In and Up Pilates has changed my body and my attitude about exercise. It still is the longest hour of the day, but I will never stop doing it, because I now wear the size 2 and 4 I've only dreamed about my entire life. Dara is my favorite instructor, but in a pinch all of them are really knowledgeable. The thing that really makes it for me is that the class is never the same, so no way you can be bored.

I started coming to In & Up Pilates about two years ago after a back injury. I'm not one to gush about anything, but I can't help it -- this place has really changed my life. I was an absolute beginner when I started, but doing Pilates 2-3 times a week has gotten my back pain under control, and I'm more fit and strong than I've ever been. Pilates is an amazing workout, both challenging and interesting. You really have to think about what you're doing, and the body awareness and core strength carries over into other exercise and activities. Thanks to Pilates, I get more out of my workouts at the gym, and I'm a better skier.
There are a lot of Pilates studios, and what sets this one apart is the quality of instruction. The teachers (I take private lessons and equipment classes with Dara, Stephanie, and Ana) are all trained classical Pilates instructors, and they're very knowledgeable. They really tailor the workout to your needs and your fitness level (even in group classes, the groups are small so you get a lot of individual attention). You'll work hard and you'll understand your body better. You'll also have a good time! The studio's small, so you get to know the teachers and other students, which means that an intense workout is also really enjoyable. The equipment is clean and well maintained, and the studio has every major Pilates apparatus so you have everything you need for a workout at any level.
One of the great things about Pilates is that you never really learn everything; you can always progress to new exercises and variations. Pilates has become a part of my life and I look forward to progressing at In & Up Pilates. -

I went here after reading good reviews on Yelp. Hmmm.....
First, the parking sucks. I went to an evening class so the streets were PACKED and it was metered... I had to park quite far. There's a lot next to the studio, but you're not allowed to park there :( (Also, when I called to ask where to park, no one answered...)
I walk in and there's no one there. I enter the first room and it's dark and no one's there either (it's like 10 minutes to start of class). A lady (another client) walks in so I ask her where to go, she leads me to the back room. I peek my head in and a lady at a computer sits. Ummm.... it's the pilates room, which can BARELY fit 5 large mats and the office is in the same room?? Oh, there's a curtain to separate it lol. There's a bookcase with random junk, some equipment thrown into the corner, a rusty old ladder (but someone tried to cover it with a pretty blanket), and you're also supposed to put your coat, purse, etc. on the floor...somewhere, wherever...
Only 3 people attended the class and as far as the method, I know nothing of pilates methods, but I know this class wasn't fun or interesting, it was probably the most boring class I've attended. I WILL SAY though, it was FREE for your 1st intro class which was a plus.
As far as the teacher-- Cheryl, she was super nice and helped me when she saw I needed help, and catered to my injuries and "newness." But she didn't seem as educated about the anatomy of the human body as other teachers are that I've experienced. Meh.
I wouldn't go here again though, because I like to work out in a peaceful environment (no music, no a/c, kinda dirty, and too much clutter/junk laying around). I also didn't get the excruciating burn the next day :(
EDIT:
I hate when the owner actually replies to people's opinions... it makes them seem like they aren't confident enough to take a hit. And I wasn't lying about one thing! I like how she didn't say a thing to backup my comments on the parking, the fact that no one answered the phone, the fact that no one was there to greet me or show me where to go, the fact that it was dirty, the ladder in the tiny work room (generous enough for 3 people? that's pretty tiny.) she claims there's supposed to be no music to free the mind, etc. so why is the computer office, the bookcase, people's personal items, and a ladder cluttering a tiny room for 3 mats? that's not freein' my mind.Comment from Stephanie H. of In & Up Pilates 11/12/2010

I have been going to In and Up Pilates for about six months now, and I love going, which says a lot when it comes to me and exercise. Don't get me wrong - I don't think I'm lazy - but with a bum knee and very flat feet, it's difficult to find a workout that is both a challenge but doesn't end up causing me excruciating pain. (See flat feet above).
I started out with a series of private sessions with Stephanie, the owner, and then went on to group equipment classes which have made me stronger, leaner, happier, and able to sleep better (no lower back pain which is often a given with flat feet!) in a mere six months. I think this must have to do with their very classical approach. I've been to other "Pilates" studios in the past (that shall remain nameless) which have deviated from the classical method, and while I walked away sweaty and wild-eyed, there was no real change in my body. I read another review in which the reviewer was bummed that she didn't get a "excruciating burn" out of her beginner mat class at In and Up Pilates, and I can only assume that she didn't care to learn the classical method. Personally, I love how my group classes sneak up on me -- at the beginning of class, I think "aahhh, this is so nice and stretchy and easy" but by the end of class I think "Jeez, I really don't think these core muscles have anything left to give. . . how the heck did that happen?" One of my teachers, Christina, explained to me that a classical Pilates session involves a series of small exercises, layer by layer, so by the end you've had a total body workout. It's a peaceful way to work out, which is probably why I keep going back. Whereas I don't go back to the scary spin studio where I still have a series. . . . lots of shouting, lots of bad music, lots of chrome.
But here is the best testament to classical Pilates as taught by this studio. Right around the same time I started going, I met a boy and we started eating and drinking together like Armegeddon was right around the corner. I was roasting chickens dripping in butter, buying wine by the caseload at Costco, ordering pizzas, marinating flank steak, going to Umami burger and drinking pints of cider and eating truffle cheese fries. So yeah - surprise, surprise - I gained some weight. But here's the amazing thing: I had NO idea I had gained any weight because my clothes still fit. My theory is that the Pilates sessions basically sucked everything in (new layer of fat and all), and gave me a waist. It's a great bonus to not have to buy a whole new work wardrobe in a situation like this. Now I'm on Weight Watchers again (oh, joy) and I can't wait to see how Pilates + not shoveling food and drink down my throat turns out.
The other reason I love In and Up Pilates is its cozy neighborhood feeling. It kind of reminds me of the ballet studios I used to go to as a kid - family owned, well-worn. I've read some reviews on here in which people were dismayed at what appears to be the casual nature of the place. Equipment stored in the same room in which classes go on was one major complaint in some reviews, and there was also some complaints that no one was in the first entry room when they walked in for their first class. Listen, if you can't manage to walk into a back room to find your teacher, or wait in the front until someone comes out to greet a new client, you might have bigger problems that Pilates will not be able to fix.
Is this place sleek and antiseptic? No. Instead, you have a nice little community concerned about your health - there are both a massage therapist and an acupuncturist who work out of the same space. And I experienced the beauty of going to a nice little neighborhood studio yesterday, when Stephanie the owner, whom I've gotten to know, very graciously accommodated my schedule after a very wacky morning. Try that at one of those corporate-run, impersonal studios and I bet you'll come away frustrated.
I love the place and am grateful I found it. -

