This is my favourite Indian restaurant in Boston - I've tried a few in the area and they weren't very good. India Quality doesn't look very promising - and I'm always suspicious of restaurants with boastful names - but it exceeds expectations. The chicken tikka saag is delicious, the mango lassi is thick and creamy, and the breads are fluffy and wonderful. The service is great too - friendly without being overpowering, attentive and efficient. They offer you hot tea if you're waiting to pick up an order, and for divali they offer a few Indian sweets.
Stop by if you're in the area, you won't regret it
I had yet to find an Indian restaurant in Boston encompassing the same wonderful hospitality and attentiveness found at my beloved India Palace in Memphis.
Until we stumbled upon India Quality Restaurant.
Upon entering the restaurant, you find yourself in a cozy den-like atmosphere with romantic lighting and mouth watering aromas of Indian spice filling your nose. The servers are delightful from the get-go, ensuring that your beverage glass is always full and they are completely adept at "silent service" in which they are available just when you need them, but not so available that they become a bother or too annoying. The food was very delicious: the vegetable samosas had the right nip of spiciness, the chicken korma was perfectly creamy and savory, and the chicken tikka masala was absolutely delightful. I tried Maharaja beer for the first time and its smooth, malty flavor accompanied the dishes well. I know I've already mentioned it once, but the servers were just so great. Definitely a place to check out if you are in the neighborhood and craving good Indian food.
Coming from Hickville, Tennessee, I was not used to eating any ethnic food down South... but moving right across from India Quality, I am happy to say that I'm a regular, eating here at least once a month.
There are always 4-5 waiters working the tables, who constantly make sure your water is no less than 3/4 cup full. They're really cute, always trying to make small-talk, and I always end up giggling and having a ball.
Truth be told, I've only tried 3 dishes here: Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Tikka Saag (spinach sauce and white meat), and the Lamb Vindaloo (dark brown warm curry)...all of which are fantastic. I loooove spicy food, so I always get everything Extra, Extra hot. And I usually regret it within 2 minutes of digging in.
I would give it 5 stars, but I'm taking away one star for the naan (every time I get it, it's flavorless no matter what type I get--coconut, garlic, etc.) as well as the dinner prices.
Always come here for lunch--portions are about the same, but half the price.
Happy Eating! :D
This was my first taste of Indian food and I'm really glad it was at India Quality. The food was very tasty - flavourful and perfectly spicy (even when you say mild, it still has a good kick).
I would give this place 5 stars, but there are a couple things that I didn't like. Water refills is at either ends of the extremes - either you get none for a while or your cup is refilled after every sip. It can get kind of annoying.
Also, they charge for extra rice. I'm not sure if this is normal at Indian restaurants, but I was surprised when I saw it on the bill.
Besides those two things, it's a great place to eat (especially go during lunch when their prices are muuuuch cheaper - about half the price of dinner).
Very good Indian food, large appetizers (at least, the pakoras were huge), and nice ambiance about it. The food was spicy and delightful and was a good base for later hockey-induced beer drinking. Good show.
Pretty standard Indian fare, though the service was SPECTACULAR. They were so attentive it was bordering overkill. I'm pretty sure they came over every 5-10 minutes to see if everything's okay, and if you take a sip of your water they WILL refill it at lightning speed. We had about 6 or 7 dishes to share, and my favorite was probably the chicken tikka masala (I know, I'm so adventurous..) But really, the food was nothing to write home about. I'd maybe eat here if I lived next door but would definitely not travel any further for this.
Ah, India Quality. Jack of entrees; Master of naan.

India Quality is simply THE BEST Indian Restaurant in Boston, if not Massachusetts. I've been to every Indian restaurant in the city dozens of times and keep coming back to good old IQ.
Excellent food and adorable location underground. The sauce with my molai kofta was perfect but the pakoras used in the dish were uninspiring. Paratha was just right, and I liked some of the atypical accompaniments with the dinner. Papadum is perfect and peppery. Prices reasonable. Only negatives were the garrulous college kids and the bathrooms - which also gives a view into the kitchen which didn't look very modern/spiffy.
