Ahh yes, my local comic book hole, where my nerdy indulgences can be filled, and eclectic characters are as far as the eye can see.
This is a great shop where like minded individuals can speak freely without public ridicule of our geekdom. Seriously though, I love this place. I'm here every wednesday to pick up, and Steve and Perry are always there to greet me and be there generally awesome selves. And there's always someone there talking about latest issues, debating fiction, discussing the week in sports, or any what have yous.
Come on by, browse the goodies, talk shop, and try to match wits with nerdy wits! -

This is the first comic book store that felt like MY comic book store! The staff is not only extremely knowledgeable of old and new comics, but are friendly and more than happy to help.
I had drifted away from comics for a while before finding this place, and when I walked in I asked the gent behind the counter (Perry) if he had any recommendations for someone getting back into the game. He asked me some questions and then helped me pick out 3 or 4 comics (all of which I love so far!)
A wonderful comic book family! -

I had been out of the loop from comic books for years, but decided to get back into it a few months ago.
Illusive is less than a 10-minute drive from my workplace, so I decided to check it out. The store has a great atmosphere, with a nice layout and a comprehensive assortment of comics (along with gaming stuff and other collectibles).
What really sets this place apart from other comic stores I've been to in the past is the staff. Anna (proud owner) and her minions (Steve and Perry) are very friendly and knowledgeable about comics. Sure, if you are walking into any store for the first (and possibly only) time ever, you might feel a bit awkward and not feel fully engaged with the staff (and possibly lash out with a spiteful and scathing review). But a little time spent chatting with the staff and building rapport over a couple of visits to the shop will be well rewarded. It's a great feeling for me to walk into the store, be greeted personally by name (not an indifferent nod or impersonal acknowledgement), and have my comics ready for pick-up (more on the subscriptions next).
A great feature that Illusive offers is a free subscription service (i.e. "pull" list). Just provide them with a list of at least 5 comics (monthly issues) and they'll make sure to have them ready for your next visit, AND apply a discount. Not sure how many other local stores offer this type of service, but I really enjoy the convenience and it ensures that you'll never leave the store with a 2nd or 3rd printing.
They send out weekly newsletters (to those that sign up via their web site) and maintain an active profile on Facebook to send out updates and collect feedback from customers on upcoming events, in-store activities, and suggestions for improvement.
Occasionally, they hold in-store signing events by comic book writers and artists. They even offer to have your books signed for you if you can't make it to an event. Talk about customer-centric!
In summary, Illusive Comics is a great store run by great people who know what they're doing and actually care about their patrons. -
Review from David M.
San Jose, CA
I've been to and subscribed at many of the South Bay Area comic shops over the years but Illusive is by far the best. What sets Illusive apart is the great customer service and friendly atmosphere that always exists in the shop.
The shop is clean, organized, and well stocked and what they don't have in stock, they work hard to get for you. In addition to being friendly, the staff is very knowledgeable about comics and can help you find what you are looking for. And as is pretty typical for comics book shops, there is a nice discount if you subscribe.
Illusive is also a great place to game. There are a lot of local options for Magic players, D&Ders, and other types of gamers. However, Illusive's welcoming atmosphere makes it a great place to game if you are not looking for cut-throat competition. All the gamers are nice and love adding new people to the Illusive gaming community. Everyone is more than happy to teach you about whatever game is currently being played. -
Review from Daniel D.
San Jose, CA
So I haven't written a review in months but I feel compelled to jot down some thoughts on this place.
As for comics I can't comment because I'm not into them.
As for card games (mainly Magic T.G.) I believe they offer something you might not get at the mainstream stores. I have been getting back into the swing of things with Magic after 3 years out of the loop. So I found this place on Groupon and went into to pick up an Intro pack with my coupon (ended up just getting sleeves and some dice).
1. Its quaint and out of the way with a more home-style feel to it. Comics about the shelves and tables in the spaces that are left. The chairs are all random like they were bought at a swap meet or garage sale.... for some reason this is a plus imo, adds a bit of character. Wouldn't be surprised if a few were even donated by the players.
2. Friendly staff that will inform you to the best of their knowledge and if they don't know something they will try to put you in touch with someone who does know. The owners knowledge seems to center around comics with only the basic info being attributed to the card games.
3. 10% off merchandise if your there for casual play/organized events
4. The MOST important imo. The people who play there. I found myself torn between going to Superstars in San Jose where the booster packs are a buck less and the drafts are three bucks less, but after a few FNM's (Friday night magic) sessions I realize that in paying the extra cost I am gaining something more for those extra dollars. The people that play in this venue are of the highest quality and will help you out whenever you ask. As a noobie this friendliness is invaluable.
In the end this store is closer to me than Superstars (saved gas money) and there is a different vibe to the place that is more welcoming than the mainstream warehouse that is Superstars. Don't get me wrong I got help when I went there too but I got the feeling that if I was drafting I wouldn't get help forging my deck.
Tonight (FNM) I won a round against the guy who helped me cut a few cards here and there from my drafted deck. Even though i beat him tonight I know he will still help me later on down the road. Thats worth a few extra bucks imo.
I give them 4.75 stars cause there is still some temptation that if I needed some general items or a bulk purchase I might go to Superstars, but I'm comfortable rounding the score up for a great venue and invaluable help if your new/returning to a game.
Hope to see you there :-) -

