White Shark Diving Expeditions & Respect for wild animals
Srsly- Such a cool guy and I'm more and more impressed each time I go in. Next time might be for s'more inkies m'thinks.
Prices, to me, were not only worth every.red.cent but seemed downright inexpensive for the goods offered and services rendered at this 'cleaner than my f*cking Dr.'s office (back when I had health insurance)' tattoo and piercing studio.
I WILL be back, I WILL keep my eyes peeled for more of their Charity events (usually Saturdays) where a % of the price of your service goes to Tree House Cat Shelter... oh, and if Bob is too modest to accept the full amount of your tip (of which he fully deserves), be an angel and slip it on in their cash collection box for Tree House. Every little bit helps and a few months back some low-lifes came into the shop and made off with the collection box. #Fuckers. So, there's that.

Review from Reuben H.
I'm going to get straight to the point on this one.
Come here if you are in need of, wanting, or even just considering a tattoo. I came across nothing but unpretentious professionalism in the form of artists who were all incredibly talented.
A bit of background here: after getting my first tattoo nearly 13 years ago (damn, that dates me!), I've been wanting another one for a while. It took me years to even figure out what I wanted in terms of a context, and that didn't even get me an idea of exact content.
After messing around with some sketches and some digital programs to distort photos, I had a good GENERAL idea of what that would be- an homage to the skyline of Chicago set in the dark of night along the reflection of the lake. It would become a band around my teeny-tiny upper arm (I've been sick for nearly 6 months- cut me some slack!) with the skyline fading on each side into the image of the Chicago municipal flag in order to bind together each side of the skyline sketch.
Run-on sentence much?
Why yes, yes I do!
Back to the lesson at hand, I was able to draft an image that I thought represented my idea well enough to convey my overly long talking style into something tangible. Next step- locate artist who could execute said image.
Thanks to the help (rather Yelp) of some friends, Insight was clearly the spot I needed. After looking over the portfolios of the different artists there, I knew that a walk in without a special request for anyone in particular would be something I was comfortable with.
All of this lead to Ryan, my tattoo hero. A bit short on words, but polite and friendly none the less, Ryan was able to take my somewhat crappy draft, create his own sketch off of it, and size it perfectly for application. He went over some difficulties and challenges but also explained how it would be done so that it would look right. He wasn't afraid at all to suggest some modifications to my original plan in the name of aesthetics. I of course obliged and am happy to have put my self (really- just my arm) into his trusty and talented hands.
A lot of detail work was needed just for the outline, which lead to three separate sessions and approximately seven hours total of work done. The end result, in my opinion, is incredible and even better than I first imagined it. Maybe not the most original in ideas, but completely unique in execution and form- and I have Ryan to thank for that.
If I didn't say it already enough- thank you, Ryan! Thank you especially for my wife's piece, which like her is gorgeous, unique and memorable. It was totally put together off of her words- no sketches, no pictures, just his interpretations, imagination, and skillful drawing.
Also, thank you Bob for running such a tight spot. The cleanliness there shames my own apartment, and you can be sure that every single one of my friends and any stranger that stops and asks about my rad ink will get to know how much I appreciate and love Insight Studios.
I wasn't sure if I would want another piece after this one, but less than a month after finishing my skyline, and I am already scheming what my next one will be, and that is thanks to the great experience I had here. -

FINALLY decided to get my nose pierced today. The deciding factor? Tats for Cats, a fundraiser at Insight Studios.
My first impression was that it was clean...very clean. The girl behind the desk was super friendly and helpful and Bob stuck a tiny rhinestone into the side of my nose. He was very nice and very informative. These guys definitely know what they're doing. Thanks! -