Went here last night for a friend's going away dinner. My friends are well aware that I've strayed away from Indian food ever since India, but I actually came because I wanted to try vindaloo; everybody tells me how spicy it is and often like to brag about how they finished a plate of it. I had to see what the big deal was. There was a bunch of us, so we did it up family style: shrimp vindaloo, lamb rogan josh, matar paneer, regular nan, vegetable masala. I also go a mango lassi.
Result: I actually ate it. and I generally liked it. Going down the list, shrimp vindaloo was pretty good. I don't think I will order shrimp next time though...maybe chicken or lamb. and YES it was pretty damn spicy. It was quite odd because I would eat a few spoonfuls with rice and not really feel the spice. Minutes later I could feel the heat growing in my mouth and the sweat coming out of my pores. I think it's doable though. I really liked the lamb rogan josh. The matar paneer was pretty good, and the vegetable masala was just meh. Mango lassi was just ok too.
The service was ok, but a few things annoyed me. The stupid pani wala water man kept on elbowing me as he reached for each glass, didn't say excuse me, and pretty much reached over me the entire night. Pretty rude. They also screwed up our order and gave us lamb curry instead of the rogan josh, and kinda acted like it was our fault. If the service was a little better this would be a 4 star review, but today it is just a 3. But at least I know one place where I can eat Indian in Boston!
I can't say that I'm fully qualified to compare this indian restaurant to others in Boston being that it is only one of two that I have visited thus far since moving here. That being said, I had a great dinner here that was on par with my favorite spot back in Memphis. It's all a little hazy, as we stumbled into this place after a few drinks with some friends we spontaneously made at Boston Beer Works. Service was great, and I liked the intimate atmosphere. I look forward to going back here soon.
Some serious yum! Saag paneer and chicken tikka masala were absolutely to-die for. More than satisfying portion sizes, AMAZING naan, great service-- I'm taking off only one star though because the bathrooms are pretty filthy. But the food is super yummy! Probably the best Indian food I've had since leaving New Haven, and before that, since forever.
way overrated. waiters were very pushy. they want you to order drinks, dessert, and extra food. apparently they are on commission. i thought i had walked into an auto dealership.
they also act like they want you out the door fast.
please tell the water guy to stop hovering; he tries to fill the water glass every time you take two sips.
food was ok/good but overpriced and minimal. had the chana dal which came with white rice and that was it - no nan - just two lonely items, dal and rice. luckily there were the excellent condiments.
their punjab palace (same owner) is much much better. the food is better and the waiters are much nicer all around. the palace has a similar menu but has a few excellent items india quality does not have.
with india quality it is all about money - with punjab palace it is all about service, so i won't be back to india quality.
India Quality is fine Indian dining at its very best from start to finish. With a very accessible location in Kenmore Square right off the T, it is extremely easy to get to. The staff is extremely courteous and also quiet which allows a nice and peaceful atmosphere, rather than most restaurants that are like cafeterias, with each person trying to yell over the next.
They have an assortment of Naans which is flat bread with spices and is served with cabbage and chutney. I have tried all of them, but the garlic is my favorite...but not recommended if you are on a date...
They have so many choices on their menu that it is difficult to choose...of course they have great chicken tikka, as well as chana saagwala always served with bismati rice. There is absolutely no way you could ever be hungry after any of these dishes, if you are,,,,,it is time to reevaluate your health.
I am backing this place completely over all the other Indian restaurants in Boston, India Quality does it right over and over again.
I live nearby, so I tend to either order take out or sit down at this restaurant quite a bit. That being said, I have never had any bad food here. The only complaint that anyone I've been with was a professor who asked for a dish without the cream/milk and was disappointed when it came out kinda dry. But I love their saag paneer and chicken vindaloo almost too much. The naan has always been good as well, and the rice is normally plentiful, but sometimes it can be a bit oddly cooked.
