Thank you Yelp!!

As I have been eating leftover thanksgiving fixins since my Saturday dinner and need at least a 1 day breather prior to re-gorging myself tomorrow; I was craving steamed veggies.

I "yelp-ed" steamed veggies near my office address and PRONTO this place popped up.

$5 for a tofu bowl- no rice, extra steamed veggies? Yes PLEASE!

Now I don't feel so bad for the amount I will ingest tomorrow :)

Met up with a friend for lunch, this place was sort of in the right place at the right time.  I needed to get out of the office and my friend was hungry.

Neither of us had been here before and it looked like the servings were decent sized.  We ordered Chicken Teriyaki Rice bowls.  It's what you would typically expect...I mean for $7 you can't go wrong for what you get.

There's always a line at lunch which probably means repeat business.

Some people seem to forget they get what they pay for.  For $7 you can't expect a fancy lunch in SoMA, OR service, for that matter.  Besides, what's $7?  You can't even get a cocktail for that kind of $$.

I tried this place for the first time today after someone at the office recommended them.  Solid, predictable chicken teriyaki bowl, $6.90 tax included.  Truth be told, in a recession like this I don't mind helping a small business stay afloat.

Came here for lunch a few weeks ago and got the terikyaki chicken combo - pretty good for $7, no complaints.  Great price considering you usually pay the same amount for a small sandwich at a local coffee shop.

Nice, hot, fillimg meal for a bargan price.

Their chicken teriyaki is just finger-lickin' good. Eeveryone I've taken to this place has loved it. You can have a side of tempura veggies like beans, carrots, sweet potato or steamed veggies or salad with light dressing. They chop up the chicken in front of you and you can also tell them how much sause you want.

Dinately a preferred lunch spot.

I was raised in So Cal by people from Oklahoma and Ohio whose idea of comfort food usually involves some combination of bacon, bacon grease, potatoes, cheese, and probably some bacon grease and then maybe some more bacon and/or bacon grease. Can I get a hootie-hoo from anyone who has ever had a fried potato sandwich?

Well, this tiny spot fills the void for me as only true comfort food can. It's easy to miss on an alley between Market and Mission, but people in the know crowd this place at noon, so get their early or pop in at 1:00. "Chicken teriyaki, hold the salad. Please, if I wanted vegetables I'd go to Mixt Greens. Unless of course you mean those delicious fried bits wearing that delicious tempura jacket."

It's a small place, so plan to take it back to the office and remember, it's cash only.

Be sure to grab some of their Tempura dipping sauce...and a straw. I thought it was just Memmi, but I can't seem to find a sauce that tastes quite like it. I usually stick to the Chicken, but the unagi is delicious too.

Jeez Louise, what happened here? As Liza would belt, "One day it's kicks ...then it's kicks in the shins" ...well, actually it was Ebb and Kander who wrote that or I guess it was Ebb since he was the lyricist ...but who the hell cares, right? I just noticed that if you come here a bit earlier than the lunch hour, the chicken teriyaki is cold and rubbery and the thick sauce nearly indigestible.

The service is the same San Quentin cafeteria-style barking and shoving. It's kinda like the Soup Nazi on "Seinfeld" but without the laugh track. Frankly, I am bothered that the quality of what you get depends on how busy they are and how much of their meat and poultry they're turning over. Remind me not to come here when it's slow. Sheesh.

FOOD - 2 stars...the only saving grace this time was the lukewarm tempura
AMBIANCE - 2.5 stars...not a comfy-cozy place by any stretch
SERVICE - 2 stars...NEXT!...NEXT!!...NEXT!!!
TOTAL - 2 stars...when the line goes out onto Stevenson and snakes its way to First Street, then OK, I'll come back

It's 1:28 and I would kill for a post-Ichiban power nap.  That is to say, this is not light, healthy fare.  But you will enter this small-ish, unadorned joint hungry, and you will leave full and with only about six bucks less than you walked in with.

The selection is pretty limited but that's OK because near as I can tell, about 90% of people order the chicken teriyaki.  Here's a tip: want to squeeze a little bit of healthy out of this place?  Ask for the steamed vegetables instead of the salad.  They're not all that great, but somehow eating cold, unseasoned broccoli makes you feel better about that half pound of chicken in sweet brown sauce you just devoured.

