Better than most of the Indian food in the Baltimore area, though just once I'd like to walk into an Indian restaurant and hear Goa electronica rather than the vague tabla thumping and sitar twanging that's de rigeur.  Indian Delight (or Delite, or however they're spelling it this time) has much improved since it caught fire a few years ago.  Long gone are the dingy ceiling tiles and weird dark-red plywood partitions between tables.

The food's not bad at all - saag paneer is fresher tasting than the muddy homogenized glop served up at Akbar and its offshoots.  Vegetable dishes are particularly good in my opinion - the vegetables still bright and flavorful rather than overcooked and mushy.  Sauces are nicely bright, and pleasantly spicy.  The iced tea is tasty - basically iced masala chai with lemon, which is very pleasant and refreshing.

Sure, it's a little funky looking from the outside, and the dining room's a dim space.  Still, it's decent enough for a neighborhood joint, and not as unfriendly feeling as some of the vinyl-boothed wonders that populate the strip malls in the area.  Service is accurate, and not actively hostile, which again is a step up from most of the Indian restaurants around.

If you want to satisfy your Indian food craving, there are worse places, and Indian Delight is better than you expect from appearences.  Carry out is a good option, too.  As a Catonsville institution, there's a reason this place persists through good times and bad.

Today I engaged my Chakra. After a quick stop in Ellicott City to pick up a new flat screen telly, Mrs H and I decided to drive through Catonsville for lunch at Indian Delight.

We entered this tiny nondescript brick storefront to the soothing sounds of sitar, bansuri, and tamak' mingled with the olfactory awakening smells of coriander and other powerful seasonings. Cute Gupta Dynasty-like fresco's on the walls added a quaint touch of atmosphere. These alone led me to believe we were in for a good meal. Oh, yeah the place was pretty void of folks. Only two other tables had patrons when we entered. They were pouncing on the buffet, but I wanted something off the menu.

I ordered the mango lassi for my drink; a beautifully smooth fresh with bright fruitiness yogurt drink served in a tall glass . My entrée would just have to be the spicy lamb vindaloo. And a basket of naan. Mrs H ordered the chicken karai medium. Our host - who I suspect as being the manager if not the owner - tried to push Mrs H toward the spicier version, but she's still new to the world of Indian cuisine and didn't want to take any chances. Medium it was.

My lamb was tender and delicious with firm cut potatoes swimming in a tangy red sauce. Yes, it was spicy, but not so spicy as to cause me any harm. My mouth tingled more than enough to make me happy without any masochistic overtones. And although Mrs H loved her chicken, she admits that she should have gotten it spicier. When they say medium apparently that means no life. Get the spicy. The naan wasn't as warm as I like, but it satisfied.

I had planned on the kheer for dessert, but after the entrée I could fit no more food anywhere. Mighty fine eatin' here. Total bill came to under $34. I guess that ain't bad. Mrs H says that was a very good deal.

Catonsville is a bit of a haul from the ponderosa, but when my inner Indian gives another holler and I'm down yonder I'll be more than happy to Raj it out at this place again.

chicken korma chicken korma!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe I'm biased. I ate here and went into labor 30 minutes later after being 2 weeks late- this place is a god send.

I only eat the Chicken Korma.  It is so good I just can't pass it up.  Tandoori chicken has been hit or miss a few times, sometimes dry.

The restaurant is usually completely dead.  But streams of people come in for carry out.  It's dark and the walls are painted nicely...chicken korma.  chicken korma chicken korma!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mango Lassi is also TOP NOTCH!  Try the mixed appetizer sample too.  Super yummy!

