It started with a hunt for a blue Manic Panic wig. It hasn't stopped since.

That was the first time I wandered into this great men's and women's boutique that really defines shopping in downtown Royal Oak. To me, Incognito also helps retain some of the city's edgy punk rock past.

If you squint your eyes when you walk out the door you can almost see the kids with mohawks who used to hang out at the corner of 4th and Main back in the mid 90s. But you don't have to know that to appreciate the merchandise inside.

Sometimes I wonder if I'll outgrow Incognito ... I've been shopping here since high school after all. But just the other day I found a pair of killer 6" strappy heels I could never have worn then that seem perfectly appropriate now. So I guess I'm still A-OK and still and Incognito faithful shopper.

I've found cute tees and chic trench coats, and always loved shopping for shoes here. Sometimes pricey, sometimes the best deal in town, it's always worth stopping in.

My dear friend's gorgeous Betsey Johnson tapestry coat swished out on her saucy frame through the door of Incognito two years ago. A good portion of her wardrobe originates from these halcyon shelves, and inspired by her dress sense, I thought the boutique might be the place for me. Certainly the shopfront windows with their everchanging array of glittering shoes and whimsical clothes sets out to appeal.

After going inside, I am not sure what all the fuss is about. Trying to snatch hold of a fading image, surely. Lucking out at the right time? I think so. For so much of Incognito's stock, though, I could go elsewhere -- the Betsey Johnson store in Somerset, DSW for the shoes, online for practically all of it.

Overpriced hip, punk-wannabe clothing mingles with more upscale brands. Doc Martins and Lip Service on one side, Chinese Laundry and Made in Detroit on the other. The remnants of the dyed-in-the-wool goth set who supped on NIN and Neil Gaiman still flutter in, along with the more dramatic, fussy teens out to buy a teeny pinstripe vest and a pair of glossy black pants to go with it. The staggered collection features women's wear heavily over men's, plenty of pricey accessories dripping off shelves. I like that half the store is devoted to shoes and their ilk; I had much more fun thumbing through the boots and heels and trainers than I did the clothes.

They also do a great favour and mark on the price tag what sizes remain, so no point drooling over a cute pair of boots when only size 6.5 is there to be had. I'm hoping their sales hit with regularity.

I'll be no regular. The price point is far above what I care to pay; the tags sure as hell don't justify what you get; and by and large, I feel like the employees and regulars are trying far too hard to be cool to give a damn. If I want that, I'll pop down to Forever 21 or Pacific Sun.

I'm not too fond of their overpriced clothing selection (sometimes it's a bit too trendy for an early 30-something like me), or the fact that you have to come out of the dressing room to look in the mirror (unless they've remedied that sometimes embarrassing situation). But I will say one good thing about Incognito: They have an amazing shoe sale!

Their shoe selection, for men and women, takes up nearly half of the store. It includes everything from high heels and sneakers, to ballet flats and "stripper shoes". Every so often (usually when the fashion season changes) they host a $10 shoe sale. Pretty much every shoe is marked down. But make sure to go early -- the "popular" sizes are the first to go, and all you're left to choose from are size 4 or size 12. But I guess if you have unusually large or small feet, that's a good thing.

I guess I don't really understand this place, or the hype behind it.  The pricing is very high for the clothes, and I've never found one piece here that I was attracted to.  Everything seemed very...gaudy.
I do have to say I am a fan of the shoe selection.  Cute shoes, good pricing.

One of my absolute favorite stores.  I love it.  When all else fails they always save the day.

New Years Eve 2 years ago, I drove around to every mall in the area, downtown Detroit, and back to the mall.  I don't know what I was thinking not just going to Incognito first.  I found the dress that I had been picturing in my mind all day the second I walked in.  I walked out with a total of 3 dresses that I am still to this day in love with.  Not to mention 3 dresses that I have never seen on any other girl.

I don't mind paying a pretty penny for some very original looking clothes that you can't find just anywhere.  I'd also rather give my money to a cool local business like this than some lame chain store at the mall.

They have a lot of really crazy awesome sales from time to time.  You just have to keep a look out for them.  They're accessories are very cute, unique, and reasonably priced.  They also have an amazing shoe selection for both men and women.

