3 reviews for India House Restaurant
I was surprised to see the review from Melissa W. below. I eat at India House often, though I order off the menu so I can't speak to the buffet. Bisht, the owner and chef, comes from a talented family of chefs working in cities like London, Seoul and Hong Kong. Rockford is luckly to have someone of his caliber.
My husband and I have gotten to know Bisht and his wife Savatree over the 10 years he's owned India House, and you couldn't ask for kinder, harder working people. My advice is to indulge in the cultural experience and start off with a bottle of Indian wine. We usually order an Indian Shiraz that is delicious and stands up to strong flavors. Talk to the server about what you like and don't like. Tell them you want authentic Indian, un-Americanized food and ask what they suggest. Indian food doesn't have to be hot!
Our favorite dishes are Rogan Josh, (a spicy lamb curry), basmati (not the plain rice, but the rice cooked with cardamom, corriander and cumin), raita, (yoghurt based sauce used like sour cream in Mexican food to tame the heat), Bengan Bartha (an succulent eggplant stew that is very mild), fish cooked with mint and fresh cilantro. The tandoori plate also makes a great appetizer. Don't forget the naan; India House has the best bread around.
For dessert (when we have room), we get masala tea and share a galob jamon; three delectible dumplings floating in a swwet, rose-scented syrup - somewhat similar to baba rhum.
Plan to spend some time there. It's not meant to be 'fast food' unless you have the buffet. I think Melissa had an off-day experience. We can't afford to go more than once or twice a month, but we always have a good time and are completely taken care of. We'll have to go this weekend and see how they're doing for ourselves, but as of late October, Inda House was as good as ever!
What happened to my beloved India House? Each year, she seems to wither. I have been to the India House on Grand St. in Chicago a lot back in the day, and their food would stand up to the competition. And I was spoiled by my trips to Little India on Devon.
Here in lovely Rockford, there is no competition. I agree with Dez, the butter chicken is SO thin. I miss the old staff, there was an older gentlemen and his wife, and the food was steller. The buffet is now mediocre. Last time I went might be my last time. The tandoori chicken was bloody, there was no chicken in the butter chicken, and the naan was lacking. I had to refill my own water. What happened, guys?
just a note to let the world know that rockford has finally arrived ... yes we now have a decent indian restaurant. If you went here years ago and were disappointed, please go back. The food is exciting, I had an appetizer called pari pulee (I think) that I had only ever read about before. I will be back. I will be bringing friends; go go go!
