Excellent Place! I am really enjoying stopping there on our way up to Gold Country! Good selection of microbrews to bring camping with us and fabulous place to get a variety of burgers for lunch/dinner on your drive. It is extremely well located off the 80 and is a since to get on/off the freeway during your journey.

ATTENTION VEGETARIANS ~ This a fabulous place to get more then just a garden burger! They have a tofu burger and a mushroom burger too! Plus delicious add on toppings like mushrooms and grilled onions or avocado!

Haven't yet tried the pies, but really want to. They have mini pies too! All the prepacked (but homemade looking) foods remind me a lot of Henry's or Sprout markets in Socal.

They have great breads and smears in the grocery for a quick easy weekend breakfasts!

Stocking up for a weekend on the Lake is no fun when the options are Save Mart and Raley's. But zip off the road in Auburn and you'll find a sweet little slice of indie goodness! Ikeda's a country grocery, so don't expect style or pizazz, but the essentials are in order, and they've got pies a-plenty! That's right, pies. Of every imaginable flavor. So stuff-your-face worthy, eating a whole one alone is on my checklist of things to do. (As well as a red head.)

They also stock shining bins of local produce, enough bulk dried stuff to live through the apocalypse, and even offer a smorgasbord of their own spreads, dressings and dips with a tasting bar. They could use some help in the cooler (natural teas, kombuchas?) and the organic produce section. Aside from that, there's everything else you'll need to grub on for a weekend in the 'Hoe.

There's also an adjacent eatery that serves up decent fast food when the belly's grumbling.

A five star hamburger stand!

Ate there for the third time, today.  Ordered a triple patty hamburger, no cheese.  I asked if they could cook the meat medium.  He said they would try.  I know it's hard to do when they are busy.  But they did it.   OMG it ranks right up there as one of the best hamburgers that I have ever eaten...and that's saying a lot!   Nothing fancy..nothing exotic about it.. just a great fresh bun, fresh ground meat cooked with 12 secret spices..mmmm, plus the normal trimmings adds up to one fantastic, juice dripping hamburger.  Had a side of onion rings...very crunchy and tasty.
All food was served hot.

Now let's talk dessert.  Mouth-watering, homemade pies!  I bet, when you are ordering your burger and ogling the slices of pie by the register, that you cannot leave without trying a slice.  I have done that twice before...today it got the best of me.  Next to the restaurant, they have a 'Trader Joe's' type general store...selling whole pies among other specialty type items.  I brought home a whole pie!... on the motorcycle! (don't ask).  Homemade blueberry cobbler pie!  I will be having my first slice in a few minutes, as a reward for completing this review!
They have a large variety of fresh pies...I am sure that some are seasonal since they are made from fruit from their orchard.

This review would not be complete if I did not mention how great and helpful the employees are.  They are very friendly and will do whatever it takes to make you happy.

If you do not live in the area and want to take a Sunday afternoon drive.. it certainly is worth it.

They have been doing it right for 39 years!!

Try it, you will not be disappointed.

A fivestar hamburger joint with a expensive price tag attach to it.

two hamburgers (one basic/no cheese and one with cheese) and
one (ungenerous slice) of apple pie for $14.99 dollars. No fries, no drinks!....just two burgers and a piece of pie.

The whole time I was sitting there thinking we should of just gone
to IN/Out burger. Yes, their burgers are good, but In/Out is just as good at half the price.

However, I agree with the rest of the reviews the pie is the best apple pie I have had in long time. I savored every bite.

I browsed their products (dried fruit/nuts) package up.  $6.97 for two handfuls of dried nuts/fruit ...
I can go to Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Milk Pail in Mountain View and get the same amount for 1/3 of the cost.

The place is a ripoff, but I would gladly stop by for a piece of pie on my way to Tahoe.

Whenever we come back from Reno or Truckee we usually stop at Ikedas for pies, goodies and a bite to eat. It was after a basketball tournament so the place was packed and the burger line was out the door. Now I really can't complain about the food but the low rating is mainly due to two things: the fact that half of our party went to Machado's across the way and got pies for cheaper and snacks for cheaper and this incident w/ the Chicken Pot Pies.

