A good place to eat food. Take my money!! Get ingredients for the kitchen. If you live nearby and you don't eat meat this is an even bigger asset.

Three words. Ribs. Ribs. Ribs.
Although vegan, it was better than some actual meat ribs I've had in my life, and I've lived in Texas and Atlanta! Also suggest the collard greens, chick peas, pumpkin mash, and beans. Fish (monkfish imitation) was ok, but I probably won't get it next time.
Great price for a decent amount of food and the service was friendly (it's a small sit in area and we were the only ones eating at one of the few tables on the slow Tuesday night).
Great healthy place to start your night out if you want to head to Franklin Park and balance out your health-conscious choice with a few drinks and a shameful late-night stroll past Dutch Boy Burger. -
Review from Matteo R.
Imhotep's is the best takeout Caribbean food you can get on this stretch of Crown Heights between Atlantic Avenue and Eastern Parkway.
This is both a health food store and a vegan restaurant[1]. This review is for the restaurant only, which is located on the back of the store. Get your food to go, or you grab one of the two tables that are in front of the restaurant counter[2].
The food comes in two sizes: Small (four choices, $7.50) or Large (five choices, $9). The small size was enough for me to split it between two meals[3].
The boneless back ribs in soy sauce are absolutely fantastic. Who knew that vegetarian meat substitute could taste so good? The meat is very tender and packed with flavor. And the thick, brown sauce so good that I wanted to lick the plate! Instead of doing that, I suggest you get a fry bake ($1) and use it to mop the sauce up as if it were bread. Plump and fluffy and slightly sweet, this is one of the lightest bakes I've ever had.
Chicken with curry and soy sauce, was also very good. The chicken meat was tender and juicy, and the sauce leans more towards the curry than the soy sauce.
Of the vegetable dishes I tried I would recommend both the spinach with okra, and the collard greens. Both dishes are very flavorful, albeit of completely different consistencies: spinach and okra are more creamy; collard greens nice and crunchy.
The brown rice is also a great side dish, with each single rice grain nicely separated and perfectly cooked.
So, if every dish is so good, why not 5 stars, then? Well, unfortunately the fish is not as good as I was hoping, and it's the only option I didn't like that much. The batter in my escovietched fish was a soggy, and the fish didn't have a very discernible taste. The best part of this dish were the sweet ribbons of sauteed onions.
A solid 4.5 stars. The quality of every dish I tried is well above your average takeout place (fish aside).
Open until 10pm 7 day a week.

[1] Imhotep's is the oldest vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Brooklyn, owned and operated in the same location in Crown Heights for over twenty years
[2] If you decide to stay keep in mind that the restaurant area has a very welcoming atmosphere, but it is also very bare.
[3] Food keeps very well, being as tasty the day after as it was the day I bought it.Listed in: Brooklyn, West Indies

Brooklyn, NY
Their chicken "drumsticks" are the best fake meat I've had, and I'm a big fan of fake meat. They are thick and juicy and you have to bite in and tug to get a chunk off. And super tasty, like good greasy fried chicken. The rest of the other food was also delicious, solid West Indian Ital food, which I eat a lot of.
If you don't want the arrangements they have on the menu, talk to them, they are quite accomidating. -

I eat meat. Let's get that straight.
I eat meat and I enjoy it. I tried being vegetarian on three separate occasions but gave into the flesh. Cows, pigs, chickens, goats, sheep, fish, ducks, geese--you name it, I'll stab a fork into it. But with that said, I'm not one to judge vegetarian fare any less because it doesn't compare to meat. So my low grade of Imhotep has nothing to do with my diet, but rather my tastes in general.
Imhotep is a small organic products focused vegetarian market and take-out restaurant. And unlike every reviewer before me, I was actually largely unimpressed by the food here. You might automatically discredit what I felt because I am a meat eater. Perhaps you're thinking, "Oh, she's probably complaining that it didn't taste like meat." Not true. I just hated the sauces here--it was overly sweet and made everything nearly inedible for me.
So the restaurant is actually a take-out joint. They have about 12 dishes already pre-made and sitting in heating trays. You can get the small platter ($7) and get 4 sides or you can get the large platter ($9) and get ... more than 4 sides... I don't remember exactly. Ha.
I got the pasta, the soy ribs, the tofu sausage, and the curried potato salad with chickpeas. I liked the potato salad the most. They curry seasoning was wonderful (had a slight kick) and the chickpeas were a really tasty addition. The pasta was rather non-descript. If anything, it was a bit limp and bland, as the sauce was too weak. I actually liked the texture of the ribs a lot and agree that it does tastes rather delicious and meat-like. But I couldn't stand the sauce that it came with, as it tasted like chipotle sauce with sweetener. And though the sauce for the sausages was different, it too was too sweet.
But my roommate, who is a vegetarian, did enjoy both the sausages and the ribs, so it may be just me.
Imhotep is also a small market that sells organic products. But be warned, it's no Whole Foods; in fact, it looks like the inside of a deli, and instead of a twinkie, there's organic unbleached flour or something. Though the market itself isn't very impressive, it had a very extensive herbs and nuts collection. I can't remember the last time I saw periwinkle on sale. Also, it had tea tree oil, which was what I came to the store for originally.
I think in Manhattan, or even Park Slope, this place wouldn't be too highly graded, but I do realize that it fills a need that the area has long ignored. I mean, all those vegetable-eating and gentrification-causing people got to get their soymilk locally, right?Listed in: Eastern Prospects