The service is also very good, to the point of being a bit ridiculous at times. I don't think my water glass has ever been completely empty, because they have someone almost constantly refilling the glasses, which is good with the spiciness of the food. Even when I come in for take out, they are incredibly nice and offer tea while I wait for my order to be finished.
The dinner price can sometimes be a bit much for a poor struggling college student, but the lunch prices are much better. But I've always gone home happy, so I can't really complain.
Very good food and good service. The lunch specials are really well priced and I could eat there and be happy about it every day of the week. I recommend the Shahi Paneer - I get it everytime.
It's also important to note they have very good water waiters - I've barely drank anything and I find my cup is quickly filled up again!
What's not to love about IQ? Everything I've had here has been rich, flavorful, and spiced right (mild is actually mild, and spicy is actually really spicy). My favorite, though, is definitely the saag paneer, which has some great spices in it that makes it darker and less kelly-green than the ones at some other places. And don't get me started on the naan...it tastes good even when I take-out.
And can we talk about value? If you order before 3 pm, you get essentially the same thing for half the price. I can easily make 2 or even 3 meals out of one order...for less than $8? Sweet! Everyone who works here is fairly nice, too. I'm not even going to deduct a star for that one time there was a fruit fly in my water.
Other little things I like: the music. I always recognize at least one song (so maybe I have a little Bollywood side to me you didn't know about), and proceed to embarrass my friends by singing along. And the candy by the door presented on a three-tier dessert tower. Free pixie stix? Shoot, I haven't had one of those since element...I mean, the last time I went to IQ.
This place is actually really nice from the moment you enter. There is a nice warm feeling when you enter because of the decor and all the aroma's of Indian spices in the room. Good place for couples or families. I've had take out from here and dined in. It's a great little place in the heart of Kenmore Square. They keep your water glass filled and are always very nice and helpful. The portions are plentiful as well. I always have some food wrapped up to go. I just wish Indian food in Boston was a little bit cheaper. If you want authentic Indian food, I would skip across the river to Inman Square and check out Punjabi Dhaba instead. For the price same price, you'll probably get 50% more food and a very lively atmosphere.
So the food is pretty good here, I will admit. But best in the city? No.
The wife and I went here on a cold Sunday night before seeing the very sexy Tom Jones in concert around the corner (at Avalon...I mean HOB). The stairs going in made me wonder how many people slip and fall going in or leaving in the winter.
We ordered poppadoms and mango chutney for an appetizer and each ordered our own dish with some naan to split. The poppadoms came out with their usual sauces and we had just about finished them by the time the chutney got there (defeating the purpose of ordering them together).
The food came out in an average amount of time and it was good, no question. The naan was pretty tasty, but overall there was nothing spectacular about the meal. I'm not even sure if this could be considered the best Indian food in the Back Bay.
We will give it another chance one day, but to be honest, I have had better service and food.
I love the people here, they are super nice. I have only ever gotten take out but I have ordered from here at least six or seven times. While I order take out they always invite me to sit and have some tea or coffee on the house while I wait (thanks!)
My favorite thing here is their vegetable samosas. You get three medium sized ones. I know they are fried and bad for you, but these are totally worth it. They are crispy on the outside but not too greasy, and the potato filling on the inside is to die for- all the Indian spices are so flavorful-much more so than any other samosa I have ever had, EVER.
The appetizer plates are good but usually a bit too much fried food for one person unless you're really hungry (my friend felt kind sick from eating an appetizer plate- but I think most people would if they ate like 10 different appetizers).
I have tried a bunch of naans from Aloo (potato) to Paner (cheese) to garlic and Peshwari (coconut) they have all been really yummy.
They also make a great mango lassi, just very nice yogurty tang.
For main dishes I have tried the Vegetable Briyani, and some of the other veggie lunch specials. It's all good. I love spicy food. If you like Indian, you'll be at home here.
Oh wait almost forgot- the lentil soup- so hot and spicy- try it!
goofy name, great food.
proprietor was our host. a gentleman, and informative about where he gets his spices, and how he has his staff prepare the food.
don't let the name prevent you from experimenting here.