First of all the Chicken pot pie is pretty good. I shared it w/ my sister and we killed it. My cousin who went to Machado's decided to get one. She ordered it and waited for her number to be called. She waited and waited and then finally 20 minutes later her number is called.

Lady at the Counter, " Oh, I'm sorry but we ran out of chicken pot pies"
Cousin, "So, it took you 20 minutes to tell me you ran out of pot pies?"
Lady at the counter, " Oh... No... it was the curly fries... Do you want anything else?"
Cousin," No.... "
Pause
Cousin," Can I get my money back?"
Lady at the Counter," Oh yeah.. hold on let me ask my manager"

SERIOUSLY? Are you an idiot or what? If you knew you were out of pot pies why wouldn't you let us know as soon as you figured that out. What if my cousin was hungry and wanted to order something else? She would have to wait another 20 minutes.. sorry I have a problem w/ stupid people and there obviously ones that work here.

It depends what you get here, but I think 3 stars is fair.

Ikeda's is a little shop/fast food-like restaurant where you can buy all sorts of food like fruits, chips, dips, granola, gummies, and lots of other snacks in the shop and order a burger (or sandwich or rice bowl) at the fast food-like restaurant. You can try all the dips too, which is fun! I like the fresh pesto and the garlic dip.

First, the pies are amazing. For $2.99 a slice, it's a fair deal (and if you get the whole pie, it's even cheaper!). The best is the razzleberry (or whatever it's called). The apple pie is also good, and it's better than the French Apple Pie, which is too sweet because it has the crumble on top.

I usually get the garden burger here, and it's.. meh. I think the burgers here are pretty good, but I'm never in the mood for them. Something about the drive, i think. I always thought it was a little expensive for what it is. You'll spend about $11 for a burger and a drink, and I think at In n Out you can get it for like $5. That said, I keep coming here on the way to or back from Tahoe.

The onion rings and fries are done pretty well. Nothing to write home about, but good.

The last time I was here, the service sucked. Actually, it was just this one guy, Matt, who has pushed me to write this. My boyfriend and I were ordering and wanted to know how big the teriyaki chicken bowl was. He looks offended that we ask, goes, "I don't know, like..." and loosely holds up this very ambiguous shape with his limp hands. We ordered it, thinking, what the hell, it can't be terrible, and when it came out, we see that these rice bowls come in the same clear plastic containers as the pies..  Why couldn't this Matt dude just tell us that? The pies were right next to the cashier when we were ordering-- would it have been so hard to use your brain to point to it? Or do you not know what the food at the restaurant you work at looks like??

There happened to be a little bug in our rice, which really isn't their fault (but just make sure you look!) and the girl cashier, Alex was very friendly and apologetic. She also got mad at the guys who put new customers' orders before our remake, which we appreciated.

Stop here when you're traveling on I-80. You won't be blown away by the food, but there's a greater selection than any fast food joint you can stop by. And the market is great for stocking up on relatively healthy snacks (veggie chips! mmmm!)

This place is a must stop for anyone heading up to tahoe. Yes, the burgers and fries are good. But the things that keep me coming back are the pies and cobblers a la mode and their milkshakes. Marionberry and Banana are my favorite milkshakes and their Banana Cream Pie is the greatest thing I have ever eaten. They tend to sell out quick so get on it!

It's definitely the pies that make it amazing! It's the pies, the family grocery store, the specialty Asian goods in a lack-of place...the quick food, the trail mixes, the pies, the pies, oh, and did i mention the pies? that really make it my hotspot before, or after Lake Tahoe!

Best pies you've ever had, amazing teryaki chicken sandwich, fabulous fresh produce. Not to mention the fresh sauces and salsas (many fresh house made) gourmet and asian items, candies, beverages, seasonal smoothies...

I worked at Ikeda in high school (about ten years ago) and its a very, friendly, honest family business. They treat and pay their employees well, which translates to happy, helpful service.

This place is fantastic.  The burgers served are great, the market is great, and the prices are fair.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE how they have little samples of the different dips/spreads you can purchase from them.  If only ever market were this way.

