Bring your giggle goggles, because this shit is nanners. B-A-N-A-NERS.
Improv Asylum is located below street level in a blackbox theater with a very casual setup. There is a bar when you first walk in with beer and wine, and the lobby opens up to the theater. There was seating for maybe 80 people and everyone there was having a great time. All of the actors had their A-game faces on.
We went to a 4pm Saturday show, and apparently that ticket will also get you into that day's midnight show which is considered "raunchy" (their words). I didn't get a chance to do that, but I'd like to come back with more friends to check it out. I'm sure its just like their day show, except with far more penis jokes. -
Review from Ashley H.
Went here looking for something different to do. The theater is "intimate" which is great because no matter where you sit you can see and hear everything.
The show was great, only a few awkward skits, far outweighed by the funny ones. These people are really talented, taking suggestions from the audience and immediately turning them into comedy. Loved the glitter bombing!
They serve beer and wine (good thing I brought my flask!) and pop. You can also but a bucket of beer, good because there aren't waitresses or anything coming around.
Overall, it was a killer time and something I would do again. -

I highly recommend going here. It's a great low-key kind of a show to check out.
I had always been curious about this place, having passed it on the street a million times. The different improv/sketch comedy you see here varies, but we had a great time here last weekend.
You walk downstairs into what looks like a little bar - which it is, really. There are restrooms to the right and a small bar across the room. You can wait here before your show starts. And YES you can take your drink with you into the other room to drink during the show! We thought that was great. We saw a group called "Life before Sext" - I think - I don't remember. But they were pretty good. They take audience suggestions for ideas, put on little bits, maybe sing a song or two. It was entertaining for sure. We loved it.
--
My seat was "obstructed" which I knew when buying it. It kinda sucked: the stage is a square surrounded on all sides by rows of seating about 6 rows deep. This stage has a post at each corner, which isn't that big, but if a majority of their bits involve them sitting at two of these corners, and you're seated just-so that they line up in front of you behind a pole, well, you lose out. BUT they do move around a lot and we still had a fine time. It was funny and worth the money.
--
I don't mind paying full price here, because they need it. I have a brother who does this out in Hollywood, and they make little to no money doing these shows. It's mainly for exposure and experience. I recommend going here and we will be back! -

Went on a date on a Saturday night I think and had a great time. It was a mix of skits and improv, both were funny. The crew was really funny and you could tell they were enjoying themselves, which is important. There were some less than really funny moments, but the really funny moments definitely outweighed and made up for those. Good price, bucket of beers, and just great fun.

This place was great. The atmosphere is simple and yet so fun. I love the way the stage is surrounded by seats, and no matter where you sit you are right up on the action. I had been to this place a few years ago and was not overly impressed, but I took my fiance for her birthday and was blown away this time around (I guess that's the chance you take with improv).
The cast is just so good, and great at getting people involved. I'm generally hard to please when it comes to comedy, yet found myself laughing consistently throughout the show.
One last tip: I was told my seat was $5 off because it was "obstructed view," so I was a bit skeptical upon arrival....Now I think I will REQUEST obstructed view each time and save myself the $5 (or at least spend it on beer). I could see everything and was completely satisfied with my seat.
Hit up Mike's afterwards for a truly fun night. -

Usually when you ask someone if they want to go to an improv/comedy show, you're met with a *groan* not really. Improv Asylum is completely different I love this place. I have gone several times with different people and it's always been a good show. After the first time I went I told a bunch of my friends and they went to a show too. IA also has a fantastic location being in the North End, so you can get dinner before the show, or if you want to go to a bar there are plenty to choose from since Faneuil Hall is a short walk away. For a great night full a laughs definitely come here you won't be sorry

They have reignited my love for watching improv. After many hours of bad Seattle improv I was nervous when told that this was one of our stops whilst we were in Boston. One gets jaded when they pay $20 to watch a 2 hour show revolving only around mouse traps.
This is definitely not the case for Improv Asylum. They keep things fresh by doing a fun mixture of improv and rehearsed skits. I was left so impressed with their main stage cast that I demanded we come back to see their NXT act that same weekend. Although their NXT act is considered up and coming, they still easily beat any of the Seattle improv.
Realistically, any night you go to Improv Asylum will guarantee you non-stop laughter.Listed in: Lost in Boston

Improv Asylum is an awesome date location. I had my second trip to Improv Asylum on New Year's Eve and it was another laugh out loud event with an entertaining cast and tasty cheap beer. The cast has a good time getting the crowd involved and making them part of the improv. Also, I appreciate that the staff at Improv Asylum runs a tight ship. The shows start right on time and they don't let late arrivals just walk in a disturb the show. I recommend booking your tickets a few days (maybe a week) in advance to make sure you get some good seats. Definitely a fun time!