This restaurant is very clean, welcoming, and comfortable. My wife ordered a soup that was not to her liking, and our server exchanged it for a different soup with no problem, and he did not charge us for the second cup of soup. For her second cup of soup, she got the coconut soup which was excellent. She originally ordered the lentil soup which was just too spicy.
The vegetable pakoras are outstanding, and so is the spinach roti (bread). I had the lamb curry for dinner, which came with basmati rice. I ordered the dish "mild", but it was still quite spicy for my taste. However, I ate it all because it was delicious!
All of the employees at India Quality are polite and attentive, which made the experience even better. We certainly plan to return to this restaurant! It was excellent!!!
Hands down, my favorite Indian restaurant this side of Queens, NY. My favorite dishes are the curry cabbage with peas (don't know the official name but it comes as a free side dish with any luncheon special), chicken korma (superb), lamb vindaloo (the best), saag paneer (excellent), and their espresso is hooooot and gooooood.
I have been going to this place for over seven years and in the past year the wait staff has gotten younger and as a result the quality of the service has gone way down. I almost left the place for dead after having been rude to by young wait staff two visits in a row. I know, I should have gone to a manager but that was my choice to just give a $1 tip instead.
The very last time I went there, the wait staff was new and excellent so maybe there were others who complained and they hired better people.
I highly recommend India Quality. They are a great sit-in restaurant and perfect for a first date.
Let me begin by saying the people know our name. That is how frequently we order there.
God. This food is so delicious. Incredibly high quality flavors, detailed care in the flavor combination.
I have tried almost everything vegetarian or chicken based on their menu. It was all good, if not delicious.
The staff is friendly, helpful and willing to make changes to accommodate picky eaters. My vegan friends, and meat loving family can both happily dine here.
The appetizer combination platter is delicious. Ask for extra tamarind sauce if you love it as much as I do.
Their naan is yummy, and poori and .. .well ALL the breads are good.
Its also on the low end of average priced for Indian food, I've found. Everyone I've taken here (which as been numerous) has loved their food as well.
Pros-
Delicious
Friendly Staff
High quality ingredients and preparation
Plenty of tables
Cons-
I can't think of even one.
This was my favorite Indian restaurant in the area, until they opened up a sister location closer to me.
I still love India Quality though - the decor is very warm and cozy, the food is fantastic and the service is great. They are always very friendly and accommodating.
I've gotten the appetizer platter, 2 meals and naan for me & 2 friends and we were STUFFED. We usually do our staple of samosas, chicken tikka (so great) and garlic naan and it's plenty. Great wine selection too!
Food was fine, but I have a bone to pick. I got a $30 gift certificate from a student organization for "Administrative Professionals' Day", and I thought, great, I have always wanted to try this place, that's like three lunches!
I went in one Monday when I was broke, thinking, yum, and good time to not have to pay. I had a nice lunch, and when I gave them the gift certificate, they said, that's too much. I said yes, give me change or deduct the amount. No can do. They refused to do either, saying, they just couldn't possibly be writing out reduced certificates every time someone didn't use the whole thing! Can you imagine, all the time it would take.
So I was faced with forking over my thirty dollar certificate, which had been bought with thirty actual dollars! Already paid to them! or paying my last 12 dollars in the bank. I finally decided to pay, I didn't want them to get a 20 dollar tip! But I was livid, and I still am. That was perfectly good money, and I have NEVER heard of a gift certificate that requires you use the whole thing!
To add insult to injury, they accidentally overcharged me, canceled the transaction, then charged the right amount. As I mentioned, I had 12 dollars in the bank, and by the time the cancellation went through, I had already been charged an overdraft, and I am still working on sorting that out, a week later.
I am going to get a bunch of takeout with that certificate (because I am never going to spend 30 dollars at once!) and never go back.
If you actually look at the descriptions for each 1-5 star rating and line up your actual experience/opinion of what you are reviewing and your final score of that establishment you might end up giving a pretty shitty rating. This seems to happen to me a lot. I'm really not this picky in real life. Well, I am but I am going to lie with impunity here because this is the internet and you probably don't know me anyway.