Um, how have I not reviewed Imhotep's yet?
This used to be my spot a few years ago, when I lived on New York and St John's. Since I couldn't always make it out to Veggie Castle (R.I.P.) I started checking out Imhotep's. Like every other day. It caused me to overdraft my checking account and I didn't care. Then I moved and stopped going. Then I moved back to the hood, and it just kinda slipped my mind. And then I met this wonderful boy who, on our first date, brought me some dinner from Imhotep. A love rekindled and a new love all in one night! Two years later, Imhotep is still where we go when we want to have a little romantic evening haha!
My favorites are:
the bbq chunks
the black eyed peas (amazing!)
the curry tofu
the lentils
the green beans
the kale greens
the chickpeas (delicious!)
the pumpkin (yessir!)
A small plate will definitely do you good. Grab a ginger beer and dig in!
A couple time my dude and I sit in the back room, most times we just take it to go. Apparently, if you live around the way, delivery is free.
Also, even though the store is kinda pricey, it's a good place to grab a few packaged organic, vegetarian items. -

Sometimes you just want to pay 3.75 for a meal in return of getting ridiculously, life threateningly, full.
For 7.50 (a small) you have a choice of 4 separate Imhotep creations.
This is not small, do not be mistaken.
For the sake of your stomach, I beg you, split it.
But it is so, so good.
MMMMMMMMMMfake ribs.
also...broccoli rab! usually so underappreciated, but perfectly made!
Drool.
Oh, and they are super nice here.
And two seconds from my new apartment.
Can't wait to come back and try their juices.

After my last visit, I decided to get the small plate. I almost didn't go for it because I was worried that I might be still hungry after. However, the 'small' plate is still pretty hefty. I almost didn't finish it - but in the end I did. I must have been really hungry the last time I came here!
It's still all good and vegan!Listed in: NYC Eats

Let's get one out of the way first: This isn't good vegetarian food, this is good Caribbean food. Too often omnivores see the "vegan" or "vegetarian" label and run screaming, but Imhotep deserves even the committed meatitarian's attention.
The restaurant itself is located in the back of a small shop, and every time I go in it's always the same dude cooking. There's a rotation of dishes, but the staples of the menu are the rice and beans, the soy ribs, and the pumpkin stew. The rice and beans are pretty much required, since the place is like walking into a locals-only restaurant in the Virgin Islands, and they don't disappoint. The soy ribs don't really taste like meat, but that's not really a bad thing, either, since they just taste good. And the pumpkin stew is an awesome take on a middle American squash medley that's making me hungry as I write about it.
Anything else is a welcome wild card on your plate, and at $7.50 for a four-food plate, you can afford to try everything on the menu when you return. Because you'll be back, I promise. -
Review from Jared M.
An equation for discount ordering: (number of people)-1=(number of small dinners one should order). You get 4 choices of items for each small dinner ($7.50) and 5 for large ($9). If you have four people and follow this equation, you all share 12 different items for $5.63 each and will probably end up sufficiently full.
Must gets= Ribs, pumpkin, greens, chickpeas, chicken (though it costs extra, it comes with a wooden bone)
Avoid=fish (points for tasting like real fish, many more points subtracted for tasting like very fishy fish) -

This place is good. It's cheap, and the food is pretty tasty. I just ask for 4 random things, and they are all good, though the "ribs" do stand out.
And even though it's been said on here before, non-vegan/veggie people need not be scared. -