Aside from the good, filling food and cheap prices I think the most notable thing about this place is the cleaver-wielding women who, frankly, scare me.  They can chop a chix with lightning speed and must have right forearms the size of gallon milk jugs.  Impressive.

So don't expect great things from Ichiban, but keep it on your Financial District lunch rotation for those days were you throw calorie counting to the wind and need some sweet, filling deliciousness.

I found myself wandering in SOMA a bit looking for food. I saw this place and was hit by a sudden urge to have Japanese. It's located on a side street and it looks surprisingly commercial inside.

I felt it wasn't great. There was plenty of teriyaki chicken, but it was absolutely soaked in sauce. I like it when Japanese restaurants give you a whole lot of rice so you have something plain to counteract the other tastes. I also got a couple pieces of tempura and some crisp leaves of lettuce.

I didn't care for it. It was crowded and people came in for the half hour I was there, but it's not great.

Ichiban is located in the alley directly behind my office building, and I have only been here twice. The first time, I was really excited to find Japanese so close to the office. The second time, about two years later, I gave it another try to see if it was as bad as the first.

The "service" is terrible. Mild anxiety from the staff barking at me for my order, trying to move the line as quickly as possible with no attention to customer service.

Food is very heavy, not like Japanese should be. The chicken teriyaki tastes decent, but the chicken is really fatty. Tempura is comprised of primarily potatoes and squash, basically the cheapest veggies they can fry up. My stomach felt uneasy all day.

Probably won't be back, despite its convenient location.

One day its good.

The next it's not.

It reminds me of a Seinfeld episode where he is dating a woman who's appearance seems to go from beautiful to hideous in the blink of an eye. That is how it goes at Ichiban Teriyaki. Even the vegetable tempura has its off days. The beef teriyaki can be extremely good some days and then the next week I go in and I get nothing but teriyaki sauce and grilled fat. Yuck.

Hole in the wall food, fast and heavy. I have eaten many times but must add salmon teriyaki was probably one I would come back and may try the pork chop.

Last time I had the tempura, so much batter and so many pieces AND the rice. grrrrrrr.... so much of food coma, not even a strong iced coffee can chase the starch away...

Pretty busy during lunch time, good thing the service is really fast and people come and go so you most likely can find a table.

I've know about this place for a few years now and it's one of my favorites.  Usually when I eat here I don't been to eat dinner because the portions are huge!  I only order the combo beef and chicken teriyaki with steamed veggies. I get the combo because both meats are sooo delicious you just can't have one!

I've only eaten in there once or twice and it's not the best sit down place but I've been in worse conditions.  So as long as my table is relatively clean, I have a chair, and the food is delicious then I am as happy as a clam.  I see a lot of complaints about the service but it doesn't bother me.  I'm just there to get my food and my grub on.  If I wanted nicer service I wouldn't go to a hole in the wall in an alley.  I mean come on that should tell you a thing or two.

I used to go to this place multiple times during the week but, the combo is a lot of meat and after awhile it shows.  So now I go once or every other week.  It's still delicious and even though the prices did go up I think I'm getting a good deal compared to most of the overpriced places around here.

This place is disgusting! I should've listened to the bad reviews that others wrote. The tempura is so thick and lukewarm. The lettuce that they call salad with no dressing. The beef teriyaki which is so dry and the taste of burnt grilled chicken teriyaki. Even drenched with teriyaki sauce it did not make the meat taste better.  Never again. I don't care how fast the food is made. Even jack in the boxes teriyaki bowl taste better!

This is another one of those places where I'd like to give 2.5 stars, but again I am going to stick to the 2.  This place comes and goes for me, and it usually has to do with what I order from there on a particular day.

Let's start with the teriyaki -the chicken is good, but the salmon is overcooked. Either way, they drench it in teriyaki sauce -not good, in my opinion. My rice ends up soaked. I like white steamed rice, not teriyaki soup.

The tempura is good, but man is it greasy! One time I ate just one piece and the thought of all that grease made my arteries scream for help.

Lastly, the udon.  The first time I tried it, I ordered chicken udon. That was also the last time I ordered that. They use the chicken they grill and place it on the udon. This made the broth so oily. Ick.  Since then I have just ordered the vegetable udon. Now there's one thing I come back for. The broth is good, the noodles are good, the veggies are just right.