Just took a Sunday morning class with Liam for the first time at In & Up.
I enjoyed the class and found Liam to be warm, helpful and knowledgeable. He was good at making sure everyone understood what they were doing. It was a large group (7) for the room but he made it work. The complimentary water is a plus! -

I was reluctant to leave my West Hollywood pilates studio but after a long day at the office, the last thing i want to do is fight traffic to West Hollywood and back. Based on Eli B.'s review, I decided to give In & Up a shot. I'm so glad I did. In & Up kicks that other place's butt.
I've been going to In & Up for about 6 months now and it's a wonderful place. They know their stuff. I take classes with Dara and Stephanie, the owner. I adore them both. But I've seen most of the other teachers in action as well and they're all first rate. They know an incredible range of exercises and techniques so I never get bored -- and they always make sure I'm doing everything correctly. Every time I see them, I improve what I know and learn something new.
NB. They're particularly good at working with injured people and folks of different experience levels. My mother and I take duets together -- she's a beginner and I'm not -- and they always manage to challenge me while they teach her the fundamentals. -

I'm a Pilates fanatic- nothing like it to change your bod and keep you flexible, and if you mix it up with yoga you just might be serene as well. I'm also very picky about my Pilates, have had great and terrible instructors, and have instructor training myself.
In and Up is just great. They're friendly, very competent, and push you hard (necessary- Pilates is not easy and it takes focus to get results). They're not cheap, but they are very good, and those $50 Pilates sessions aren't worth it if they do nothing, now are they?
In and Up is moving to Hyperion which takes them out of my drive to work and probably means I won't continue going- but I highly recommend. -

There's a difference in Pilates studios, and it isn't just location or the personality of the instructors. In & Up teaches classical Pilates - instructing clients in the discipline as Joseph Pilates would have.
Why is that important? On a physical level, you're not really learning - or getting - what you need to out of Pilates unless you do it the right way. Other instructors improvise, invent, and change the routines, often without understanding why they should be taught as they are. The classical body of knowledge is now nearly a century old, and the time-tested nature of it shows.
In addition, classical instructors generally receive many more hours of training than non-classical instructors - and are required to do continuing education in order to maintain their certification. That makes a big difference in quality, as well as your own safety.
Classical Pilates is both the kind of work you should do if you're looking to get healthier, rehab, or just have fun. It is also the form of Pilates one ought to embrace if searching for a true discipline and art, rather than just another workout routine that you'll ultimately tire of. -

I just finished In & Up's 30 classes in 30 days challenge. As someone who didn't like to exercise (and only runs when being chased!) I can honestly say I'm hooked. This studio has changed my life. I'm stronger, leaner, and less-stressed. I can't say that I had what Pilates called a "total body transformation," but I can say that I'm on my way. Go for it!

Loving the truly classical approach at In & Up. I landed a great place for my first foray into Pilates and am getting so much stronger--less back pain, more muscles in places I didn't even know I had any.
Stephanie has been my teacher and she's got chops in both the teaching and inspiring departments.
A safe, comfortable, supportive place to get strong and in shape. -

Tried to make an appointment for a duet, & went there during the appointment time and there was a class going on. Tried to call, no answer. Then I got a call back 40 minutes later. Bad communication.

My wife introduced me to pilates after she suffered some serious back issues.... I was skeptical but after I saw her incredible improvement, I was sold. I started going to pilates with her at in & up and LOVED it.... i like to work out hard but my wife takes it a little more easy, and the instructors were able to work both our styles in during our doubles work out. And even when we do a group session they tailor it to each of us.... i'm pretty impressed. professional and on time with appts....

I can't believe it's taken me this long to write a review of this place, particularly since I've only had the greatest things to say since I started going as soon as I moved to LA, over a year ago.
I've taken Pilates since 2005 (sprained ankle), and was lucky to get quality instruction from classically-trained instructors from the start. However, this studio and its teachers have taken the notion of "classically-trained" to a whole new level, imparting the inspiration that comes with a growing awareness of and connection to one's body movement potential. Also? They're all incredibly fun. Stephanie, the owner, has created an environment wherein the classes and private instruction alike are all enjoyable, challenging, and highly productive times. I can't recommend this place enough. Enjoy your time there. -

I have gone to several Pilates studios in the area over the last several years and this is by far the best. But if you like to chat with your teacher and classmates In and Up is not the place for you, they take their Pilates very seriously.