This was a blast. If the actors ask if there are any single guys in the audience, don't yell out or you will be forced to embarrass yourself. HA

Went on a class showcase night (Tuesday I believe). You get your moneys worth (pretty inexpensive).
I laughed out loud a few times and generally enjoyed the performance. There were some big lulls though. Also, the bar (open during intermissions) was exceptionally slow. -

Best entertainment!
These folks are amazing! My son surprised me and reserved seats for our family of 6 and half way through the night I was called out of the audience by name. My son arranged ahead of time for my 50th birthday. They interviewed me in front of the audience about how I met my husband and how he proposed to me. It was a cute, warm and funny story. I had no idea when they were finished that they were going to recreate my story in a matter of seconds - no rehearsing. The humor they added and the hysterical quick wit was captured on a DVD that we watch over and over! We have returned several times!! The Improv talent is amazing - a different show every time we go! -

Instead of just another night at a bar or lounge, I really wanted some fun entertainment for the night, yelped comedy club and decided to go to the RAUNCH show this past Saturday. IT WAS F-ING HILARIOUS!!! Granted, my friend and I were 4-5 drinks in deep, but we were thoroughly entertained and laughing the entire hour. And bonus points for the bar serving Prosecco! I would totally go back again, with more friends in tow.

Went to a show Sat night and it was a fun night . Great live skit show that is funny and affordable. Crew is very talented. Show is geared to adults so do not bring children. Only gave it 4 stars rather than 5 because the show is held in the basement and the seating is very tight (North End location). Overall great show and talented crew that will have you laughing all night.

We went as part of a bachelorette party and I'll admit that I wasn't quite sure what to expect at an improv place...but it turns out that I didn't need to worry since this place was hilarious!
Like others have mentioned, they'll ask questions of the audience and make up skits based off that, which turned out to be pretty funny! -

This place was awesome. It is a good after dinner date spot.
The only downside is the beers cost $5 for a bottle and $6 for a draft. They have about 5 different ones to choose from. It can get a little pricey if you grab a few before during and after the show.
I'd suggest drinking before hand. The 1st set is 1 hour then 15 min break. Followed by 30 mins more at the end.
The people doing it are absolutely hilarious. I am a tough judge when it comes to comedy but I was laughing all night. -
Review from Mandy A.
Such a good decision for our first night in Boston... we saw the Life Before Sext show on a Saturday night and it was amazing. I am always hesitant about improv and comedy... I feel like going into a place expecting it to be hilarious is always too high of an expectation and I'm left disappointed. I was in tears from beginning to end, the actors were great and so quick witted, I loved it.

Let me start of by saying the venue is great--there's a bar for before the show or during intermission, the stage setup is great for the show, the bathrooms were clean, and the staff were very friendly.
I went with three friends and we had a great time. The reason I give it three stars is it was just not my kind of comedy. I had a few genuine laughs but mostly I felt like I was laughing because my friends were having such a great time--they loved it. I really was excited to go but it was kind of a letdown.
I would definitely recommend it, though. It just wasn't my cup of tea--that's all. -

If you go to an Improve Asylum show and don't laugh, you must not have a pulse.
I've enjoyed every show I've attended, including their awesome No Rest for the Wicked Funny 24 hour comedy show to benefit Globe Santa.
If you go to a show with a group you can pre-arrange to have you group mentioned in a sketch. This was fun during a college alumni trip to Improv Asylum. -
Review from Lorrie M.
This show was pretty hilarious and I'm so happy I had the chance to go. Unfortunate that I wasn't able to stay until the very end due to a late dinner reservation at L'Espalier but it was just hysterical as someone had mentioned.
This is basically like comedy sportz, they play a lot of improv games and ask the audience for suggestions for the improv they are doing. The cast is very passionate about what they do and are very lively hence putting on a great show. The bar outside is not bad and it's not too crowded on a night basis so you won't find yourself waiting in enormous lines for the bathroom or the bar.
The seating is VERY intimate which I love and they have a lot of audience involvement which makes it more fun than if you were to just stalely sit there and watch someone else have all the fun.
This is totally worth your money! -