Not a great storefront, an OK selection of clothes, and to top it off, not very friendly service. The accessories are a mildly redeeming quality, but not enough for an additional star.

I love it here. I always walk out with either a new pair of funky shoes, a sassy dress or sparkly bauble. The staff are super friendly and always look edgy and fashion forward. if you are on a tight budget or are looking to splurge there is something for everyone.

I've never walked into Incognito and not found a pair of shoes that I wanted - and could afford.  If you love heels, they have a killer selection at really great prices.  Platform 4 inch pumps with gold accents for $50, gladiator style stilletos for $15, over the knee boots for $65.  I always get compliments on what I've found here. Most shoes start in a size 5 and many of them fit a wider foot like mine - which is really hard to find.

Note: I don't believe they accept returns - just exchanges & store credit.

    The shoes!

I like to window shop in the clothing department, unless there is a serious sale.  I love the clothes, of course.  Funky, edgy, expensive.  But the shoes, both for men and women are awesome.  A great selection, and reasonably priced.  Heels, boots, flats, runners, they've got it all.  The purses, belts and accessories complete the offerings.  It's just not a good place for a shopaholic like me.

I really, really want to like this place. I like the concept, and I understand the vibe that they're going for, but there's something about it that just doesn't have me 100% sold.

The mark-up on the clothes they sell borders on outrageous at times. I've found the same pieces at other stores for anywhere from 30-100 dollars less. The staff always has a great appearance (very trendy and fashionable) but aren't always the most helpful. The selection IS eclectic, but again, the prices are a bit high for what they're selling. Not a terrible place to shop, but not one of the ones I'd go out of my way to recommend either.

I try to avoid Incognito at all costs.

You may ask, "Why did you give it four stars then?"

The reason I try to avoid Incognito is because I usually end up spending money I don't have while I'm there.  (Damn you, Visa!  DAMN YOU!)

I cannot say enough about their shoe selection.  I never leave the store without at least one pair of shoes in my bag.  Their accessories and other odds and ends are also to die for.

The only reason why I didn't give Incognito five stars is because their women's clothes run small/aren't made for women who, for lack of a better term, are "chesty".  Other than that factor, this staple of Downtown Royal Oak shopping always seems to be two steps ahead of trends.  For that reason, I salute you Incognito!

Some of my most favorite articles of clothing have come from Incognito. It's a great place to find strange accessories or really unique t-shirts.

I take off one star for the pricing. The prices here are... prohibitive. A lot of the clothing here is really swank, but expect to pay swank prices; this is the only place I've ever tried on a $700 jacket. Maybe that makes me sheltered, or it makes me smart, because I put it back on the rack.

In the same breath, I've also gotten some really great stuff here for cheap. My most favorite hoodie in the world (which, by the way, has lasted longer than any hoodie I've ever owned) only cost $10. I would suggest checking in on the sale rack from time to time; for one reason or another, some great stuff hits the sale rack and ends up being 75% off. I also got a pair of New Rock boots in this way; $100, marked down from $250.

The t-shirts are short-run prints that are really unique; but again, expect to pay "unique" prices, between $20-40 for a shirt. Still, some of the designs merit that sort of pricing.

For men looking to be swank and not ironic, this is the only place in town worth checking out. The ironic can check out Funky 7 instead and be just as happy!

I went to Incognito the other night when I was window shopping in Royal Oak.  We are thinking of moving out there to be closer to work so I wanted to see what the downtown area has to offer.

I was impressed with their selection, especially of dresses and shoes.  Their t-shirts were cool and unique too, but I found them a little pricey for what they were.

Speaking of price... as a native of Ann Arbor I would say I am pretty used to sticker shock when it comes to shopping at "trendy" boutiques.  But even I was a little in shock of how much some of their stuff was priced for.  But like someone else said, they have good stuff on their sales rack-- it doesn't seem to just be the junk that no one wants.  They had a few pair of shoes that were marked down from the $100 range to btwn $10-40, which seemed like a steal, if only they had them in my size.  They also had a few dresses that were reasonable at $40-60, considering they were unique.

