When I first moved to Westchester, I convinced myself that I would come into the city a lot. And for a year or so, that was true. I sometimes took the train, but often drove. Back then, I had a good idea of where I could find free parking near my chosen destination.
My, how things change! On the weekends, I find myself staying closer to home and rarely drive into the city. Plus, with more wealthy people in New York (that is, people with cars) and changes to the parking rules, free parking opportunities seem few and far between. In the last few weeks, however, I've had the opportunity to drive into the city a couple of times. And as my daughter gets older, there will be more reasons to drive in for the cultural events offered in NYC, now that NYC has become "Toddler Town".
Icon Parking, or rather their website, is a HUGE boon to people like me. In the past, I would drive past parking garages trying to decode their pricing...with only a few nanoseconds to process, because of honking cabbies on my tail. You know the story...a big sign that says "Parking 6.50", but then you're in the garage and it turns out that covers only the first 9 and-a-half minutes or you have to be in by 7am on a weekday. By then, you're already pulled in and relatively thankful to found ANYPLACE to park.
The Icon Parking website allows you to enter your destination and search on parking areas near it. It also tells you exactly how much you'll pay for your allotted time. So, it's easy to balance convenience with price. I just printed out the list of lots and my worries over finding places or paying too much vanished. Both times I used the service so far, I was charged EXACTLY what the website said I would be charged.
Kudos to Icon Parking for creating a genuinely useful service.
Parking garage on 95th and 3rd
I am an on-call doctor who, unfortunately, needs to occasionally leave with little notice to head to the hospital. I have told the parking people this on days when I am on call. Last week I got called in for an 8 year old who was hit by a car. I called the parking attendant and he was so rude! He told me my car would not be ready for another 45 minutes. I walked down to the parking lot and took photographic evidence that there was no one in the parking garage at the time. He was literally on the other end of a glass partition doing nothing! I just stood there staring at him. FInally after 5 minutes, he huffed and puffed and brought the car. I could not believe it!
I just returned from work (2:30 am) and called the parking attendant right away to make sure that I gave them adequate time to get my car for 7:30 am. He just yelled at me. He told me that I cause him trouble and I need to called before 10pm to have my car ready for 7:30. I told him that he needed to read the sign--call 1 hour before if you are a monthly customer. He said this was the last time. You better believe it is the last time. I am letting everyone in the hospital and apartment complex know my thoughts about this parking garage.
Horrible!
I'm one of the few fools in this city who actually owns a vehicle. I've decided that until I can get rid of the thing in January, I've got to garage it. Sounds simple enough, right? Ha! Don't I wish.
I spent the better portion of a day making calls in an effort to secure a spot. I started by directly calling garages in my neighborhood (I found them through nycgarages.com), but not one of them had monthly spots available. Then I called the big guys; Champion, Central, etc... The people that I spoke with at those companies were not willing to do more than tell me the locations in my hood and give me the numbers. Thanks, but I could have done that myself.
Finally, I called Icon. Julio saved the day! He asked me a few questions about my car, and my location and he was on the case. Less than an hour later he called me back with two garages within a few blocks of my apartment at lower prices than I thought possible. He was even willing to negotiate with the garage owners on my behalf. Overall, a great experience! I found a garage that's close to my apartment and I pay $300/month (WITH out of state plates!)
Highly recommended for anyone looking for a garage.