The line moves pretty quickly in there, mostly because the ladies behind the counter are in a hurry. They are nice enough though.

I had tempura.  It came with rice.  While it did include 3 shrimp, the rest was all green beens and potatoes. The tempura was not light and crispy, rather the batter was heavy and greasy.  The rice was, well, white rice.  All that for $7.65.

The food here is edible, but I am not really sure why I would ever want to eat it again.

At least the tap water was good.

Get the teriyaki chicken. The beef is so so. Excellent tempura, especially the green beans! Quick service for take out, also room to dine in. Cash only, no cards (although there is an ATM inside). The serving size is very big, I'm hardly able to eat the combo that comes with steamed veggies, tempura, rice and the meat. Good price, $7 for a bowl, or around $9 for a combo plate.

Well this little hole-in-the-alley place was interesting.  Everyone in my office seems to eat at their desk for lunch all the time, but the one that sits next to me always came back with some really good smelling food.  I forced her to take me to the place that sold food with the good scent and 4 other employees followed.

We went to the little tiny hole of a restaurant  after almost getting hit by a truck in the alley, with a tiny bar to eat at and just a few tables.  Immediately as you walk in they say "Hello, hi, hello, hi," rush rush... "what do you want?  You ready yet?"  Hello ladies, I just stepped one foot in the door and my eyes aren't even close enough to read your menu.  I felt like I was in a Seinfeld episode.  Order quickly, move to side, pay with money already in hand.  No questions asked.  It was quite intimidating.

Another thing I noticed.  I'm Asian and I immediately got chopsticks handed to me.  My non-Asian coworkers were immediately handed forks.  Now, I am a very Americanized, I-don't-know-how-to-use-chopsticks Asian disgrace and my non-Asian coworker actually told me I was holding it wrong.  How sad is that?  By the way, the workers here are definitely not Japanese, especially after I heard them speaking something else.

I ordered chicken udon for about $6.50, a very reasonable price and it tasted just ok.  The chicken was off the grill and a little bit dry.  But when I came back the second time, I got the beef udon and it was so much better!  They give large chunks of veggie tempura with the dishes which makes you feel like they're giving you something extra or special.  It's just a lot of batter but I can't say no to tempura sauce.  But it's cheap and decent enough to eat.  I'm pretty sure that soup was full of MSG because I was sooo thirsty after my lunch.  Of course I'll come back because I can't find many other cheap places downtown.

FRESH, fast and simple...is the magnet attraction here.

My "go to" place for teriyaki chicken and rice. They skimp on the rice and overwhelm me with chicken. I ask for all lettuce instead of the tempura that comes with the plate you order.

I crave rice after I eat here, but I still go because it's about two meals worth of food for me and it's really close to work.

Don't order the sushi or the bento boxes. They don't look good and I wouldn't expect it to be good either.

Non-Japanese staff.

This is NOT A RESTAURANT! Just order, pick up food and put in face. No luxuries, so don't expect it either.

Cash ONLY.

Tucked away in a corner off of the street, Ichiban is a very cute find.

I ordered their chicken teriyaki, which comes drizzled in sweet teriyaki sauce,  on top of fresh rice, and is accompanied with a tiny salad and rather heavy vegetable tempura.

Ichiban isn't outstanding food, and I found the chicken to be a little tough, but they're fast, convenient, and reasonable priced.

Next time I'm craving Japanese food, I'll be sure to try their curry or udon.

The only dishes I order from here are the Udon and the Salmon teriyaki bento.   I've tried the others and I was less than impressed.

First off, come in with some low expectations.  Also, come in with CASH.  They don't take ATM or credit cards and will kick your ass if you make it all the way to the register and can't pay.

Why the need for low expectations?  Well, the options for decent and inexpensive japanese food in this part of town are slim to none.  They also don't serve sushi.  However, you DO get a huge portion of rice, steamed or tempura vegetables, and a decent portion of meat.  I like to get the salmon which is simply seasoned with salt and pepper with the teriyaki sauce on the side.  The tempura is not great, half of it seems to be cheap and bulky potato slices and sometimes their oil is dirty so you end up burping fried oil flavor for a few hours after you've eaten.  Not good.  But don't despair, if the tempura doesn't look fresh you can just get a double order of steamed vegetables (broccoli and carrots.)   Service is brusque to the point of rude.

