Review from David M.
Unionville, CT
I came across the IndiGo Indian Bistro randomly in a shopping plaza and I was unsure of its quality but I figured I would give it a try.
I was very pleased with the quality and taste of all the available meals. I hate mushrooms and they have a spicy mushroom dish that was amazing. I was surprised to see my bill was 15 dollars because it was a brunch but other than that everything was great. -
Review from Shane H.
I'm going to make a prediction: One year from now Indigo Bistro will be out of business. I'm super sad about this, especially because Indigo was the restaurant that really won me over to Indian food. I had tried Indian a bunch of times, but none of it was this good. A bugle starts playing Taps off in the distance... for comedic contrast it's being played by a beagle... with a bagel on his tail. Okay, I'm done being stupid.
It began with the servers. They used to have one solid guy. He was awesome. Very quiet, but attentive and he looked happy to be working there. He was almost always there. And then he mysteriously disappeared. Now there are a few servers doing the singular job he used to do. These guys have that sad "rescue dog" look in their eyes. It's like one of those Sarah McLachlan ASPCA commercials, except with confused Indian guys instead of kittens. They cook like they appear; lamentably.
Then in the middle of dealing with all of that they got do deal with winter storm Alfred. Ever since they got their power back the owner decided to switch to a more economical buffet setup. You can no longer order the ridiculously awesome biryani that came cooked in the little pot with the flatbread cover! No more drumstick crab soup! No crazy dosas! No gobi manchurian or chocolate samosas! The reasoning the owner gave me was that the area was saturated with Indian restaurants and none of them are all day buffets. None of them shut down for two hours in the middle of the afternoon, either, so these guys are breaking all kinds of ground. Don't let them fool you; It has more to do with being cheap.
The food already started to take a turn for the worse with the new help, but now that they resigned themselves strictly to buffet grub, it seems like they've fallen the rest of the way back to mediocrity. Their gulab jamun went from being crystal clear caramel sauce with fluffy jamuns to being over cooked cheese bricks in plain sugar syrup with what looks like a handful of sand floating around in it. It's just ugly now. It used to be magical. When asked about what happened the owner chalked it up to using "more saffron". Sure. It's lighter in color but somehow has more saffron in it... saffron... the stuff they used to dye clothes with? No my friend, that is cheapness floating around in that crumby detritus you call dessert. I could go on about the food...
That isn't to say they did away with their entire menu. Tell me how raw this is... You can order all the boring stuff off of their old menu, but only to go or to be delivered, not to actually eat in the restaurant!!! That means if you were looking to have an oven fresh Lacha Paratha you have to either wait for it to get steamed in the bag during the twenty minute car ride to your house or you get to eat it in the elbow freedom of your car within nosesight of the Manchester dump. It doesn't matter though. Even if you convinced them to cook something not on the menu anymore for you in-house, it still won't be as good as it used to be now that they have the sad puppy dogs cooking it.Listed in: Indian/Pakistani

I have been here few times with my family and friends. We live very close to this place. I also catered food from them for my husband's 30th birthday party. All of our guests really enjoyed the food.
Service is great there and they were accommodating in terms of our needs for the party.
I have also been there for the weekend brunch and the selection of food is very good.
I have been to a lot of indian restaurants all over in CT and I truly believe this is one of really good restaurants. -

you know, I am a big fan of chicken tikka masala, and they don't have it here on the lunch buffet. I like the location, easy acces for me, and the staff is very friendly.

I've been back several times, and this place has become a staple Indian food spot for me. Beer and wine are served, there is a full dinner menu with all the usual suspects, and the service is as attentive as ever (I've never seen my water glass empty). Absolutely one of the best in CT