Boston definitely has no shortage of bars, and for that reason it also has no shortage of drunken creepers that frequent them. Sometimes I can stomach that, but for nights when I want an excellent night on the town without the typical Boston scene, Improv is my go-to.
I like coming here because it's different every time. And it gets the audience vey involved which is nice. It's been consistently funny everytime I've been except once. It was a Wednesday night, they were trying something new, it was a miss for me. But for the most part, it is painfully, pants-wettingly hilarious.
They have obviously built up a strong cast, and I'll be back many times. -

I went to the 8pm show last Friday night as a guest with my good friend's bachelorette party and had an awesome time. The cast was fantastic, we had amazing seats and I died laughing at "It's Glitter!".
However, another woman who was in our party had an awful time due to some pretty lacking customer service. Before the show, she tried to get a beer at the bar located right outside the performance space. The bartender, whom I had no direct issue, gave attitude about my friend's unusual ID. It's a New York State license with a Boston address. Granted, yes that's a bit odd. But is that enough for the server to scoff at my friend? No. McLovin' wasn't getting a drink, a 24 year old woman was.
So, whatever. She didn't buy one (even though technically, she was never refused service or told by the server that her ID was inadequate. Just given buckets of 'tude), but then, at intermission, another girl in the group bought a round for a few of us, including my friend. She said her ID wasn't accepted, but honestly we didn't think anything of it because we know it's valid. She's had this ID for at least a year.
Halfway through the second part of the show, the theater manager, Pablo, shone a flashlight directly into her face and pulled her out of the theater. She was not allowed reentry.
The show ends and we all leave the theater to see my friend crying on the sidewalk because Pablo has confiscated her license and told her that if she wanted it back, she needed to call the proper authorities.
Really, guy? I mean, come on. I work in a theater on the house staff and as a server for the bar in the theater and I understand taking precautions. I've seen fake IDs and pulled them when given lip. That's not an issue. What's an issue was how rude this manager was to my friend. She asked for a phone number to call the police (instead of 911, obviously) and he told her he wouldn't help her. And, when another group member asked to see the paperwork that says he's allowed to confiscate IDs or licenses he sees unfit, he refused.
The police officer came, Pablo ignored my still crying friend, gave the ID to the cop, schmoozed with him for a moment and told us to enjoy our evening. No apology to pulling her out of the show, no apology for embarrassing her and no apology for being a general ass to her.
The cop immediately gave the ID to my friend and said "While it's unusual, it's not illegal."
....Aside from Pablo, it really was a great show. I'm just sorry it ended so sourly.Comment from Chet H. of Improv Asylum 9/2/2010

I just went to the recent Mainstage show, entitled "Leave it to Bieber."
All I have to say is, I DARE the Improv Asylum to NOT be funny at least once in my lifetime. I triple-dog dare them. If they follow through with this, I'll STILL laugh, because the thought of the comics doing everything in their power to not be funny would be outrageous.
There will always be 2 or 3 people who manage to squeak in a couple funerals or saunter by a train wreck the same day they decide to go to IA, just so they can say,"MWEHHHHHH. IT'S NOT THAT FUNNEEEEEE. I DONT NO WUT THE HYYYYPE IIIISSSSS. I HATE CHILDREN AND RABBITS."
You know who I'm talking about. Just laugh at them as hard as you do at the show.1 Previous Review: Show all »

This was easily the best improv I've ever seen, including Upright Citizens' Brigade in New York. Very clever blend of sketches and improv. I went with a bachelorette party. There were easily 5 other parties there, but it was fun. They made up a skit based on one of the brides' story of how she met her fiance. It was hysterical, and she was a good sport to share these details with so many strangers!
Would definitely go again. Went to a Saturday night show, great laughs all around. -

You must go here! This is the type of place that can still make you bust a gut laughing, even on the heels of a fight (or "disagreement") with your boyfriend while waiting in line outside to get in. Now THAT'S funny! Highly recommend.

I had a truly epic and excellent experience here last night. Our office, for my going away party, got to enjoy two hours at Improv Asylum last night. We had a reception, followed by a private show. Not only did the actors bring us to tears of delight, they catered the show to all our hilarious antics, employees, situations and made the show 100% about our crazy office. We were treated with great care and made sure to leave with a smile on our face.
It was the best party I could ever ask for.Listed in: Ooooh, Boston You're My Home!