    The cons:
I found their sales staff to be a little snooty.  Maybe it's because I am not trendy nor hip, and the only purchase I made that evening was a $10 Hello Kitty toe ring.... They seemed to be a little nicer and accomidating to the "hip" girls making $200 purchases-- but you know, you'll find that kind of service in almost anyplace you go.  Hey, I used to work in retail, I know how it goes..

But I will definately frequent this store when we move out there, especially during the Royal Oak Sidewalk Sales, the weekend of July 18th :)

if you're looking to get pimped out for a night on the town, take a shopping trip to Royal Oak's Incognito to fill your wardrobe with just what it needs for that Saturday night. Offering both men and women a wide variety of clothing, sneakers, sunglasses and accessories, this s the perfect place to go if label reading is your thing. Incognito offers Betsey Johnson dresses, Junk Food brand t0shirts, Pumas, and more! In addition, they offer a great selection of jewelry for the ladies. And if you're trying to block the sultry summer sun from burning out your retinas, check out this boutiques great variety of sunglasses.

The prices at Incognito can be a bit steep, but remember you're purchasing name brand items. Also, the staff has never been too terribly friendly and always comes off as being "too cool for school". So, don' t venture in expecting to be waited on hand and foot. But if you're the kind of shopper that knows what you want and need little customer service check out Royal Oak's trendy boutique, Incognito.

This store definitely has some unique clothing and the clothes are very reminiscent of Urban Outfitters/Lost and Found (in Royal Oak). They have a wide variety of clothes and shoes for men/women but this place definitely breaks the bank $$$$$$$
The only thing I've picked up from here have been from the sale rack and that still cost me a chuck. I would get much better deals @Urban Outfitters or Lost and Found (thrift) or Regeneration (thrift)

even though I live in Chicago and have amazing shoe store selections, I still wait to come home to Royal Oak to shoe shop (lower tax prices help too).  The shoes here are very Royal Oak, but once in a while they have some really amazing stuff.  Last year I bought a pair of boots by 80%20 that I've yet to find anywhere else and I get compliments every time I wear them.  The only reason I'm giving this a 4 instead of a 5 is because there really isn't any need for so many hooker shoes.  It doesn't seem like they're flying off the shelves.  In fact, some of those same shoes are there from the year previous.  Class it up, Incognito.  You've been around for years, no need to prove anything.

Incognito has been a favorite for a looong time. While most people go to get cool clothes, I am always checking out the shoe selection. Today I saw a really cute pair of gladiator sandals, but was disheartened with the price ($130). Definitely not worth it. Most of the items you get here can be bought for cheaper prices at other boutiques or mall stores, but it is still pretty cool. I remember one time I went to Incognito 6 years ago in a frenzy to find some shoes to wear that night, and of course I found the coolest heels.

Incognito has a wide-array of sunglasses if you ever want to follow the trend. If I didn't buy some sunglasses at another shop, I would have definitely perused this selection. They also have cute accessories for the females (fishnets, hats, jewelry, nail polish). Definitely check it out if you are in the area... even if you are just window shopping. :-)

I love this store... I love the shoes, the clothes, and the accessories!  I will say that some things are marked up way more than they are worth, BUT they have good sales.  I would shop there a lot less if I had to pay full price.  A lot of the items are unique and interesting, so it's not like only the boring stuff that no one wants will go on sale.

I definitely have purchased more shoes from this place than either clothes or accessories, but that doesn't mean there aren't always clothes I want.  I just find it easier to justify spending more money on shoes, plus they are much easier to try on (which is great for someone who hates shopping like me).

I would have to say my favorite thing about this place is that I wanted to get a Japanese themed shirt for a sake bomb party and I went there last minute and found a really really really cute Japanese shirt.

I have to say this place is way over priced for stuff you can find at a Army surplus store. I am speaking for the guys stuff. I have seen them selling t-shirts for double than what the t-shirt shop down the street was selling the same one for. You can go to Macy's or L&T and find the same Diesel or Gstar stuff for less.