This review could be about my entire, broad sweeping, all encompassing, general dislike of Indian food. I think there is just too much going on for my taste buds to handle. Or maybe I have never really learned to order correctly, or still have not been to a decent Indian place. Indian food = all looks, smells, taste the same to me.
This spot, was dead quiet and seated us in moments, had our drinks in moments, had our appetizers (Samossa) in moments (scary fast, DING of the microwave?), had waiters that liked to stare at my wifes boobalas - not glance but rather shoot really creepy stares, had various curried things served to us that may or may not have been the described meat products (goat and lamb) and had us feeling rather rushed in and out in under 30 minutes.
Sooooo, don't believe the hype or wear a turtleneck and keep your boobs to yourself but either way as the I star says 'Eek! Methinks not'.
First time I came here the dishes were fantastic. But second time around...it's not all that great anymore. The curry was excellent, the yogurt drink excellent, the choice on the menu was alright. The service was ... awkward.
Other than that...food is great. Service was ok.
Once in awhile, life throws you a bone. You'll find that first experience was, in fact, the best one and the rest that follow seem to pale in comparison.
I ate Indian food for the first time at India Quality. India Quality. What a funny name when you think about it, yet so apropos - short, sweet, and to the point. Find quality indian food here, it says to me.
I tried to never have the same dish twice. Chicken Tikka Masala with succulent fall at your finger tips meat, Tikka Saag with the green spinach that's oh so perfect to scoop up in naan, Coconut Korma rich and savory. I must admit, however, that the East Asian in me mixed everything with a full plate of rice and piled up each morsel with a bit of naan.
I once tried vindaloo level spiciness.
My friends warned me saying "It's pretty hot.. like really hot"
To which I replied, "I'm Korean. We eat spicy food too. I can take it! *beat chest*"
Oh how the gods of Indian cuisine smited me for my bravado. Quality is what you'll find at India Quality and when you ask for vindaloo they will give you vindaloo. Let's just say my face was redder and sweatier than after a night of soju.
Service is always spot on and I never been left wanting. India Quality, being the first, is the measure to which I've judge all others. Perhaps, some day we'll meet again, you and I.
IQ also has this magnificent dutch candy in the lobby as you leave. A hard candy with a bit of lovely jam in the middle. A candy that I greedily stuffed my pockets with before leaving. Enough so I could munch on them for the rest of the week.. or longer. I wasn't the only one either..
Hey! You'd do it too.. and I shared!
review 6/8/2008
I.M.Y.
I was brought up on French, Italian and oriental food. I've found delicious onion soup, pasta and thai curry in Boston. I have yet to find a great Indian restaurant. I've tried Kashmir, Indian Samraat and Bhindi Bazaar. They're all awful - I don't know what they're trying to pass off as Indian food - but this pokey little place - that charges about $16 per head - was at least OK. The chicken tikka saag was way too heavy and the rice left a lot to be desired, but it wasn't as bad as some of the food I've tried at other Indian restaurants and didn't make me sick.
One of the things I've lamented since moving to Boston is the quality of Indian food. Enter India Quality! (Like the play on words?)
This is good Indian. The spicy is spicy. The samosas are delicious.
However, it is a little overpriced, and the service can be slow. The food definitely makes up for this, though. It's definitely worth the splurge when craving Indian!
Sometimes, I just don't want to eat at Fenway, because I like to be able to afford life afterwards. So, while waiting for my Mom and her friend to get out of the torrential downpours on the Mass Pike and to Fenway, Joe and I decided we had enough time I actually go to a sit-down restaurant. It was a toss-up between Thai and Indian, but obviously, since I'm writing this review, Indian won.
India Quality reminds me of a hotel restaurant, because that what it looks like, almost exactly. And it's not a fancy hotel restaurant, more like if the Holiday Inn decided having hotel restaurants were cool or something. However, the Indian themed pictures and music made up for it.
