We got this fantastic Travelzoo deal for a $99 stay with 2 complimentary glasses of wine, $20 credit and free breakfast buffet the next morning. It was a great deal! We thought we would have a mini-staycation.
Plus, what we didn't know was that the dinner was 50% off entrees as well since we stayed at the hotel (Shiraz on the Water). We got this delicious full course meal for $50 (my meal: french onion soup, mixed grill that included a lamb chop, petit filet of beef, venison sausage with fried polenta cakes YUM, and a martini glass full of tirimisu. my husband: crab cakes, rib-eye with musroom pilaf, carmel mini-cake). All of the food was delicious and perfectly cooked. The desserts were fantstic. I wish we had more room for the bread because it came with different kinds of butter, tapendade and hummus.
There was a lot to do. Yes, the mini-golf was old, but it was nice to have it to ourselves. The work-out room is also nice. The rooms were spacious and very comfortable.
A few small complaints. The decor is a little old and the spa is pretty expensive, but it was relaxing. However, if you really want to spa there is a nearby mall with options. I wish that I played golf because it looked very nice.
We had a great stay and it was a great deal. Everyone at the hotel was also super nice.
I've only been in the reception hall for two weddings in the past year and all I can say is that they were nothing spectacular. I wasn't blown away by the food or service. The set up of the interior is pretty, but a bit of a pain because there aren't any restrooms on the top level. The food is wedding food, the champagne for the toast is already poured when you get in and it's warm, the wine tastes cheap and the salad dressing is congealed. Maybe this is why I'm not a big fan of weddings...that and the cha-cha slide.
My recent experience at Spa Vargas of Hilton Indian Lakes Resort in Bloomingdale, IL was disappointing.
First, they delayed my appointment without informing me. After I went out to the reception area and asked, I was informed by the aesthetician that she'll be with me in a minute. Another 5 minutes passed, no one bothered to attend me. I asked the receptionist again, how much longer do I have to wait. I had dinner plan and I asked her to give me an honest estimate so I can make my decision to wait or leave. she asked me what I wanted her to do. I asked her what did she think she should do. Finally she went in and asked the aesthetician for an approximate wait time for me, but came back informing me with the same message I was given 5 minutes ago, "she'll be with me in a minute".
WOW! I went in for a spa service at a supposly 4 star hotel. I did not expect this type of poor quality service nor was I prepared to train their receptionist how to take care of their customers. The receptionist, Lindsay was not helpful, not professional and demonstrated poor customer service. I did not stay for my service. My time was wasted. I will never visit this spa again until they improve their service.
I was here this past weekend with my boyfriend for one of his coworker's wedding. This could have been an unpleasant situation (the only people I knew were my beau and the groom), but it ended up being great. My boyfriend was complaining a bit about the cost of the room and if it was really necessary for us to stay there overnight, but as soon as we checked in that all stopped. It was a beautiful resort - large, pretty, and had lots of restaurants. The hotel itself is really cool, with an atrium complete with a large rock formation and soothing babbling brook/waterfall sounds.
Our room reminded me a bit of a log cabin - oddly shaped, we could hear the atrium waterfall outside (cool view of the atrium and lobby from our room), and wood paneling throughout. There was even a minibar with reasonably priced goods. The cocktail hour was held in the atrium and was very nice, and dinner was good and served promptly in the fancy Shiraz restaurant. My only complaint was that when we went to play mini-golf between the ceremony and reception, we discovered the course was very small and basic-looking. Other than that, everything was great and we had a LOT of fun!
My review might be a little biased, because I had the stay paid for by my wife for my birthday. It rocked! Started with some spa treatments at their in hotel spa.
This is the first time I've ever been to a spa or had a massage. It was a pretty crazy experience. Started with a swedish massage, and that was pretty tame. Feels so cool to have your fingers and hands massaged. But then I had a salt sea scrub while my wife had a pedicure. OMG, that was nuts. I had to get completely naked and lay under a towel that was smaller than the towels I use to dry dishes. And then she rubbed this hot oil on me, and that's dripping into all sorts of places it shouldn't be goin.
Then she rubbed the salts on me. This is where it got real uncomfortable. She's working these salts in pretty vigorously. It's trying to scrub away my dead skin after all. But this is really getting way too far up the towel. I think there may have been a very quick, accidental, illegal contact :/ Then the last part of this treatment is a shower. I thought I was going to shower myself. Nope she just kept me on this table, and put all these shower heads over me and showered me right on the table. And this towel is still on me, but now soaking wet and just stuck to skin.
Wild experience. At the end, I felt slightly violated, but miraculously smooth! It felt great. I may do this again somewhere else if I can wear a swimsuit. :)
But still the spa was great. And I enjoyed the hotel thoroughly.
We ate dinner at the steak house in the hotel. I was skeptical of course of hotel fare, but I was impressed with the entire meal. I even got the prime rib.
The hotel also had a large game room, with multiple pool tables and air hockey! Woot!
The hotel and it's decor is a bit outdated in some spots. Lots of brown curtains. But everything was still in good condition. And they had this really cool bar in the center of the hotel called The Cave. It's like a real cave in the hotel. Not made of some fake plastic rocks, but like these boulders. Just looked so out of place, but so neat!
I really didn't want to go home, and would love the chance to stay here again.