I probably should have written a review about Insight a few years back, but after my second visit today, I'm impressed all over again.
I went in to see Bob Jones in 2009 when a piercing I had fell out. I was sure it closed and called to schedule an appointment to get it re-pierced. I had never been into the studio before, but had read reviews online and had ventured a gamble after being to several tattoo studios in Chicago (-cough, cough- Chicago Tattoo Factory) and essentially hating my experience there. Insight also is OSHA certified, and every artist has incredible certifications that left me feeling in good hands.
It's a clean, straight-forward shop that is pretty spartan, but feels professional and relaxed at the same time. I followed Bob to the back of the shop into the private piercing area, and he took a look at the vacated spot my piercing had left. [Get ready, because this is how NON bullshit this place is.] He informed me that it hadn't completely closed, and he just opened it up with a couple quick slips of the needle. He then proceeded to charge me only for jewelry. I was shocked, because surely another place would have charged me the full piercing. I obviously left him what I was prepared to pay, anyway, but the gesture was not forgotten. He was nothing but professional through the whole piercing, too, which really helped ease my nerves. I recommended Bob to several friends, all of whom had similar experiences and nothing but positive things to say.
On to the second visit: I had promised myself to give careful consideration to my next tattoo, and finally felt ready to do it this week. I called the studio to ask about availability and if someone could help me conceptually, and was greeted by the amazing girl that works the front. I must have called on four separate occasions to get schedules, updates, and a good time to walk in and have someone give me an estimate. Not once was she curt or annoyed with me, and went above and beyond to help me find a good time to stop by to talk to someone about the work I wanted to have done. I knew I wanted a quote from my favorite novel, and I knew I wanted it on the backside of my right ribs, but I had little other plans.
I ended up meeting with James Eastwood, and he printed out a script/size suggestion and had me proof read it several times. He was relaxed and quiet, and wasn't in-your-face, which was great. I'm not shy, but standing in the middle of a tattoo studio with your shirt hiked up exposing some unda-boob in front of a really handsome artist is a little daunting, so he offered to close the curtains around his station and this definitely helped. He was meticulous with the stencil placement, and took it off several times before it was perfect. He also custom-blended the ink for me, as I wanted a sepia brown color that matched my previous tattoos. The fact that he took so much time in the preparation, before the actual tattooing ever began, was again, comforting.
He began my tattoo and asked me several times through the process how I was holding up. I was expecting a lot more pain in the rib area, but his finesse made the experience surprisingly less-agonizing than anticipated. He was friendly and open, but definitely not chatty, which was perfect. I wanted to close my eyes and do some quiet *me* time while he was working, so it was exactly what I needed. We chatted a little then he let me lay back and just relax.
The script came out beautifully, and I couldn't be more content with the work that is now a part of me. Wouldn't consider another studio after two incredibly positive experiences here. Absolutely recommending Bob, James, and the entire Insight crew to my close friends. -

Since my last review, I have sent 5+ friends to Insight Studios. All of them have commented that they will "never go to another tattoo or piercing studio in Chicago." And trust me - they've got a number of piercings and tats!
Everyone who has come by Insight Studios has been (postively) shocked at how clean, professional, and clean everything looked (did I mention clean?). At my last piercing, my two friends (both only have tats) said they ddin't think a shop could look this good. They both got tattoos at other places around Chicago and mentioned how cluttered other places looked.
Nip piercings now re-done - they are healing faster and cleaner than they did 4 years ago. No swelling, no infection, no irritation. And I know if I have a problem - I can call Bob and he will know exactly what to do. Thanks Bob!1 Previous Review: Show all »