We weren't extremely hungry, so we decided to get some soup and share and entre to both save money and save our bellies from exploding. I got the lentil soup and Joe got the coconut soup. My lentil soup was extremely flavorful and thick, and I liked the addition of whole peas as well. I stole a bite of Joe's and it was different and interesting, however, I happily stuck with my lentil soup.
For our entre we split a Spinach Roti and the Makki Mushroom Curry. The Spinach Roti went perfectly with our meal, and I used my remaining bites to get every last inch of the delicious sauce out of the bowl. The Curry was very tasty, and the addition of creamed corn complimented the mushrooms really well. I was slightly surprised that Joe let us get that dish, considering I thought he would want some meat. The portion was perfect for two people sharing. The only thing that was disappointing was that I asked for medium spice (Joe doesn't do spiciness) and it was hardly spicy, much to my chagrin and Joe's delight.
The prices weren't too shabby either. I believe when all was said and done we spent less than $30 (Mango Lassi, Mango Shake, 2 Soups, Entre, and Roti), which I think was an excellent value, especially given the location. While not as delectable as my precious Pubjab Palace, this place is a solid 4 stars. I'd even go so much as 4.25. Oh, I also want to mention the assortment of goodies that are located near the door, to grab on your way out. I was too busy yelling directions at my mother on how to find Ipswich St. and therefore, could not indulge.
I generally find that cool looking restaurants suck and not-so-nice ones have great food. India Quality is no exception. Its located on a "basement" floor with basic lighting and table layout, so you can guess its in the later category.
The portions are generous, the food is great, and the prices are reasonable. They also have free candy while you are waiting or on the way out the door.
edit: they go overboard on spiciness. Be wary! mild=medium, medium=spicy.
The food is decent. The prices are reasonable (especially if you get one of the dinners for two). But good Lord, never have I emerged from an Indian restaurant smelling so strongly of spices.
I live pretty close to India Quality, and as a result have found myself taking numerous peoples to India Quality. I think that my measure of how good this place is was when I took my friend Raki here (shes indian), and she subsequently declared (this is pretty damn close to legit indian food), I knew it was a match made in heaven (with India Quality).
The food here is AWESOME. The naan here is pretty much the best naan you could get in boston. We always order in a family style when we come here, usually chicken masala (typical greatness), a lamp vindaloo/curry, and a beef curry. Always choose the mild to spicy level because anything more and you can't taste your food.
Recently, the owner turned us on to Coconut Naan. When paired with spicy food, coconut naan is the perfect balance of sweet and savory, and really helps to neutralize the spicy garlic intense flavor of the dishes with a subtle but great coconut flavor.
I will hold steady in the face of criticism that this place is probably the 2nd best place for Indian food in boston (the 1st being guru the caterer), offers really well spiced garlic intense curries and stews, with a really great variety of naans all cooked to order.
and then when you get home you can all discuss how you all smell like garlic cloves
India Quality ,a small little subterranian melting pot of amazing spices and succulent tasties can easily be referred to as the best indian establishment in all of Boston. I can say this with out batting an eye as I've been eating they're food for years and am constantly blown away by the love that's puts into each dish. It tastes as if my grandmother was indian (she's jewish with eastern european roots) and happen to be slaving over a tandori oven all day just to make it for meee. Thats the feeling of freggin love homes.
Seriously, the food is Quality. I know its cliche given the name of the spot, but come on.... I mean, come on. Unlike most things in life which happen to be misleading, India Quality has done the Boston public a favor and clearly named they're humble abode appropriately, so all of us not from indian descent know where to go for the authentic Indian flavors.
Everything is brilliantly good. From the mango lassi to the nan to the chicken tikki masala, to the vindaloo to the Daal. The Daal people. There is no denying India Quality supremeness over all other indian spots within the relm of Beantown.
Did i mention that also have a full bar including Samuel Smith Beers (a london favorite). Outside of India the largest indian population is in London. So it makes prefect sense to serve british beer. Thats the thought that goes into food, the service and atmosphere at India Quality.
