Rowland Heights, CA
This review really isn't about the food, because every In-N-Out is awesome. Not to say that this one isn't awesome either, because it is.
No, we're talking about the strategically fantastic location of this In-N-Out. You know how the Barstow In-N-Out is one of the most popular because it's on the way to and from Vegas? Same difference.
Driving from SoCal to NorCal (or vice versa)...you're hungry, you're tired, you just want to get off the damn road...and you see nirvana. No, it's not a mirage, it's really an In-N-Out. Go get a Double-Double animal style, go get some animal fries, and get a shake to wash that down with. It makes that drive that much more bearable. -

Kettleman city, the halfway point from Bay Area to LA and back means perfect location for an in-n-out.
Long drives means I crave for in-n-out, so I was ecstatic around 9pm when I saw the in-n-out sign through the darkness.
Like all in-n-out locations, the burgers here still tasted amazing even though its in the middle of nowhere! -
Review from Lena K.
Mission Viejo, CA
Glad they're open late for late night travelers like myself. It was pretty quiet for a Friday night but they were still open and we were out the door within 5 minutes. My cousin and I did use the restroom first and the odor was unbreathable. It may just have been one customer causing this so I don't blame the restaurant.
We only ordered a vanilla milkshake but I must say, that vanilla milkshake kept me going for another 3 hours to San Jose! It was delicious. Best milkshakes I have tried have been from In-N-Out burger. -

Just like the other locations, the service is friendly and the food is good. But, this location's bathrooms exceed expectations b/c of volume of rest stops made here. There are more stalls than usual, clean floors, paper towels and a door that pushes out so you don't have to touch it. Woo hoo!

I would give In N Out a 5 but the lines are always so dang long and it takes quite a while to actually get your food.

Review from Rob P.
When it comes to fast food burgers, In-N-Out is the best of the best. It doesn't matter which location you go to, you know you are going to get a perfectly cooked delicious burger. This particular location is the one that I hit up whenever I drive up and down the I-5 between LA and San Francisco. It is a good midpoint to stop, fill up and grab a quick bite. My usual order is a Double-Double Animal Style with EXTRA CRISPY fries... the extra crispy is the secret. The normal fries are ok but they rise to another level when they have more of a crunch.
Service is always prompt here... even when the lines get a little long and the restaurant as a whole (including the bathrooms) is very clean. -
Review from Donald S.
This is the only In-n-Out located within a 20 mile radius of the halfway point of the drive between our place in NPB and my adorable granddaughter, TJ!
In-n-Out in Kettleman City keeps hope alive when it seems that the entire world is reduced to:
- Big rig convoys that are trying pass each other on hills (and slowing traffic to 20 miles per hour for everybody while doing so);
- The self appointed freeway speed monitors, driving below the posted speed limit in order to block those crazy drivers who may want to get somewhere at 75-80 mph;
- The completely oblivious drivers, speeding up as you go by, only to get in front of you and then slow down just as precipitously (new invention alert, Clifford..."cruise control"), changing lanes on a whim, just as you're about to go by them (never signaling the lane change...that would just make it too easy for other drivers), and;
- The unchanging and often desolate landscape that is the I-5 corridor.
So when the signs say "20 miles to Kettleman City", the Beautiful Carin and I always start singing one of our favorite songs!
No, not show tunes (not that I don't enjoy a good show tune...I do)...no, we start singing about the joy of getting a decent In-n-Out burger at Kettleman City...a song that I wrote all by myself!
I know you are asking yourself "Why does Donald only give four stars for this delightful oasis at the caravansary on the trade route between NPB and San Jose"?
"I know he loves In-n-Out...he constantly compares other burgers to In-n-Out".
"So, Why"?
Well, as some of the other Yelp correspondents have noted, the place (esp. the loo's) could be cleaner.
I know, that may be a lot to ask, given the sheer mass of human traffic (not to mention ovine and bovine traffic in this part of California) that wanders in past the crossed palms on a daily basis.
But I have come to expect the very best from In-n-Out over the years, both in terms of a terrific and well crafted burger for very little money, and in terms of not having the powerful aroma of urine and poop overwhelming me when I walk in (taking my appetite down a peg or two in the process).
I generally solve the problem by using the drive through at this location...but sometimes it's nice to get out of the car, stretch your legs and enjoy your double/double (mustard style), fries (well done) and Diet Coke (no amendments needed).
Maybe they should hire permanent restroom attendants for this location.
Still, in-n-Out and Ketteleman City are one of the bright spots in this particular drive and so for that, four shiny, orangey stars!Listed in: Meat Sweats!, The Hamburglar

