There's nothing like starting your weekday morning with a hearty breakfast and the all too familiar food coma that follows. I'm always on the look out for new breakfast nooks and Inn Kensington was a pleasantly surprising find.
Inn Kensington is a quaint, charming restaurant that emits a comfortable, cozy vibe when you walk in. Good lighting, clean, and a decent amount of seating. It seems to be one of those establishments where all the locals spend their mornings eating breakfast, catching up with the other regulars, and enjoying a hot cup of tea.
Food:
- I got the impression that they offer a more extensive and exquisite brunch menu on the weekends, but the weekday menu boasts a lot of egg dishes - omelets and scrabbles galore! I'm not a huge egg person, so it was a good thing they had a second page to their menu with a small selection of non-egg dishes. I was in the mood for an epicurean adventure, so I decided on the corn-cilantro pancake with salsa, avocado (score!), and feta cheese with a side of black beans and biscuits. This dish was a party in my mouth! The corn-cilantro pancake was wonderful - great texture, moist and slightly sweet. The delicate pancake was complemented by the creamy avocado, mild salsa, and savory black beans. The flavors just worked so well with each other. And I haven't even mentioned the biscuits yet! Definitely don't miss out on the biscuits when you come here, they're the highlight of the meal. Light, chewy, addictive, and fabulous. Even better with a little butter and jam. They give you TWO huge biscuits with your meal, so be prepared to be stuffed or take one to go for a mid-day snack.
Service:
- The service was amazing. We were seated immediately and given ample time to peruse the menu. The food arrived piping hot well under 5 minutes after we placed our order. No joke. I think our waiter could read minds because he was always one step ahead of us. As he brought over our check, he noticed that we hadn't finished our biscuits, so he did a quick U-turn and grabbed a to-go bag for our heavenly goodies.
Heads up: They do NOT take credit cards. Cash or personal checks only.
Give this quaint eatery a chance if you're in the mood for service with a smile and an affordable meal that will hit the spot.
We just moved to the neighborhood a couple of months ago but have already made this a brunch tradition -- it's so good! And the prices are reasonable enough, you can go all the time and not break the bank.
I love their smoked salmon omelet with carmelized onions and aged white cheddar. My husband loves their eggs benedict (the best hollandaise he's ever had, he says) and their chorizo scramble.
Their potatoes are soooo delish, too. With a dollop of sour cream on top.
And mimosas are $3.50. You just can't beat that!
But please don't go on weekends for brunch. I don't want to have to wait too long for a table (so far, we've only had to wait a few minutes).
Oh, and it's cash only! The only downside.
I used to come here a lot, but started finding better places.
The french toast is OK, but its thin and a little over cooked. Just OK. The omelettes are also just OK. Where they do well is in the mexican/southwest types of offerings (i.e. huevos rancheros). Its not really my thing, but my friends are always super happy with their meals.
Quick edit - the biscuits are really, really good. Best I've had in a while.
The service isn't overly friendly, but they are super fast and efficient. No attitude, just all business. The place is really cramped, but they do their best to accomodate your party. In all, its a decent place, but I think better options exist.
Looks like a locals type of joint (or people who read about it on yelp and ventured up the hill.)
We were on a list behind 8 other folks, but were seated in about 20 minutes as promised. Although it was already 1:30 by the time we ate.
It wasn't bad ... but it wasn't amazing. Fred got the regular breakfast - 2 eggs with sausage, I got the creole omelet. It was less omelet (i.e. with egg holding the thing together) as it was a mess of cheese, sausage, peppers, onions and chicken. It was good but different.
Service was pretty quick and food came out fast ... I can see how it's frequented by regulars but it's probably not worth the drive for me to visit again.
I probably never would have tried Inn Kensington for dinner if it hadn't been for a friend and fan of the place.
Solid food, casual atmosphere and extremely inexpensive. I was shocked at how inexpensive, yet well prepared and good quality.
It was absolutely dead on a Saturday night, which tells me that the breakfast business is what they're all about. , If you're looking for a place to yourself for a quiet dinner, this is your spot.