2 stars to you, and I'm being fucking generous!
I went in on a Thursday night as a group of 9.
There was complimentary pasta from Lucca, and though I gobbled it up, it sure tasted complementary.
Waiting until the 8pm show, I paid $8 for chardonnay and pranced around the empty main floor. The location is great, right near the end of Hanover, a quick 5-minute walk from the Haymarket T stop, but the crowd was definitely a no-no.
Perhaps being in my 20's and going to an early show on a Thursday night might have triggered this, but I immediately acquired an onset of "ew, get me out, I'm too young for this" symptoms. I began itching as the 50+ year-old men staring into my breasts, peeling off my tight dress with their sleasiness, and I started coughing ridiculously as the middle-aged women layered perfume over and over again first on their necks to their backs and legs (repeat 3x for "extra" effect). yuck!
As we quickly entered the main stage room, I realized that there was no assigned seating, contrary to the ticket stubs. Instead, I got shafted to sit in the very back because some Insurance-selling bozos reserved the first 3 rows for themselves, as they came in 2 minutes before the show started. What nerve! What frustrated even more were the bookclub ladies, who, honest to God, were probably bad-smelling old farts who couldn't get a lay if they wanted to. With their beers in hand, they were shouting out disturbing book titles when the improvisors asked them, "What things make you mad?" and I just silently leaned back in my chair and DIED.
Comedy?
More like a fucking Tragedy.
Throughout the night, perhaps only 4 out of our 9 were even laughing, and some even commented that I would do a better job of "improvising" than half of them on the stage, no offense. And you know jokes are bad when you have to curse a million times to make the crowd roar with laughter. Trust me, been there, done that.
Jokes are definitely catered to the older, Boston crowd, so those in your 20's, beware. The only part I mustered a chuckle was when they performed their sketch: "Chocolate donut" act which they perform religiously (according to my friends), and commented on how "black people like chocolate donuts 'cause they're the same color as the donut"
...seriously?Comment from Chet H. of Improv Asylum 8/3/2010

This quaint little spot seems to be quite a hidden gym among all of the restaurants and bars of the surrounding neighborhood.
The tickets are reasonably priced, the booze is damn near free for Boston, and the shows are hilarious.
Improv Asylum is great for small and large groups. Bring a date, bring a friend, but don't bring your kids! hahahaha
Incredible venue. Definitely recommend. -

I flew in from LA to visit my best friend and we went to this place on Saturday night. It was such a blast!!! We went to the 10pm show for $25 and were lucky to be able to attend the 12midnight 'Raunch' show for free. The quality of the cast is excellent and I think it would be a great thing to take your friends to. I was laughing pretty much the whole time!

Always a wonderful time, and a great way to create a memorable evening in the North End. I've taken classes there too where I learned a lot, laughed a great deal, and made some wonderful friends. One of my favorite evenings in Boston is to walk through the North End evaluating menus and enjoying the scene, then heading over to the Improv Asylum for a laugh. And they never pull anyone random up on stage - only people who volunteer - so don't be nervous about going.

My ex-boyfriend and I had our first date together at the Asylum--we went to see their Christmas special which was mildly funny but awesomely twisted and pretty original. The performance itself was kind of so-so but maybe that's b/c it wasn't an improv act.
I haven't been back for regular improv yet but I'll probably stop back--I used to perform/coach Improv myself so I love watching others at work.
I do have to give kudos to the upclose and intimate setting--I'd love to see how people in the front row squirm during a regular night. -

I had a great time! We came here for my birthday. My boyfriend found on their website a package deal for Lucca's (an italian restaurant next door) and a ticket to the show. Good deal if you're looking to try out a fancy restaurant for a change.
The atmosphere was great inside. There's a bar and small little tables prior to going into the stage area. The bar sells buckets of beer to enjoy during the show. (Didn't seem to be checking many IDs).....
Inside the ushers take you to your seats. A cozy atmosphere with a centered stage. Four sections surround the stage. I did notice that we sat on the wall opposite the doors, and it seemed that they had our backs to us a lot throughout the show but that could have just been that night only. Maybe they move around more usually?
If you're looking to embarrass someone, tell the comics that it's your birthday. They will most likely bring you up on stage. Although nobody embarrassed me in my group (it was my bday) other people were called up. The show was good, lots of suggestions from the audience, but really audience, how many times do you have to yell out childish suggestions to questions like "tampons, weed and poop". What are we 13? But all in all it was a good show with a short intermission in between. I'd love to go back soon. -
Review from Catie L.

