Heather, the girl who was working found a great rat pack era suit for my boyfriend, matched up a tie and gave us advice on what kind of fedora we should choose at the hat store (they didn't have any hats that worked for him there). The suit was a bit more than we wanted to spend (ok, a LOT more) but she pointed out the fit on him and why it was the right suit to get.
I'm not a big vintage clothing person, but the store had a lot of items and Heather was great, so I would recommend it to anyone.
Icon is my least favorite of the vintage shops in the neighborhood. Though they have a good bit of merchandise, and it is extremely organized, I've never actually found anything that I like- most of the dresses are actually pretty large, which I think is fairly strange for a vintage store. It makes me wonder if the peddlers of goods start at the north side of the street, and work their way down, leaving Icon to pick from the bottom of the barrel. They do offer a good selection of gloves & other accessories, which is definitely worth a look.
HOWEVER! If you're into Tiki/Hawaiian garb, this is your place. I can't stand the stuff, it nearly makes me gag... but if that's your bag, you shouldn't miss Icon.
Delicate little lace gloves perfect for a wedding, large sparkling sunburst earrings straight out of Betty Draper's closet, and glamorous fur coats that Rachel Zoe would "DIE" over keep me coming back again and again. The sizes of the most of the clothing are on the larger side but I am crossing my fingers that one day I will find something that I will take home with me.
If I don't give 5 stars Becky will beat my ass!
I have bought some timeless pieces there.
My flower ski shirt from the 70s.
and a Cravat that goes with my Faux Sharkskin suit.
The girls that work there are very nice and only threaten to kick me out when I start spouting at the voices or just talking to myself.
I've bought some of my lingerie there cuz none of my friends know about my kinky lingerie wearing fetish. (They have my Size)
Being a member of the male gender in this human race, it's very nearly pointless for me to go to a "vintage" shop. The vast majority cater exclusively to women. Usually, at a vintage shop, I wander around with friend and comment, "That's nice", or "Um, no, that doesn't work at all", or "You need to own that". In order to shop for myself, I have to buy new or go to a thrift shop.
No so at Icon-- they stock men's vintage as well! Suits, shirts, pants, hats, jackets, shoes: it's there.
The proprietor, Becky, is a complete doll and knows her stock inside-out. If she doesn't have what you're interested on display, ask, as it may be in the back room. Furthermore, she stocks clothing of all sizes, so don't think you need to be a size 2 in order to leave happy. Head to toe, accessories included, Icon can deck you out.
Today was my first day stopping into Icon and if I don't want it to be my last I better try and make it back in this week.... The owner of Icon is preggers and closing down her physical store and moving it to cyber space. I didn't have a lot of time to look around as my company was growing impatient..... Plus I figure if I head in later in the week there will be deeper bargains to be had as the owner stated she needed to downsize..... I'm semi crushing on a purple dress and think I might need to make it mine.....
I can't say enough good stuff about this place! They have the best selection of 1950's stuff I've seen in any brick and mortar store in years. Seriously, I thought all of the good vintage was going on-line, until Autumn at Dark Garden told me to go find my wedding dress at Icon.
One trip over the bridge, and I was able to do what I couldn't achieve in days combing countless vintage websites. And, the price was about half of what I was seeing for stuff on the interwebs. Woohoo!
Not to mention, they have a lovely selection of new hosiery and other accessories, courtesy of the pairing with Retro Diva. Big thanks to Melissa for all of her help! She even promised to track down a veil for me... Update to follow, hopefully with gorgeous wedding pics!
Compared to Twisters and Dolled-up Vintage, Icon Vintage is sort of the new kid on the block. All three are part of the East Bay Style Collective, which hosts fashions shows from time to time, but Icon is the place to go to if you need a vintage dress from the 40s-70s. Icon Vintage also is home to the Retro Diva (http://www.retrodiva.com), thanks to whom I found the perfect red petticoat for Cyndi Lauper outfit. I couldn't have lead a conga line without it!
There are cases full of sparkly things that are always calling me, and a complete selection of hosiery that I would buy more of if I could figure out ways to incorporate fishnets into my daily wardrobe.
Like Twisters, there's also a good amount of Men's items, so I don't feel guilty about having the BF in tow when I shop here. In fact, I bet he secretly likes going to Icon. Who wouldn't?
I was desperately searching for a 20s-style black dress this past halloween. I wanted one I could wear for the costume and continue to wear after, as I do love a great black dress. I thought I was going to have to buy something off ebay and cross my fingers. clickingthrough the Stop Staring website eventually brought me to a phone number that connected me to a lovely lady at Icon. I explained my predicament and she said she had the perfect dress and described it in detail over the phone. I rushed over after work and bought it. The lady that helped was wonderful. In addition to my black dress, I bought a hat and a sweater and a second dress. the selection was incredible!
I've been tryin to go back to the store every couple of weeks jsut to make sure I'm not missing anything. This store is lovely!
I love this shop. The owner knows what she is doing. She is so friendly and helpful. I always find something special at this store. xoxoxoxoxo