Sometimes you go in for a regular brunch with biscuits and find yourself staring at Chagall paintings, real, honest-to-god Chagall paintings (not prints) on the walls of your diner. There are no words for such a baffling place, but they make damn good omelets.
Since my last review I've had lunch here a couple of times, both times the delicious green salad w/ prawns. It was only $8.95 for a good sized salad of baby greens w/ 5 large prawns, feta and pitted Kalamata olives. One of today's specials was fresh squeezed limeade, $2.25 w/ refills. That alone would earn them more stars. It was indeed fresh squeezed, beautifully balanced and vibrant w/ flavor. And my glass was refilled. Twice. I savored mine so thoroughly my friend Deborah, whom I met for lunch, ordered some for herself. I don't know how long they'll be making this, but it's worth a trip on a hot day, or even on a warm one like today.

I had brunch here today. It's not the elegant place it was when it first opened, but it's pretty… Read more »
I'm giving this place 3 stars because it's pretty good and I'd go back, but I don't love it dearly.
I've been here probably about 10 times in the last 5 years or so. I usually go with my brother who is wildly obsessed with it. I think it's just a place off the beaten path and he likes that. He's been coming her for around 15 years or something.
Anyway, I've had their omelettes and just egg dishes, and the last time I was there I tried the Eggs Benedict from the specials board for the first time.
I have had eggs benedict at a few restaurants and I think this version is my least favorite. It didn't taste bad, but the appearance was less than appealing. I tlooked like I had two big sloppy eggs plopped on top of some ham, and then on top of some english muffins. Then on top of all of that a big gob of Hollandaise was added. And it was not evenly poured. It was just kind of dumped on there and didn't cover half of my eggs.
It all tasted fine, I ate every last bit of it, but I don't think I would order that dish again. I'd probably go back to just ordering an omelette or something else.
I also had a mocha. I didn't love their mocha, I felt that it was really thick and gritty. Almost like mud. And they server their mochas in glass cups with no handle. So when you pick up your drink your hands get burned to hell. What logic is that? They should get mugs so that they aren't sued when someone drops a hot mocha in their lap.
And my final comment on my most recent trip is that we sat with our dirty plates for close to 20 minutes before our check came. Just sitting there waiting. Clearly done. That is my biggest pet peeve, not getting our check when we are clearly done. Or at least being asked if we are done or want our check.
The bacon is cooked well here. :D
Gayle and I stopped by this morning for a late breakfast after attended the Cal graduation ceremony at the Greek Theatre. Gayle had the omelet with bacon, spinach and white cheddar cheese, while I opted for eggs (over easy) and the New Mexican sausage. Of course there were the tasty and expeditious Powdermilk biscuits, that gave this shy person the strength to get up and do what needs to be done!
The biscuits also worked well in combination with our butter, good strong coffee, and the plate remainders. And when you threw in the orange slices, the potatoes with sour cream, a shared mimosa, and thou, the result was two full and happy campers.
The service was good and since it was a weekday there was no wait or any trouble finding a place to park. I had forgotten that Inn Kensington is a cash only business, but the ATM is close by, and I had a check handy anyway. Gayle and I were also impressed that the waiter had a stock of "doggy bags" ready in his apron, no doubt for the remainders of the buttermilk biscuits that only a hungry teenager could eat in one sitting.
And that's not all! The lunch and dinner menus definitely looked tempting enough for a return visit.
Good consistent breakfast. Good prices, good fast service. Skip lunch or dinner here, just stick with brunch thats their forte.
This place is really cute. I've only had breakfast/brunch here. The food is great for breakfast. Wish it wasnt so far away so I can go more often.
The quiet atmosphere, interesting people that go there ( it is too close to Berkeley not to have a few people on multiple psych meds), and good food make it a favorite of mine. Their dinners and breakfasts are wonderful....For breakfast they serve biscuits and jelly with your order....how wonderful is that! Also, they don't take credit cards but they take personal checks...I love that about them...when trust is at such a premium in the world they are willing to take a check. This place embodies the slower East Bay hills lifestyle that I love. Their prices are outstanding for what you get, they beat so many other places in Berkeley and El Cerrito and they are friendly. For dinner, they have fresh fish of the day (which seems to be Halibut or Tuna) along with Lamb and other interesting options.