A great comic shop and a great community of people. Having been to other shops, especially for my gaming fixes (D&D, Magic, etc), this is the only one I still frequent.
Staff is great, friendly, and very approachable and has a great knowledge of the product. Will go out of their way to assist answering questions and trying to accommodate any request you might have if it is possible.
Gaming is booming with a gaming 'event' happening almost every day, and they will accommodate demo'ing a game that they have for you. -

This place is a great comic shop. The guys that run it are really cool, easy to talk to and ask questions. The walls are organized really well and the shop is pretty roomy.
They have some interesting game nights that go on and although I've never dipped into D&D, I've always wanted to try it out. Though they do have enough to indulge my Magic and comic book addiction. I've gotten into a few new comics I would have never picked up if I didn't walk into here at least once a week. -

San Jose, CA
I go here almost every Friday for FNM. The atmosphere is great, everyone who plays there is really fun and no one is stuck up or rude. Its just a very chill place to go on my one day off a week, de-stress from work and play some magic with helpful gamers. Hence why I give it five stars...I don't, however, read or collect comic books, so check out others' reviews.

San Jose, CA
A comics-only store as far as I could tell during my weekday afternoon visit in October/November.
Comics on shelves to the left, a small register and glass case in the middle of the store, and protective sleeves/cases/binders on the right. A lot of space that seems to be wasted (and could be used for gaming if they had some gaming products).
[edit] I'm told this space is used for gaming throughout the week, but I have yet to experience this first hand. There were no tables out when I was there.
They had A booster box of the latest Magic the gathering expansion [edit] Scars of Mirrodin on display. When I asked about the box price, I was told something ridiculous like $136. Besides that one box, and a deck builder kit there was a small standing rack with sleeves.
If you're there for comics, cool; if you're looking for games or gaming, go to Legends. -

I've been coming to Illusive for a couple months now and I love it! The staff and owner are very friendly and helpful. I haven't read comic since I was a kid and didn't know where to start again. The staff gave me suggestions and helped me set up a box. This store has a great selection, and is clean and well organized! I would recommend to anyone.

