I love this place. Not so much because of the food - although the food is perfectly satisfactory - but because of the atmosphere and service. The hanging lanterns and red walls create a homey environment, and the staff are always perfectly charming. If you tell them you like your food really spicy (as opposed to regular white-person "spicy"), they'll kick it up a notch.
Another thing I like about this place is it's not completely empty in a way that makes you wonder what's wrong with it, but at the same time you can always get seated right away, regardless of what time you come.
I usually get chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, some sort of naan, and I've also had their soups. All are good. The Indian tea is also great for an end-of-meal treat.
been to this place once ... and would never go again ..
the service was very haphazard ... the waiter had no idea what he was serving.... the description of dishes in the menu did not match the actual dish...
The dishes were priced ok .. for indian food..
I would suggest to try out other indian restaurant in the city ..
One of my favorite Indian restaurants in the city!
Having moved away from Morningside Heights four years ago, I haven't been to Indian Cafe in ages.
It was my go-to Indian place for my Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Korma.
Bland. Bad. Never again.
Clean and nice. Lovely decorations. A little loud in the front. Naan was some of the best I've ever had ever ever. Fantastic!
This place is just okay now. Seems to me they used to be more consistently okay, and although I keep trying to be happy here, more often than not, I'm disappointed. Where did their original chef go, I wonder.... This seems to be a popular neighborhood bar, interestingly enough.
As someone who has previously worked in the restaurant industry for 7 years, I have expectations and a level of empathy for servers. Never before have I ever been treated with such low respect in a restaurant. Upon arrival at 11 our party of 3 sat and did not get greeted until 11:15, which consisted of 'what would you like,' not even a hello, and then the statement that 'we close at 12.' Receiving our food at 11:30, we ate at a normal pace. At 11:45 our server questioned if we were finished (there was still food on all our plates) and PUT ON HER JACKET handing us the bill saying we had to pay while there were still two other parties in the restaurant, one of which was a large party of 8. Although the food was good, I will never go back due to the bad taste that the lack of customer service left me.
Amazing food for the cost. I ordered the special naan stuffed with chili peppers and mango and a chickpea dish. The naan was $5, a little spicy, heavy and filling. The chickpea dish was $12 - so my husband and I had dinner for under $25!
I asked the server if a particular dish had butter or other cream and she didn't know, but called the chef to help me. I thought they handled my requests professionally with no attitude and I was able to order a wonderful meal without asking for any substitutions. I appreciate a well-designed menu with a strict vegetarian offering! The service was solid and the restaurant is decorated nicely and the furniture is comfortable.
I am indian and I came here with hopes for some average to above average quality of food. I ordered one main course dish which took 45 mins to come. The Malai Kofta dish was bland. It tasted like tomato sauce mixed with paneer with no spices. I've had this dish at several places and this is the worst. The quantity of rice given was half of that given elsewhere. The ambience was not impressive. Further, the waiter was clueless about Indian dishes. I suggest if you want good quality Indian food in this area to search elsewhere.
The special naan, aloo paratha, stuffed with spiced potatoes and peas, for around 5 bucks was the best thing we had.
I ordered the cauliflower, tomato, potato, peas curry and my boyfriend got one of the lamb curries. They were wonderful at first and we were inhaling them, but then around the halfway point, when we were getting full, it starting getting tiring. As usual, the lamb at Indian restaurants in general doesn't taste as fresh as I'd like.
Service was fine, the waiter overheard I said it was warm and he checked that the AC vent was working. He didn't give me any attitude when I asked for my dish to be minimally spicy. He came over one too many times to make sure things were ok though. I prefer to be left alone unless they were refilling water, which the runners did many times without me asking.
Very good food. I've liked everything I've tried here. And the price is very reasonable.
Some people have said that the special naan (i.e. garlic naan) is very strong. Well, that's how it's supposed to be: strong and delicious.
Some things I've had that I've really like: Chicken Makni, Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Vindaloo (seeing a pattern here?), Lamb Curry, Lamb Vindaloo, and some kind of vegetable & cheese dish that slips my mind right now.
It's fine.
Just fine as a neighborhood Indian restaurant.