I attended a wedding at the resort on New Years Eve, and I'm unsure how much of my experience was dictated by the resort and how much was dictated by the bride. But, I do know that at the very least, the resort had control over the quality and preparation of the food.
We arrived for a 6:30 cocktail reception promptly at 6:30. The appetizers served during the cocktail reception were not very impressive. I tried the crab stuffed mushrooms - the mushroom was rubbery, and tasted very fishy (not in a good way). There were some other appetizers that were unrecognizable, and did not look at all "appetizing".
Dinner was scheduled for 8pm. By the time the servers arrived with the first course (tortellini, supposedly an appetizer?), it was already 8:30 pm. The server brought four plates to our table, then said he would be back with the rest in just a moment. 10 minutes later, he arrived back with four more plates for the other diners at our table. Service continued like this for the rest of the night.
Overall, the food served at dinner was okay (not stellar). The wine was served half way through dinner, and was not left on the table. The server said she would be back with the wine again later, but never came back. The wedding cupcakes, served with melting vanilla ice cream, were quite dry. The coffee tasted like tea. The spinach salad was good, though!
Overall, not a very impressive New Years Eve. I would not recommend this location for a wedding - and definitely not on New Years Eve.

I went to this resort for Memorial Day Weekend and I have to say that I'm a little disappointed. While the decor is pleasant, the hours for the activities were limited and the bar was closed on Sunday. The food at the restaurant was bad and the service was poor. It took an hour to receive my food (an omelet). The hotel room was different (and nice), but the bathroom door had to be slammed in order for it to be closed and the television had glitches. Overall the atmosphere was nice, but it is nothing like what is advertised on the website. There is no basketball court, the game rooms are small, and the miniature golf course is ancient. Maybe if they lowered the prices on the rooms and fixed a couple of problems I would go back.

Iqra nailed it in her review. Not the easiest place to get to, but a moderately-priced place to stay and lots of activities - spa, golf, pool, etc. I went to my friend's baby shower here last fall and they put on a nice party. The food was pretty good for that mass-produced stuff and good service. Am I the only chick who didn't have baby showers at a country club with 60 guests?

I cannot even begin to explain how disappointed I am with this hotel. I was here on what was supposed to be a two night getaway stay on my company's dime. My boyfriend and I opted to leave early and stay only one night. Not even a free room and 300 dollars paid in expenses each could get us to stay. First off, the room was ok. Fairly clean, nice king bed, but the architecture which was supposed to be prairie style was something unfortunately something more accurately described as Frank Lloyd Wright style via the 80s. Eck. Many of the rooms also face the inside atrium (again, architectural genius) which of courses lends to echo and gets very noisy as there is a bar right in the center. So, expect loud, obnoxious drunk people making noise after the bar closes (which is supposed to be 11pm but ended up closer to 1am). The spa was actually the worst part. They didn't have my boyfriend's appointments in their books. Mind you, I had called our reservations in several weeks beforehand. The assistant manager at the spa did nothing to accommodate us and even blamed me for their ineptitude. They also have adolescents running the reception area who are lacking customer service skills and unable to make any decisions without first calling their manager. To make matters worse, they ended up charging my card for the charges that were supposed to be billed to my company and have still yet to credit my card back after calling several times and being passed off to several people. Exhausting.
I have never received customer service so inept or lacking in all my years. Terrible. Do not waste your money!!
Awesome resort. The rooms are alll very nice. They have great facilities here-- swimming pools, golf courses, spas, and much, much more! Although, I like everything here, I do not like the location very much. It is in a small town, not much around the resort, just a small shopping mall and few restaurants. But then again, the resort is just so great, there is no need to go out!
