A few weeks back, I went to several Indian grocery stores in my area in search of what would be my favorite.  India Cash and Carry and Madras are my favorites from that search but I think India Cash and Carry takes the cake because it's got so much more of a selection.  It was more expensive on some items though.

Love that you can get fresh veggies, ready made eats, tons of vegetarian options and henna in lil tubes for your girlie hang-out nights! :)

See ya there!

This place is awesome!  I buy a lot of my spices here in little cellophane bags and refill the jars at home.  Plus, dried goods and grains are way cheaper here.  The produce is always fresh, varied and interesting.

Don't forget to check out the utensils/pots and pans and so forth.  You might just find something really neat you didn't know you needed.  Take time if you can (sometimes they are really crowded) to look through the spices, spice mixes and so forth.  I try to pick up one intersting thing I've never tried before on each trip.

Although they don't carry too much of one thing in their fresh produce department, $1.39 a pack for strawberries, $1.29/lb of apricots and $1.29/lb of nectarines was enough to catch my eye here...Filled up my cart with fresh fruits for good prices to bring to the office nearby

I also found henna powder for hair...from Japan - great for Asian hair and only $3.99! Nice !!!! No longer need to bug my Indian friends to get it for me now..

Also noticed they have some home made goodies there..cakes, desserts, and rotis..breads, no nahn though =(

This place was suggested to us by my husband's Indian co-workers.

We have been looking for some Indian spices that we weren't able to find at our regular shopping spots.

We were in luck here! We found everything we needed and more!

This market is a little crowded and hectic, but they do get you checked out quickly and efficiently.

The spices here are much cheaper than at other markets, (although they only have a limited selection.)

I'll def finitely be back:)

I'm not usually one to write harsh or overly critical reviews, but almost feel like it for this particular place.

To be fair, this is a pretty decent place to find all your Indian food/grocery needs. Also has an aisle for bath and body products, medicines/herbal items, and puja items. I like the large grocery sections. There's also several sweetmeats/bakery items near the front of the store, and chaat/snacks such as samosas. In short, they have a pretty good inventory and the staff workers work really hard to keep everything in stock.

Unfortunately, the following issues have pretty much stopped me from coming here anymore:

* always super crowded whenever I come here...maybe just came at the wrong time, so guess its not really the place's fault they're so popular

* long lines

* a bit confusing walk to the cash registers (you see, there are 3-4 people working cash registers and whomever is available next will call out for the 1st person waiting in line...so you really have to pay lots of attention to know exactly which register to go to).

Unfortunately, once I was called while at the very front of the line, I once went to the wrong cash register, as the crowds and noise were getting to me and I suppose I didn't hear properly. The cashier asked me if I had CUT THE LINE...sorry for the caps, but I was shocked of almost being accused of "cutting the line", something I did not do. Luckily the man before me in line was nice enough to vouch that I did properly wait my turn.

In any case, I'm not returning to a place where one of the cashiers seemed to think I was a "line cutter", unless someone else I am with insists on going there. Besides, there are other Indian grocery stores that are closer to where I live.

contrary to what the name suggests, they are not cash only and do accept credit card.
vast selection of groceries, spices, flours, frozen goodies, snacks. they also had fresh baked/fried goods, which looked good but i didn't try. the place also smells awesome from all the spices.

This place ROCKS!!!

I went on a Saturday afternoon - whoops! Ignore how busy it is...how long the lines are...and the general craziness of the store.  If you KNOW and LOVE Indian food, you have got to check this place out.  (and I shouldn't be telling you this, because it's already way too busy)

They have the BEST selection of core Indian foods (there must have been 9 types of lentils, 12 types of flour, 20 types of rice), wonderful selection of pickled mango, not to mention the cheapest tomato's I've ever seen ($0.69 per lbs).  All the food looked delicious. And if you have the maturity and patience to make it through checkout - you'll cut your food bill in HALF.

As I see it the craziness and the crowds make it authentic Indian, and the prices make it worth my while.