We ate here this Sunday morning at around 11am and only waited about 3 minutes to be seated. I expected the wait to be a bit longer, but maybe the rain kept people in today.
We enjoyed the food - it was very good. I had 2 eggs, home fries (which contained tomato, unfortunately not mentioned on the menu or I wouldn't have ordered them), chicken apple sausage and 2 biscuits -- which were very generously sized. My wife ordered the spinach, mushroom and cheese omelet which was also good.
The service was very efficient, I think our food came only about 5 or 6 minutes after we ordered. However, they never checked back with us to find out if everything was correct and if we needed anything else - like hot sauce or ketchup, which was not on the table.
Price-wise it wasn't super-cheap, but before tip our food was under $20 -- and considering the prices of the houses in Kensington, this seems pretty reasonable. We'll be back.
We weren't seated near the door, but I can see how on a cold day it might be a problem.
Fantabulous food!!!!!! if you go there for breakfast.... order the avocado omelet with biscuits and a warm hot chocolate! Nice people.... nice ambiance.... nice location.... Go There!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, also amazing chefs.... the food arrives @ least 30 secs after you order it!!!!!!!!! AMAZING FOOD!!!!!
Summary based on many breakfasts over years:
--no credit cards (ATM 2 minutes away)
--good breakfast
--friendly service handles full restaurant well
--option to substitute fruit for potatoes
--get there when it opens and avoid the wait
--ok parking
--ok for groups up to about 8 (the place isn't that big)
--don't sit near the door in cold weather. Out of it patrons hold the door open.
This place doesn't get the credit it deserves sometimes. You do have to bring cash but there's a cash machine on the block. There can be a wait but usually not long, and not often on weekdays. From there - the food is usually wonderful. The biscuits and toasts are amazing, homemade and very special. the bacon is thick and the best around, they'll cook it as you like. The omelets vary considerably in kind - and some are pretty far out - but the typical ones - cheese, spinach, mushroom and so on are reliably super great. The service is fantastic all the time. I took off one star because once in a blue moon the pastries aren't fresh and the eggs aren't perfect. Yet - for an essentially gourmet place it's faster and more reliable than many others that are better known.
Mmm Mmmm Good!
Frankly, i'd go JUST for the biscuits. Yes, they are that good. Plus, the fresh preserves it's served with are perfect.
I did not, however, just have biscuits for breakfast. I had a wonderful avacado-bacon omelet, dabbed with sour cream. The breakfast potatoes were absolutely delicious.
My breakfast came with 2 very large biscuits, so I didn't get to finish everything on my plate. I wanted to, but was stuffed.
The last little perk about eating at the Inn Kensington, is that it's kind of away from the hustle/bustle. When Rick & Ann's in Berkeley seems too much like an event, and you don't feel like waiting an hour for brunch, try Inn Kensington.
You know how sometimes you can be so hungry that you forget you have no money but you know it does not matter because you have your debit/credit card on you. If you are in this situation DO NOT GO TO THIS RESTAURANT!!! THEY DO NOT TAKE CREDIT OR DEBIT CARDS!!! I don't really want to go to the ATM down the street to get money to pay my bill. They need to get out of the Middle Ages and get the equipment and pay the fees to accept Credit and Debit Cards. The food is fine the service is acceptable but I will never return...
We came here for lunch today, after seeing all the good reviews. Since most folks had commented on breakfast and the great biscuits(and they serve it until 2 pm), it was not hard to decide to have breakfast for lunch. Toni had an omlette with bacon, spinach and white cheddar cheese. I had the sausage scramble with chicken apple sausage in place of andouile. Both of us ordered the biscuits. The biscuits are great, the orange slices on the plate were good, the egg dishes were mediocre. Toni reported that the bacon was extremely salty; my scramble was boring. Service was good. We'll remember the biscuits fondly as we frequent other places for breakfast.