I was crushed when the place on Lincoln just off of Franklin closed so I was thrilled to find this place almost equidistant from my house.
I love everything here but the tofu that is supposed to be tofu as opposed to the tofu ribs (surely the best thing at Imhotep) tofu salmon tofu chicken etc.
As others have noted Tofu Ribs and Pumpkin are to die for.
The pople are great, two people can easily share their meal portions and you can buy a huge bottle of organic juice or limeaid from the store and have a complete meal for two about $11 or $12.
love you guys -

Vegan haven in the middle of Crown Heights! The hot food is definitely decent, with good size portions, and they have a great selection of herbs and (mostly) vegan non-perishables.
If you're in the neighborhood, it's worth giving a try, but probably not worth going out of your way. -

Had their Tofu Beef with veggies Platter... I never knew Tofu was so good! Well at least the way they make it here! Great Vegetarian Restaurant. Just beware it does get real hot during the summer...

After experiencing some vegan Caribbean food in Prospect Park a month or so ago and discovering this website even later than that, i took it upon myself to locate a restaurant that sold this amazing food. Surely, I thought, there must be somewhere in Brooklyn, a place that specializes in this delicious cuisine (New York is, after all, home to a raw/vegan soul food restaurant). And lo and behold, it exists in Crown Heights.
While more of a take out place/grocery than a restaurant proper, the food is absolutely fantastic, assuming you enjoy these kinds of flavors. And if you don't, then you probably wouldn't be reading this anyway.
The bbq chicken "legs" are absolutely to die for, as are the ribs. Essentially, everything I tried here was absolutely fantastic. It would be hard to go wrong, but if you're really looking for those chewy meaty substitutes, stick to the ribs (hah, get it?) and the chicken.
The sides are fairly typical of what you'd get at a Caribbean restaurant, but all done really well (especially the rice and the squash). These flavors and prices absolutely beat out any fancier LES vegan hubs. Tofu is cheap, so why pay $15 for it?
The only thing missing from my experience was hot sauce, which I'm almost certain I didn't receive only because I didn't ask.

soy BBQ ribs? It's so good you don't realize it isn't meat. Now, I'm not a vegan and when I was a vegetarian I was one of those vegetarians that hated soy hot dogs and random products that tried to act like they were meat, if I have the taste for something, I want the real thing. But I have changed my song with the Imhotep vegan fare. It's great. As for the atmosphere...it's lacking, I'd recommend take-out though there are a few tables to sit down at. I find the store to be a bit pricey for vegan products and would probably opt to buy those elsewhere.

After stumbling in here on a whim while walking from Atlantic Ave to Eastern Parkway I can't say we were immediately convinced that this was the right choice.
30 seconds later after perusing the refrigerated section of various kinds of veggie meats and vegan milks I was starting to see the light.
But it wasn't until I started talking with the woman behind the hot food counter that I realized we were exactly where we wanted to be. Now I'm no vegan, nor am I a vegetarian. Though I always date/am surrounded by them so by default I find myself knee-deep in seitan and tofu when all I really want is some slow-cooked meat. But on this day, in the back of this store, I did not give a crap about any kind of meat.
The CHICKEN WINGS the BARBECUED CHICKEN the mock FISH - it was all AMAZING! The lovely lady who had cooked it all for us even suggested we sit in the back room so that the high powered fan up front didn't cool off our food too quickly (who even thinks of that?!) we didn't heed her advice because we were way too busy chowing down on her delicious provisions. I can't say enough. Although I can assure you that I will be back a million more times and I will be sure to tell everyone I know. This place RULES. -