It's been almost two and a half years since I last came. I got a tragus piercing yesterday, because my Yelp coupon expires today. The shop is still as clean as it was two and a half years ago, the process was as quick and slightly painful (I'm a big baby about these things) as last time, and I was a lot less intimidated by Bob this time. He gave me and my friend a Blow Pop each on the way out too =) Thanks for everything Bob!
When I got in, I got all the care instructions and soap I needed, and was told after Bob finished another piercing that it would be another 6-7 minutes while they sanitized the room. I liked that.
I like this place a lot, and would recommend it to anyone.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Aurore L.
I had been wanting one for years.
Not forever - mind you. When I was young and innocent I was much more conservative than in my older age. America does that to you, I guess. You hang out with bad guys, you date and marry an inked dude, you live in the South Side for a while and there you go - all of a sudden you are itching to get permanent art on your body.
It sneaked on me, slowly but surely.
The problem was, I had no idea what to get. I looked for inspiration on every inch square of skin exposed at Kuma's, on the beach, on the train and everywhere in between. I was that freaky girl that stares at you intently, her head tilted to read the words inscribed under the bleeding heart on your arm, studying the rich colors of your jackalope or wondering why Mexican folk art is such a popular tattoo subject.
It didn't help.
I didn't want to choose something random. Even though I wanted some ink I wanted it to be meaningful and somewhat representative of who I was.
And then I turned 35.
And I decided that on top of celebrating that event at Alinea (tomorrow guys!!) it was actually the perfect occasion to pop my cherry, bite the bullet and fear no more, and go to the much celebrated Insight Studios. I figured inspiration would knock on the door because, ya know, it had to.
And it did.
On D day I pushed the door and met with Ryan. I apologized for not having a ready-made design, explained to him what I wanted and waited while he went to the back to create a sketch. He emerged two hours later with a beautiful drawing that I was only too happy to approve. Then I followed him on the "operation table", laid on my side and waited. He traced the drawing, asked a second time for my approval and got to work.
And man, it HURT!! People told me that it felt like a cat scratching your skin for a long time. I don't know....unless they have a lion at home or something. It was definitely more painful that I thought it would be and I had to bite into R's sweater when Ryan carved (?!) the outline, and I am not particularly sensitive to pain. The filling is a breeze in comparison but after close to three hours of work I asked to call it quits until next time.
The result? A overflowing ink pot with a quill and three magnolia flowers. An artistic combination of two favorites of mine - one permanent, the other fleeting and short-lived; one cultural, the other natural; one black and white, the other colorful.
Wrapped up, instructed by my torturer of the day and second appointment made I left happy and proud. The whole experience was a success. The pain persists a few days and really feels like a very bad sunburn. The skin scabs up and stays tender for about 10 days but it's all worth it. It is.Listed in: Aren't you scared yet?!?

I got the yelp deals for Insight studios, and have had a few friends recommend this place. I was definitely impressed with this place and it definitely did carry an aura of professionalism and high hygiene standards.
We didn't feel rushed into anything, all our questions were answered, and we definitely took our time making the decisions. Its good to know that they have a $60 minimum on any tattoo, and I feel like that is definitely a reasonable price.
My friend and I went in, armed with our yelp deal, and were greeted by the receptionist that was very nice. Even though we did not make appointments, we were taken care of quickly. I got two tattoos that day, done by Ryan, and my friend got her tragus pierced by Bob. Everyone was friendly and wanted to make sure it was a good experience. The Blow pops given to us after the whole thing was said and done was a great touch too!
So go forth and get inked here! And don't forget to tip your artist! -

If you're looking for a tattoo place with talented people and a safe, clean environment, you can't do much better than this place.
The place smells like a doctors office- and I mean that in a good way. It's absolutely immaculate in here. Brian, the guy who did my tattoo said you could eat off the floors... but assured me they don't do that.
I just walked in because my design was very simple. Brian went over everything with me- even drew up some alternative designs to make sure I was happy and re-sized the thing in the printer over and over.
He made a stencil and didn't show any signs of being annoyed when he had to keep placing it in different spots since I wasn't happy with the placement.
He was even very nice and patient with me when I felt a little woozy after everything was done and told me to just chill out in the chair as long as I needed and waited with me and chatted while I waited to feel ok again.
Everyone here was super sweet and I will definately be coming here again for my next tattoo. -