Review from Kellie A.
Santa Clara, CA
The parking is good, the space is good, but there are a few things lacking.
If you are a table top gamer, you will rate the place 5 stars. If you are not a table top gamer, you will be shunned and feel awkward every visit. I'm either: 1) completely ignored as they talk to their favorite customers (I've danced around trying to just get noticed so I can pay and GTFO), or 2) instantly asked if I need help as I'm entering the door (cuz you know, girls in comic shops totally need help :P we can't read words or anything, and I just got in the door, do I have enough time to need help yet? just say hello and be friendly) like they wanted to get me the one thing I want and get me out of there. When has anyone gone to a comic shop looking for 1 thing.. I mean really.. let me browse and find things to buy. You do want me to buy things right? This is a store, not a private club hangout for elite geeks, right? I'm not too sure.
The other recent review states: "Gaming is booming with a gaming 'event' happening almost every day". What this has meant to me is that there are a bunch of loud people (wanna buy a headache anyone!? no problem, this one's on the house!) who stare at you when you walk in, and the employees care about them and only them. I have never felt cared about as a customer there. Ever.
They have a wide selection of current comics, a decent selection of back issues, a ton of graphic novel stuff, and a very small adult section. The adult section is the most interesting thing they've got going on. The free stuff table is also awesome. Sometimes I think the free stuff is better than the stuff I find to buy.
We used to buy our comic supplies here until we bought a box for comics, got home, folded it up, and they'd given us a magazine box. We had to bring it back and we get "sorry". Oh hey, no problem, I love going to buy the same thing twice. It's awesome. These other reviews say they're knowledgeable on comics but I just haven't seen it yet.
Some of the things I enjoy and would like to see: more action figures, more statues, better manga/anime goods selection, more small run publications.
There are good sales all the time. Most times they don't last long enough to be easily taken advantage of and sometimes the specifications are just weird... There was a sale on all comics with Red, white, and blue on the color. Really? I'm going to have to figure out which back issues I need that have red, white, and blue? There's no way to plan ahead for that. The only solution is to not buy anything and wait for a sale in which it will either be or not be on sale. Can't be worse than not on sale, right?
I've been to this store close to 10 times and my review has tons of questions. This place just leaves me feeling awkward and confused. -

This has been called "Nerd Heaven." I totally agree.
I went in and the nice man working the counter welcomed me in, then let me browse. The tall racks displayed all the usuals in a visually pleasing way. They have a large variety of titles. They have a nice selection of discounted graphic novels and books. I found some new-to-me series that I added to my pile. I made my way back to the front of the store and noticed that it went on! They are in two small stores that was combined into big one.
The left side of the store is mostly back issues and also $1 selections. They have gaming books, cards, and necessities as well. I picked up a d20 that was marbled with some gold leaf. They have a good price on packs pf boards and bags. And I just had to have some of their Star Wars talking plush key chains.
What is really spectacular about the store is how the owners take pride in their business. I sent an email after close of business one night, hoping to have an answer in the next day or two. Anna, the owner, responded within an hour! She wasn't in the store when I went in, and I'm hoping to meet her on my next trip.
They host gaming nights for D&D and I think they have Magic games, too. -

Being out of buying comics for close to 2.5 years, I felt like a 40 year old virgin trying to get back into the game. I knew the basics but was out of touch with the ever volatile universe of characters such as Wolverine and Bat-Man.
What really stood out to me, was my first call there, a gentleman named Steve answer the phone. Was really friendly, took the time to listen and then actually gave me insight and shot the shit.
Im heading there this afternoon, but just based on the 10 minute call, I was very impressed with the customer service. -

There's really nothing bad to say about this place. The people are friendly, the parking lot always has room, and the facility itself is full of what NEEDS to be in a comic book store. I cant emphasize just how great the service is as well as their inventory. This place has it all!!! Corny...but true =)

This really is one of the best comic shops in the area. Staff is friendly and very into what they do. Anna is great and who could say no to a personal tour of the shop? I have a great experience every time I come in.

I know my 5 stars won't make much of a difference, but hell, I'll write a review anyway. This is a great place. The owner (sorry, but I forgot his name) is very cool, friendly, and helpful. Actually everyone I've dealth with is pretty cool. They can help find old comics and pretty much order anything you want. They all seem really knowledgable and know their stuff. Hold onto you seats people - I'll actually pay FULL PRICE at Illusive (and y'all know what a cheapass I am) just to help support them and in my own sad litte way, keep them in business. Go shop there! Now! If you're not into comics (if that's even possible cuz comics rock) buy a buttload and give them to me. I'll be there Wednesday to pick them up.

So far this seems to be the friendliest shop in the area, and everyone I've talked to via email or in person has been more than wiling to help. I appreciate the $1 bin and the used trade paperbacks (so-called "graphic novels) which are 50% off. I have witnessed people gaming here but no one has been rude or weird yet (it happens sometimes). There's also a 20% off on back issues sale on Mondays, which I think is pretty cool.