I enjoyed my food, the joint is run by Asian people, and the price is right. Huzzah!
I ordered the chiles omelet (mild green chiles, jack cheese, salsa, and some veggies), which came with potatoes and some orange slices. I opted for the biscuits over the toast, and I'm glad I did. You get two HUGE golden delicious biscuits with your entree (I took 1.5 of them home). I had a reasonably priced iced tea to drink.
My main complaint about the omelet is that the salsa inside it was too salty. There was also a bit too much cheese, but neither of these are dealbreakers for me.
I've only been here for breakfast, but have enjoyed breakfast here a million times. (That may be a slight exaggeration.) My favorite dish is the corn-cilantro pancake with feta cheese and avocado. Sounds strange, but it's a great way to start the day without getting too weighed down by heavy portions. If you want to go the route of total glutton, try the chorizo scramble. It's spicy and delicious. And of course you must order the biscuits. They're light and fluffy and they give you an excuse to use their homemade raspberry jam.
They don't accept credit cards, so don't forget to bring cash! There's only one ATM in Kensington (which is two doors down from the restaurant) and it's not unusual if it is empty.
Nice biscuits, also fresh jam, but the jam is left out on the table without any cover or sneeze protection. I almost stuck my finger in mine a few times accidentally because it is a small table in a crowded restaurant. Probably if you want to be particular about your germs you want to get there early to avoid all the sloppy seconds.
The chorizo scramble was good, I'd order that again but there were some good specials of the day that I'd check them out as well.
I came here with good company on a Monday morning. Ordered the Avocado Omelet and loved it! The fresh wheat bread and buttermilk biscuits were delicious and the food was served so fast i didn't even have to time to yearn for it! Very attentive staff even on a crowded morning. I'm definitley going back there soon. I didn't think it was that pricey... it's cheaper than iHop!
Only reason i didn't give the whole 5 stars was because my HOT chocolate was not hot at all ok thanks.
What a great hometown restaurant. Excellent Food and Friendly Service! I went here for dinner for a friend's birthday, and they were so sweet! She had a table reserved for 6 and they had flowers, a birthday card and a bottle of white wine waiting. The food was very yummy and filling. Very hometown and family style. I love it! My favorite type of restaurant, because the food is always great and the feeling always welcoming. Next time I'm going for brunch, since I've heard so much about their biscuits from other reviewers. For others, definitely go for dinner too. It's just as FANTASTIC! ;)
Only complaint, not enough parking!!! Definitely go EARLY!
Wow, what a nice place to come for breakfast! We typically go to La Note because it is close to our apartment, but Mari C. and I decided to try something new in the area. I went online and noticed some Yelp love for Inn Kensington, and I now feel it too.

It was a cold and stormy day.....After battling the crowds at TJ's who were preparing for St Glutton's Sunday,C and I went for the cozy, warm atmosphere of the Inn in Kensington. Albeit, it was almost the last minute for brunch, it was crowded. But these are My People!!!!
Well behaved kids, efficient waitstaff. Waffles crisp, eggs poached to C's satisfaction ( who knew she is egg-compulsive!)
I love the genteel clientele! . I like to think the well behaved children there are second generation gourmets, who will pass along the tradition of the good, fresh, healthy, brunch.
I am sending an invitation to Prince Chas to brunch at Inn Kensington
next time he comes to the East Bay
My family is big on brunch, it's like an institution in our house. Inn Kensington has become a staple in our weekly brunching. The food is reliable and good. It's nothing amazing but it' consistency is worth noting.
Although people have complained about the quick turn around I happen to like it. I never feel like they're breathing down my back to get us to leave, they just happen to serve the food quickly.
Their portions are always filling if not stuffing and the prices are very reasonable.
It is always packed when we come on weekends, but I've never had to wait more than 5-10minutes. That said, there isn't alot to see in the neighborhood so it's not the most fun place to walk around.
My only gripe is they don't have oatmeal. Sometimes I just want a bowl and granola won't cut it. But oh those biscuits....