Conveniently located off the freeway in Kettleman City. I think the design of this place is smart, they reduce traffic jams by making the entrance to the parking lot "harder" to get to. Even so, it is incredibly packed... but service is fast and as always, the food is delicious. Thanks In-N-Out, you made our trip home from Sacramento more bearable.

Review from Seth F.
Oakland, CA
The quality of the food at this In-N-Out is the same as you would expect at any In-N-Out location (awesome), but what makes this location unique is its location. There isn't another decent fast food restaurant along the 5 freeway for at least a hundred miles, and this one is strategically located at the halfway point between San Francisco and L.A. It makes for the perfect -- nay, mandatory -- rest stop on that trek.
The bathroom is also nicer than that of any of the official rest stops on the way, but be warned: during the lunch and dinner rushes, there can be a line to use the loo. Parking and seating is always ample even during the rushes though. -

There are just no better place to eat on the way between the SF to LA drive. You can't go wrong with some animal style burgers and fries.
Long lines but organized and clean. Just like any other In-N-Outs. -
Review from Alex R.
Los Angeles, CA
Like any In n Out the food is consistent and delicious. No complaints on that.
However, this location is filthy. Perhaps its because they experience a steady, practically nonstop stream of road-weary travelers, but almost every In n Out is usually busy.
Why the two stars? Flies. Everywhere. Inside, outside, hanging out underneath the tables. Nothing ruins an animal-style Double Double with grilled onions like a couple of flies buzzing around your legs and landing in your fries.
This location is like one big, dirty hobo. I may not be a health inspector but I'd easily grade this location a C or lower for cleanliness. It puts some Korean restaurants to shame. -

You've been driving 307.87 miles?
Why not have:
Hamburger with Onions: 390 calories
French Fries: 395 calories
Chocolate Shakes: 590 calories
Oh, I'm on a diet, Diet Coke: 0 calories.
Yummm.
That should sit well. I have 166.6 (the devil's number?) miles to go.
Oh...BTW, if you're traveling North of here, eat before the 33 Exit, those yellow highway signs that say "High Wind Warning", should say "10,000 Cattle Breaking Wind in the Dark Warning". Peeeuuew! Hold your nose. -
Review from Tiff C.
Just like the name, you go in & out.
Typical in&out... just like any regular fast food chain off the side of I-5... but we opted for something better than a Micky D's...
This place was PACKED! it was really hard scoping out for a booth ... or any seats.. but we got lucky and had one in the corner away from the massive amounts of people waiting for their number to get called on.
It took a while for our food to be ready, but I can't complain because there were hella people ordering.
Burgers are good, fries are good, location is clean.. exactly what we needed after driving for hours. -

BEST ROAD TRIP STOP EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lots of bathrooms!
IT IS CROWDED with lots of different people, who are actually pretty social, I even ran into another Fullertonian on his way to Seattle, that was pretty random. lol. Anyway yea, In N Out's awesome food of course, and it was pretty clean, and well, great place. :D
I ALWAYS stop when i go to Northern California, and you should do the same! THE STAFF HERE works VERY hard to provide great service, so please be nice to them. :)

Everything you need.