MTG is a bit more expensive here than other shops. Wanted to get a FATPACK of the new set and heard they match other stores, they don't, so I paid $3.99 a pack. For MTG, Superstars is the way to go. Kind of bummed me out because I generally really like it here. Also, when I was waiting in line, the guy in front of me spent around $150 in comics, which is fine and more power to him, but the cashier, in casual conversation, said that he wasn't the big buyer today, one guy apparently spent $240, and he pointed to the big spender(he was playing D&D or something). That kind of weirded me out. Felt like he was bragging about people spending a ton of money there, maybe I was the only person who felt that way, who knows.

This has been my shop (in one shape/form/locale/name or another) for the better part of 15 years (I just dated myself, didn't I?).
GREAT service and comraderie through and through. And with the recent remodeling and expansion, I'm hoping to come here fatihfully for years and years to come... and should all things go to plan and we (Iron Umbrella Media and Studio Jofximus) eventually make it big in the industry, this'll be the shop that I give thanks to and call home...
Steve, the store manager has always been very accomodating and friendly, putting in special orders on artbooks and whatnot. And Anna, the new proprietor is simply awesome and is genuinely interested in learning what her customers might like to see.
Its going to be an awesome shop again! -
Review from Jonathan H.

The store has been recently and dramatically expanded, it now holds nearly double what it used to. Their shelves are stocked with an extremely broad and wide variety of material, from the standard spandex super heroes, pulp horror/science fiction, extremely dark or rare independent material, and even some more esoteric stuff. Every time I cannot find what I am looking for, Andy or Steve has offered to find it for me. Even months later, they will sometimes surprise me with something I long gave up looking for.
Often if you cannot find issues of a particular comic, they will either order trade paperbacks or barter with other stores to find the exact issue you want. They also give excellent recommendations, as many of my current favorite reads originated from conversations with all of the staff. The store also sells a variety of games, and has weekly gaming afternoons within on Saturdays.
I've been going to this store for over fourteen years, and they have never once disappointed me. I first went to it when it was Brian's books, and I bought a variety of comics. When I went back after college, I met Andy and Steve and it was called Fan Boy Comics. Four more years later, it's now Illusive comics but the same great store remains. -

Review from Geomar R.
Home of the infamous, "Soup or Stew," heated battle between then-owner Andy and Steve. This place values loyalty and makes sure the regulars keep coming back. Steve is a colorful character who is extremely knowledgeable, whether it comes to comics, sports, or even life. They'll rent out a box for you so can customize what comics you want each week to secure a copy before it sells out. There is a huge selection of new releases, back issues, mangas, and collectibles. It's unfortunate that they stopped selling sports cards. They have recently expanded with a new owner. It is much easier to navigate around. My best friend loves to drop by each Wednesday to listen and view the live Pod-Casts because he says they are exciting and worth calling off work for. I disagree...
Oh yeah. Ask Steve the following question: "Is it a soup or stew?" -

Fun nice shop - friendly people. Looks like they took over additional lot & expanded - very nice.
Pros
- Reasonable inventory. New comics weekly - look like they sell out pretty fast though.
- Was able to find recent obscure back issues still in stock (ex: Zero-G).
- Very helpful staff - I think it was owner lady. She greeted me nicely as a new customer & got up from her work desk & walked me over to answer questions.
- Parking lot
Cons
- quite a few new titles sold out (5-6) at 1:30pm Wed. makes it hard to call this my weekly spot it I'm going to miss so many - I don't like to subscribe.