It had been almost 20 years since my first tattoo. I had waited long enough.
I chose Insight because of my respect for the charity work they do for animal shelters. I chose Brian as my artist because he had a few really awesome cat tattoo samples on the website. I later found out one of these is on Bob, the owner! Cool.
I conversed with Brian via email a few times prior to the appointment, including sending him the design. By the time I actually made the appointment I had over thought the design to the point of madness. Brain was very understanding and showed me the sketch he had made for me. We agreed on a size and placement and the inking began. I still wasn't even sure about colors but told Brian to do what he thought would look best. I am glad I did! It looks amazing. He really took his time to do this right.
Yes, it hurt, more than I remembered. But, nothing too unbearable. A few "clench your teeth till he's done in that spot" moments, but nothing to prevent me from getting another one. (And much sooner I hope!) The studio itself is clean, uncluttered and modern. Everyone there was really nice. Prices are reasonable. And since they only do custom work, you won't ever see your tattoo on someone else! (Unless you plan it that way!)
I will definitely be back. My tattoo itself turned out better than I ever imagined. Thank you Brian, and Insight. I couldn't be happier with the entire experience! -

I love this place.
When you walk in the door, you notice the shop isn't littered with gaudy photos of tattoos that the house artists have done, it's clean, it's bright, and most importantly the people aren't dicks. I've been tattooed at four different locations now and this is the first place where I haven't either felt like an inconvenience or like a total dweeb just because I don't dress in rockabilly wear and "f**k me" pumps (not that there's anything wrong with that!).
I came to see Jeff Paetzold because he is, in my opinion, the best tattooer in Chicago. The man's portrait tattoos look like photographs... He's obnoxiously talented. (And ladies, he's not terrible to look at while you're stuck in that chair for hours...) Jeff has tattooed me twice now and to say that both pieces were worth the money would be the understatement of the century.
Everyone here is super nice and fun to be around. The talent in this shop coupled with the excellent customer service can't be beat... I refer everyone I know to Insight...once you go, you'll see why! -

Bob Jones is easily the best piercer in the city, and this studio is truly worthy of someone of his status in the body modification community. It's very clean, friendly, open... I'm not in Chicago often, but I would definitely wait to come back and be pierced by Bob again. He talks you through everything he's doing and makes sure you're ready before he starts to pierce. I was initially pretty nervous about getting my nipples pierced, but Bob calmed me down and it barely hurt at all!

I hate needles.
I also hate commitment.
So I have no real idea why I decided to get a tattoo which involves BOTH of those things.
(I don't actually hate commitment.)
(I do hate needles, though.)(A lot.)
Anyway, my first tattoo experience at Insight couldn't have been better. The place is STERILE with a capital everything. James answered all my stupid questions and was incredibly cool about the fact that my pansy ass needed him to stop like, 10 times during the whole "You are actually getting the tattoo now" process.
I had SUCH a good experience that I'm already planning my second tattoo, which will also be done at Insight. -

While most people come to Insight Studios for a tattoo, I decided to come for a tattoo removal. That's right, they now do removals. But it seems like the review for that should be written for Hindsight Tattoo Removal, which is located at the same location as Insight (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). So I'll save that review for another day and review the things that I know about Insight Studios:
Insight Studios was really clean. It was practically spotless and was the most squeaky clean tattoo parlor I've ever seen. The staff was really nice as well.
There was a huge scheduling snafu on the day that I had my appointment, but Bob Jones apologized all over the place and worked with me to make up for their mistake. He even went so far as to offer me cab fare to get back home. I thought that was nice and I'm always appreciative of a business owner (or anyone, really) who will own up to his mistake and try to make things right. Good on 'ya, Bob!Listed in: Out of my Comfort Zone