The wait can be long, but it's worth it. Their buttermilk biscuit is so good and they give you 2! I like my breakfast hearty and they give you big portions, definitely quality and quantity.
Their buttermilk biscuits are enough to bring me back again and again, however I think their homefries are a bit too mushy.
Overall a decent place. Seems to be a local favorite however I was not overly impressed.

When you say "Kensington," images of High Street, tea and biscuits, and my all-too-accommodating Filipino British aunt come to mind (the Filipino British accent is awesome). Today in traveling to Kensington (in the triple-C) for the first time, I find the same: a high street, excellent biscuits, and wonderfully accommodating hosts.
There have been few places up here in the Bay that I've deemed to be return-worthy. This isn't to say that the food isn't good; it's just that going to the same place twice --- especially since there are so many different, excellent choices out there --- is atypical. The Inn at Kensington, however, will be one of those places I visit again. And again. And again.
Good food, no wait time (at 9:00 on a Sunday morning), and quiet enough to allow a pleasant conversation over the N.Y. Times. Who can ask for more? Service was more than pleasant, and the food came out right quick.
I had the Chorizo Scramble, which was excellent. I'm always weary (and wary) of scrambles because --- for some reason --- they have a tendency to come out watery and I'm not a fan of watery eggs. The scramble had the perfect consistency. Not too dry, not too watery. Goldilocks would have been proud.
Though my standards have often been described as strict in theory, but fatal in fact, this five-star review should prove that there are places that can truly satisfy my tastes.
Auntie Mina would be proud.
Update 6/06/08
Have eaten here at least six times since mt first visit. I still love it as has everyone I've dined with. Large menu with lots of specials.
Something for everyone.
No tofu scrambles though 8(

My aunt and I thoroughly enjoyed our breakfasts here. We both had the two egg breakfast with home fries and TWO huge yummy buttermilk biscuits. I also ordered a waffle (in a waffle mood). We got a tea and a large o.j. Total was around $23. We were stuffed and each had to take a biscuit home.
We went on a weekday morning, no wait. Service was fast and friendly.
Ambiance perfect--homey and comfy with the morning sun trickling in the large windows.
I wanted to get a to-go menu. The waitperson said they were printing new menus this week.
I'll definitely be back.
Breakfasts under $10 . Lunch and dinner $5-$15.
I absolutely adore Inn Kensington. Insanely efficient, I am convinced they have ESP and are preparing what I plan to order in advance -- there's no other explanation for the light speed at which they serve you! I tend to go for breakfast at least 2-3 a month, and every time I have had extremely friendly, top notch service and the food's been great. Their biscuits are fabulous (and I've had many a biscuit before), and with homemade jam and REAL maple syrup, they've made a lifer out of me. Every single dish I've ordered so far has been superb. Good OJ, too!
I have yet to try lunch or dinner, but I have no doubt they will be excellent as well. While they are small and always busy, it never takes too long to get a seat, and it's always exciting to see what new art they have up by Miro, Picasso, and the like.
Bring cash, no credit cards accepted.
My favorite place around for breakfast. I love biscuits, mmm.
Corned beef hash is great, as ar all the omelettes. Usually I'll just get the fruit bowl and biscuits.
Drew and the rest of the staff are great.
Have only eaten here for dinner once, on Hallmark Day, so it was a special (and delicious) menu.
We had a decent breakfast here.
We both ordered basic breakfasts and the food came out before our coffee was even cool enough to drink. Everything was cooked just right, and I liked the potatoes even though I usually skip them.
The atmosphere was fairly bland and the lattes were pretty bad.
The biscuits, our reason for trekking over, were good. However, they are just as good at Blackberry in Oakland and Blackberry has outdoor seating so we can bring our dog along.
I liked the variety on the menu and that it is a small local place that seems to care about its diners. But, I doubt we will go out of our way to come back unless that corn pancake really calls, or we happen to be in the area without our pup.
This place had nice art on the walls (Picasso), but there were no vegan options, and the waiter didn't know what a vegan was. And he was kind of a dick about it. I don't expect everyone to know about animal rights and everything, but Kensington touches Berkeley, so come on. And there is never an excuse to be a jerk about it, especially if you're a waiter.