Thank you, little sister, for choosing UMBC and inadvertently introducing me to what has become my hands-down favorite Indian restaurant in the greater Washington DC / Baltimore metropolitan urrea! Two years ago, on move-in date, I was hungry and searched Catonsville for places to eat. I thought for sure that I'd be limited to sandwich places or bar foods, so I was a little shocked to learn that an Indian restaurant was nearby, literally just a 10 minute drive from the UMBC campus in what I will affectionately call "Downtown Catonsville." And as an Indian restaurant, whose owners are actually Bengali btw, it is a damn fine Indian restaurant. Simply by virtue of its food offerings, it deserves a hearty four stars. You get your basic chicken tandoori, which is delicious; samosas perfectly done, etc. The lunch buffet menu, as one other Yelper has stated, is a little basic, but you still have access to the full menu, if you please. The service levels, though inconsistent, can sometimes be brilliant. Brilliant, as in when the servers notice how quickly you're going through their coconut nan, they are so pleased that they'll sometimes give you more--on the house! And that brings me to the reason... the simple, sole reason why this restaurant gets the full five stars from me. The coconut nan. It is something that, ever since I discovered it here, I've searched high and low for in the DC area, unsuccessfully. I can only find it here! When I asked the staff if it's a popular item on their menu, they looked at me confused--"No, nobody likes coconut nan. I think some people have said they are allergic to it." Who the 'h' 'e' double hockey sticks is allergic to this sensual, heavenly gift that the gods themselves use to tickle their taste buds with the feelings of petting kittens, showering beneath a waterfall or waking up from a satisfying nap?? You are a monster, sir or madame! A cold-blooded epicurean monster! Okay, sorry, too much... the point is, try the nan. By golly gee willickers, it's the reason why I am like a moth to a flame with this restaurant. Five stars. The coconut nan for the win!

bring your appetite and a bottle of wine.

even their minimal buffet is a real treat in the middle of the day, a perfect place for a quick lunch with colleagues or a low lit dinner with someone special. it's byob, so come prepared if you're looking for a drink. i've been going here for years, went to elementary school with the owners' daughter and always feel at home when i walk in. service is friendly and attentive. the prices are reasonable, and the selection is just right. try a thali (big combo platter) if you're dining alone, or split a few dishes family style with friends to really get the most out the meal. chicken tikka masala is my standby recommendation to people new to indian, but their paneer saag, chana masala, and vegetable korma are a magical trio. get a bread basket and some samosas too! it'll take a few visits to sample everything worth trying, but i'm willing to wager that your first visit won't be your last.

I used to get take out from here at least once a week when I lived in Baltimore (I was right on the Catonsville border). The food was admittedly inconsistent, but when it was good, it was GOOD. Yes, I know chicken tikka masala is wimpy, but theirs (on said good day) was better than anything I've had since I moved to CA. Perfectly spiced, perfectly creamy, perfectly delicious. And the veggie pakora is fantastic (ask for extra tamarind chutney).

It is a bit overpriced. I guess they don't have much competition on Frederick Road. My bengali roommate also complained that they used too much cardamom. I agree that was the case sometimes, particularly in the rice. Regardless, I miss this place so much.

My workmates and I used to drive all the way to Columbia for lesser food...and why? Catonsville has its very own yummy lunch buffet for considerably less hassle. Indian Delite is now a staple of our Friday lunch spots, as well as -- and this deserves a special note -- the number one place chosen lately for celebrating birthdays, going aways, etc.

The buffet has a nice selection of rotating entrees, and the waitstaff are very attentive considering it's a self-serve. There's always plenty of room for large parties. A number of friends who say they don't like Indian food have been won over by Indian Delite. My only complaint is about the rice pudding -- a little soupy -- but it's a small one. I nearly always leave this place happy.

This is a decent Indian restaurant close to UMBC. The lunch buffet is bit limited, but the regular menu is pretty good. I like their standard Chicken Tikka Masala and I love their mango lassi. Overall, I recommend it only for dinner.

The food is average quality indian food. If you dont want to drive to Columbia or downtown baltimore, this is pretty good. The lunch buffet on a weekday/weekend is pretty good value for money. Being an indian, it wasnt the best food, but other guests with me seemed to like it a lot. Try the deserts if you go for the buffet.