Eaten here more times than I can remember now. I know every boring pothole of the 5 freeway now, from one stinky cow farm to another.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Came by for lunch as this is the only reliable place to stop on the way to LA! Upon arrival, the line was out the door.
The restrooms were relatively clean and the employees were friendly. The line to the cashier moved swiftly.
The wait for food was ~15-20 minutes. My bun wasn't as spongy as it usually is. ...the fries were super tasty when hot, for the first couple of minutes...
...despite the hoards of people, I would classify this joint as organized chaos! :D -

Best rest stop/meal on the way to SF from LA.
Saved a few hungry grad students on the way up to a conference in Berkeley and on the way down to SoCal. Also stopped here on a family vacay to SF too. Kettleman In-N-Out FTW. It can get quite crazy on Fridays and Sundays though. A group of us had to mad dash out of the car to beat a traveling boys' high school soccer team to the line. When they saw us running, the team started running to beat us. That is what In-N-Out can do to you. Ignore the McDonald's and go straight here for the real stuff... unless the McRib happens to be back. Then you are excused.
Eat here. In-N-Out tastes better when you are on the road. -
Review from Amy S.
No trip back to the Bay is complete without a cheeseburger from In-N-Out. This time home, I fulfilled my quota at the Kettleman City location. Located right off of the I-5 seemingly in the middle of nowhere, this In-N-Out is the perfect pit stop for those making the drive between the Bay Area and LA because it's roughly the halfway point. Besides the delicious burgers, fries, and shakes that are expected with the In-N-Out brand, this location also has a friendly staff and clean restrooms.
#2 (cheeseburger, fries, and soft drink) animal style! For those that aren't in the know, "animal style" is the most famous of the not-so-secret "secret menu" variations. It's the burger plus pickles, special sauce, and grilled onions. YUM! http://www.yelp.com/bi... Fries can also be ordered animal style (with melted cheese, special sauce, and grilled onions), but I like my In-N-Out fries how they prep them normally: freshly made to order and not greasy at all. http://www.yelp.com/bi...Listed in: California Dreamin'

This In-N-Out is our pit stop between northern and southern Cali. A #2 animal style with a neapolitan shake and I'm ready to continue on the road. Wifey is happy with her #3, well done animal style fries and a pink lemonade.
My wife really likes this In-N-Out because staff does a tremendous job of keeping the restrooms clean and they have plenty of stalls. Staff is happy and upbeat despite the mob of people that stop here. The number of people they serve and turn around is amazing. Keep up the good work! -

In-N-Out holds a special place in my heart for all of the late night college study sessions I had at a San Diego location. Odd choice, I know, but those milkshakes!
Now that I don't eat meat, I will still stop by for their delicious shakes and ask for a grilled cheese off the secret menu but this review is for the bathrooms. And, as they do in almost every category, In-N-Out has nailed it with simplicity. Tons of stalls, clean, a changing table and all paper products present and accounted for. A 5 star experience if I do say so myself! -

Does this really need a long review? No.
Love the food, love the location.... hate the long lines!!!! To those unfamiliar, the menu is simple with 3 meals, usual beverages, and milkshakes.
The people in line are the reason why In N Out doesn't really need an elaborate review from me. We all love the place because we like to eat there!
I've had vegetarians tell me they'll go to In N Out just for the fries or it's the only fast food they would go to, if ever. That sounds like a good thing to me. -

In-N-Out is on my list of favorite burger joints, however, today's burger was extra salty. There were "too many cooks in the kitchen". I lalmost sent it back. At the time that I ordered, they were not really busy yet.

We were on our way to LA from San Jose and decided to stop here to grab a quick dinner..
Wow.. Never seen an In n Out this empty! For once I did not have to spend 20 min waiting for my food and it was just as good if not better then the place near my house -

Loooove the bathrooms here.
Adore the constant lines and beckoning smells of oil and 'tates.
And of course, the food. Always hits the spot on a long drive, ya know?
Bah-gers and fries, animal style. -

It's In and Out. How else are you going to rate the mecca of all so cal students driving up north to the bay and nor cal students driving down south for their family. This is one of the pivotal moments on highway 5. I bet you no one would even know Kettlemen city existed if it wasn't for In and Out. In and Out put this town on the map.
And If you can spare a few doubloons then head to harris ranch otherwise, I'd make a ten minute stop to use the restroom, grab some gas and order myself a double double, extra lettuce, no tomato, no onion for the road. -
Review from Sean B.
It's a thick, greasy burger... so as a self-respecting gay man I should avoid it the same way I avoid sex with women and truck stop cologne... but I can't help myself. They're awesome, and when you're driving from SF to LA it's the only thing to look forward to. Probably gonna get one of the bastards on my way home tomorrow too.