Been around forever. Service is friendly and effusive.
A good crowd of regulars. The bar is actually quite pleasant to hang out at.
The food is solid typical North Indian fare. It should be less greasy. The Chicken Tikka Masala is drowned in its sauce.
For me, the food highlight and the distinctive menu item is the Cheese Naan. Think of it as a delectable Indian quesadilla. Yummy and melty.
The garlic naan was really thick and garlicky and yummy. Service was good. Chicken curry was ok, but the meat tasted a little old. The Navratta Korma was blah. The peas were undercooked and the sauce tasted thin. They were also supposed to be spicy and medium, respectively, but neither was very hot at all. The entrees came with giant portions of rice, but the rice was clumpy and not fragrant.
(3.5 stars)
My friend and I came here for a quick dinner that evolved into a 2 hour affair. We ordered the lamb vindaloo (properly spiced, perfect portion), chicken briyani (a little dry for my taste), mango lassi and naan. Their naan was so fresh that we had to order another plate. I also loved their mango lassi...it could rival the thickness of Ayurveda Cafe's.
Cute, standard fare for an Indian-American restaurant. Considering that half the restaurant was brown, I would say that the food is pretty decent. I'm definitely coming back.
Awesome food! I always get the chicken Makni cause its just all type of awesome! I asked for it spicy and my mouth was burning but thats how i like it lol and its sweet too. Perfect combination. They are always very nice and accomidating too
I got takeout here the night I moved into my apartment and was desperate for Indian food. I had a standard Americo-Indian meal of chicken tika masala and nan bread. It was about $15 or so but there was enough food to last me two dinners. They also included a thing of rice and some condiments
The food itself was delicious. The tika masala was delicious even reheated. The sauce had the perfect combination of spices. The nan seemed a little garlicy though, but I like garlic bread so it's ok. Just not what I was expecting.
I was a bit disappointed in this place. I had the Navrattan Korma (sp?) and it wasn't as yummy as I had hoped/expected it to be. Even though I am a huge fan of Indian food and there are very few Indian restaurants around here, I probably won't be going back to Indian Cafe. Average service, average food. Prices are expected for this neighborhood, but the food isn't really worth it in my opinion.
Went to visit recently and was rather disappointed. Feels like it used to be much better. Lamb curry is still good as well as cafe bread, but other dishes were mediocre and service was lackluster. I'll probably stick to delivery if I have a hankering for Indian food. Still, it's not bad by any means and prices are damn reasonable. Oh yeah, I don't recommend lamb vindaloo at all. One of the saltiest things I've ever eaten!
A very solid choice for Indian food in the Columbia area. I really like their chicken mughlai. They're really fast with delivery -- often comes in under 15 minutes, so a good choice when you're short on time.
Sooooo good!! My friend lives around the corner of this place, so we stumbled in here completely starving after a long day of shopping. We had samosas, garlic naan, lamb vindaloo and chicken tikka masala. It was all really great. And the staff was extremely nice as well. It seems to be a pretty popular place too... we were there around 6 on a Saturday and it was already really filling up.
Easily the best service I've ever had in Manhattan. Everything was quick, my water glass was never empty and the food was extremely good. Portions were excellent, spices were excellent -- I didn't feel let down in any aspect of my experience. I was very happy to pay the bill and leave a generous tip. I will definitely be back!
My favorite of the neighborhood Indian restaurants. Great flavors and interesting specials. Try the onion kulcha, a mango lassi and the special entree of the night! Each person gets a portion of basmati rice and a papadom portioned out on the plates as they are served, while the entrees are served family style so all can share.
Excellent food and atmosphere. Quiet restaurant. I was disappointed that one must pay for poppadoms, but I was assuaged by the miraculous food. The Aloo na'an is not to be missed, and that is only the beginning.
I've ordered delivery from this place twice, both times lured by their generously late delivery hours (up to midnight). At that time of night my standards are, if anything, lower than usual but I found the food disappointingly bland both times. Not just as in 'not enough spice' bland (how much spice is 'enough' is a matter of opinion), but as in 'not enough flavor' bland.