If you come in knowing that this won't be the best teriyaki you've ever had but it is a decent value for your money, then you'll probably be satisfied.  Plus, service is usually very fast due to the limited menu selection which makes it easy and convenient take out.  Just remember to hit the ATM before you get there.  Don't say I didn't warn you!

Woohoo, another cheap asian food discovery in SOMA/Financial District!  I am always looking for more places to grab lunch at around work.

Thanks to Mama J. for bringing me to Ichiban.  The place is classic Japanese fast food.  California rolls, udon, or various kinds of teriyaki or katsu over rice.  You get what you pay for here.  Lunch here is super cheap and the food is plentiful.  I'm always walking away satisfied.

There are also lots of veggie options (including either the udon or the teriyaki fried tofu over rice with some vegetables).

If you want crazy ladies chopping chicken with a big butcher knife to the point where you think one of them will lose a finger,  and then yelling at the line to expedite your lunch order, this is the place to go.

A stones throw from my building, this place is an occasional stop for me to grab lunch.  Their portions are big for what you pay for.  I usually get their Udon, which is quite tasty, and today i got the chicken teriyaki.  Served with rice and veggies (i got steamed, its usually tempura) and a killer teriyaki sauce, I definitely wont be hungry for a while.

I wouldn't recommend eating in, only because the place is small and gets really loud during peak hours with the kitchen staff hollering.  But get it to go, and sit in the sun with a book or a friend in a nice public place, and it makes for a great lunch.

My co-workers and I joke about getting some really delicious pigeon bowls from here.  But we kid.  They're not reeaally pigeons.

Good chicken bowls, tofu bowls, salmon teriyaki.  Cheap for the most part, for what you're getting.  It's not the best chicken, but it's good.  The teriyaki sauce makes it great.

The background chefs are creepy.

For the price (roughly $5-9) This place ain't bad at all.

It's quick and tasty Japanese fast food and sometimes that's all you really need. (Beef bowls, chicken katsu, udon, tonkatsu, udon and the like.) They cater to the SOMA lunch crowd so I am not sure of their evening or weekend hours. There are a few tables in there but most folks just grab and go.

I ordered the beef bowl. Richie Rich had the combo plate and we both finished our meals. To be honest the beef bowl was good not great (but for $5 who can complain.) But here's where the fourth star comes in, it also came with a few pieces of veggie tempura, which considering it was made ahead of time, was pretty crispy and not too oily, and you could actually taste the zuchinni and sweet potato. That's impressive.

I once went to to Tempura House located near by on Second and this place beats them on price and flavor.

Oh and CASH ONLY!

Yea for beef bowls. Do a little dance for the beef bowl will ya?

I am ASTOUNDED at the high rating this place has gotten!!!

One star MAX.  Overpriced.  Greasy and undercooked tempura.  Tasteless teriyaki sauce.  Rubbery meat product.  Three pieces of iceberg and no dressing.  Are we getting a bit lax about what we rate as good food???

I threw 2/3 of this crap in the garbage.

Update 5/6/08:
After hearing a colleague suggest that I give them another chance, I ventured down to try the pork tonkatsu.  Okay, I'm bumping them from one star to three stars as it's pretty dang tasty.  The dressing-less salad and tempura still SUCK, but the tonkatsu is fab and you get loads of it.  Their tonkatsu sauce is yummy, too!!

Whenever people ask me about Ichiban I always say its that place in that alleyway. I go here for lunch once in a while, usually grab it to rather than dine in. The more I come here, the more I realize I probably go cause its close by rather than cause its that good. I'm not saying its terrible or anything, but it could be better. When I was skimming through a few of the reviews and I agree that the tempura can be too oily.  I think the tempura at Julie's Kitchen andTeriyaki Express at the One Market food court are lighter and tastier than this place from my experience. But if you're hungry and want some Japanese food this place can still service that need.
The line can get long at times, but don't worry they keep the line moving at this place, just like any of the Subways they have in the Financial District. They take your order, you move along and pay, they hand you your food, you walk out, and proceed to jaywalk across 1st street!
Just like any place theres folks that love the place and don't go to any other Japanese spots for lunch. I may not like the place as much as before, but its still in my rotation of Japanese spots for lunch.

Well first and formost, I must address the peeps who came in expecting this hole-in-the-wall to serve up authentic Japanese food.