Brooklyn, NY
Yes, it happens to be right in my neighborhood and delivery is free, but Imhotep's is one of my favorite everyday joints in the entire City!
Why?
It's clean, they use all-natural, organic foods.....and it's crazy cheap for the way they hook-up health-conscious food here. (Nowadays these organic/health-oriented restaurants around the City will really cost you!)
Imhotep's is run by a family of rastas and is a health food store & eatery-in-one. But don't underestimate their no-frills look & set-up, Imhotep's has had a religious following in the neighborhood for the last 20+ years, so you already know they know how to cook vegan "Ital" food to the fullest...that means it's natural, good tasting vegan food with a Caribbean slant that skillfully employs herbs and spices, vegetables and natural products to season food, and very little salt -- but Imhotep's food transcends all restaurant categories/cultures/genres: it's just plain good food.
What I want to know is why this neighborhood spot is still a best-kept secret when it's so yummy, healthy, open pretty late, friendly, clean, delivers, but super affordable too?? They even take credit cards over the phone! I used to order delivery from them like everyday, but have not be home as much lately. I just hope they stay around for a long time!!!
Let me give you an example of how delicious Imhotep is....I have friends who are so far from vegan or even vegetarian who have devoured those soy BBQ ribs, the steamed pumpkin, the greens, the beans, the soup they make from scratch everyday, the veggie-meat entrees, the fresh juices.....tellin me they'd eat there everyday if they lived in my neighborhood and never miss their meat or dairy products. The thing that's amazing is that they don't overseason or over-salt to compensate for traditionally manufactured ingredients like a lot of vegetarian or traditional Caribbean restaurants do, such as Ital Shak the next block down. They even have a delicious and inexpensive, all-natural Ital breakfast every day. Unlike other Ital, vegetarian, or neighborhood restaurants, Imhotep's food is so tasty and flavorful, yet has a pure taste to it that gives you the impression that it's still natural, and not overloaded with all kinds of heavily manufactured ingredients and salty seasonings that have you feeling heavy and dying of thirst after.
Whether you live in Crown Heights, or are just passing through, stopping at Imhotep is a must!!Listed in: My Neighborhood

Imhotep's take out is very kind on the wallet and super tasty as well. The large platter will feed two people to the bursting pretty easily (I think that it's 9 bucks). The vegetarian ribs are to die for and the vegetables are really good too. Probably not extremely healthy, but definitely better than any fast food out there.

All hail, the mighty Imhotep!
"Chancellor of the King of Egypt, Doctor, First in line after the King of Upper Egypt, Administrator of the Great Palace, Hereditary nobleman, High Priest of Heliopolis, Builder, Chief Carpenter, Chief Sculptor and Maker of Vases in Chief."(according to Wikipedia)
Yes, Imhotep was all these things to ancient Egypt, a "Jack of all Trades" I'd say. Thus, it appears that the mighty Sun God, Ra has bequeathed the gifts of Imhotep once again for fair Brooklynites in Crown Heights. Imhotep's truly is the 8th wonder of the world for providing some of the best glutten-tastic vegan fare.
Upon entry into this restaurant/health food grocer, you'll notice a certain steamy atmosphere which causes some serious fogged windows....have no fear, that's just the Caribbean chef's passion trying to spread healthful, loving vibes to Nostrand Ave.
While I have no idea the calorie content in the delicious, flavorful, and unique dishes, I really don't care. It's just that good. I even find myself making embarrassing "Mmm" noises while eating this food. Every time I order Imhotep's, I just tell them to give me the "small" meal plate (which includes 4 items) and drool in anticipation of this generously portioned, sumptuous surprise. I'll just tell them to slap down whatever they've got: mac n' "cheese", okra, fake meat ribs, chick peas, pumpkin, curried potatoes, shredded "pork". I usually also order this fried bread, called "bake" and the infamous fake chicken drumstick literally made on a stick(you have to pay extra for those as they don't come with the 4 item small plate). Even my meat-eating friends regularly crave Imhotep's vegan offerings.
Imhotep's is undeniably a take-out place as the seating is limited and awkward...I have gotten my food to stay, during those times when I just wanted to be alone with my fake chicken leg! Buuut just go ahead and get it delivered, unless of course it's anywhere below 30 degrees F because, as they told me," it's too cold to deliver". I guess this means that I'm gonna have to schlepe over there until about April to get my fix...it's worth it, promise.
All hail mighty Imhotep! -

Best vegan food i've ever had, NICE RICE -- eventually the taste gets a bit redundant, but the portions to price are amazing, and thats all I care about in a restaurant. Don't judge it by the way it looks, just get some ribs, pumpkin mash, and rice