Oh, and their pies are delicious as well =).

Have to agree with Matt C. [ http://www.yelp.com/us... ] on this one. However, what is with the comment about undocumented workers?
Ikeda's is by no means unique in this respect, particularly in Placer County!

Still, credit where it is due: If money is no object, the salsas and other assorted fresh goods are top drawer.

I've been going to Ikeda's since the dawn of time.  It is pretty much to go to place for anyone making the drive up from the Bay Area to Lake Tahoe.   I normally get a cheese burger with a marion berry shake and split an order of fries.  I'm lactose intolerant and should probably NEVER drink a milk shake, but I can't say no to the marion berry.  I don't even know what a marion berry looks like.

Part of the Ikeda tradition is stocking up on bulk candy.  My family always gets gummi coke bottles and mini jawbreakers.  Sure, you can get either of these options at any candy store, but they seem to taste a million times better when they come from Ikeda's.  The country market also makes a delicious array of salsas and dips.

Its a must stop for any road trip.  I guess everyone who gave it crappy reviews hasn't been going here since the age of 4.  I'm sorry the magic is lost on you.

I know everyone raves about the burgers, shakes, and pies at Ikeda's - but I have a secret for you all.  The all time best thing to get at Ikeda's are the delicious muffins.  Honestly they are less like muffins and more like delicious individually sized cakes with an irresistible crumbly topping.  If you think that the tops of regular muffins are good, wait until you try these with their crumbly tops!

You can find the muffins by all the other baked goods.  I normally get the blueberry, but this last time I tried the strawberry muffins and they were also awesome.  These muffins are so great that I always make one of my best friends that lives in Reno stop on her way to visit me in SF to bring me my own package of muffins.  She is practically running a muffin cartel with all of my cakey requests.  Like everyone else has said Ikeda's is a great option for any type of travel down I-80.

... DUTCH APPLE PIE ~ the best... This review is not about their pies but rather the hot food....

I ordered a 'Tasty burger' with american cheese/curly fries/ and a drink...

When I got my burger and went to add a lil' mayo and ketchup... I noticed a fiber of some sort melted in the cheese...the fiber turned out to be an 8" strand of blonde hair!...

I went to fill up my coke and saw a blonde haired female workin' near the grill.  Anyways... no one is perfect..and no business can run without flaws...but we as business operators can do our due diligence to make sure this doesn't happen....

In such a busy environment... the food handlers at Ikeda's should wear a hair-net... without question...

Needless to say, my burger was good after I removed the hair... it had a slight flavor of hmmm .... 'Herbal Essence' ...

I've experienced better burgers...but their pies are in a league of their own...

Ordered the Patty Melt on my second visit here.  Yowza!  I wish I hadn't dined alone because one bite in, I wanted to tell SOMEONE how fantastic this sandwich was, but couldn't bring myself to chatting it up with a complete stranger.  Even I'm not that annoying.

Quite flavorful marbled rye surrounding not one, but TWO hamburger patties, mayo, relish (?), delicious grilled onions and cheesy goodness.

Damn you, Ikeda's.  You got me again...

Hmm.  After reading some of the locals' reviews it looks as though I'm just another stupid San Francisco tourist who's fallen for Ikeda's gimmick of bad food at high prices.  NOT!

Ikeda's is the bomb, people!  Haters just be hating!  They have a really impressive array of natural foods, nuts, candies, yummy snacks to nosh on for the rest of the drive up to Tahoe, and a wide selection of various types of dips.

I usually go to the retail store part of Ikeda's and not the burger joint, so I can't really comment in detail about the prepared food, but I do remember having a burger and fries here about 6 months ago and it made me want to start ordering red meat more often.  Great curly fries-perfectly seasoned.

Ikeda's has been a favorite of mine since childhood , and always provided a nice sanctuary from my annoying cousins screaming in the car the entire ride up to Tahoe.  For that I'm eternally grateful.

Eeek! I can't believe I haven't written a review for this place yet!