The line is so much better after they implemented the auto-checkout number calling. Our strategy?  One person waits in line while the other gets the groceries! Usually, we'll get spices, potatoes, and other veg here.

It's crowded.  It's being stocked right now.  People are everywhere and going in all directions at all speeds.

Little 5 year old boys treat the shopping carts like a Formula One racecar.

If you go there on a weeknight, near closing,  you can literally do all your shopping.....by just waiting in line!

The huge line will snake through the store in such a way that you can hit up all the aisles you would have anyways.......
I got some Dhal Makhani mix, Chikken Tikki, a bag of hot mix, but passed on some limp looking produce.  Cruised by the frozen food case near the end of our journey and stacked up some naans and quickie meals.  Overall, I paid about 30 bucks for quite a few items, so ICC still is a great place for value and authentic Indian foods.

Hey you three!!  You just cut in front of me in line....I tried to do my best passive-aggressive sigh, but to no avail.

No one knew where the line started or ended anyways.

Good selection of fresh vegetables at good price.

I think they prefer you pay with cash if the purchase is $10 or less. The line can be long too if you come in saturday afternoon. But overall it's a great place to buy inexpensive groceries.

I moved into Cali 2 months ago. The first couple of time I serendipitously drove into this place on weekdays. Was very pleased with the experience as well as the items on offer. Broad selection of vegetables, very nice prices, some stuff was less expensive than Walmart and quite fresh as well.

And then it happened...I and my wife stopped by on a Sunday evening. I religiously started from aisle 1 on the right and soon found everyone passing sympathetic glances in my direction. A couple of fellas asked me if I was "in line". And then it hit me: if you go to this place on a weekend evening, you are expected to straightaway join the line and stand with the cart. The line snakes through the perimeter of the shop and finally leaves you at the counter. In fact, all the men were holding their carts and their place in line while the wives scurried to fetch items. What the hell!!!!!!! Even the few red-faced non-Indian locals joined the game.

My wife described the shopping experience as a "television game show". On second thoughts, it was a classic case of the infamous Indian indiscipline - why bother shopping at your own pace when you can cut corners?

And oh, BTW, when you reach the counter, the girls ringing the registers grab your items and slam them roughly into the carry-bags like they were railway clerks handing out tickets at 7:58 PM, they don't want to lose a single customer due to the lengthy queue.

I went to Coconut Hill Indian grocery yesterday, you can shop to your hearts content away from the madding crowd. Nice variety, prices, will be my pick from now on.

NB: To be fair to C&C, my rating has more to do with the experience that what they have to offer. If you are keen to shop here Mon-Thu, you won't be disappointed at all.

I dunno... I shop here all the time - they have all
the goodies I want, yeah, some of the veggies are
pretty lame, but the bulk of them are fine and really
cheap: .25/lb for red onions! They have a large selection
of frozen Indian meals and breads (paratha's, etc.)
and great prices on yogurt (Pavel's $2.29/qt). And
the prices of Hawaiian papaya can't be beat!

As for service, I've found the staff to be extremely helpful
IF you get an Indian staff member... The Non-Indian staff
are indeed a bit dodgy...

This is a great place to get some groceries.  They have good quality food at very good prices.  A few things that's not a plus about it is that it's a small store and you can't get everything you need there.  There is sometimes a long line but it moves fairly quickly.  They have a very good selection of some foods for very low prices.  I've compared some of their prices to places like Lucky (I'm a fan of them too) and they charge less.  Regardless of the occasional long line and not being able to get all my things there, it's still worth it.  I highly recommend this store to everyone.

Excellent selection of Indian prepackaged foods (paneer paranthas, bhaturas, bhujiya etc), spices, dry beans (different dals) and other stuff like cookies, utensils etc.. They have great samosas for just 55 cents each, as good as the ones from my neighborhood in New Delhi.

I have been shopping here for ages. Coming from Santa Cruz, we could visit the valley only once in 2 weeks. Our experinece is that vegetables bought here would stay for quite a while. The veggies bought at other places would rot in a day or two. The lines are crazy, but so what?