Um, hello... what part of "Ichiban Teriyaki" did you not understand?

That being said, this place is definitely NOT authentic... and I don't think they claim or try to be.  It does very well fulfill its promise to have decent teriyaki (even for vegetarians!), be cheap, and be fast. So for that:

FOOD: Not brok da' mout' good, but certainly comforting, especially on a cold day.  Something about their tempura veggies, as greasy and gross as it looks, that is somehow still addictive and keeps me coming back for more.

AMBIENCE: Hidden.  Stuck in a little alley between Mission and Market on 1st Street where no one would ever THINK of going unless they were selling drugs or making deliveries.  Which is GOOD thing for me... my little secret.
As for service, it's from older Taiwanese women who yell at you if you don't holler your order fast enough.  But hey, they're trying to keep the line going fast right?  If you want sit-down service, go elsewhere. If you are craving yummy cheap teriyaki and tempura PRONTO!, holler that order!  And fast!

PRICE:  Hmm, I was stuffed on yummy teriyaki tofu and tempura veggies for under $6.  Wow, and this was in SF? Prices pretty much... can't be beat.

PARKING: It's in the middle of downtown.  Unless you want to pay $40 to park for 1/2 an hour, or waste $40 in gas looking for parking, I highly suggest you take the bus.  It's right by the Muni/BART station

I should have read the reviews before I tried this place, but it was a spur of the moment decision to get an early lunch when the skies threatened rain.

I ducked into Stevenson Alley and had the place almost to myself. Nothing fancy, just teriyaki bowls to go, cash only. I surveyed my choices and picked #3 since it had broccoli in the bowl. But you have to tell them you want steamed veggies, otherwise you'll get tempura. When I asked for steamed veggies, they just tossed some more in the box. I suspect if I was fifteen minutes later and holding up the line, there would have been a problem.

The chicken was OK, and the "salad" was some wet lettuce. Next time I'll just ask for double steamed broccoli and see how that goes.

This would be an excellent candidate for a 3.5 star review, but I'm feeling generous today.

This morning, I had a craving for a bento box; I have no idea why, but bento boxes remind me of Sunday afternoons when I was little.  So, all morning, I was craving Japanese food, and around lunch time, I smelled some delicious food...  Japanese food!

Richard T. popped out of the office for Japanese food, and when he brought his food back, we were salivating from the smell of it.  He sent us over to Ichiban Teriyaki...which isn't really a bento box but it was good enough for me!

The place is easy to miss, just around the corner in the alley on Stevenson, and it's definitely a hole-in-the-wall.  Ed U. is right - the woman behind the counter is a little scary in how she rushes you...which made for an intimidating order experience; don't step up unless you're ready to order!  I got the Ichiban Combo which had chicken teriyaki, beef teriyaki, and shrimp and vegetable tempura.  The tempura was the most excellent part - the beef tasted a little funny to me (maybe it's just because I don't eat a lot of beef teriyaki?), and the chicken teriyaki was a tad bit dry,  But generally, a LOT of food for just $7.

Next time I'm going to go for chicken teriyaki only...or maybe even the udon!  The place is fast (unless you are getting the unagi don, apparently) and not as sketchy as it looks from the outside.  :-)

When 1pm rolls around, the topic of conversation isn't where to go for lunch. Rather, chicken bowl or chicken udon at the usual? That's when my co-workers realize we're all lazy a**es and won't even walk more than a block to grab some grub. It's not the best, but it's reasonably priced, super fast and conveniently located in our backyard on Stevenson Street. We come here so much, we should all have a frequent buyer card!

Feeling like a healthier alternative? They'll gladly substitute steamed veggies for the usual accompanying tempura.

Hold your ears, follow the line and E-A-S-Y on the teriyaki sauce!

Truly one of the better lunchtime bargains in the downtown area!

Pop by Ichiban anywhere near lunch time, and chances are you'll see a line going out the door.  Don't let it scare you off....the ladies that run the kitchen have a lightening-quick assembly line that'll have you ordering, shelling out a paltry sum, and heading off to eat within minutes!

