I don't mind spending a little cash-money on a delightful meal, however, I felt like Il Piatto let me down both atmospherically and flavorly speaking.
I'm taller than your average bear, as were several of my dining companions, one of whom could pass for an nfl linebacker. Despite the restaurant being only half full, we we're seated at a table that would have comfortably seated only half our number. This was followed up with mediocre service and food that was alright, but failed to blow my mind.
It is a beautiful place with a healthy wine list, but there are so many other places about town I'd rather be.

Went to Il Piatto last night for V-day and my high expectations were pretty disappointed.
The place was way too crowded. The wait staff was stressed out. The kitchen was stressed out. They were way behind. The food was decent, and I only say that because I tried my date's salmon. The lamb, served in multiple cuts, was very chewy, one cut was so bad I couldn't penetrate it and despite my best efforts it went to waste. The consomme had the flavor of a weak broth. The mushroom ragout was the highlight of my meal.
I'm feeling generous and rounded up to 3 stars because of a good meal I had there long ago, but last night's experience was not worthy.

yeah . . . so I had heard the greatest things about Il Piatto from friends, so I went there for my birthday - not so great. There were very few vegi options (surprisingly few for an Italian restaurant) and the one I got was so spicy I couldn't even eat it! They should have a warning on the menu.
However, I will say that my family loved their choices, so hopefully it was just a bad night in the spice cabinet.

I drive by Il Piatto at least 3 times a week on the way to Crema, and never noticed it until I was looking online for a cute Italian place to go with my mom. I'm so glad I tried it. Service and everything was a little slow, but it didn't matter because the place is so cute and perfect, so who cares? The appetizers were great too, so we weren't tooo hungry waiting.

I do declare that Il Piatto stands among my favorite Italian restaurants.
Housed in a cozy, dimly-lit and (dare I say) romantic locale on quiet Ankeny street just south of Burnside, Il Piatto could be easily missed. Seek it out and you'll find a seasonal and absolutely delicious menu. While the vegetarian selection here is slim, it is always amazing, so order whatever there is and don't be afraid to ask for substitutions--the staff here is always friendly and helpful.
Pricey and worth it.

Consistently great food, an amazing wine selection, and a friendly family owned feel is just the start. The art on the walls is eclectic and often done in house. The service is great, as long as you understand this is not Chili's, and "ASAP" should not be uttered. Eugen, the chef, has been around the world, and certainly brought some great taste with him when he came to Portland.
Overall, if you can handle the price tag, it is well worth said tag.

Based upon the very positive reviews here on Yelp - my girlfriend and I choose Il Piatto for dinner during our brief visit to Portland. We thought Il Piatto would make for the perfect nice romantic night out. As it turns out, we were disappointed. Despite making a rather early reservation for a Saturday night (6pm) and finding the restaurant mostly empty upon arrival - instead of getting a nice, comfortable table (of which there were many) - we were squeezed into a tiny table inches behind the host/hostess stand. Our waiter was distracted, rarely visiting the table (despite the low volume of customers during our hour there) and he never bothered to read us any specials. The food was good, though I found the portion sizes very small for what one usually gets at a nice italian restaurant. Finally, we decided to get some dessert; about 1/4 into a shared slice of cake, we discovered that the "tough layer" we could not identify was in fact PAPER. Note: This was NOT on the bottom of the cake, it was in the middle, between two layers. We alerted the waiter, who apologized, but despite all the paper we had ingested, he did not offer to remove it from the check.
We might come back to Portland, just so we can choose NOT to eat here again.

Yes the food is yummy. Yes the service is excellent.
Warning: do not go here on Valentine's day. Even with reservations I felt nothing more than a cow being herded through dinner.

walked in at 5:30 without a reservation and the hostess said it was all good to seat us.
i would've never guessed the restaurant would be so small and cozy in the inside, i'm not sure why. it was quite romantic, for two fatties who weren't looking for a romantic place to eat.
ordered the fresh mozzarella roasted pepper salad thing, and it was GOOD! also had really good bread; crusty on the outside softy and chewy on the inside with a side of marinara.
our entrees took awhile, we got tired to staring at each other, but once the food came out things were ok again. my salmon special was really GOOD. each bite needs a little bit of everything on your plate in order to appreciate the flavors.
service was great too.