My house started smelling weird the other day kind of stinky and undefinable- Could it be a dead mouse or something crazy like that?  I searched through the cupboards till I traced it back to the spices that I bought on a recent cooking class field trip.  In particular the asafoetida- the culprit!  I should have know anything with "fetid ass" in the name would quickly gas me out of the house.  I put it into a ziploc bag, but the smell started to exude from the plastic!  I've stashed it in the freezer for now, but I'm not sure I want to eat something that smells this bad.  My new cookbook- "New Food of Life: Ancient Persian and Modern Iranian Cooking" lists this as an essential spice.  As do Indian recipes.  So I'm going to test the difference between with and without.
If it doesn't add anything...  it's out on its ass
I got this innocuous spice from  this cool grocery store down in Sunnyvale- fully stocked with all kinds of rice and lentils, Indian vegetables, fresh lotus leaves and the spices- don't forget the spices.  On par with Oaktown Chinatown grocery stores, not all the packets are labeled in English.  But friendly people shop here and are more than happy to explain how to use a spice or food item, or point out their favorite brand.  I found salted  plantain and banana chips in the snack aisle, which totally made my day!  I haven't had them since my childhood in Jamaica.  They also had chana snacks (deep fried chickpeas-yummy crunchy spicy!)
My friends went thro the line fairly quickly, but I was looking for Marmite- which they have- and by the time I got around to the front there was a long line.  It moved slowly but that just gave me a chance to quiz people in line about their purchases, plans for cooking, and local recommendations for eating out. (Not a bad way to spend 15 minutes)

In terms of groceries, this place seems to be brimming with shoppers, so I'm guessing that it carries what most people are looking for. However, it is very unclean inside. I felt seriously grossed out by the smells and the dampness of the floors. Couldn't stay in there more than 5 minutes while I walked down 2 aisles. Ended up going elsewhere.

Yes, the veggies are pale and sickly, but the chunna my ex made me was amazing and it was from these tomatoes. When we used the Whole Foods organic ones, we had healthy cali chunna, not my idea of a good indian meal. They have the Deep Paratha which is the best and all the indian Ghee your little heart desires to be smelled frying up in the kitchen. We could really use a good store like this in SF. They have tons of sweets (from Rangoli) and many phone card options to call your friends overseas. The line isnt that bad, it moves fast. Really people, not every store has a quick check.

this is a great place to get indian spices for cheap!!  you can get big bags of spices (as opposed to the small jars at the american grocery stores) for half the price!!  they also have a ton of frozen naans, rotis, and parathas, so you can pretend you rolled out the dough by hand and serve "homemade" bread to your friends.

This is one of the best Indian grocery store in the Bay Area.

I have been to many Indian groceries over the years and most of them have many expired items but in this store I had seen only couple of things and when I pointed out, they refunded the money. I did not see the same things in the shelves when I went next time.

Another good thing is vegetables and groceries are properly arranged and the store is neat & clean for Indian store standards.

Generally selections are good and well priced but some items are little expensive and I also noticed they do not carry some of the South Indian brands but otherwise this is the best store. After trying so many stores, I became a regular here.

Downside is the wait time, some times it takes 30mts. Most of the time one of us would stand in the line and the other would get the things. Another negative aspect is,  If you go late in the night, some vegetables trays are empty and they are not refilled. Best time to go in the weekend is before 11.00AM and weekday is before 6.00PM.

Not sure whether many are aware, they give 5% discount if the purchase is $55 or more.

The vegetables go bad if you don't use them in a day or two.  You can shop to the tune of loud rapping Indian music going on in the background which adds to the chaos.  Its hard to find an empty cart and you tend to bump them into people a zillion times.  I suggest using the small baskets and not being greedy if you want to get out in 20 minutes.  There is generally a big crowd around the okra - somewhat like a competition to find the best bhindi.  You encounter a lot of behenjis and their frustrated hen-pecked husbands so that adds to the entertainment if you are single.  The fruits are not that fresh though really cheap.  The bill comes out to less than $10 for a whole bunch of vegetables.  I like the little kulfi icecream boxes they store.