We passed through here on our way back home to the Bay. It was really busy and the line was out the door when we arrived, but it moved really fast. We didn't have to wait very long for our food, especially considering how packed the place was.
There is plenty of seating outside if it's too full inside.
It could have been a little cleaner, but overall, it was efficient and got us on our way with a good meal in our tummies :D -

For REVIEW 400 I present to you...
My first In-N-Out... ever.
Over a decade ago, before In-N-Outs were ubiquitous in Northern California, this In-N-Out was a regular stop in my high school choir's annual tour of Southern California. It was here that I first learned the ins and out of In-N-Out and by the time the In-N-Out opened at Union Landing, I was already well acquainted the secret menu.
This place deserves five stars not just for the sake of nostalgia. Kettleman City is a logical place to stop on a trip between LA and the Bay Area, I think it is the closest to the actual half way point. Gas stations are a plenty.
In addition to this being my first In-N-Out, this place is a very well run place. Recently I stopped here on the way down the LA and the line was out the door... and it was in the mid 90's. Somebody was handing out cups of cold water in the line. After the order was taken, I was resigned to wait a long time for my food, that was not the case.
In-N-Out is good enough already... the people who work here take it to another level. -

I just had the best authentic tacos ever at a Kettleman City Taco truck right off Interstate 5!
On 9-9-11 I was bombing up I 5.
I needed gas,food and a cold beer.
There is of course the super popular In and Out burger in KC,But I was kinda burgered out after eating at the most excellent Foster Freeze twice in Carpeteria a few days earlier.
Plus I saw no "Quicky Marts" right off the freeway that sold beer?
So I decided to drive the 3/4 of a mile drive toward Kettleman city.
I struck gold!
Not only was the gas nearly 50¢ a gallon cheaper than the stations right off the exit but the Gas Mart sold super cold beers at nice prices.
As I drank my icy cold beer in the 90 degree weather I saw a lone taco truck in the empty dirt lot across the street.
I like tacos and regularly go on Taco truck crawls in Oakland and San Francisco.
I ordered 4 tacos from the really nice and cute perfect english speaking girl,I think her Dad is the owner.
She said everything was good...no truer words were ever spoken.
I ordered a Pollo,Cabeza,Carnitas and a Birra taco.
They came on a paper plate at $1.25 each.(they also have a 3 taco with rice and beans special for $5)
Each taco was surprisingly distinct in flavor from the other and they all were not just great but absolutely fantastic!!
I also got a Carne Asada Torta to go that was good but not jaw dropping perfection like the tacos.
The name of the truck is "Tacos El Grullense" straight down the main road less than a mile past the fast food joints on the left.
They serve Tacos,Burritos,Tortas and Quesadillas.
Meats available are Asado,Pastor Lengua,Cabeza,Pollo Barbacoa,Tripas and Carnitas
Forget the fast foods joints and try El Grullense taco truck in Kettleman City right off I5.
I would love to hear other travelers opinion of their tacos. -

Growing-up n SoCal, I know In-N-Out very well. It's great they opened two locations on the 5FWY between SoCal and NoCal...those are my designated pit stops. Like all In-N-Outs, this place is clean, friendly and has great food.

Alright, here's the deal. In-N-Out always offers delicious, high-quality food. I will never contest that. And this location is a perfect halfway point between SoCal and the Bay Area. It's the only In-N-Out on the 5 through the Central Valley.
The problem? This place is NUTS. The floorplan is the pretty typical In-N-Out one nowadays, but the demand for seats is just absurd. They could double the size of the dining room and still not have enough seats for all the people. Never in my life have I seen people standing, holding their trays, and eating their food like I have at this location. Vying for a table is like trying to get the most coveted kids gift during Christmas.
So bear that in mind. I love the place to death, but if you don't want to deal with sheer insanity and wanton fire code violations, there's probably a Carl's Jr. around the corner.