This place probably doesn't really *need* another 5-star review, based on the 250+ or so that are already on the site. But for anyone who still can't make up their mind after the first 50, here's my personal experience.
I was a pretty minor league customer--I just wanted my ears pierced before my wedding. Actually re-pierced: I stopped wearing earrings about 10 years ago and figured they had closed up again in the process. I called Insight, they told me ear piercing would cost $75 total, walk-in anytime. When I actually got there, Bob (who looks kind of like a piercing/tattoo parlor version of Grant Achatz; I think the major projection of competence helps too) told me that piercings often don't entirely close, and that he'd try to stretch my old ear piercing holes with a solid not-needle slim metal bar first, rather than go for a new piercing.
Short story short--it worked, a few minutes, we were done, and he charged me for the new hoops only ($25). How glad am I not to have hit up Claire's (where I did my first piercings once upon a time)--who I am sure would've had no problem taking a piercing gun to my head and putting in another set instead! Super nice, great about answering my little minor league piercing questions, and plus, I learned about what classes not to take, should I ever attend an Association of Professional Piercers meeting . . . -

Started getting tattoos in 1997, when you walked in without an appointment, picked some random tattoo dude that wasn't busy, picked from their flash and hoped it turned out ok. Quickly learned that if you wanted something amazing on your body for life, you have to do your research (art piece AND artist!). I had been out of the loop of getting tattooed for about 5 years and was shocked to learn that the best of the best had a waiting list of 6 months to 2 years! Damn! But its more than worth the wait IMO. Plus it made me have plenty of time to really figure out what i wanted. I wanted to get the rest of my arm done and would travel for the right artist if I had to...again its worth it to me. I searched the internet forever until I found a review on yelp about David Allen. I knew right away his style was perfect for my idea and my style. Waited a good, eh, month before I heard from him. Than another 3-4 months before I was getting my piece done by him. If I wanted an ok tattoo, I would have gone to somebody who would take me in a week (because they had no clients). That's just how it is these days I guess.
David does amazing work! AND he is the only artist that listens to you. He spent MORE then 5 minutes listening to my ideas :O haha...it was actually about 45 minutes, each time so far. I've worked with so many tattoo artists that get offended when i change something they drew up. Its my tattoo! Its my body!
If your looking for an actual relaxing tattoo experience, go to David Allen. He has the quietest machine. Didn't realize how quiet it was until everyone else started getting tattooed around me with the conventional LOUD ass guns.
My tatts have never healed as quickly and cleanly too. I asked him why that was and it makes sense...its him. He's a gentle tattooer :D
The studio is extremely clean looking as well, I don't think i ever noticed certifications on the walls at other places, or maybe I wasn't looking. But its nice to see them right away. And they play some pretty good music. The most painful part of the tattoo and NIN came on....ahhhhh. -

First tattoo at this place...second overall. Called up studio the day before and made an appointment with James. When we arrived the next day James and another artist was available to take care of my friend and I who were itching for new tattoos. I got the filipino sun that is on the Filipino flag and my buddy got an aquarius sign to represent his son. Both tattoos were Black so no color. James took the time to align the tatto correctly on my forearm, which I appreciate. Pricing was very decent. Laid down a good tip and a week later I'm definitely satisfied with the job. Will have to return with my next idea.

After researching many studios and artists in the city, I decided to contact David Allen for my first tattoo. He does admit to not responding quickly and it took him a few weeks to answer my email. I was almost ready to go to my second choice artist but I figured it would be worth the wait. I was blown away by his work and really wanted him to tattoo me.
David tattoos in the mornings, before the studio opens so it was nice and quiet. He didn't draw the concept until I got there, which was a little nervewracking, but it looked great. He was easygoing, friendly and made my first tattoo experience a good one! The session took a little longer than expected, but he only charged me the amount he originally quoted which was awesome.
As for the studio, it is super clean and sterile. I have gone to a few studios for piercings and none were this clean. I definitely recommend this place! All of the artists have great portfolios, too. -

I bought a Yelp deal for Insight Studios after some stellar word of mouth recommendations.
I was in Chicago for a week of debauchery and was able to get squeezed in and saw James for some pretty basic tattoos. Although they generally do custom work, I never felt like I was less important as a customer due to my sissy little tattoos. Never felt rushed, pressured, or ignored by any of the staff.
This place is clean, organized, and professional. I'm saving my pennies to go back for some larger custom work as soon as I can. -