This has the feel of a store that could be great, but it always falls flat when I'm in there.
They have lots of space, and tons of stuff. They also have a fairly large unused area off to the right side that doesn't have the lights on that makes the store feel shut down whenever you look at it. I suspect they use it for game tournaments or something; otherwise it's oddly wasted space.
I'd go here more often for a back up store, but the older guy who works behind the counter makes me uncomfortable. -

Illusive has a fantastic selection and a great staff. The first time I was in there, the owner (Anna), helped me find a magazine that she didn't normally carry when I couldn't even remember the name. She was also willing to point me to another shop to find an item that she didn't have. In both cases, it required a little digging on her part and she got back to me via email. Now that's good service.
It's not the closest shop for me, but I'l still make the trek occasionally because I like them so much. -

I buy comics very rarely these days. I tend to buy Comic Book Reference books. The only place I buy them is Illusive comics, the follow-on to FanbotPlanet.Comics and before that, Brian's Books, where I bought my first comics back in 1980 or so.
Illusive has a great staff. They're friendly, funny, and know everything you'll ever need to know. I've never been steered wrong by any of them.
Of course, the prices ain't bad either, which is a big deal for me.
I've done Podcasts there with http://FanboyPlanet.com over the last couple of years and the crew that hangs around is top-notch. It also helps that the selection of comics is just about the best in the South Bay. I don't keep a box anywhere, but if I did, It'd be here. -

I just moved to California from New Jersey a few months ago and my husband and I traveled to all the Comic Stores around us to decide which one would be our home. Illusive Comics & Games has a really cool vibe and everyone there is really friendly and fun to be around. The owner, Anna, is really psyched on making the store a cool place for people to come to, and it really shows. Her positive vibes are infectious.
I usually draft Magic: The Gathering there on Fridays when I can and it's been really awesome. The atmosphere is laid back and fun. All the people that frequent here are super nice, and I've made some awesome new friends coming here.
And of course, comics! As with most good stores if you subscribe to a box there you get a discount on your books.
The only downsides I have are the lack of 50 cent bins, and action figures. However, the shop has frequent sales and will order anything for you that they don't currently have in stock.
Someone mentioned that the Magic Booster Boxes here are priced too high. I try to keep in mind that this is primarily a Comic Book shop that also deals in Gaming, and hosts events. The prices cannot be compared to Gaming shops that deal primarily in Gaming supplies.
Overall I have a good experience at this store, and it's become one of my regular Stomping Grounds. :D -

I found out about this place through Groupon. I wanted to surprise my son for his outstanding performance at school with some fun reading material.
This shop was surprisingly large and they had a huge selection. The guy who worked there (I didn't get his name) was helpful and informative (a true comic geek me thinks).
I ended up walking out with a few books for myself. :)
I look forward to going to the May 1st event! -

Santa Clara, CA
This shop has great customer service. The workers are all down to earth and seem to take their time actually getting to know the customers. They always have a good selection of comics to choose from, whether it be new or old. Their Comics are usually in good condition! They never sell any damaged comics or faulty comics in anyway. I feel as if they truly look at everything they put out and take the time with their product.
The shop's layout just gives you a friendly home feeling. The pricing at this store is great! They don't try to overprice variants or anything. They always have good deals too!
They are great on being neat and clean. The comics are always easy to locate and the place is always filled with friendly faces. The parking lot is perfect, i always find parking.
I have yet to be let down by this shop. I have gone to other bigger and more well known shops and they just dont seem to care about their customers like the people at Illusive Comics & Games. Even on days where the shop is swamped, the Workers still take the time to talk to every individual.
DONT SLEEP ON THIS SHOP. Come by and experience the epicness for yourself! -
Review from Jolly A.

I always say that the reason you go to a comic book shop these days is the staff and the customer service. I've only been here about four or five times over the past year, but they recognize and remember me. One of the guys I chatted with even spotted me at a concert and said hello.
They're friendly, they have excellent sales on their great selection of trade paperbacks. They're well-stocked in current issues and even have a little back issue selection on-hand. They sell some action figures and quite a few card games, too. There's usually a group or two playing magic or somesuch in here.
This is an excellent "geek store," if you're looking for a place with more than just comics but don't want a ton of clutter, either. -

Brian's Books is NOT CLOSED:
The shop has moved a bit to a smaller space, but it is open, and in the same strip mall around the corner, past the Juicy Burger. They have no sign as of yet, and they are having problems with transfering their old phone number, but they were up and running yesterday when I stopped by.. C'mon over and show your support.
It's a good shop with very friendly, helpful staff; I'll give a more formal review posting in a few weeks -