They only take cash and personal checks, which is pretty lame for a restaurant at the top of a hill.
They cram everyone in, and the atmosphere is fairly bad.
If you like omelets, they have a bunch of them, but I don't think they're worth the crappy service or the crappy atmosphere.
The crappy service, crappy atmosphere, and utter lack of culinary knowledge made me leave before getting the food. Haven't done that in years.
An excellent breakfast place! I have been there two times and each time they had very interesting and delicious scamble and omlette variations. I really loved the roasted eggplant omlette with goat cheese and peppers, but the best thing I dream about this place is their buttermilk biscuits and homemade raspberry jam they serve on each table. The biscuits are right out of oven, and just melts in your mouth. Overall, it is very different than just frying two eggs at home yourself, servers are very friendly and the atmosphere is very warming. I am definitely interested in trying it for a dinner too.
After so many lunch and dinner trials: Still perfect! What a cozy place and really friendly staff. They have very good lunch items, indian chutney stuffed filo dough, moroccan lemon chicken...and great lamb chops for dinner. I love this place! Always looking forward to eating there...

After, 1.5 years of visiting Inn Kensington I can't get enough of it. It has never been disappointing so far. Especially, Drew makes it more personable and enjoyable for everybody. You feel like you are treated as their best guest. Who would share their home-made honey with you? I love Inn Kensington.
I've eaten at Inn Kensington 20+ times and have always had a wonderful experience. The restaurant can get a little crowded on occasion, but I find that it simply adds to the cozy, friendly atmosphere. The staff is also incredibly thoughtful; last night, for instance, each diner received a complimentary dish of homemade blackberry sorbet that the owner had made with blackberries he had picked in Oregon. It is also quite admirable that the menu features flavors and dishes from around the world (for instance, Thai shrimp curry and Moroccan lamb kabobs were featured along with filet mignon, salmon, and a Southwest-inspired chicken dish, not to mention the best calzone we have ever had). I have always been just as satisfied at breakfast and lunch as I have been at dinner; no matter what time of day, Inn Kensington can be counted on to serve a wonderful meal along with great service.
To Jack M.: had you not been limited by your self-imposed dietary restrictions, I'm sure you would have had a wonderful meal. Inn Kensington is very considerate of vegetarian diners, but I don't believe that vegans make up a significant portion of their clientele (I also think it is important to note that not all of the servers are native English speakers, and Veganism may not have been a familiar concept). I have nothing against your choice of dietary lifestyle, but it is hard to take your review to heart since you didn't even eat in the restaurant.
Kensington... a little pocket of Berkeley/Albany that my husband and I continue to forget that it it exists.
My sister wanted to try something new for breakfast after church on Sunday so she wanted to go here.
Lucky for us, we didn't have to wait... They were super nice and accomodating to my 1 year old... the food was brought out FAST.
the home fries are probably the best I've ever had - and I love me some potatoes! And the biscuits - HOLY SH-- -- it's like crack on a plate.
Hella good. I'd give it another star if I could, just for the fact they give you TWO biscuits instead of just one (one to eat there, one to save for later).
The restaurant is a small operation that's staffed by people who love what they're doing and are proud of what they serve. The quality is high, and prices are quite reasonable. The restaurant is very definitely worth trying, and you're likely to come back periodically.
Inn Kensington is open all day long, and they serve dinner most days of the week. It's not just a brunch place! My impression is that brunch draws customers from around the Bay Area but that dinner clients tend to be from the neighborhood. If you've been here for brunch, consider coming for dinner: it's very good.
After you've arrived and have been seated, you should get up and go to the restroom, which is located behind the dining room, past the kitchen. Your path will lead you right to where food is being prepped and very close to the station where the chef-owner is finishing off other people's meals. Have a look at what's going on, and chat with the staff if you're in the mood. You'll find out what they're recommending and see several meals that are about to be served.
Credit cards are not accepted. You can pay with a local check, but cash payments are preferred.