After doing a lot of research, I went into insight studios last night to get my first tattoo. This place was amazing. Very friendly, clean and willing to take the time to hear my ideas and explain the entire process to me from stat to finish. James Eastwood did just an amazing job and the detail is just perfect!!! My sister in law was with me and ended up getting one as well. When I get my next one, or have any friends that are looking, I would absolutely not hesitate and insist they go to Insight! The review of this place are a true reflection of how well run they are!

Acquired my first tat the day after 9/11/11 at Insight Studios. Brian B. was the artist who spent 45 minutes with me finalizing the design, then two hours creating a masterful work of art. The studio is clean, sanitary, comfortable, and all the other positive descriptors given by previous Yelpsters are spot on. I went early in the day on a not-so-busy day. Since this was my first, I don't have anything to compare it to other than my own expectations, and they were exceeded. The +1 (unexpected delight) of the experience for me was how long Brian spent with me making sure that his sketches were exactly what I wanted. He asked me to think about what it would look like over time, how the colors would look side-by-side, how the curvature of my arm would potentially "deform" the symmetry of the design, and other issues that I had no idea I needed to be considering.
Since going, I can't help but wonder whether small shops like this could use some free consulting around the overall customer experience, their use of social media, and other things that large organizations have to help differentiate themselves in the market. Insight Studios clearly differentiates based on (a) cleanliness of their operations and (b) pure talent of their artists. I still can't help but wondering whether there would be anything else they could do to make this place truly exceptional. -

I wouldn't go anywhere else to get pierced.
I only have one tattoo (done by Brian at Insight), so I don't know how it compares to other places, but I've had piercings done all over the place, and Bob is my favorite. All of the piercings are really well priced, unlike a lot of other places that make a business around gouging barely legal 'burbanites (I'm looking at you, $90 nose piercing at Chicago Tattooing). He's pretty quiet but still manages to be funny and engaging and takes your mind off the thought of a needle plunging through you in the next minute or so. He did my triple cartilage spiral, septum, tongue, and rook over the last few years, and all have healed really well.
You get a good lollipop afterwards, none of the Dum Dums bullshit like your doctor might give you when you were 7. However, I've never been offered or seen horchata, which other people seem to have gotten here. Maybe I haven't looked hard enough? Horchata or not, I'll continue to go here if I want anything else done, and walk to La Pasadita around the corner for a $1 horchata afterwards. -

Came here over the weekend for a walk-in tattoo with a friend and had a fantastic experience.
We knew we wanted tattoos, but had no real idea where to go. So we yelped. Insight seemed the most well liked and, when we checked out their website, saw that they were doing a fundraiser for Tree House Humane Society. Spend money on a tattoo that goes to save kitties? Sold.
My friend and I both went to James (We went one after another for, you know, moral support. Tattoos kinda hurt.) and had a fantastic experience. He's very chill and non-judgmental (I'm a total wuss when it comes to pain), and he took his time to make sure that everything was right before starting. We both brought in the designs we wanted so I can't speak to his artistry, but he certainly had skill.
The rest of the staff is totally helpful and the place seemed so sterile you could probably perform open-heart surgery there.
I'd definitely go back if I'm ever in Chicago hankering for another tattoo. -