I'm updating this review. While the food is still tasty, the customer service could definitely be improved upon. And, there's no option smaller than the $7.50 dinner, unless you want to get a side of something, but then you only get 1 kind.
Down the street at D'Ital Shak, they're much more friendly, small dinners are $7, and the food is tasty too. Plus they have some vegan baked goods like rolls and pastries. The bread pudding is delicious.
End of update.
----------------------
I was suspicious because the curries looked like they had been sitting around all day, and they probably had been. None the less, having recently moved to Crown Heights and being vegan, I don't have many options for take-out in the 'hood. I was craving Indian, but Bombay Masala looked a little pricey so finally decided to give this place a shot.
It is DELICIOUS.
Many dishes were already gone by the time I got there, so I got chick peas, the fake ribs, and green beans. I could've gotten another selection on my $7.50 small dinner plate, but the portions were huge, and I decided 3 was enough.
This is vegan COMFORT FOOD. It's not healthy - the stuff is heavily drenched in sauces, salt, and sugar (even if they are organic). However, the flavors will explode in your mouth. Like others mentioned, the soy ribs were particularly outstanding.
I'm so glad to have a cheap vegan take-out place in my neighborhood. Even though it's not that healthy, I'm grateful for the option. For healthier places, there are a few juice bars on the same street. One of them, Punch Line, says it'll have raw foods soon!
Pros: cheap, tasty, independently owned business run by really nice people!
Cons: don't come here for the decor or to trim your waistline -

After reading reviews on this place I ventured over last night and got a "small"- ribs, rice, okra, and kale. I also got two muffins, as I was sharing with another person. The food was definitely tasty. The muffins were very good, as were the ribs. The okra was okay, a bit bland, but it was the first time I've ever had okra so I'm not sure how else it is prepared. The guy working was nice, described each item to me, and he helped pick out some frozen items. The price is very reasonable as well. The one negative thing is that this morning our fingers were a bit swollen... meaning the amount of salt added is questionable.

This is a small health food store with prepared food in the back. There is a fluorescent lit eating area with 2-3 tables. The food really is very tasty, although I wouldn't say healthy exactly. It is vegan but so sauced up and stewed and spiced and salted... with many different processed soy products to choose from. The $9 plate, which gives you many choices from the hot plates, is big enough for me and my husband!

Whoa - awesome vegetarian food in my neighborhood -- for CHEAP! The fake ribs were f'ing awesome, with a really good sweet and slightly spicy sauce. I also loved the fake sausage dish and the chickpeas. The okra sketched me out a little bit - it looked slimy - but I guess that's just okra in general, nothing against Imhotep's preparation. My meat-eating boyfriend also loved this stuff. I can't wait to try more!

the "ribs" really do stand out. the price is awesome, the food doesn't really even taste like it's been sitting on a steam tray all afternoon, but my one problem is: sporadic overuse of MSG. make sure you have water handy, you'll need it. i'll probably go back sometime when i feel an urgent need to stuff my face but only have a few bucks in my pocket.
*edit: the ribs were scarfed before the vegetarians arrived at a bbq. subsequent trips have been less salty/msg-ful. worth a try -
Review from Jacob D.
Los Angeles, CA
After reading the reviews on yelp, I was really excited to eat here, and I wasn't disappointed at all. I asked the chef/server for some beans and rice and told him to put any other 3 dishes on my plate that he liked as his favorites. He must have liked that I did that, because he said "alright, I'll hook you up real nice," and he ended up giving me the fake ribs, which were awesome, the pumpkin dish, some noodles with veggies, and even a little bit of cabbage, which including my beans and rice makes a total of 5 dishes but he charged me for the 4 dish meal at $7.50. It was delicious would usually be way too much food if I hadn't left my metro pass at home and had to walk a lot that day. For all you anti-fake meat people, look back at what I had and see that I only had one dish that contained a meat substitute; there's plenty to eat there that doesn't involve processed soy or wheat gluten. I could see how someone might think the food is too sweet, but that's why you have to get the beans and rice and some veggies to soak up the sauce from the other dishes; just because you're eating out doesn't mean you can ignore your mom's advice and not have a well-balanced meal. The service was friendly, obviously, and if I lived closer I'd be a regular.

This place is basically a counter of food at the back of a little health food shop. Tried the bbq pork, a soy drumstick, and rice... Food was lukewarm/got cold fast... Not bad but not great. You can buy drinks out of the fridge in the shop part. The other reviews on here are definitely over-hyping it. I'd go here again but only if I was really craving a fake meat and didn't want to go far.

I really really love that this was so close to my apartment when I lived in Crown Heights. You get a LOT of food for pretty cheap. All of it was very delicious. They specialize in fake meats. There is also a grocery store/food thing in the front of the store where you can purchase various health food/vegan items. This place is worth trying out. It's not the kind of place you would eat in, it is def best for take-out.