Review from Karin D.
This was definitely the best Indian food I have ever had! Thank you yelpers for steering me in IndiGo's direction!
IndiGo is located in a strip mall, but once you walk inside, it takes you away from all of that. The decor is gorgeous. The tables each have a black table cloth, covered by a white tablecloth, adorned with a beautiful shade of purple cloth napkin. The lights hanging above the tables are a gorgeous indigo blue. There are many pieces of art on the wall in complimentary colors that really help to create a serene vibe.
My only complaint about the atmosphere at all is that when looking at their huge, front windows, you see a parking lot full of cars, really taking away from the serenity of it all. I would either tint the glass or put potted trees out front or curtains or something, because every time I looked out the window, I was back to being in a strip mall, but when I looked elsewhere in the restaurant, it was more like being at the spa.
The buffet was filled with many options. My husband ordered the buffet, and I have never heard him enjoy Indian food so much. He went on and on about it.
Because I am not only gluten-free, but also dairy-free, the server suggested I order off of the menu. He said that the buffet was all gluten-free but that many items had yogurt in them. Then he brought me a menu and walked me through my gluten-free and dairy-free options. I ended up ordering the Lamb Malli Peralan.
While waiting for the food to come, another server brought us some flat bread and another item that looked like a crepe. I asked him if it was gluten-free, but I don't think he spoke English, as he quickly walked away. However, our server came by and informed me that the crepe looking thing was, in fact, gluten-free. yay!! :) I tasted it, and OH MY GOODNESS!!! It was FABULOUS!! I can't remember everything he told us about it (or even what it was called), but I remember that it was made from rice flour and I think chickpea flour, and the filling had potatoes and lentils. What I do remember is that the seasonings were all completely perfect, and that thing tasted out of this world amazing! I have got to remember what it's called, because I could seriously go back there and just order a few of those and be content. YUM!
My lamb came to me family style in very cool, yet unpretentious, dishes. The basmati rice was tastefully decorated very minimally by a few peas and carrot strings. It was so pretty, I didn't want to disturb it to eat it. But, eat it I did.
I believe that it was a mistake for me to order the lamb. My body is typically used to much leaner meats, as I usually only eat chicken breast or fish. Add to that, my dish had coconut paste in it, and I think it was just too heavy for me. However, if you are used to eating beef, dairy, etc, you probably would not have a problem at all with the richness of this dish. The flavor profile was very good. The cooks at this restaurant definitely know what they are doing and have great skill and talent to back it up.
When I go back, I will be sure to order a chicken dish. I tried a bite here and there of different things my husband got off of the buffet, and everything was just incredible. I have never loved an Indian restaurant this much before, and I have been to MANY.
The service was perfect. They were always there when we needed them, but they never hovered. They always smiled. (I love when service is cheerful. It makes the experience just that much more enjoyable.)
We left very pleased and very full. We will definitely be going back. In fact, I am thinking that I might just have to do their lunch box once per week. mmmmmmmmmmm -
Review from Sara B.
I went here with some friends to try their Wednesday night buffet. All of us were somewhat of Indian food novices so we wanted to try a few different dishes so figured a buffet night would be our best bet. The food was decent and the place got pretty crowded. I don't think I can fairly review on taste seeing as I've only had Indian food 3 or 4 times ever but for the value, it was worth the $13. We enjoyed our meals well enough and the dishes were all freshly prepared (but...stay away from the donuts unless you want to take a visit to the dentist the next day!). I think the next time we have Indian, though, we will opt for a plate meal versus a buffet.
Also, they must have their liquor license now because they do serve various wines and beers and the drink menu is the first thing they give you when you are seated. I noticed a few reviewers were not sure. -
Review from Chris W.
I'll start this by saying I'm far from an expert when it comes to Indian cuisine. It's one of the few ethnic foods I haven't learned much about. I know I like the flavors but don't know how to order.
That being said - I jumped at the opportunity to partake in an Indian buffet.
The food here was good. Nothing special, in my untrained, humble opinion, but good. They seemed to have a decent selection.
I think it was only $12.95... Attractive price. To make things even better, the couple we went with picked up the bill :)
I would probably go back but I'm not in a rush. -

What can I say about Indigo other than I LOVE IT! Every dish I've had here was absolutely delicious and the portions are enormous. I split an entree with my friend and there was enough for her to take home!
What I really love about Indigo is that I don't have to put up with those annoying nuts/raisins wasting space in my food. It's my biggest pet peeve when it comes to Indian food and it's a total non-issue at Indigo. :) Plus the food has a really modern feel, and it's so fresh and full of flavor.
This has become me and my boyfriend's favorite Indian restaurant in the state. The waitstaff is extremely attentive and ready to answer questions even if you don't ask the easiest questions.
My tips: Order your food extra spicy if you desire it. Be careful ordering the specialty naans, however, if you're not accustomed to an extreme dousing of toppings on your naan (the garlic naan is a killer, as it pretty much just has a handful of chopped raw garlic on it).
Overall you really need to get down to Indigo if you love clean, fresh-tasting, well-thought-out Indian food. -