Today was my second trip to Insight for a couple more piercings, and this experience was just as amazing as the first. It's almost hard believing a place as awesome as this exists, but alas, it does!
Like I said in my first review, my parents aren't fans of piercings, and I needed their approval because I'm still under their rule, but they were much more at ease knowing what a wonderful experience I had the first time at Insight.
Although we had to wait a little longer this time, it was well worth it. It's a nice environment and everyone who works there is super friendly, not to mention Bob Jones frequently has benefits for animal shelters. Today he informed us that all of the proceeds this weekend are being given to the Red Door Shelter, which is seriously amazing.
If I can think of anything else I want to pierce, this will definitely be the place. Maybe a tattoo when I turn 18....hmm.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I was a tattoo virgin before got inked by James Eastwood at Insight Studios this past weekend. Been wanting one fo-e-va and being not the kind who would get one while intoxicated, I made sure I did TONS of research before I decided the 3W (where, what and when).
There are indeed, lots of tattoo studios in Chitown and surroundings, even the ones with stellar 5 stars reviews like Insight. But I chose Insight for a couple of reasons:
- The studio looks super clean (and it was, super clean!).
- They have 'private booths' with curtains - so only your tattoo artist sees you topless (or bottomless) .
- They constantly do charity events, mainly for animal welfare, which, I also am a huge fan.
I sent an e-mail to Bob, asking him to hook me up with a tattoo artist who is awesome and extra nice (gentle is a plus). And James totally fits the bill. I made an appointment with James directly and e-mailed him the design I had in mind. Came to the studio on the day (10 mins early) - and James was already there. We chatted for a bit about the design. He sketched it. I approved. And off we went to his station and he worked behind the closed curtains. Fast forward twenty minutes later, I'm all set with a new tattoo on my upper back. He also took the time explaining the dos and the don'ts after getting inked.
How was it, you asked? Well ... I don't believe there's such thing as painless tattoos (but I'm certainly not the expert). It does hurt. In my experience it feels more like a burning sensation. (not the good kind, if there is such thing as a good burning sensation at all). The first minute was the worst. The rest was not that bad at all.
I just purchased the Yelp Deal for my 2nd tattoo - so, believe me when I said: it was not that bad at all. -

I emailed Insight the day before and showed Bob my design. He told me to come in and see James. I was nervous since it was my first time plus I didn't see any reviews on James or links of his work on the website. Bob assured me that I was in good hands and that James was new to the shop. He also sent me a link of his work.
I really didn't know what to expect, but when I got there James was very sweet and patient with me. We moved the stencil around a bit until I was completely happy with the placement. I had read several different opinions on how painful it was going to be and was kind of queasy all afternoon before I got there. Surprisingly, it wasn't that bad. James was pretty gentle but also fast. I was done in about 25 minutes. The price was very reasonable and I mentioned Yelp for the $10 discount. I had an excellent experience! -

Insight saved my arm!
I got a tattoo done at Windy City Ink (HORRIBLE DECISION) and it got infected. Most of it fell off and it took several months to heal. Insight fixed me right up and Ryan Flaherty did a beautiful job.
Also, Bob is just so nice. Seriously. Like, it can't be healthy to be that nice.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I should have sent this update earlier, but Norman's comment reminded me to log on here.
I had Brian expand my original tattoo to about 3x the size last year. He took a trace of my original and worked my desired additions around it. He also touched up the original tattoo in some spots I'd messed up during the healing process by not being diligent enough with the healing lotion. The final result is pretty incredible and I'm really happy with it.
My experience the second time I visited was even better than the first time, even though the sitting was longer. I brought a friend with me and she had two small pieces done during the first hour of my sitting. She had a great experience and was happy with her results.
I've since sent a coworker to Brian for an extremely complicated cover up. My friend is in love with the piece Brian came up with as the cover, but I'm just blown away by the before/after. Somehow Brian was able to turn an uggo black and red mistake into a beautiful stained glass spin-off. It's absolutely beautiful and the colors are still bright and vibrant a year later.
As for my piece I'm very happy with the final result. I always recommend Insight to friends looking for tattoos - especially their first tattoos - and I'll probably be back for more :)1 Previous Review: Show all »

Memo is an artistic genius! I am deeply in love with my new ink and it blends with the others brilliantly. Lots of compliments on the shear perfection of his fine line work and the sense of color, 3 months later and it hasn't faded one bit!
As for the price, its an individual piece of art that you always get to enjoy on your body.