Coming from NYC I have spent a lot on clothes, but I also know when to spend it. This place has crap for the money. I guess most men don't know any better around these parts, you can tell by what they where out. But really I have seen stuff you can get at a Army surplus store but for 3 times the price. If you are a guy don't shop here. Just because it is pricey does not make it good.

If you are going to spend this kind of money go to Caruso Caruso  in Bham and get good stuff, not cheap stuff sold for $$$.

This is one of my favorite stores to go to. It has the most unique brands out there. It is not your typical store that sells all the common things in Michigan. This is the store carries a lot of brands that is not found in Michigan but commonly found out in LA or NY. They have the trendy clothes. They also sell "Made in Detroit" items as well if you are a big Detroit fan.

I would say a person who shops at Amercrombie, American Eagle, GAP, would probably not buy anything here. I always like the accessoires that they have such as leather cuffs, necklaces, and sunglasses. They do carry premium jeans which I like as well. The shoes are great there since they are different as well.

If you are the type to dress unique and different from the rest of the crowd then this would be your store but if you are more of the common person you might not like this store since it is different. Who knows maybe there might be something that you may like.

Every once in awhile, I can be kind of a dick.
It's okay! I know it, I understand it, and after the fact I usually realize when it happens... and I'm big enough to say it when I was wrong (one example is my Detroit Threads review and update).
I had written a couple of nasty reviews about Incognito, I had a funny thing happen there with a misunderstanding about me being a thief and I have dogged it out in the past.
But there is a significant distinction to make about this place... It might not be my kind of place, but that doesn't mean it doesn't fill a void that certain people want filled. That's an interesting aspect of a user review, just because it's not my style, does it mean that it should get less stars?
I've learned that I should go to Incognito to buy my sunglasses... and that's it (although I lose a pair a month, so I go there every couple months in the summer). They do a good job w/ shades, and the girls who work there are always super cool about talking to me and suggesting different sunglasses and working through what I want. And I'm usually really happy with the pair that I buy.
But the environment isn't what I love and the music usually stinks... what to do with a place like this?
I took the crappy way out and went with the mediocre 3 stars. Call me a sellout... I can handle it.

this place is seriously overrated. i dunno if it's because it's been around for a while, because it's in royal oak or if no one here has experienced any better?
that can't be, hell there are other decent stores in the area, a few miles away and in the city/other burbs!

i occasionally see Ok clothes on the rack, but i have never bought anything because the prices are never justified. i will pay for something made really well, something classic or even something that may seem outrageous to others while i find it really unique and love it. never experienced that here.

some stuff just seems dated. other stuff is way trendy, but like a season or 3 behind.

a couple stars for selection. there is a lot in a small space.
minus a star for lack of service. i've been here a few times ready to try shoes on and no one had much time to acknowledge me {and it wasn't busy.} just didn't seem worth it to find someone to try shoes on.

i did see some men's shoes that were pretty cool. and they did have lacoste shoes for ladies, so a star for that!

overall i say stop in and see if there is anything worthwhile if you are already in the area.

Incognito is a cool store with cool clothes. You come here for a club outfit or an outfit for a special occasion. A couple of my friends and I have hosted 'theme parties' and several people have gotten their outfits here. They are overly priced on a lot of things but if you can not find what you are looking for at the mall then you are going to have to stop here. Check for things that are on sale and see if you can find anything.

I haven't visited Incognito in years. So I was definitely surprised to see the addition of the the accessories department. Pumps, sneaks, purses and accessories. They happen to be having a sale when I stopped in and they had some great items on sale. I like the sandals they carry not so much the pumps and the accessories were plenteous and cute! After I noticed the accessories I didn't pay too much attention to the clothes. If you're looking for a party heel this is definitely the place to start your search!

Absolutely LOVE Incognito.  You will not find anything in there that is not fantastic in a funky kind of way.  If you are looking for a dress or some shoes that no one else will be wearing, Incognito is your best bet.  They carry pieces that no one else in the Metro area carries.  Some items are a bit on the pricey side but there are some bargains to be had if you look.   My last purchase was a fantastic dress that I took to Vegas.  Up and down the strip people were asking me where I got it!