This is far and away my favorite store in the bay area and I've been to most of them.
I moved here a few years ago and went around to tons of other stores, Santa Clara, Mountain View, San Jose, Campbell etc and none compare to Illusive.
I love the staff, Steve, Tim, Anna etc are all fantastic and the store has a very welcoming feel. They have a pull and hold option and a student discount (holla!) and a huge selection of books including back issues.
All around great shop and I highly recommend it! -

Review from Adam P.
San Jose, CA
I first found this place by using yelp in fact, because of the very high ratings, and good lord did this place not disappoint! My first two reactions, upon entering the store, is #1, HOW HUGE it is compared to how it looks on the outside. It's almost like stepping into The Doctor's TARDIS(Doctor Who fans will understand the moment they step foot inside), as you'd see it from outside, and expect a tiny hole in the wall desk with maybe 1 or 2 racks, but when you step inside, you're treated to one of the biggest and most well organized comics shops i've ever seen. That leads to reaction #2 that I had, which is how BRIGHT AND CLEAN everything is! It's really amazing to finally walk into a comic shop and not feel like you're stepping into a dive bar! Everything is so well displayed and organized that you'd have to be functionally retarded to not be able to find what you want.
To top it all off, Anna and Steve are two of the nicest and most helpful comic shop staffers i've ever met, and they're always willing to help you order something or re-order or help you find whatever it is you're looking for. The dog thats there is adorable too, and really adds a nice homey atmosphere to the whole place. All in all, I'm very very satisfied with this new shop, and plan to keep going until i'm dead or broke and homeless. But even then I might collect cans to get my latest issue of The Walking Dead, and it'd be from this store! -

place is becoming the guilty affair from my current saver spot in sf (sorry guys!!) i feel so bad going into the shop and saying, with little to no eye-contact, i got these ones already...ahh shucks.
now why have i had a wandering eye and been picking up the goods elsewhere?? just look below and notice nearly all 5 stars around here at illusive! impressive indeed.
shop has a fantastic setup with your currents on the left, new releases and trades in the back and backstock to the right. probably the most choice spot in the bay to pick up variants for a very reasonable price. its like steve says- it all about volume, volume, volume!!!!
like mikey said on anna- she is a fucking awesome owner!!! i was being nosy one day overhearing her talk about one kid that shopped there trying to ask her out but being the dood looked too emo, she said some shit like-- sorry i dont date vampires!
i couldn't help but bust out laughing.
in the same mall area as corner place, 99 chicken and sui tofu!!!! tell me how that isn't fucking genius.Listed in: Comics & Dakine

Great store, I usually come here when my regular comic book store runs out of the issue I want. The people who work here are pretty cool and will help you out with what you are looking for. The workers also seem pretty happy to work there unlike other stores where they would have some guy behind a register and bum out the whole day and not interact with you until you make your purchase. Illusive also has a huge selection all displayed out and a good amount of back issues at the side of the store.

Still great...sadly since my last review I have since stopped buying comics. This place is under new management now, but the lady who owns it is very nice, and she has a dog that is there most days...adds a little something new to the store. Also new since my last review is the fact they took over the building next door and have expanded. The place is MUCH bigger now. The service is still excellent, and the best part, Steve is still there to help you with your purchases and provide witty conversation. Thanks for being awesome!

Review from Josh W.
San Jose, CA
Quite possibly the best comic and tabletop game store in the entirety of San Jose, if not the Bay Area. My experience with this shop and the owner, Anna, left me profoundly happy. They have an immense stock of back-issue comics from...well, everything, as far as I can tell, they carry the latest series and trades, have a huge collection of D&D, Magic, and other tabletop merchandise, and host weekly and monthly social events like Game Nights and Blood Drives. I doubt I'll go to any other comic stores in San Jose now that I'm familiar with Illusive. The staff is knowledgeable and really know their trade, especially Anna and Steven. You owe it to yourself to visit this shop.

Review from john c.

If Illusive Comics was a person it would be a Pirate, because Pirates are roughly 12 times cooler than Ninjas.
Their stock is impressive and their staff is friendly, attentive, and, more importantly, fun.
If you don't buy your comics here, your not just a square, your a rectangle!!
Deal with THAT!