My family's been stopping by for at least ten years now on our trips up and down to Tahoe. We were introduced to the pies from our neighbor who would drive there from San Jose to pick up some pies. My favorite is still the peach... and then the Dutch apple. The pie's are fantastic, nothing like Marie Callender's... or Safeway. They taste like an old granny's back there churning out pies the old fashioned way.

The burgers are probably some of the juiciest, greasiest burgers I've ever had but they're good... especially after driving 4 hours and dealing with snow chains in the rain and snow. Highly recommend the shakes... they were thick enough to eat with a fork. (yes... we were too lazy to go to the condiment tray to get spoons....)

The market itself is full of baked goodies. Highly recommend their muffins  and coffee cake. Uber yummy!

I'm torn about this place. It really does put out some fine food and I think they have the best burgers for miles around. But their prices went up about 2 years ago, and I don't mean a little bit either, so I've gone from going there about 5-8 times a year to once or twice a year since it seems to cost me about $13 - $15  for me to get out of there per person. Add a family of 4 and you're talking some major bucks and quite frankly, it ain't worth it.

If you love onion rings, then you simply must come here. I am an onion ring freak and this place has hands-down the best that I've come across. Maybe it is the fresh onions or the fryer oil, it seems lighter than most. To top it off, an order will only set you back $3, or was it $4?

The burgers are good too. I've had their standard burger, a tofu burger and turkey burger. All good. The sauce seems to be the one ingredient that adds that special something. Kind of like a thousand island dressing - hey, maybe that is what it is! - I find that it makes everything taste better.

As for the store part, it is a little out of my price range. Sure their fruit pies look amazing, but being a bit of a baker myself, I can't justify spending that much on a pie. I would much rather make it. The pre-packaged bulk food items are good snacking fodder, great for road trips. Some of the produce seems to be good value, but since I shop for my fruit and veg at the farmer's market, I don't buy it here unless it is a REALLY good deal.

I can tell this spot is the mecca of rest stops for lots of folks, especially the  Bay Area crowd. I am subtracting one star because of the bathrooms. Slightly cleaner than your typical rest stop, I would have expected something more updated and closer to the rest of the shop/restaurant.

My pet peeve is how people mispronounce the name. I guess being of Japanese descent I have to put up with a lot...Why do people insist on calling it like IKEA? In fact, some one at the office talked about having lunch there and another person chimed in, "I thought they only served meatballs!". It is pronounced "ee-keh-dah". 'Kay folks?

I'm a local Placer County resident and I can't recommend Ikeda's:  they hire undocumented workers and the place is always filthy.........
Jackie T is right ----they are way over-priced and you can get better hamburgers at In N' Out Burger just down the road.

Ikeda's isn't really patronized much by local Auburn residents....its the favorite of Bay Area tourists who are used to paying high prices for everything, and don't know any better.

I will confess to occasionally buying the Specials at the Produce Market (five for $1 corn or .99 cent per pound mandarins).  Otherwise, I will go to Trader Joes for all the other things they sell at Ikeda's Country Market.

I am a local who has been clogging my arteries with these burgers since I was nine years old.  When I was 16 I actually got a job working at Ikeda's.  I would have given them 2 stars except for the fact that when a friend of mine and I were working there late one night we got into a ketchup and whip cream fight with our hot 19 year old female managers which was left for the morning crew and we didn't get fired.  Hands down, great burgers. period.  However, lately I've been fooling around with a spice mix that is similar to theirs.. and I can make burgers at home that are much more "tasty."  With their way high prices and lack of anything original 'tasting' on the menu other than their burgers, it makes me wonder why anyone hasn't tried to compete with them.. Their overflow could finance a small army.  They pander to the bay area peeps by raising their prices.. so, too bad locals.  BUT. . . If you want an original burger experience at Ikead's. . . try the GFR (with grilled onions).
As for their store, something must be said for the tight ship they run.. it goes a long way.  They have more things for sale per yard than anyone in in retail and their store is cleaner than any market I've ever been to.  Kudos.

Hey Kids! Do you like heart attacks?!? Well then you should come on down to Ikedas! Our delicious hamburgers and sandwiches are guaranteed to make that ticker stop!

