Being on the ocean (literally ON) automatically earns this place 5 stars.  But I have to delete one because it has been allowed to become run down.

I stayed in room 307 and had a King size bed and a jacuzzi tub.  The bed was very comfortable and the linens were clean.  The jacuzzi tub is small.  It is a regular shower/tub but with jets.  The shower is most definately the worst I have encountered when travelling.  The pressure of the drizzling California rain is harder than this shower.

The carpeting and television could use some updating.  But the reception and channel choices are good, but really there is an ocean outside of your window, why are you watching tv anyways?!

The wifi is free and reaches out to the beach behind the hotel.

The service is fabulous, the employees are all very friendly and willing to help in any way.

This is a bit pricey but well worth it.

This place is a FOUR-STAR dump.  The carpet was threadbare, faded and stained; the sliding glass doors and screens are off their trolleys; the pseudo-antique furniture is on its last legs; the bathroom sink top was cracked; there are no in-room coffee makers or microwaves (there was a mini-refrigerator, though); and there probably isn't a door in the whole place that's square with its frame.

So what makes a place like that worth four stars?  Two things.  The first is found in the hotel's name.  It's not Inn AT the Beach, it's Inn ON the Beach . . . literally.  I didn't pace it off, but I'd guess the hotel isn't two hundred feet from the water at low tide.  If you love the beach, this is your place.  Just be sure you get a room on the second or third floor because there's a giant sand dune that blocks the view from the first floor rooms.

I said there were two reasons this place gets four stars.  The second thing is the quality of service.  Everybody I spoke with was friendly and sincerely eager to make my stay enjoyable.

I was on a working vacation, so I spent quite a bit of time in the room on my laptop.  Did I feel deprived?  Not at all.  With the sliding glass door pried open, I could hear the surf all day and all night long.  It's amazing how well you'll sleep with an ocean soundtrack.  Oh, if you plan to be working with something that needs electrical power, bring an octopus and an extension cord--electrical outlets are scarce.

With the fabulous view, great sound effects and friendly staff, all at a reasonable price, I was tempted to give the In on the Beach five stars, but I'm reserving that last star for when they get the sliding glass doors replaced.  Of course, I'll have to go back to see if they've done that--a sacrifice I'm more than willing to make!

Two stars because it is on the beach. Otherwise, it is pretty bad. It was actually the dirtiest hotel I've ever stayed in. There was a thick layer of dust on every surface over four feet high and the bathroom was in desperate need of a good scrubbing. The rooms are hideous and covered in pink rose wallpaper that is also filthy. The whole place is totally run down and the "couch" in the lobby is so ratty, it looks like it should be sitting on some porch in Compton.

The Inn On the Beach is a little secret hide-a-way of mine, and I almost hate letting anyone in on it, but it's just too cool not to. It takes me an hour or less to get up to the Seaward Ave. beach scene from Burbank, and it's just far enough to make me feel like I've escaped to another world. From the outside, the Inn looks a bit run down just like the Seaward Ave. enclave that's one of the last funky California beach towns that time forgot.  No frills, high-end establishments, or movie stars here; just kick back good times at the beach.   But on the inside, the rooms at the Inn are very clean, and  nicely furnished with an antique vibe, comfy beds, jacuzzi bathtubs, a little fridge, cable TV, and a gas fireplace to cozy up the chilly beach evenings you can always count on unless we're having ridiculously hot weather. The Inn is situated right on the sand with private decks just a few steps from the ocean so you can listen to the surf lull you to sleep and wake up to the mellow locals goofing with their beach dogs. Oh, and make sure you book on the third or second floor since a sand dune blocks the view on the first floor. I do LOVE this place, and it's been a staple in my get-a-way repertoire for a few years. And the food all up and down Seaward is varied and yummy: burgers, fish n' chips, tacos, coffee w/baked goods, Italian, Mexican. There's also a major supermarket and a small liquor store within walking distance so you can park your car and never leave the strip if you don't want to drive anywhere during your stay. BITCHEN DUDE!
