For those of you who saw the event for Dirty Queer but were like "meh..."
It was awesome. It wasn't as dirty as one might think, it was funny and romantic as well.
Above all it was high energy for all walks of life, gay, lesbian, transgendered, straight- whatever, that's the point of this bookstore and the point of the poetry reading. It's just fun.
I recommend if you have never been.
I didn't make it out to the physical location of this bookstore, but they have an amazing selection and recommendations on the website. Also, they make me jealous I don't live in the area... they host a bunch of amazing women-friendly events!
It's a rare phenomenon when a bookstore opens its floodgates monthly to hundreds of queers eating snacks and listening to poetry about dirty dirty sex. (Will Yelp allow me to say "fisting" in a review?)
I understand this place is struggling financially. Though I have not spent much time shopping there, I knew from the moment I walked in that it is a place that deserves---no, NEEDS---to stay in business. Go help 'em out!
Can you say hell yeah! for a feminist bookstore that's sex positive (definitely not a given). Funniest spoken word/performance night in stumptown happens here every second Friday. Thanks be for this space opening its doors for dirty queers the city over to read their naughty bits and amuse and entertain. Come get your socks rocked amidst the racks of books - support this local business, expand your noodle, and get it saucy too.
Where else can you find a deal like that?
In Other Words is a women's bookstore and resource center, specializing in titles that address feminism, sexuality, gay-bi-trans issues and other assorted topics.
In addition to keeping the public informed with print media, In Other Words also hosts movies, art shows, lectures, book clubs, discussion groups, and more. In Other Words is a non-profit, too!
It's the last remaining not-for-profit feminist bookstore in the United States. I saw a post about it on Feministing and so when I visited Portland, I made sure to make a stop here. There was a great selection, with the sale that's going on right now enabling me to buy all I wanted from the shelves for well under $30. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere cozy. The events listed on the calendar on the wall impressed me and made me enviously wish I were a Portland resident. Big plus: their philosophy is sex-positive (whether that sex is straight or queer) and they have condoms in the bathroom.
What a wonderful space. Tons of books, magazines, diaries, events, and information. The staff is really friendly and helpful. I love the fact that is a non-profit.
I moved from Baltimore to Portland in hopes of finding a nicer, more progressive city, and In Other Words embodies what I wanted to find.
Wow - I just heard on the radio that "In Other Words" will be closing at the end of the year if they don't raise $11,000 (they are a non-profit). That would be a tragedy. Help them out if you can!
Microcosm has a small bookshelf of their stuff here. I can always get behind collectively run bookstores. Very comfy couches to sit on and evesdrop on the worker's conversations, which were pretty good. A great spread of zines and gifty items. They seem to have a pretty packed calendar of events and speakers. Like yoga. And other cool things. Great place, not pretentious or snobby or holier-than thou which is oh so possible with a place like this.