DAMN Ikeda's is good but it is fried to all hell. They season their meat up and pack on cheese and onion rings. My heart seriously hurt after eating my patty melt. I didn't even know you could fit that many onions on a patty melt. I seriously thought i had an entire red onion in my sandwich. The onion rings were really good and really hot. I'm a big pie guy too and their pies are something to write about for sure. I'm glad they sell them by the slice too.....now that I think about it, I had a patty melt, onion rings and a slice of pie for one meal. No wonder my heart hurt.

The grill is good and has a lot of stuff but it is really expensive. I think it is something like $11 for a burger, fries and a drink. I mean, this place certainly isn't McDonald's: you're going to be full after eating everything but it is still a little steep.

The general store looked like it had some great things. Most stuff is local (the store makes a bunch of dips and dressings) and their beer selection was top shelf. I would certainly like the market to be close to my house. The grill though, I seriously think i would be in the grave if it were any closer to me.

This is a great stop on the 80 when heading up to Tahoe or over to Reno. It's definitely worth looking. Pregnant ladies or people with heart conditions beware!

I always stop here on my way to Tahoe. I've been coming here since I was a little kid and I never get tired of it. I always make sure to order a bacon burger, get the combo. There is a special way the season the meat that makes it special to Ikeda. The place is always packed when you are driving up on a Friday but well worth the wait.

While you are waiting or after you are done with your burger make sure to go get a few things in the market. Everyone knows them for their pies, which really are that great but I also am a fan of their blueberry muffins. They are just way better than the pies to me and that is saying a lot. I also like their trail mix and their other nuts and dried fruits. The only reason they do not get 5 stars is because of the price. The burgers and the market place are pretty pricey. Around ~$10.50 for bacon combo and the pies ~$16. Guess that what you have to pay for goodness.

There are about 20 small buckets of hummus, dip, schmear etc. laying out in the refridgerated section with a bucket of chips to dip with. When I first saw this, the first thing that came to mind was "ewwwww..." and as I was formulating those thoughts of disgust, my friend came over, stood beside me, grabbed a chip, dipped it into a random bucket, shoved it in his mouth, started nodding his head and said "mmm...pretty good." I had this minor look of digust on my face but proceeded to do the same. I figured if he croaks and dies, he won't be alone.

I ended up buy two dips/schmears: ITALIAN SCHMEAR (sun-dried tomatoes and something else) and a GARLIC ARTICHOKE DIP. I have yet to open my garlic dip but from taste testing in the market, it was pretty good.

I think the next time I need a pit-stop either before or after boarding in Tahoe, I'm going to stop by Ikeda's and buy a whole pie, and attempt to eat it all myself.

True fatty at work. See you soon, Ikedas.

Got a recommendation from my bro's co-worker to check this place out on our way home from a day of snowboarding.  MISTAKE, should have gone with old faithful Redrum or In n Out.

The burger just wasn't right.  The meat was way too peppered, with possibly a couple other spices mixed in there (cumin...even cinnamon?).  And whatever that special sauce they used did not add anything positive.

I had chili fries too, which weren't any better than what I could have made at home.  And the milkshake was less than impressive.

Needless to say I won't be back.

HOWEVER...I did take a look at the grocery portion of the store, and thought they had a great selection of organic brands and other goods.

After a day of boarding down the mountain, you can imagine how easy it is to work up an appetite. My sisters and I were craving something sweet, so I suggested pie. One problem...we don't know what's up in those parts as far as food goes, let alone desserts.  Off the freeway we see a huge sign "PIES". You're kidding me right? *ding ding ding*

What we found was a market/fast foodish place. I was expecting to see some pies on the menu board, but there were none. Instead, they had slices of pie on the counter in little plastic containers. I went with the marion berry cobbler and my sisters got dutch apple. They were both really good. The cobbler had that crumbly topping which was just the perfect amount of sweetness and crunch then the fresh berries, oh man, all around winner.

The market was really cool as well. Local products as well as some more known brands. They have a ton of different spreads, jellies, jam's, marinades, dips, dried fruits, candy, bread...you name it they probably have it. It's simply a gourmet food shop, without the 'ttude.