You give your order to the woman near the rice cooker when she makes eye contact with you.  90% of the downtown regulars order the Chicken Teriyaki plate, and do so by saying "Chicken to Go".  The dinner comes with a decent sized quantity of sliced chicken, white rice, and tempura.  Don't like your veggies deep fried? *neither do I*.  In that case, Change you order to "Chicken to go, steamed", and your veggies will be scooped out of a steamer by the rice instead of the chafing dish on the steam table.

One lady scoops the rice out of the rice steamer,  Another grabs your choice of vegetables.  Another grabs a chicken breast from a nearby steam tray, goes WHACK! WHACK! WHACK! to chop it up in strips, then finishes it off with a small ladle full of Teriaki sauce. Your order moves with an unbroken chain of little white styrofoam trays, all going from one set of hands to the next, moving down the counter like diminutive Ford Escorts on a Detroit assembly line. Next stop is the cashier, where the boss-lady rings you up. "Chicken-to-go-fiveninteyfive-thankyouuuu.....".   Bang. It's the  12 o'clock lunch rush, I've spent six bucks, spoken four words, and within three minutes I'm walking down First street with lunch in hand.

On site seating is available, and isn't that difficult due to vast majority of orders being take-out. If it's nice out, I recommend the public area across 1st street adjacent to where the old McDonald's was.  My only gripe is that they short you on Teriyaki sauce.  If you like to mix the sauce with your rice (like I do), you'll find they don't give you enough.  Still, this shortcoming is easily rectified by requesting extra sauce from the woman with the sauce ladle.

I've had Teryaki at every lunch joint within walking distance of 1st and Market...sit down, take out, and somewhat spendy.  I gotta say, IchiBan is not only the fastest and cheapest....it's the tastiest too.  If you're downtown and looking for a good lunch on the cheap, this spot is a no-brainer.  I say check it out!

Have you ever seen that VISA check card commercial where everyone is in the flow of checking out their items and there is always that one customer who pays by check and ruins the entire flow?

Well, when you are at Ichiban Teriyaki you need to know what you want to order right when you step in line.  Don't be surprised if the lady at the counter is yelling "NEXT" at you even though there are 4-5 people in line ahead of you.  You don't want to be that person messing up the flow of the lady chopping the chicken.

Also, they give 1 packet of soy sauce per customer.  It's okay to ask for another packet even if the lady gives you a dirty look.  It could be that she's just looking out for your sodium intake.  I'm sure it has nothing to do with them being frugal on their soy sauce supply.

Do NOT eat here!

Cheap.  Fast.

But the food is cold, and not flavorful and just not worth the red cents!

Cheap-bad!!!!

Dear Ichiban:

I like you.  Even when you yell at me: "Next!" and I don't immediately respond.  I know you care.  That's why you give me about 12 chicken's worth of chicken breasts in my chicken teriyaki.  And that's why you ladle on the sticky sweet teriyaki sauce (unlike so many of your competitors who get strangely stingy with their flavored sugar water).   And then you charge me less than $10 for a meal that feeds my entire family.  You're efficient, and you're beautiful, Ichiban.  I'll always love you....

Love,
Me

I have become addicted to the Chicken Bowls from this little hole in the wall restaurant.
1. Super fast service- the lady hollers at you, you give your order, pay, and it's ready.
2. Cheap- there are very few places in downtown that I can get my lunch for 5.50$
3. Yummy tempura- what a nice treat in a teriyaki bowl...although now that I have read there are steamed veggies, I may have to go healthy once in a while

The chicken is tender, not the aboslute best, but for a lunchtime deal you'd be hard pressed to beat it.

They're short with you, big deal.  I'm looking for some lunch, not a friend.

They are fast, yay!

I've been going to this place since January 2002.  When I worked in the hood I would eat here once a week.  I was so much the regular that 4 years later I walked into the place and the cash register lady said "Chicken Udon to go?  Nice to see you again".  That freakin' rocks!!!

Don't ask me how anything else is.   Whenever I'm in the neighborhood I grab a chicken udon to go.  Sometime I grab some extras for friends back at the office.   Best damn chicken udon anywhere.  I measure Japanese restaurants by their chicken udon like sushi restaurants are measured by tamago.  I'm not saying this is the best Japanese restaurant, but their chicken udon simply cannot be beat by anyone.

I don't know why anyone would sit and eat there when there are two lovely outdoor spaces within 50 yards of the door to this place.  Who cares about the ambiance?  This is fast, tasty, food!  (without 29 g of saturated fat)