Finally made it here...after a couple attempts. Went on a Monday - closed. Stupid mistake on my part... Went later in the week at 3:30 or so, closed. :( Website (and this site as well) say 11:00 to 9:30, but they apparently close after the lunch buffet, which runs from 11:30 to 2:30, and re-open at 6:00 for dinner.
Food:
The food was pretty good overall. The lunch buffet was good, but I didn't like a couple of the main items, and there really weren't that many choices. I'll probably just opt for a meal next time. The Naan was good, as was one of the chicken dishes and the goat. I like India Raj better so far, but that's way down in Monroe, CT...but I've only been to IndiGo once.
Service:
The service was OK. Speed and attentiveness were good, but the lack of interaction made me feel somewhat uncomfortable for whatever reason.
OVERALL:
I'll definitely be back - this place has some real potential. -

Went for dinner again on Tuesday. Food was still really good, but there was only the buffet available. Very good price, but sometimes i would prefer to be waited on.

I've only been to a handful of Indian Restaurants in Connecticut, and IndiGo is one of the best.
I had the standard Chicken Tikka Masala to go. It wasn't steaming hot when I got it home so I would love to eat in the next time I go. The curry was smooth, creamy, and very mild. In fact, it was almost a little too sweet, so next time I'll ask for just a little more spice.
The chicken was cooked to perfection and it came with a very generous amount of rice. I should have ordered regular naan, but I decided to mix it up and get Garlic Naan. If you are a garlic lover - this one's for you.
The staff was super nice and friendly and very accommodating for my brother who went with me. He is gluten free and currently can't have dairy - and they had plenty of options for him.
Overall, I love this place. -

My favorite here is the lunch buffet (or the dinner buffets, or the brunch buffets..). You get the ability to try a lot of delicious dishes that you might otherwise not want to risk an entire entree on. The food is AMAZING - you can taste the qualities of each ingredient - all creating a masterpiece dish you can't find anywhere else. Super friendly staff too!

Review from ronald s.
Buffet was pretty good, but it is setup kinda weird - like whoever designed the actual tables thought people would have tremendously long arms or something, it is difficult to reach the food at the back of the table. Aside from that, food was great - we were there toward the end of the buffet time and they werent refilling it so quick, so some of it was a little less than warm and a little soggy. Spice levels were very good, and the variety was good. Dosa and Naan were also good and the fact the vegetarian foods are in their own section and are well labelled is a plus!!
IndiGo is in a big strip mall with a busy parking lot, not too far from Patel foods where we were headed for groceries .. Im sure this will be a regular stop! Next time maybe I will order from the menu and see how that goes..Listed in: Favorite Indian Restaurants

I went here for the first time yesterday for the wednesday night buffet with one of my girlfriends who was a novice when it came to indian cuisine. The assortment of different sauces and veggie dishes was quite good. I personally am not a particulary big veggie lover so I would have liked more meat options. To my surprise though I decided to try some of the curry sauces with veggies and it was delicious! Who knew you could actually make peas and lentils taste so good? My girlfriend loved it as well and we both loooved that its BYOB.

Just fantastic. Fresh, original and always amazing. Sheen (owner) works hard to make every visit special.
The lunch buffet is an amazing value with such a great selection. The secret is out and lunch time is getting VERY busy.
Special meals are usually planned around holidays and big events and are usually a great value.
For the best Indian food in the greater Hartford area . . . Indigo is the place. -

I heard that IndiGo is run by the same people as Utsav in Vernon. If that is the case it explains why IndiGo is so great. I love Utsav but it is out of the way for me to get my Indian fix. The tandoori chicken and vindaloo were both fantastic, as are there samosas. Service is top notch, attentive but not hovering. I will be coming back again and again.

Indigo Indian Bistro is a very good Indian restaurant close to Patel Foods where I shop for my Indian groceries. We went there for their weekday lunch buffet for the first time and found an excellent array of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes all well labelled. We paid only $8.99 per person for the weekday lunch buffet and we ate a wide variety of vegetarian curries, curd rice, appam, chutneys, desserts, papad, etc. The food was very good and the vegetable biryani (rice) was excellent. The two desserts Vermicelli Kheer and Gulab Jamun were excellent. The staff is friendly and greeted us with a big welcoming smile. The restaurant itself is very elegant, cozy, comfortable with a nice granite counter buffet area that is well organized. Next time I look forward to trying out their weekend buffet. Wonderful restaurant well worth a visit. The owner of this restaurant was formerly at Utsav Restaurant in Vernon where I have eaten many wonderful buffets. Eating at Indigo was a very pleasant and relaxing experience.