Go there, split a few dishes with a friend and enjoy...
Boom goes the dynamite.
I really love indian food and this place has never disappointed me. I have been to india before and pretty much eaten every single indian dish possible. If you don't like spicy food I would order chicken korma, which is not spicy at all but it has wonderful flavors. But if your a braver soul and like to sweat a little during your meal than I'd order the vindaloo and ask for it spicy. I almost always go here when I have a cold and I am instantly decongested. I'd recommend actually going there instead of ordering take out because I have always experience great service. If you are a student they will give you 15% off your meal.
Dishes that I have had from there that are good:
Vindaloo
Saag
Korma
Tikka Masala
This place is seriously so good, but I should only be allowed to go like once a year. This is why: whenever I go, I play a game with myself. In the game, I try to impress/disgust my dining companions and all of the waitstaff by eating ridiculous amounts of everything. You know the chutneys you find on the table? Yeah, I finish those. Eat 2 or 3 nans, devour the sampler appetizer and my very own samosa chaat (not on the menu but they'll make it if you ask) and then polish off a couple of main dishes. Yeah, suffice it to say people are left speechless. Aaaanyway, this place is damn good.
If you want to sit down indoors on not-uncomfortable chairs and eat decent Indian food for a medium amount of money, this is your place.
The decor is unremarkable, and the food *should* be unremarkable, except that so many low-key Indian joints in the Boston area are so much worse. It would be nice if places like this were considered the bare minimum, but right now, with things as they are: competence=excellence.
I'll say this - their samosas are good but a little small. No buffets, ever, but their lunch specials are extremely affordable, and their chole saag (or chana sagwalla or whatever) is quite good. Actually, it's my favorite place for chole saag. People who love Chicken Tikka Masala, love it even more at India Quality.
Sometimes they have specials. Sometimes the special is goat curry. Do not order the goat curry, unless you're comfortable with pieces of bone attached to your meat. (I wasn't).
When I used to live near here, this was my favorite place to eat when my motivation for going out was, "I'm too lazy to feed myself". Fine Art this ain't, but it's good value for money, and *much* better value for money than the numerous similar places scattered across the Boston-Cambridge area.
It's a fine place for takeout, but really, if you're not going to come in and sit down, go with Guru's instead.
Went here for lunch and was very impressed by the food, service and value! Our bill was $24 for two lunch entrees, nan bread, and a pakora appetizer. It looks more expensive for dinner, though.
Like Tom E., I was very disappointed by this place after the rave reviews and claims of supremacy. Although I didn't grow up with the wealth of Indian cuisine that the UK offers, I did grow up in the Middle East, in a country where we have enough South Asian influence/residents to ensure that food from that region is usually always good there. Suffice to say, I like good Indian food, I've been spoiled by previous excellent availability and I really hate the bland/bleh stuff - it just ends up feeling like you made yourself heavily full for no good reason.
Well, I'd never heard this word before I came to Boston but MEH! If it deserves meh! I mean, I feel bratty because the people are really nice and prices are about the same as most other Indian places, so all that is fine. It's just the curries and stuff! Where is the taste?!
It's not even that the level of spiciness wasn't enough - it was just a general bland lack of flavour. As for the rice... well, yeah it's not bad (I mean, it's rice), but you know, just cos it's this 'pretty' looking multicoloured white and orange rice doesn't mean it's better than the fragrant, perfectly-cooked basmati or jasmine from other places. The breads are pretty decent, but again, something just feels wrong because they're quite oily/greasy/heavy compared to other places. The sauce had too many big onion pieces in it for my liking. Although the meat pieces were big and not stingy, which I really appreciated, they felt like the flavour was on the outside, not marinated/flavoured in the meat, and it just wasn't that tender, a bit dry.
I know I'm being picky-critical, I'm sorry. I know I'm being extra judgmental because I usually like my Indian food bursting with spices and flavour. But this place really disappointed me, not just with the other stuff but especially with the curries, and I can think of a whole slew of other Indian places I'd go instead. Good for them that so many other people like it though...!
