    This place is GORGEOUS.

As someone who follows fashion and works in and around it, I have to say that I was blown away by the selection of clothing that's available.  Margiela, Comme, Ann D., Rick Owens, Dries van Noten if I'm not mistaken I saw Wantanbe which very difficult to find as well. Oh god I was spinning!

It's very hard for me to find my size (46) cause it usually goes first so I was expecting just to look around and drool. But I found a really cool Ann D. shirt, and on sale!

A must go-to for shopping in SoHo. Very original and forward pieces there that are sure to get you compliments.

This place has already become an industry staple. Definitely check out the new/small designers and Ivan Grundahl because their designs come out less restrained and better priced. Fitting rooms are tiny and there's no mirror in them, but the salesgirls are extremely helpful and honest.

Very cool store, one of the last great independent boutiques in NYC.  They buy more avant-garde pieces, so it is not for everyone, but if its your style this store is the best.

I believe the salesperson (Phillip, I think?), white guy, 50's is very nice and helpful.  Definitely worth checking out if you are a fan of fashion, just to see some of the most talented labels designs on display.

The impeccable selection is this boutique's only special draw--the prices are sky-high for longer into the season than is justified, the helpfulness of the staff is really hit or miss, and the sales are rare (twice a year).  I often shop here for pieces that I know won't pop up elsewhere/on ebay/can be outsourced to a friend who lives in Japan and can find CDG for me for much cheaper.  I have purchased a lot of Ivan Grundahl here.

Customer Service: At the basement sale, the staff were decently helpful--specifically, a shorter woman with dark hair was the most helpful of all, working at the women's changing area.  Also, a tall white man (I've forgotten his name) who was also working the basement sale was helpful with directing customers about how to wear certain items.  Philip (the older collagen-lipped gentleman) was less helpful during the sale since he wasn't near the mirrors or by the changeroom, but he was certainly polite and courteous.  He made some helpful suggestions to me as I was giving a Grundahl coat a final look-over and was kind with compliments.  Outside of the sale, I've found him to be very helpful on an ordinary day at IF.

Everyone was nice and helpful except for the asian woman with the hideous blonde-streaked hair who was at the cash register... she was gross and gave off a bad judgmental vibe that several customers commented on in the change room downstairs. I actually hadn't seen her at the store before the sale.  I've never understood the logic of sales staff who make customers loyal to avant garde designers feel  put-off... there are other options that are being increasingly more popular, especially online stores... we don't need to shop at IF if the experience is dampened by poor customer service.

Overall, the store has terrific inventory, often available in small sizes (great for me!) and the customer service is generally decent but not a draw.  Philip is generally good at recognizing you as a repeat customer, but sometimes the other staff can be hit or miss.

If is still one of my favorite boutiques in NYC and is one of the only places I bother seeking out.

I don't like going shopping. I get overwhelmed. I rarely like anything. I frequently run away disgruntled before even trying anything on. I prefer to shop online thanks to ease of sorting and the possibility of "search and destroy" tactics. Normally the only way you get me into a store at all is that a friend is working or selling their designs there and I want to support them. Or I'm walking down the street to some important professional activity and a bird shits on me and I HAVE to find a new top RIGHT NOW. So when I find a place I like, I remain very loyal to it - If is one of the few shops in this city where I enjoy spending time.

The shop staff are friendly, and I like that the space is thought-out and organized but not excessively designed or controlled like some other boutiques in the area; If feels like a shop and not a museum. While I am not wild about every line they carry (some of it tends toward "drapey asexual art lady") they reliably stock a good selection of Margiela, CDG, Demeulemeester, and the occasional brilliant wild-card like Munoz Vrandecic or Undercover. I always find something amazing at If.

When I was a boy with a querulous mind and irresponsible fiscal habits (thanks Chase Manhattan credit!), I endured hours of transit time from upstate NY to spend weekends in the city.  Call it my Wonder Years, with a healthy dose of cashmere, cum stains (sometimes ON the cashmere), and alcohol-induced purging.   If boutique and Charivari were my favorite boutiques in the city.

It's true, you never forget your first time.  I bought my first Margiela piece at If Boutique.  One of the first places stateside to carry Comme and Yohji.  The collections here largely focus on deconstructed luxe; the pieces are sometimes outrageous, but always unimpeachable and well-made.  If has a deserved reputation for unearthing the next "avant-garde" designer.  Paul Harnden and personal fave Christian Peau's romantic and quasi-primitivist line are carried here.

Five stars for the collection and hazy trips down memory lane.

...god, saying "Charivari" makes me feel like a fucking dinosaur...

In my humble opinion this is one of the best Avant-Gard Fashion Boutiques in NYC and probably in the world, here fashion comes close to the art!
Even when I have no intention of buying , I just go there for an inspiration.
I cannot imagine how boring NYC must have been without the IF!
    Thank you IF!

Snooty, snotty couldn't care less salesgirls - wake up call -
the owner obviously doesn't resonate with the fact that
money is the great equalizer and the condescending
attitude of her staff stops me for one from spending
any money in this store.  The name of this store If, should
be replaced with You Are Not Welcome!

Danish Couture?  No way!  If kind of caught me off guard.  The most surprising part is Philip, a fabulous 70-something man with baggy, stylish pants and collagen lips.  Wow.  The selection is nothing short of different.  Not for me maybe, but definitely great on someone else!  Just go to Philip, tell him what you want, and he'll take care of you.  Measure you, choose for you, fit you.  I had the lovely fortune of going during their floor sample sale.  Items like bags, belts, and wallets are great unique additions to anyone's collection, and not as er...unconventional as most of their clothes.

These guys are probably the best buyers of Martin Margiela.  Great selection of accessories and the sales!  Check out the sales twice yearly.    Get on the mailing list.

Not bad.  It's been around forever; but, what they offer is really not unique or worthwhile.  Most of it can be had in many other stores.  The staff is rather boring as well, so I don't get the fuss of shopping here.  They do have their basement sale which can make it worth a visit; but, nothing here worth paying full price for.

Men's clothing currently includes Dries Van Noten, Paul Harnden, Margiela, Yohji Yamamoto, Ann D., and Commes Des Garcons. Be sure to check out their basement sample sale, which occurs twice a year (in February and August). There, you will likely be assisted by a Steven Tyler-lipped gentleman who resembles a Nordic architect and women with saggy bosoms and exposed Margiela tags.