It may have been our timing, but I failed to see the huge spread of pies as seen in one of the pictures. Maybe that's like an early morning thing.  I will be back on the way up the hill and heck, maybe even back down to try the food, or simply for that cobbler.

Went there couple days ago and ordered couple burgers and fries. We ordered tasty burger, western bacon burger and fries with couple of drinks and it offers much more variety than In&Out but both of them are very good. Ikeda is good neighborhood joint but little bit pricey when compare to another In& Out and the place could be a bit more clean. I will come back if I am in town. AP

What's the big deal?
Their "special" market is kinda cool but nothing really to write home about. I did buy some pretty good beef jerky at a reasonable price. The food is pricey and I would much rather go across the highway to MARIA's TACOS ( you can see it out the window)

Ha, I love the local's comments!

"its the favorite of Bay Area tourists who are used to paying high prices for everything, and don't know any better"

"they are way overpriced and you can get better hamburgers at In N' Out Burger just down the road."

"No way, over priced and a grease pit."

Some of the best burgers in California, and a great selection of pie and cake.

Eaten here probably 3 times, always on the way back from NLT. Clearly the tourists that go here outnumber the Auburn locals - who let's face it are hicks anyway.

The burgers are awesome. $4.99 gets you a single, $5.99 a  double and $6.99 a triple. The meat is greasy as hell, but tastes good and comes with a wide selection of cheeses and other toppings. You have to pay a little extra for these, but I highly recommend the cheddar and bacon.

The $5 shakes are superb. I got the banana one yesterday, there is no bullshit syrup in that thing - ice-cream and bananas are all you get. Get a spoon as it redefines thickshake.

Finally, I haven't tried the pies, but the cakes are also great. Try the coffee cake, about 1.5 pounds of cake for $4.99.

I dream about their apple salsa.  I like it with chips.  I am dying for some, but I missed going when I went to Tahoe.  I might drive to Davis to get some.

Ikeda's is a must stop!  This trip we stopped 2x - going up to the snow and coming home.  My cousin commented that it's worse than Costco, you will end up purchasing so much more goodies than you expected!

I like to come here for their fresh pies and baked goods.  Dutch Apple is my favorite.  I tried the Banana Nut Bread for the first time...mmm mmm good!  Their burgers are good, as well as their pot pies - make sure to get a shake while you're at it!

I'm going to get a slice of the Banana Nut Bread that I brought home!  I want to go back to the snow, just to stop by Ikeda's and grab some treats.

Ikeda's is a nice place to stop on the way to Tahoe. The burgers are heavy on the mustard, which didn't help me because I was feeling some nausea from the car ride. I'll have to remember to tell them to go easy on the mustard next time. Love going into the store as well!

Hit up this place on the way to Tahoe - great fries, onion rings, burgers and produce!  Why I had never been here is beyond me.

I love Ikeda's produce and baked goods, but the grill is way overpriced for an average fast food burger & fries

Pros:
-Great fresh local grown fruits and produce in season
-Fresh baked apple pies and chocolate chip cookies
-Wonderful fruit ice treats in the summertime  (lemon, orange, strawberry, etc) similar to Gunthers or Merlino Freeze
-Location location location:  easy off/on to I-80 for either direction
-Lots of little specialty food & snack items for sale

Cons:
-Overpriced burgers and grill items.  Don't get me wrong, it's fine average 'fast-food' quality fare, but way over priced.
-Stiff mark-up on some of the specialty food & snack items sold in the store, however if you're craving something and they have it...you're gonna buy it...so enjoy it!

Loved my cheese steak with fries and drink.  Hunie Bunie and I shared, so it didn't leave too big a strain on the pockets.

Parking is a chore, specially when you're negotiating around the seniors, but every good thing comes with a little work!

My Dad stopped by here from Tahoe and bought an Apple Pie and reminded me about this place. Like others said this is a must stop on the way or back from Tahoe. The burgers here are huge and the fries and onion rings are good too. But I think the best thing is the Apple Pie. The best Apple Pie I've ever had. Better than Marie Callenders or Bakers Square.