I have a pulse. I do, I swear.
And it's not funny. Or clever. Or creative. Or improv. Ok that last one is a partial lie. It's only part improv. A lot (nearly half) of the show was sketch comedy and not improv.
And then there is the issue of their go to character was the stereotypical gay guy with a lisp. It can be funny once or twice (and it was mildly amusing the first time), but beyond that it's merely an act of desperation.
I went with high hopes, maybe that was my problem.
The bar is cool and I'm glad they reopen it at intermission. The set up of the stage is also neat, and I appreciated those aspects of it. But in terms of the comedy being comedic, it was an epic fail.
Needless to say, I will not return or advise anyone I know (or don't) to go. -

This was one of those places I've been dying to go to and simply never found the time...until a couple of weeks ago. And now, I've pretty much gone every week since then. I might be obsessed with it.
Improv is great because you really never get the same comedy show twice. I can vouch firsthand for this (see the first paragraph).
Most recently, I saw an Alumni Show (a collection of alums coming back for comedy's sake) and the "Improv Asylum presents Handbook Violation presents LivePod Shuffle" show. It's one helluva name and really one helluva show where, in the first half, the players improv scenes based on the audience's music selection and in the second half, the musicians improv tunes and the players improv scenes based on the audience's suggestions. Experimental comedy chaos.
All things considered, the tickets are pretty cheap ($15-$20), but I've never paid more than $10 for tickets. Like other posters say, check out Goldstar events and other promotions to find discounted tix. Hell, the LivePod Shuffle show was free.
Bottled beer is available and you can take it into the theater; there's usually one intermission. If you're looking for a change of pace from the normal comedy club scene, improv is a great night out. -
Review from Jenny N.
Improv Asylum is not one of those slick comedy clubs that you typically find in large cities. It has an indie feel, and you should really just go with an open mind without high expectations that it'll be a laugh-fest the entire night. Otherwise, you might end up like the whiny, disruptive ladies sitting next to us who would not shut up. It was really rude of them to boo and complain loudly that the show sucked while texting their other friends DURING the show. It was the 10 p.m. Friday show, and I'm guessing most people (like myself) came for a low-key fun night out. Excuse my little rant.
Personally, I found the musical numbers to be hilarious, and I thought the comedians were pretty talented in their "rehearsed pieces". However, the interactive audience pieces are hit or miss depending on what you've got to work with.... Bonus: you can buy drinks at the bar and bring them (including buckets of beer) into the theatre. No food though, so finish your cannoii outside.
Anyway, I probably wouldn't pay full price ($15-20) to see the 1.5 hr. show because I think that's relatively steep for improv, but you can definitely score discounted tix on GoldStar Events or half price student tix prior to each night's performance. -

The cast at the Improv was hilarious!! We had a group of 6 people and everyone really enjoyed the show. This was our second show there and both shows were completely different yet very funny! The skits were very creative and entertaining. The improv with the audience members life is always great....lets say there were some people with very interesting lives in the audience that night! =)
The tickets are a great value for the price especially since you get to see the midnight show for the price of one ticket on Sat. nights! -

Grab a bucket 'o beer and hang tight with your honey. Get ready for some witty, non-PC, slightly dirty, sometimes intelligent comedy. The actors/performers are a talented bunch. Great delivery of material, engaging, funny--chill, intimate atmosphere. Good selection of upbeat music during the transitions. My only complaint is the horribly designed broom closet of a woman's bathroom.
Def a fan & looking forward to more outings at this place! -

I love this place. Great shows Tuesday-Sunday, and Tuesday 8pm, and midnight show on Saturday are dirt cheap.
The mainstage (Thurs-Sat) are crazy funny, and NXT on Wed and Sun is really sharp and hilarious. Tuesday night is House Teams, and most of the time, they deliver, too.
Warning: they're all making it up as they go along, so if it doesn't work out the time you go, it just happens sometimes. Give them another shot. They rarely disappoint twice. -

hi-freakin-larious. loved the show, i was laughing the entire time, to the point where my stomach was hurting i was laughing so hard. These guys do real improve, asking and taking ideas from the audience. they do half skits but also improve, which made it all around found. And you knew it was good stuff because even some of the cast were laughing. they all worked really well as a team and came up with some great stuff.
i dont know if it was just tonight, but we went to the 8pm thursday night show and we got free food, for the cost of a $20 ticket. totally work it. I heard the drinks weren't very expensive either. I'm totally going back there when their skits change up again.
